- Braindead360, on 08/08/2008, -0/+53There will definitely be a third movie, and I do believe that it will be the last in Nolan's story arc. However, I don't think that they will adapt it from Frank Millers graphic novel, however groundbreaking it may be. Doing this would lead to having to make way to many critical decisions such as recasting. At this point Bale, Freeman, and Caine are just to big of players in Nolan's universe for the execs to drop them.
- betheturtle, on 08/09/2008, -0/+42I think it's the black chess piece. Is this in reference to that match on the news recently?
- JFallon126, on 08/09/2008, -0/+41The only problem with Ledger's Joker being so good is that it's going to be tough recasting him...even in a future setting like in The Dark Knight Returns. I don't know if another Joker will work.
I think Two-Face isn't dead but I don't know what his role will be exactly... - inactive, on 08/09/2008, -7/+46it'll be really hard to top heath ledger, you'll see.
- Vancent, on 08/09/2008, -3/+41Why would Chris Nolan rework the entire cast, recast Ledger's phenomenal Joker, and fast forward 15 years into the future so that he could make his movie "thematically sound"? Doesn't sound very Nolan-like to me.
- ThePenrod, on 08/09/2008, -0/+33I honestly don't think that's what The Dark Knight (movie) was setting up for. I really feel that even if Ledger had not died, the Joker would not be the main player in the last film. His character, in the Nolan-verse, is ultimately summed up in his last speech to Batman "We're bound to do this forever." Dark Knight was about dualism. Harvey is contrasted by Two-Face, his other half. Batman is contrasted by the Joker, his other half. Neither the Joker or Batman really wins, neither side of the Batman/Joker duality really comes out on top. I think thematically Nolan wouldn't want to deviate. Plus, Batman won't kill him, especially in Nolan's movies, because it is so central to the character. Though I am sure the third film will be the light at the end of the tunnel for Batman, contrasting Dark Knight's morbid tone, the film really doesn't appear to set up for Joker's second appearance.
None of this however detracts from rumors that a movie about Dark Knight Returns could be made by Snyder or that a Batman movie, separate from Nolan's continuity, couldn't be well received by the public. - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -3/+36FTA: "Which brings us back to the three-act structure: Act One (Batman Begins) was the first Batman story. Act Two (The Dark Knight) was a classic tragic turning point."
I predict Act Three will include Ewoks. - wontstoptalking, on 08/09/2008, -4/+34It was so hard to not reply to this with
"But Ledgers do"
until I realized how wrong that was. - MOJIRA, on 08/09/2008, -0/+27So Batman stays in his thirties or maybe ages to his forties and the Joker ages to his seventies?
That's a terrible idea. - Phasmorphage, on 08/09/2008, -1/+26well he might have to recast the joker for obvious reasons
- motivatedguy, on 08/09/2008, -2/+27Daniel Day Lewis to me is the only actor that could stand with Ledger's performance; Maybe even top it. But you cannot shut down a franchise because of an actor's death. Life goes on
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -7/+32I think Johnny Depp has a good chance to atleast match Heath if he played the Riddler.
- ozziek, on 08/09/2008, -1/+23Will Batman's voice get deeper in the 3rd one?
- bagelmaster, on 08/09/2008, -1/+21If you're on digg and don't get jokes about ewoks then please do everyone else a favor and get the ***** off digg.

- latrosicarius, on 08/09/2008, -0/+16FTA: next batman will be "the final battle of Batman and the Joker"
I would hate to be the actor who has to fill heath ledger's shoes.
also FTA: "The next film needs to further "escalate" the series, and be even bigger and bolder than The Dark Knight."
Yeah... because making things epicer and EPICer always work out well. (matrix sequels, pirates of the caribbean sequels, spider-man sequels, star wars prequels, etc)
This is how movies series are killed. People love the first movie because of the story, the attention to detail, the acting, and other well-done original aspects. People DON'T wan't sequels that are just more of the same, packaged with bigger battles, flashier special effects, more supervillans, and more of the same. Even if you think you want that, you don't. - TheWriteGuy, on 08/09/2008, -1/+15I really feel that the next main villain should be Black Mask, because he'd fit the most into the BatNolan-verse: He's a mob gang leader whose identity is a mystery because he wears a skull-faced mask. He would be a "freak" leading the Gotham mob scene, and fighting against another freak (Batman). So in order for the Gotham mobs to effectively deal with Batman, they need their own freak. Yin and yang. (If the studio wanted to hype this up, they could attempt to keep the identity of the actor who plays Blask Mask secret all throughout the production and even off the opening credits and movie posters -- you would have to watch the movie if you want to learn which mystery actor is playing the role.)
