- crispyart, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47i'm kind of surprised it did this well actually.
- MrTsLoveChild, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28you felt sorry for *them*? the da vinci code was painful to sit through. at least you they got to hear "i'm the juggernaut, bitch!"
- evol1911, on 10/12/2007, -10/+34Yea... god forbid there is dialogue in a movie...
- AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20The mainstream press actually gave it pretty good reviews (Ebert gave it three stars). It was the fanboy press that was more vicious.
- darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+26Don't you know that it's a known fact that if you have 2 previous versions, it doesnt matter if you don't even have any XMEN in it 5 million people would've watched it...
Honestly, the quotes about the pacing are dead on...and this movie feels like a franchise milking more than an action movie. But at the very least, if you watch it, remember to stay past the credits for the 'secret scene'..its brief, but pretty important - a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Cause it has the Juggernaut, bitch!
- ErrandboyOfDoom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22"Get on with it and do what X-Men do best, kick ass."
You're the reason no one respects comics. - vexter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Xmen talking? WOW, I guess you never read the comics or the watched cartoons. The story has always had alot of emotion in it. It has never been "just about action". Action is what happens when you are oppressed. And oppression is what the XMEN are all about.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I agree - I winced when I read that the director of Rush Hour was helming this one (Rush Hour was NOT a good movie). Bryan Singer had a much better feel for pacing and drama in his first two movies - they didn't "feel" like comic book movies the way that #3 does.
There were a few good scenes that I quite enjoyed, but there's definately the feeling of trying to "cram people" onto the screen to try and give everyone a few moments of time, and it didn't work.
** SPOILER **
And I found that the who aspect of Magneto staging a frontal assault on alcatraz (what a wierd location for a final showdown) a bit lacking. Magneto has style and he has the brains to not try a frontal assault regardless of the amount of power they've gathered. I expected something a little more creative than a brawl.
Arguably my favorite scene was where Magneto "saves" Mystique from the truck, then abondons her there naked and alone when she loses her mutant powers. There was the perfect mix of action and drama. The actors played it beautifully.
This one would've been fine as a DVD rental - didn't need to see it in a theatre (infact, in our theatre, the focus was soft, the sound wasn't all that loud, and I counted 3 cell phones going off during the movie - oh yes, and the projectionist cut off the end credits before the teaser at the very end had finished). - icetigaurus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16The "I'm the Juggernaut Bitch" made the movie worth it for me...
When I heard that I laughed so hard b/c I had been saying that throughout the whole movie to my friends whenever the Juggernaut did something. And they actually put that line in there! It was a reference to a voiceover of some episode of the X-men tv cartoon done in a hilarious gangsta style.
link to the fan movie that this line came from (quite funny):
*WARNING NAUGHTY WORDS AHEAD*
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3937653242682015759&q=juggernaut - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I disagree, after seeing the Da Vinchi Code, X-men 3 was like the best movie ever!
- MarcTheLad, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I'm glad to hear that X-Men was quite the Juggernaut at the box office.
- roastedbagel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Just goes to show how much of the bad reviews a movie receives doesn't really have an effect for certain movies. I haven't seen it yet, however I kinda feel happy for the team of people who helped complete the movie, kind gives all the journalists/reviewers/critics a slap in the face, which is always nice...
- LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9*CONTAINS SPOILERS*
@sirsteveh: Love story going on in the background? In my opinion, the other two movies did a much better job of playing on the romance. The Scott-Jean-Logan thing was well paced and dramatic in the first two movies. The romantic plot elements in the third movie seemed to get one scene each, and then were ignored. They were like so much else in the film. The director/screenwriter (not sure whose to blame) knew they had to be there, but they weren't really in his vision, so after their token scene he just ignored them.
I mean, Scott was murdered by his resurrected lover, and the only one who ever notices or comments through the whole movie is Logan. Nobody else ever mentions Scott. Ok, now I didn't really like the guy, but still...
Bobby and Pyro get a brief dialogue about how Bobby doesn't like fights (was that supposed to be character development?) and a little fight scene at the end. I expected much more drama from that little conflict.
