- BLyday, on 05/07/2009, -2/+78Good for Fox. That's 4 million refunds they don't have to give out.
- apastafarian, on 05/07/2009, -6/+56FTA- "Indeed, at last year's average ticket price of $7.18, the piracy could conceivably -- though not likely -- have cost Fox $28.7 million."
I'll bet the true damage is much closer to $0 than $28.7 million. It's a crying shame how poorly this movie is doing in the box office! /s - thelastcivilian, on 05/07/2009, -1/+37It wouldn't be the first time that studios have made up numbers in talking about piracy.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -1/+36Reminds me of Radiohead's release of In Rainbows. Downloaded a crap load of times, and still hit number 1 on the charts.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -1/+31I would like to fully and publicly disassociate myself from this Digger with whom I unfortunately share the same numerical suffix.
- FXNGLAS, on 05/07/2009, -0/+29I'm sure Fox is badly hurting for that 28.7 million too. /s
$7.18 average ticket price??? It's $10.50 to see a movie where I am from. - BLyday, on 05/07/2009, -0/+28Yeah except people like Radiohead.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 05/07/2009, -1/+26Burying down trolls is only the first step. We need to start tracking down trolls who post retarded comments and put them behind bars, or at least hit them with a banhammer. Trolls must understand that what they do could have serious consequences. Only then can we eradicate this Internet of retardedness and stupidity.
- geesamba, on 05/07/2009, -0/+24Probably two tickets at ~$12 a piece. Amazing how some diggers instantly think the price is for a single ticket because they always go alone...
- MrInfallible, on 05/07/2009, -0/+23Why stop at 4 million! 10 Billion illegal downloads would be more catchy.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+23Did that ticket come with a Thai hooker?
- orthodoxDrew, on 05/07/2009, -1/+24oh yeah hey sorry bout that mpaa i had to keep my ratio up
- jericko, on 05/07/2009, -6/+24"Blurayrip, dvdrip, whatever, they are no comparison to a theater experience. "
Crying Babies, people on cell phones/texting, commercials before the movie, the insane price of tickets, and the unconformable seats.
vs,
Watching a blu-ray rip at home on my 61" 1080p TV with surround sound on a comfy couch.
Your right, about no comparison to the theater experience - icepick314, on 05/07/2009, -1/+17what's the download count for The Dark Knight?
probably more than 4 million...and yet it was done VERY well in theaters...
the difference? It was MUUUUCH better movie!!!! - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+16lol, so is watching your neighbor's movie through his window with a pair of binoculars piracy also? he's not losing out on his movie time, and you get to watch it for free, but at a slight disadvantage.
It's not that you're unpopular, I think retarded would be a better adjective. - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -1/+17I'm not sure what World of Warcraft has to do with this.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+14That number sounds low guys, I think it was more like eleventy billion times. Fox missed out on ten eleventy billion dollars due to piracy.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+12touche
- MetalCharms, on 05/07/2009, -0/+12You are not helping jericko.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 05/07/2009, -0/+10Are you serious? You sound like your are joking.
What we need is to show the movie studios that we aren't willing to pay $10 per person to see a movie that will cost us only $15 to buy and watch at home when it comes out.
What we need to do is show these big movie studios that they need to think outside the box and start offering movies same day they come out to people in-home so that we don't have to go to a movie theatre to watch a movie when we have a perfectly good theatre in our homes.
What we need to do is show these big movie theatres that their 20 min of commercials is not what what we paid for when we go to a movie.
What we need to do is show these big movie theatres is that we aren't paying our money to watch a bunch of advertisements placed in the open in movies, thus ruining the movie.
What we don't need to do is stop revolting against the system and causing them to re-think their monopoly. It is only by challenging their closed loop system that we will force a better movie watching and movie owning system.
I think you need to re-think what you consider stealing and what you consider fair use of things that you pay for. - Frankie4Fingers, on 05/07/2009, -0/+10People didn't go and watch the movie because it just wasn't that good, not because it was awesome and they just downloaded it.
The second reason is because of the prices of movies. It costs a family of 4 over $40 to watch one movie these days. In this recession, it is much more cost beneficial to just sit at home and wait until the movie comes out on video and pay the $15 for the Blue-Ray. Or even better, wait until it comes to Netflix and just rent it for your $8.99 a month fee.
Movies just cost too much for the normal person now. - IFEice, on 05/07/2009, -2/+12They're stupid, a lot of people would download it as well as see it in the theaters.
Blurayrip, dvdrip, whatever, they are no comparison to a theater experience. - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8It's a crying shame that this movie is doing well at all. It's awful.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+9I want my $24 back - the movie was a pile of cheesy turd.
- MrInfallible, on 05/07/2009, -1/+9$24?
- rjc5056, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8I'd download this leaked non-CGI version myself just to see if it's any better than the *****-sicle I saw in theaters, but seeing as the atrocious writing will be unchanged, I'll pass.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8And all the free advertising these guys gave TPB has nothing to do with it..