If the Joker is to reappear (and I think the character needs to), I imagine him locked up in Arkham, appearing in a couple of scenes where he shares Hannibal Lecter-like interaction with Batman. (And towards the end, Dr. Harlan Quinzel breaks him out -- perhaps even with the help of Batman, who for some twisted-logic reason needs the Joker back on the street to help defeat Black Mask.)
Yes, Ledger will be difficult to replace, but I think it's do-able. The next actor should play the Joker after what has happened to the character after spending a few years locked up in Arkham: The Joker wears his hair shorter, neatly combed; puts on his make-up evenly; and dresses more fine. In other words, in appearance, he evolves into the Joker we're familiar with from the comic books. So it could then be considered that Ledger played the Joker as a younger man -- who was all wild-looking and messy. The next actor would then play the role as the next step in the evolution of the Joker. - staplez, on 08/09/2008, -3/+15Making people old isn't that hard. The bigger question I would have is how do you just pop in Superman and Green Lantern? I mean that would be kind of weird to suddenly add those two in Nolan's universe.
- celotil, on 08/09/2008, -0/+12I just saw The Dark Knight last night. (SPOILERS BELOW)
I found it kind of sad, remembering as the credits rolled, that Ledger died, then I found it bitterly ironic.
The mad-man who lived, Joker, dies in real life, while the actor who played Harvey "Two Face" Dent, lives but his character died - there was a memorial service and everything, with Gordon and Wayne knowingly covering up Dent's misdeeds after he went a little crazy, giving Gotham their White Knight who martyred himself for justice, and turning Batman into the villain instead because the symbol of Batman could take it and keep on fighting.
It was rather a poignant bit after the pantomime with the ferries - who didn't think that the Joker ***** everyone there and simply gave each boat their OWN detonator so they'd blow themselves up? - wontstoptalking, on 08/09/2008, -0/+11Yeah, but hopefully I won't be like Spiderman.
"Hmm...we've made a bajillion billion dollars, and everyone who's seen Spiderman 1 and 2 are going to see 3 no matter how bad it is.....***** it! Let's give 'em the Sandman!" - inspecality, on 08/09/2008, -1/+11Not that difficult to understand...
- Depthfunction, on 08/09/2008, -0/+8There's just no way the Joker will be in the third installment unless Ledger pulls a Jesus/Dionysus/Osiris and returns from the dead. Perhaps Nolan's original idea was to feature the Joker in the third movie, but once Ledger died those plans must have been scrapped. I don't care who you found to play the Joker, the comparisons between the new actor and Ledger would just be so overwhelming and so distracting that I can't believe Nolan would allow it, nor do I think any respectable actor would want to take the role.

- FearlessFreep, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7Roger Moore says "Hi!"
- mtcobb2, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8I understand Nolan not wanting Superman and Robin in his movies, but I don't think the rest of the DKR story would hold up as such a great story without them.
And besides, I don't think Nolan would just discard Christian Bale for an older actor when Bale is such a great Batman and such a big part of the success of the films... - BevansDesign, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7"The Dark Knight Returns" could be a good Part 5 or 6, but not now. And probably not ever.
DKR is sort of the end of the series in a lot of ways. And DK just introduced the primary antagonist. Making DKR now would be like reading The Hobbit and then reading the last half of Return of the King.
DKR, as far as I can tell, takes place about 20 years from where the movies are right now. They could also film The Killing Joke before it, which seems to be about 15 years out or so.
And I agree that they can't remove Superman from the story (GA could be removed, unfortunately). And there's so much back-history to consider, like why Batman quit in the first place, and there are plenty of Justice League-related story elements. It would be very difficult to film all of that. They'd probably have to film it like Superman and the JL aren't part of the Batman mythos, which would be unfortunate. After all, the coolest part of the whole book is when the "good guy" comes after the other "good guy".