A whole slew of new mutants are introduced (The Beast, Angel, Kitty, Colossus, Calisto, Arclight, Juggernaut) and of the lot of them, only the Beast got what I'd call a real treatment. Angel in particular annoyed me; it looked like they'd started to give him a backstory, then it got all too hard and they just made him fly around symbolically. I' might add Phoenix to that list as well - she spend most of the movie (and especially the last fight) just standing around looking evil.
That's not to mention a number of continuity issues (Nightcrawler, where are you?) and the sunny day -> instant night faux pas in the final battle scene.
I've never read the comic books, or watched any X-Men cartoons, but I really enjoyed the first two movies. The third was a bit of a let down. - antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It was alright. It doesn't really deserve this much money, but I think the previous two do (and that's probably why it got as much as it did).
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9People are just eager to see the Snakes on a Plane trailer.
- schwegler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9They need Joss to write/direct the next movie... That would be awesome. He does great dialogue, and I think his current Astonishing X-Men would translate well into a movie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"So, if they decide to make a fourth movie, with the cure wearing off, Professor X not dead, and Cyclops possibly not dead, the only character that REALLY can't be in the next one is Jean Grey."
Why can't Jean Grey come back? She's been killed countless times in the comic. The Phoenix force brings her back. That's why they call it the Phoenix... - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I believe they're calling this the "last" one because Fox's rights to the X-Men movie license expires after three movies. Marvel and Fox can negotiate to extend the franchise at Fox, or Marvel can now take it to another studio.
- ppinette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just because he doesn't have his mutant powers doesn't mean he can't use his big muscles to break the neck of a small child. Hell, I do it all the time and I don't even have big muscles.
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9DAMN YOU BRYAN SINGER!!!
- julesp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You payed to see the whole movie, dont be a coward next time and speak for yourself.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They won't pay the price for using Ratner until the *next* movie comes out. X3 did well because the first two were awesome. X4 won't do as well because X3 was weaker.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Umm, did you actually watch the ending of the movie? Two points:
*****SPOILER ALERT*****
1) Last scene before-credits, Magneto makes the metal chess piece twitch. The serum is wearing off. The cure doesn't work.
2) Last scene of the movie, after the credits. The braindead guy in the hospital rolls over and says to the nurse in Patrick Stewart's voice, "Hello Moira". Professor X has transferred his mind into the braindead body.
So, the only two characters in the movie that are really out of the picture are Jean Grey and Scott Summers. And we don't KNOW that Cyclops is dead, we can only assume it, so there's still room for him to come back.
So, if they decide to make a fourth movie, with the cure wearing off, Professor X not dead, and Cyclops possibly not dead, the only character that REALLY can't be in the next one is Jean Grey.
*****END SPOILERS***** - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Was it as good as X1 and X2? No. Was it a good movie? Yes. I enjoyed it, and hope they make a sequel, regardless of who directs it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You're a brainwashed dimwit if you think DaVinci Code was anything that resembled a decent movie. Even the book was terrible.. "Oh geez, we need a 178 digit password. Where in the last 5 pages have we seen a 178 digit number?"
- plausibledenial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I went on opening night, and there was actually applause at the Snakes on a Plane trailer.
Explaining that to my confused friends was amusing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agree with you, the acting wasn't up to par with previous movies, but taken as is, it was just ok.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7HOPE EVERYONE STAYED FOR THE ENDING, AFTER THE CREDITS! only bolded this so you could see it.
if you didnt sit pass the credits, you missed out - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, this IS Digg.
- eternal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The story had more dead ends and filler then anything.
*SPOILERS*
I don't know about you but I "enjoyed" the 5 min ice skating scene that added nothing to the plot other then re-enforcing that Rouge was envious of people who can touch people.
Magento's great "war" consisted of killing a kid who could take powers away from a mutant from 2 feet away. This was dumb because Magneto lifted an entire bridge to get over to the island, but if the sole purpose was just to kill they kid why didn't he just drop the bridge on the building? Instead he had a full frontal assualt to do what he could've done in 5 mins.
What about Charles death and rebirth? Wasn't that also a little hard to take? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually it was about curing homosexuality if homosexuality is really genetic and not a lifestyle choice.
- kvinrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know the temptation is great, but for the love of God, if you have not seen the movie, do NOT show the parent and previous reply comments. Trust me... (I say this because I always look at the heavily -dugg comments, and now I regret it)
- titanass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Prequels are already planned one is the Weapon-X Wolverine movie Hugh is trying to get it done with him as the lead. They have a revision 2 script finished and are in negotiations for its production. So it looks like it is a strong possibility since the success of this film that it will be made.
- LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6*SPOILERS*
Except that in the movie, it's not the Phoenix Force, it's Jean's split personality. Xavier did some psycho-magic on her mind when she was a kid to keep her talent from driving her crazy. Jean is the sane half, Phoenix the not-so sane. No Phoenix Force, just a class 5 (new classification system suddenly introduced) mutant.
Incidentally, do you think that the cure weas off naturally, or that it has to be fought off? It might influence who comes back in the potential next movie. Also, I'd be a bit disappointed if Cyclops came back. I thought his death was handled abysmally in the movie, but resurrection is so cheesy. - Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6actually Magneto told the Juggernaught to kill the kid with his own mouth and words.
- black|math, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The General Public could have probably cared less about who directed it. And those who were "in the know" most likely went to see it anyway.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5don't forget about the magic of prequels
- ThePags, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the story was sub par and the editing and directing was atrocious. such as:
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!
when magneto lifts the golden gate bridge it is a sunny day, and when the bridge lands on Alcatraz it is pitch black out - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"IIRC, this is the last in the trilogy and there aren't supposed to be anymore"
Heh, sure. - MrBond, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah..I knew who directed it, and I still went to see it anways. I didn't bother reading any reviews that morning, so I went in blind. IMHO, it was really dissapointing. All those subtle nuances that Singer was able to add into the first two movies, and still keep the story rolling was utterly lost in X3. Angel was pretty much non-existant, and shoddily planned out as a character. Plus the deaths, and changes (see: cure), of characters really prevented me from enjoying the rest of the movie...
My 0.02 cents. - JimJimBinks, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I was young, there was still hope in me that it might be a good film. I was wrong. But hey, Batman Begins was great and Superman Returns could be amazing.
- HesNikke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i thought it was pretty good, but whatever...
i'm not surprised it had such a big opening.. what with $9 tickets being so common now i think they need to shift to number of tix sold stat rather than $$$ stat, but thats just me - thegreyfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not when they die like a pussy. Did anyone die a hero's death?
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This movie really bothered me. The first two were okay but this one was just mechanical and stupid. I didn't care at all when characters died, it just seemed they were clearing room for the bigger stars at the expense of the story. A definite lowest common denominator flick. I don't blame Ratner, I blame Fox for rushing it. They could have waited another year and gotten Singer, the Cyclops guy and the X2 writers. I hope Marvel takes the rights elsewhere.
- Nineset, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So much wasted potential in this movie...I was disappointed by the lack of character development where most of the newly introduced mutants are barely given a lines worth of explanation. Parts of the movie seem as though they could develop so much more deeply and satisfying such as Angel, but are completely dropped. Not to mention all of the work that was put into the first two films to set up and explain Wolverine's character and the theme was completely dropped in favor of exploring the phoenix as the main character. I'm sorry to say as well after it cut from daylight to pitch black mid scene at the start of the "last stand" I pretty much lost all suspension of disbelief and laughed at the rest of the film. Still in the end I wouldn't tell anyone not to go see as I think a lot of people will enjoy it, but as for me I am highly disappointed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You think Arclight was a transvestite played by a man?

"what was the point of even having rogue in there..."
Rogue symbolized all the homosexuals that desire to be cured so they can live normal lives. In Rogue's case she specifically wanted a boyfriend which she couldn't have because of her condition. - echosierratwo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually thedude13, if you would have stayed past the credit roll, you would not have said that. with that $$$, there is surely going to be another.
- Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well there's someone who clearly didn't wait through the credits
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ticket prices go up every year, so it's kind of hard to compare total earnings if you don't account for inflation and every year like clockwork, another movie will break it . . . a better benchmark would be the publish the total amount of tickets sold (that's something you can compare for movies today to movies years ago)
