- Zipko, on 02/12/2008, -11/+98A pirate AND a ninja?!
This guy just might be the savior of the world - Audacitor, on 02/12/2008, -2/+70Not turning up in court is a bad move. As much as I hate to say it, they probably will catch him, and it'll only have made his situation worse.
Pirates FTW, give 'em hell Hors! - FreeDerry, on 02/12/2008, -1/+37What Really annoys me is That they wasted all that time catching someone who was doing no harm when they could have spent it catching some dirty pedo child molester.
- iidestined, on 02/12/2008, -2/+18Cams and high quality don't really go together...
- beercosoftware, on 02/12/2008, -1/+15This is Canada we're talking about. They'll give him some milk and cookies, and send him on his way with a fine he won't ever be able to pay.
- actorboy, on 02/12/2008, -1/+14Because when you steal a DVD from the store, you are stealing one copy and generally for yourself. When you rip or cam movies and upload them, you have entered into distribution. Two different things.
- subliminalurge, on 02/12/2008, -0/+11"Not turning up in court is a bad move."
Definitely. He was only facing a maximum of 6 months. Not at all worth being on the run for the rest of your life over.
If he was facing something like 25 years, I could see where someone would seriously consider a change of nationality. But to never be able to visit your family and friends again just to avoid 6 months in jail? Nah, not worth it. - Darc, on 02/12/2008, -2/+13You apparently haven't seen the disclaimer at the beginning of all the movies... probably because having pirated versions removes it.... the maximum penalty for unauthorized reproduction of a movie is 5 years in prison, and a $250,000.00 fine.... PER INCIDENT.
Brings up another point. Why is piracy worse than stealing a DVD from a store? If you were to steal a DVD from Circuit City or Best Buy for instance... $19.99 movie.... you sit in a sell for a day or two... or they charge you and make you pay a 100 $ fine or something similar. You took something they physically produced... was able to sell.. on an official box and retail disc.... with logo and everything..... and that's all you get. If you take that same disc... and COPY it.... (so that they can still sell the original if they want or keep it)... now you get a maximum penalty of 5 years in jail and a fine ... for 1 movie... large enough to lose your house?
Somebody.. please say that ain't right. - RuthlessPirate, on 02/12/2008, -0/+11Exactly. If he had been in the US, the MPAA would be calling for millions in fines and the death penalty.
- lolinyerface, on 02/12/2008, -0/+10Must be nice at moms house.
- pinchduck, on 02/12/2008, -1/+10Wow. What an amazingly stupid move. From 6 months in prison and a steep fine to years in prison. maVen has made an astoundingly stupid choice. If you are reading this, contact an attorney and arrange to turn yourself in. Mitigate the damage as soon as possible. You went from having a relatively short stint in prison and a large debt to having your life wrecked. Get your act together before you do yourself even more damage. You won't be a hero, these people on Digg will forget you sooner than the clang of your cell door dies out.
- Radian, on 02/12/2008, -1/+10Sit in a sell?
I guess at least he won't be able to cell any pirated movies from his sell. - spyrochaete, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8actorboy, do you make any more money for a movie that does well? I doubt it. Only some suit profits from sales.
- oxdeltaxo, on 02/12/2008, -2/+10I'm sure he'll find a nice cozy secluded spot to hide.....and rip more vids.
- boscorelle, on 02/12/2008, -3/+11hmm...world leader?
really...honestly - pukiman, on 02/12/2008, -3/+11Eh, you know the feeling. And just so you know, I spent more than two nights at your moms house.
- Navicerts, on 02/12/2008, -2/+9"Pirates" score a win every time a movie is downloaded for free, i think they are winning...
- form3hide, on 02/12/2008, -2/+9Digging up fkr3's comment.
'Pirates' are going about this all wrong -- we need to have the equivalent of the civil rights movement in order for changes to be made within the movie industry. - Machismo, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7RUN TO THE HILLS!!!!!!!
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!! - pukiman, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8I spent two nights in a cell and it was a delight. Had a comfortable bed, a book to read and three hot meals a day. Which ***** jail did you stay in?
- minorthreat, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7"He was only facing a maximum of 6 months"
Have you ever spent a night in jail? I spent one.. I would rather run than spend 179 more... - Pixelante, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7No we won't. He'll be miserable and frightened for days, weeks maybe, and then he'll be caught.
- RyeBrye, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7If he goes down to Panama, he might get thrown into Sona!
- werkerb33, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7No. He messed up and should be man enough to stand and plead his case. If the law is truly unjust he should fight, not run.
But forget the philosophical stuff...the article mentions that he didn't even really break a big law because at the time it was not illegal to cam movie screens. He was only facing a few months and that would have been plead down to a slap on the wrist.
That makes him a huge coward. - BuzzFriendly, on 02/12/2008, -2/+8Exactly. In would much rather have this guy living in my neighborhood.
- subliminalurge, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7Read the article, it clearly states he was facing a maximum sentence of 6 months. He was charged in Canada under Canadian law, not in the U.S., where the warnings you mentioned are enforceable.
- Otto, on 02/12/2008, -3/+9No, not really. I'd rather have people making films because they want to make films instead of because they want to make ***** of money by turning out yet another take on "generic action movie plot #22".
- lolinyerface, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7A Canadian Ninja.....maple leaf throwing stars!
- georgetds, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7How is stealing a freedom we really want to fight for? If it is the laws that you are talking about fighting, there really has to be a better way to do it other then just taking. It is hard to claim to be fighting for freedom, though, while profiting from enjoying the materials you steal.