- trucanadian, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8yeah i think its definately hurt the box office a bit, although not as much as fox would have you believe.
- Avenger772, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8I feel a disturbance in the force... 4 million voices screaming out in agony!
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6Hmm maybe FOX did this on PURPOSE because THEY KNEW IT WAS A STINKER.
Better to blame pirates than like, you know, themselves. - damack, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7The viral advertising associated with the movie being leaked probably did more for its sales than any crappy fox promotion.
It's a shame that they won't admit piracy makes little to no difference though. I mean how can you deny it anymore seeing the numbers for some piece of crap that destroys all your fond memories of Wolverine are so high.
We've always known the whole piracy thing is corporate ***** like most of the crap they throw at us and now they've been caught with their pants down. As far as I'm concerned the piracy debate is over. - jcastillo81, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6It's too bad we will never know how many of those downloaders A: Watched it at home and went to the theater also. B: Never planned on paying to see it in the first place C: Watched it at home and DIDN'T go to the theater because their childhood dreams were squashed by a pile of poorly animated CG adamantium poo.
- Shakermaker, on 05/07/2009, -1/+8I've always thought this was a brilliant idea as well.
There are certain movies I will want to see in a theatre (The new Star Trek, District 9, Terminator: Salvation - movies with lots of great visual effects), but for the most part, if I had the opportunity to NOT pay for parking, NOT pay for expensive snacks - NOT to sit in only certain seats if the best seats are taken, and NOT to worry about whether or not I should wait for two weeks to see a "blockbuster" because you'll get some douche kids and their girlfriends talking through the whole movie....I would easily pay $30 for a Blu-Ray release, and watch it on my big screen at home. - maxer64, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7At least your date made the pain of a horrible movie all better right? Or was there an awkward ass-out hug involved at the end of the night?
- neelshiv, on 05/07/2009, -1/+8Hey Fox, fyi, I downloaded it and showed it to 8 or so people. We all thought it was absolutely terrible.
If it makes you feel better, we would be a lot more angry at you if we had paid to see that garbage. The missing special effects were the best part of it. They were simultaneously hilarious (fake plane crashing into a building and exploding during the title sequence) and interesting. - LordRahl72, on 05/07/2009, -2/+9There is a good lesson here somewhere.
How about releasing movies on DVD and Blu-Ray same day as theatrical release?
Theaters need to go the way of the Arcade. No need for them anymore since most of us get a better experience at home. - acknotSW, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6Does fox give refunds for bad movies?
- KarlH, on 05/07/2009, -0/+5I'm going to take that to mean you still watched the movie multiple times. The comment becomes funnier that way.
- 64705, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4Downloaded 4 million times; is it really that good a film? To me it looks quite trite.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+5Fox should have done a better job of promoting Idiocracy, instead of betting on this piece of crap!
- inkubusfan, on 05/07/2009, -1/+5its true. Quality TV's and surround sound systems are readily available and affordable. Hollywood will soon enough find themselves in a predicament because I, for one, enjoy watching movies at home much more than in the theater. Sounds like a lot of diggers feel the same way.
oh and Wolverine sucked. - Stanslikewh0a, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3Whatever.. It being downloaded 4 million times doesn't make it suck any less.
- Travelsonic, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4"And you deprived them of $90 in the process."
Illogical - they never had that $90 in the process , you can not deprive them of something they didn't have - which means merely wanting to make $90 doesn't mean you deserve to, or will make it. It is simple logic.
"Would you like your boss to say to you "Hey. We don't want to pay you, but we want you to come in on Saturday and work an extra shift." "
Yor comparison does not work - movie / music production works different than an office job - even down to how one gets paid [for how long you work, IIRC]. - Shakermaker, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3Came in to say this.
I saw it in the theater and it was a gigantic steaming turd. The opening credit sequence was really cool though. - tao52nyc, on 05/07/2009, -1/+5And we believe anything Fox tells us....because??? It would not surprise me if they inflated their numbers by a factor of four to suit their own ends. And despite the nonsense spewed by Aleman360, et al, there is no proven correlation between downloads and lost revenue. That's just a huge wish on the studio's part. If Fox didn't want Wolverine downloaded, they should have policed their own ***** studio better, because in this case it was an inside job.
- Chooxo, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4Makes sense. Indeed, some may have held off DL'ing the unfinished version so that they could download the cinema release version later.
- matu4251, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3What hurts the movie the most are bad reviews. I was planning to go see it (with my wife) but decided to wait for the dvd after reading everywhere that the movie was terrible... Can't wait for Star Trek and Terminator tough.
- TheXboxReview, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4It was a great action movie IMO. But yeah, it is extremely expensive to watch movies in a theater... personally I like sitting on my couch & watching a movie with good friends way more
- pr1zm, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4$2.50 here.
- nilhilustfreder, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4Downloading things isn't even prosecuted as a crime. Distributing it is the crime.
