- InfinitySnatch, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1033I'm pretty sure the terrorists can't get my money if I'm stealing the film myself. If anything, illegal downloading should be hurting bootleg DVD sales.
- hummstheword, on 05/05/2009, -1/+516There's proceeds from film piracy? Where's my money then?
- lumpking69, on 05/05/2009, -2/+392I was just thinking to my self that wolverine made 162M this weekend and it was leaked out like crazy. What leg do they have left to stand on? Its time to stop cry'n and admit that the reason for poor box office number are the crap movies they shove down our throats.
- SigmaXXX, on 05/05/2009, -0/+381The Terrorists don't have to pay to see the movies, so they can save their money for bombs and stuff.
- davincih, on 05/05/2009, -1/+371They're so desperate to deter people from pirating movies they're just making anything up.
- hotbert73, on 05/05/2009, -2/+216So... the MPA has Intelligence that the CIA or MI6 does not? wow these guys are good...
/s
Oh yea... ***** THE MPAA - inactive, on 05/05/2009, -3/+187Those pot selling, movie pirating, baby killing terrorists will stop at NOTHING!
/s - zimsters, on 05/05/2009, -1/+172What next? Maybe he'll say that each time you pirate a film, god kills a kitten?
I guess scare mongering didn't work too well, now they're switching to terror mongering.
***** the MPA. - weeFred, on 05/05/2009, -0/+162I guess this means that everybody should stop using oil then, since that actually does pay for terrorism.
- calidin, on 05/05/2009, -4/+130Put on your tin foil hat for a minute and have some fun with this. There are so many reasons for the studio to intentionally leak this.
1. If the movie fails then it's not the fault of the director, the acting, the worn out genre, or any of the writers.
2. If the movie succeeds then you praise the director, acting, genre, and writers for overcoming against all odds.
3. It's free advertising via word of mouth and "news" outlets.
4. It lets you subtly get the idea across that piracy does hurt revenues as stories from #3 are spread.
5. It lets you fire an undesirable scape goat that keeps parking in your space.
And now... #2 happened, #3 happened, #4 happened so they're adding a #6 - After success, spin #3 into an anti-terrorism campaign. - Boracho, on 05/05/2009, -0/+101You guys don't pay for your pirated material? Wow, I've been getting screwed.
- borez, on 05/05/2009, -3/+99I've always said this, me downloading a film is contributing to the global annihilation of terrorist DVD pedlars. The ONLY reason I do it, is because I want to help. STOP THE TERRORIST... HELP THE STARVING CORPORATIONS.
/a joke. - inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+93How many claws does Wolverine have?
6
How many hands?
2
Flip that six upside-down and put the two in Roman numerals. Now put those together.
That's right, I just blew your mind. - skyjis6, on 05/05/2009, -1/+85Wow. Them saying that this really helped terrorist operations is a reach of stretch armstrong proportions.
- iliveincoto, on 05/05/2009, -0/+83lol, you just brightened my day.
- habbofresh, on 05/05/2009, -1/+79KEEP DOWNLOADING OR THE TERRORISTS WILL WIN!
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+59In related news, The Pirate Bay was discovered to be responsible for the Holocaust. Further investigation is pending.
- fightingforair, on 05/05/2009, -1/+60TORRENTS CAUSE CANCER!! Its true, its based on science I made up.
- Rudegar, on 05/05/2009, -1/+51seriously the check in the mail
- Asianwaste, on 05/05/2009, -1/+49Jet fuel can't melt adamantium.
- longbow486, on 05/05/2009, -0/+45China: You pay now!
- sniffer, on 05/05/2009, -0/+45Funny. They always say it finances something big like terrorism or wars.
It seems to me it's an alarmist statement and should be treated that way.
Having said that, here goes my personal opinion:
***** THE MPAA, RIAA AND ALIKES! MAY THEY BURN IN HELL FOREVER WITH A PINE TREE SHOVED UP THEIR ASSES!
Thank you . - 64705, on 05/05/2009, -0/+41A few extra AK-47 mags go a long way, so I've heard.
- norman619, on 05/05/2009, -0/+40They are being purposefully vague to give the impression downloads are part of it. They are really talking about the huge prate rings which make lots of money from SELLING bootleg copies. There's no money in downloading. It's pure entertainment.
- WeaselMan69, on 05/05/2009, -0/+39Yup, when everything else fails, play the "substantial evidence" and "terrorist" card... everybody is scared about terrorists. Never gets old.
- noahgelman, on 05/05/2009, -1/+39Normal kittens, or sea kittens? Because I don't give a ***** about sea kittens.
- norman619, on 05/05/2009, -0/+38Do your part in the war on terror! Download a copyrighted film today! It's your partiotic duty!
- atm259, on 05/05/2009, -1/+37I wish I could digg you twice.