- insomniac8400, on 02/12/2008, -2/+7I would hope a "criminal" of a non violent crime isn't sent to a prison with murders and rapists.
- Oogler, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6It's called minium security dude, or even house arrest. This guy will not see prison... well he might not have but since he's skipped out who knows.
- werkerb33, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5I had my backpack jacked from my car last week. Only lost some clothes, a cool pack and a laptop charger. Total loss for me = about $300. Assuming that the thief actually tries to sell everything, including the dirty underwear, he's lucky to gain $50. Small stuff, right?
But if this was your stuff in your car, would you suggest just letting the thief go because he did not make "proportionally" large bank on the crime? Maybe if he were caught they should just let him go and say, "Hey buddy. Be nice and stop stealing small things, OK? Please...?"
Step it up: What if your wife/girlfriend is mugged of her $100 purse and you caught up with the thief? Would you coddle him or want to beat his ass?
Most people think nothing of crime until it affects them personally, then act surprised when the rest of the world says "Who cares?"
Cowards steal. Bigger cowards defend them.
Defending this thief by saying Microsoft is also criminal is just plain dumb. OJ got off...does this allow me to kill you and get away with it? Life ain't fair but we need to defend the right thing when it is in our path.
And FWIW, Nobody is forcing you to run XP/Vista and play video games. It's 2008. Run Linux and stop whining already. - inactive, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4He is a hero to many. Deal with it.
- LeCollectif, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Anyone feel like cutting and pasting the article? Work won't let me access torrent sites.
- tarquell, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4mVs is not maVen,
- Otto, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4@Pixelante: Look around. We're already in the middle of the mass revolt. Billions of people are pirating music, movies, games... Whole generations already have no respect for copyright laws. Are you going to imprison the entire population?
Not all revolutions are necessarily violent. - Otto, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5Changing things from within the system only works when the system is not already corrupted.
Since it is, the only way to change the system is to overthrow it and replace it with something else. - cadmiumpaint, on 02/12/2008, -1/+5you're an idiot. freedom fighters put their lives on the line for just causes....not giving lazy, cheap ass tech geeks who live in their parents basement the opportunity to get a high quality copy of "Fools Gold" without paying for it.
- fiestycrumbler, on 02/12/2008, -2/+6how much did he charge?
- crossmr, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4No they're not. You might have a treaty for extradition if you catch someone, but your law has no weight in another country unless they have an identical law, and then its not your law but their law.
- optikal, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Between 2004 and 2006, Geremi Adam, delighted the movie piracy scene with some of the highest quality Telesync movies ever seen. From ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ through to ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ and plenty of other titles, the work of ‘maVen’ set a very high standard for quality pirated movies.
Following an FBI investigation into ‘maVen’, his file was handed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in April 2006. By September of the same year, Geremi Adam was arrested by police outside a Montreal theater after ‘camming’ the movies ‘How to Eat Fried Worms’ and ‘Invincible’. They seized his laptop and other equipment but later released him. A month later he was arrested again outside another theater.
Facing a $25,000 fine and six months in jail, Geremi Adam was ordered to appear in court on 30th January. Clearly unimpressed by the prospect of being locked up and/or bankrupted, he failed to appear in court and has gone on the run.
“We have a warrant and the police officers will try to find Mr. Adam,” said federal prosecutor Yacine Agnaou in a statement. “When he is found, he will be mandated to appear in court.”
Meanwhile, outside the court a demonstration was taking place by a group calling themselves ‘Hors-d-Oeuvre’ who say that ‘maVen’ is being unfairly treated and that all media should be available on the Internet for free. “Free Geremi!” they chanted in unison.
Fortunately for Adam, he committed the alleged offenses before new tough legislation was introduced to punish movie cammers caught in Canada. He will likely escape the severe punishment of 2 years in prison, a fate awaiting fellow cammer, Louis-Rene Hache. RCMP Staff Sgt. Noel St-Hilaire said: “Unfortunately at the time there was no legislation that forbid anyone from filming in a cinema. There’s not much we could do then other than issue a warning.”
Although not turning up at court is likely to inflame the situation, it’ll be interesting to see if the mounties are prepared to put any serious effort into ‘getting their man’ in this instance. - Harbinger67, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3They're gunna need faster horses.
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3your comment wasnt even funny the first time, kind of like the pirates/ninjas meme
- MakinBacon, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Two things are fundamentally wrong with your argument:
1. In this case the RCMP aren't spending man hours and monies in an effort to catch a punk downloading movies... they simply responded to a call placed by the theatre. Subsequently, this guy was arrested for breaking the law. Just as they would arrest someone for breaking any other law. Are you saying that police need to pick and choose which crimes they should respond to?
2. Comparing Canada's law enforcement to that of Iraq? Really? That's how you want to advance your argument? You want us to look to Iraq for a proper legal system? That's like getting your safe-sex education from the town crack-whore... - inactive, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Agreed, except for the part saying he won't be a hero. That's not really your call to make.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2If he's dumb enough to get caught in the first place... there's no way he's going to live happily ever after running from the RCMP.
They are going to catch him. - Rikkochet, on 02/12/2008, -5/+7Yeah, when they began using that tactic in the 90's it all but destroyed IP piracy, didn't it?
- joker10687, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2You know what would suck? Is if movies could somehow come real and like get through the screen and mess with stuff. Unless it was a porn or something that could be cool.
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2I hope they don't catch him.
- form3hide, on 02/12/2008, -1/+3@otto, perhaps I should have worded my response a bit different. If i was able to provide what i do for free, for the love of it, i would... but unfortunately, i have a bills to pay.
the same pretty much applies to everyone who have bills that need to be paid. -
