But the one thing they shouldn't do is send him from the same time as Spock Prime, since the Kirk in the original Star Trek timeline died in Generations.

And JJ. Abrams didn't budge as there was no place in the plot for old Kirk to come into play. Kirk is dead in the Star Trek universe for one thing... the only way to work him in would be the alternate future Kirk wouldn't have died there and could have come back... but that sounds more like a Soap Opera than Star Trek to me.

I think it works. The consistency would have been thrown out for fan service. I wouldn't have been upset if they did have Shatner come in just for that, but if I was a movie goer that didn't know anything about StarTrek, I would have been confused as to why T. J. Hooker was reading "...to seek out new worlds and new civilizations...".

Now that this is an alternate reality, if anybody from the original universe went back in time they would go back in time to their own universe, not the universe of the reboot.

But who knows, it seems they have established the Trek universe as a Multiverse regardless, writers can pick any version. Cannon Trek is in one, mirror universe, Enterprise universe, and now Abrams Star Trek universe. -