- norman619, on 05/05/2009, -2/+36This may be a shock to you but not everyone knows the real stories behind these characters. My sister is a prime example. She loved it. I just found it entertaining. She asked me why and I told her the writers ***** with the established stories of these characters way too much yet again. Her reply was "Well, I guess I'm happy I don't know anything about their real stories."
- dynamojoe, on 05/05/2009, -1/+35Excellent breakdown.
- SpoonMSU, on 05/05/2009, -0/+33Dugg for Stretch Armstrong.
- michaelpinto, on 05/05/2009, -35/+68Wait we need some "9/11 Truth" types to claim a connection between Wolverine and the Trade Towers blowing up...
- calidin, on 05/05/2009, -1/+34Possible scenarios:
1. The terrorists/pirates/ninjas put the movies on Ad supported sites
2. The terrorists/pirates/ninjas sell bootleg copies of the movies that they've downloaded.
3. The terrorists/pirates/ninjas perform a Mission Impossible (old, not new) style theft of the original reel and hold it for ransom unless the studios pay millions and millions of ruples.
My money would have been on violent crime, government corruption, or drug smuggling as a real source of cash, but maybe the terrorists/pirates/ninjas are trying to diversify in this troubling economic climate. - borez, on 05/05/2009, -1/+34"Piracy Supports Terrorism"
In that case there must be an awful lot of Chinese DVD selling terrorists out there.
/s - Silentnite85, on 05/05/2009, -0/+32It's not pure entertainment. I downloaded Twilight once, and accidentally watched it.
- Waiting2awake, on 05/05/2009, -1/+33You know what else supports and funds terrorists? Cars, and people that buy cars... at least that is what I heard at the annual horse and buggy association meeting.
Progress, is always terrible for those that refuse to innovate. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+31Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you want to get technical (as opposed to going by popular usage of the terms), isn't there a difference between actual piracy and mere copyright infringement? Piracy is when you burn bootleg copies of films and sell them; copyright infringement is when you download it for your own usage. So while technical piracy may be funding any number of things, the actual crackdown is hitting primarily the copyright infringement crowd (stemming, I would assume, from the very sound principle that they latter are less likely to be carrying sidearms).
- radio1mike, on 05/05/2009, -2/+32Overheard @ The MPA:
"Uh oh. Piracy did not affect the Wolverine opening weekend blockbuster!"
"Hmmm... What if we blame terrorism..?"
"Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket!" - ramonday, on 05/05/2009, -5/+34Wolverine was good? Let's not jump to conclusions, now.
- Hurricane, on 05/05/2009, -1/+30Bittorrent created a time paradox that lead to 9/11, I thought everybody knew that.
- emotecontrol, on 05/05/2009, -0/+28The whole point of pirating films is so that you don't have to pay for the damn film. If some jackasses are buying bootleg copies of movies and that money is going to fund terrorism, those people should learn to download movies like everyone else does.
Seriously, if piracy in Asia is going to fund terrorists, the only sensible thing to do--because you won't ever, ever stop piracy--is distribute the films for free to eliminate the black market. If it's a question of saving lives and avoiding terrorism, isn't that the only moral thing to do?
You could say that people should stop pirating, but that's like saying they should stop jaywalking. Not going to happen. If there's a real problem with pirate DVD sales going to fund terrorists, we need to make the films freely available. Otherwise innocent people will die. If the MPAA disagrees, they're in favour of terrorism. - roseap, on 05/05/2009, -0/+27You used to be cool China!
- UselessTrivia, on 05/05/2009, -1/+28Let's use the right names for thing: What they're talking about is bootlegging, which is a form of piracy, but is distinct enough to be considered its own act. Nobody makes money from Piracy, except I suppose the search engines that collect ad revenue from users searching for illicit wares, but that isn't what they're talking about here.
They're talking about DVDs made from cheap handicam filmings of a movie while it plays in the theater. It's huge in india, china, etc...because DVDs are too expensive for their cost of living and thus the 2-3 dollar bootlegs are the cheapest option. - graemee, on 05/05/2009, -1/+27You wouldn't download a Ninja.
- dashdingo, on 05/05/2009, -0/+26China still cool! You pay later! Later!
- JDLamb88, on 05/05/2009, -0/+25Don't you get it you fool!??! The MPA IS the CIA and MI6!
- Myztry, on 05/05/2009, -0/+24I have a friend who has a litter of kittens they can't get rid off. So I downloaded a movie to help out...
- vptel, on 05/05/2009, -5/+27what?!
- enginbeeringSB, on 05/05/2009, -0/+19I think #3 is the key here, especially since the leaked copy was unfinished. One of the only reasons to see this movie was for the special effects, and watching the leaked version doesn't satisfy this.
Viral marketing via piracy? Very clever... - inmymindzi, on 05/05/2009, -0/+18Up next: Rand Corporation links Gucci knockoffs to the swine flu epidemic.