And plus, there are all the Cold War overtones... - HouseofEl, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7No one has said there would only be three movies. That's just people thinking that a trilogy is the only way to go these days. I wouldn't be shocked that we see four movies or even more than that. I think they have this set up that they could wait years and do more down the road with breaks in between. Also, it's been reported that all rumors and stories are nothing but bs. Nolan and company aren't talking about a story yet and that we shouldn't expect any real news about what the next film will be until about a year from now.
- MrSkills, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6What about the other 7%?
- alexforcefive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+6and JAZZ!!!
- Protoss, on 08/10/2008, -0/+6Well he pulled off the role so well, even if he were alive he'd get praised. Perfect villain.
- bagelmaster, on 08/09/2008, -1/+7People digging you down have obviously not read The Dark Knight Returns.
Hint: Both Superman and the Green Lantern are in the book. - spyraled, on 08/09/2008, -3/+9I've actually been intrigued by Brad Pitt doing something similar to Ledger's Joker. If you've seen him in 12 Monkeys and Fight Club (think of the scene where the bar owner is beating him) then you know he can be crazy, he just gets stuck with all the crappy "pretty boy" roles too often.
- chillybeans27, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6Just where do you think you are, vagrantwade?
- LemonChicken, on 08/09/2008, -3/+9Daniel Day Lewis "maybe" topping it? Alright, everybody. Let's get one thing straight here. Heath Ledger was good as the Joker. He was damn good. But it was not the greatest performance in the entirety of cinema. Heath Ledger is not Daniel Day Lewis. One role cannot justify that kind of comparison.
- WhoDoneIt, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6I can understand your point, and it makes sense, but if you really think that clicking on zny link to a Batman story isn't going to have spoilers or debating in it at this point since the movies release you might has well not click on any story and save yourself grief.
And if you really cared, I'm assuming you would have seen the movie already. - tm13lke, on 08/09/2008, -0/+5amusing yes...convincing ehhh
- JoWiGo, on 08/09/2008, -0/+5The big enemy in the last one was scarecrow, and he was in it for a very limited number of shots and mainly for continuation purposes. They could definately get away with not having the joker return.
- Konstantino, on 08/09/2008, -1/+6Because he isn't?
- TJunkers, on 08/09/2008, -4/+8Also if you remember in The Dark Knight. Christian Bales asks Morgan Freeman: "Will it stop a dog?" to which he replies: "Perhaps a cat..." So I'm guessing Catwomen could be next! I'd love to see Christopher Nolan's interpretation of Catwomen.
- Jhiaxuz, on 08/10/2008, -1/+5Just because Heath is gone does not mean there is nobody out there who can take his spot because we had no way of knowing that Heath was capable of doing until it was done. When they made A Knight's Tale, they weren't like "Heath, I hear you're the best Joker around".
I hate how all the sudden Heath is the greatest actor because he pulled off a role which has only been done once before him as played by Jack Nicholson. - Slique22, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4I personally thought that the Joker story has been wrapped up pretty well at the end of TDK. Think about it; the Joker continually tried to force Batman's hand into murder throughout the film, but continually failed. And, after the final showdown, wound up arrested and no doubt sent back to Arkham.
Of course, there would have been a lot of ways to build upon this in a third film, but considering the turn of events over Heath's death, the ending was pretty lucky. It would have been a lot worse if the Joker had gotten away or ended with a character-cliffhanger.
Plus, I think that including the Joker in a third film would take away from some of TDK's charm. I mean, it's almost as if it's HIS film. - Protoss, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4And a Conor Oberst haircut.
- norm7, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5Dark Knight Returns would make for a lame movie, honestly.
-geriatric Batman?
-geriatric villains?
-lame futuristic street gangs?
-Robin?
-a ridiculous Superman vs. Batman battle?
Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. - smashfest, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4The only bad thing about the Nolans' realistic setting is that it pretty much nullifies any hope for a good comic storyline adaptation or Justice League/DC team up movies featuring Batman. All the powers and supernatural elements just wouldn't fly. It would probably take a while for audiences to get used to seeing Batman on the big screen like that. There's still that bitter Schumacher taste in their mouths, no matter how good TDK was.
- AeroMerde, on 08/09/2008, -3/+7I just don't see how I could ever really get past the Joker being played by someone completely different in the next Nolan Batman. I just don't see how it could fit. They got away with changing Rachel, but that's a bit different.
- Slique22, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4Spider-man 2 was pretty badass. Possibly better than the first, even.
But yeah, the 3rd was awful. -
