- dezweber, on 10/09/2008, -2/+61I think it's definitely going to be a film you either love or hate...you either "get it" or you don't. No Country for Old Men was that sort of film and managed to win accolades. I think it will all hinge on marketing. If this film is sold as a typical comic book hero kind of film, it could fail miserably. If, somehow, the public notices - or even better, appreciates - that this is not a superficial popcorn movie, but a catalyst for rumination, it could actually do well.
- pitchblack16, on 10/09/2008, -4/+56***** ya
- Rollic, on 10/09/2008, -3/+37It all comes down to how well Snyder translates Watchmen into a movie. I don't want a shot-by-shot tribute to the original comic that tries to retell the story panel-by-panel. I want a good movie FIRST, and a faithful adaptation second. If this turns into a Watchmen slideshow, I don't think it's going to connect with audiences.
- thewhits, on 10/09/2008, -3/+28I don't care if America is going to see it, I WILL see it, probably more than once.
- Burrito, on 10/09/2008, -2/+26I vote yes. The Americans that can't handle it are the idiots that will probably watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
- Wetzilla, on 10/09/2008, -1/+24I could have sworn Snyder said he WASN'T going to change the ending, that the studio had wanted to but he insisted they keep it the same.
- shimmi147, on 10/09/2008, -3/+25I actually thought of this the other day.. How many people actually know what the ***** 'The Watchmen' is? The Night Owl is gonna be seen as a rip off of Batman by many, i'm sure..
I'm positive that many of those who are unfamiliar with the graphic novel will not be willing to sit through 2+ hours of this. If this was the late 80's, they probably would. - rollerboy, on 10/09/2008, -0/+19I loved the ending, I might have been the only one that didn't see it coming but I thought it was a great twist. And it's nice to see a movie that is made for the core audience not necessarily the mainstream. It's no easy task to please both audiences like The Dark Knight did.
- pixelfox, on 10/09/2008, -0/+16"Can an adaptation be too faithful to its source material?"
Yes. There's a line between pleasing the fans and pleasing everyone else. You're better off doing one or the other; trying to do both often ends up ruining the whole thing for both parties. Who knows which path Watchmen will take. - cli006, on 10/09/2008, -1/+16The trailer alone has me really excited. I love the style they're going for and I think they'll try and hype up the movie a lot. Won't break any blockbuster records but I think it'll do really well at the box office.
- aerosuperbatics, on 10/09/2008, -1/+15You might be surprised by this one...
The current political climate makes watchmen seem more relevant than ever. - Gnarstache, on 10/09/2008, -0/+12with the successes of Iron Man, Incredible Hulk and The Dark Knight, a lot of people still have that superhero movie buzz which is vital in attracting the mainstream audience to see Watchmen. The release date however is killing my buzz personally, but I have a lot of patience and I'm sure this movie will kick ass.
- UselessTrivia, on 10/09/2008, -1/+12I don't know what the hell Watchmen is all about...it sounds pretty sweet...but what convinced me I HAD to see it was the IMAX trailer during Dark Knight.
It was fricken incredible. - inactive, on 10/09/2008, -5/+15Geeks alone cam make a movie huge box office. Look at transformers, how many people over 25 you think went to see a movie adaptation of a cartoon from 20 years ago?
*****, they make a Micronauts movie, I'll go 10 times. - cadmiumpaint, on 10/09/2008, -0/+10i don't think thats accurate. My GF saw transformers because we're children of the 80s. I'd bet youa billion dollars she will not care about the watchmen
- DekarCorvus, on 10/09/2008, -1/+11Kevin smith saw 20 minutes of it or something like that...
and he was blown away. he could match each scene with a frame from the book. apparently thats how good it was done.
so i'll be lookin forward to it! - grantface, on 10/09/2008, -0/+10I think many people would watch this film based on that first trailer alone, even if there was no source material. Since that trailer copies of Watchmen have been flying off the shelves so people are obviously interested... that's what I hear anyway.
- Azriel7, on 10/10/2008, -0/+9Yea, I thought I read that they are keeping the ending from the novels and having an alternative ending option in the DVD. I disagree with the author, the ending in the books was perfect and wasn't cheesy. You didn't see it coming at all and at the end you were like WTF?!?! I hope its the original and hollywood hasn't fracked up ANOTHER franchise by changing the ending of a source material which changes the meaning of the (ruined)whole story (like the did with I am legend).
- hauntedchippy, on 10/09/2008, -3/+12What a pompous piece of ***** article. It's a good story, of course people will see it.
- ChefEspeff, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8Disappointing ending?! Whaaaaaaaaaaa? I loved the ending to Watchmen.
- B3000, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8"2. Ridiculous-looking costumes. If there's one thing director Christopher Nolan has proven with his two Batman movies, it's that audiences respond to superhero movies in as realistic a setting as possible."
Oh, really? I think Spiderman, Iron Man and Hellboy might disagree with you. - elizabethb221, on 10/09/2008, -1/+9Hopefully the end is NOT nigh.
- BTConan, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8I just started reading it for the first time, and I thank you for not spoiling it.
- AManWithNoName, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8I honestly don't think it matters whether or not it's successful with non-fans. In fact, some of my favorite all-time movies sucked at the box office (RHPS and Big Lebowski come to mind), and if the movie fails in theaters, that will only help to concrete the franchise's already-strong cult status.
As for Snyder, I'm a bit worried about that, but let's wait till we see it before we start complaining. Realize that Nolan's big breakout film was Batman Begins, and I remember having a conversation with a batman fan before it came out, and he was upset they chose someone relatively unknown to handle his favorite hero. Now, he praises Nolan as the savior of the superhero movie (As he should). My point is, this may be the film that makes us change our minds about Snyder, and we need to give him the chance to do it.
People need to quit making up their minds about movies before they see them. - Bilabrin, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8Read the graphic novel.
- Kronos6948, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7I don't know if I agree with you, Shimmi. I saw the trailer a while back, and although I've read a few comic books in my time, I never really read the Watchmen. So, after seeing the trailer, I decided to read it. I'm up to book 6 now, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss this movie.
So, here's to hoping that the trailer piqued people's interests enough to do some research. - Tyrghast, on 10/09/2008, -2/+9If we aren't all living in cardboard boxes by the time Watchmen is finished, of course we will.
- SniperZ, on 10/10/2008, -0/+7Its pretty obvious we will watch anything, i.e. Beverly Hills Chihuahua being number one at the box office...
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2008, -0/+7hey I turned off the political section on digg for a reason. does every god damn thing have to be political?
- RobotBuddha, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7"Lack of Star Power."
I wonder how much this matters anymore. I'm not saying it does or doesn't, but actual curiosity. I really can't think of any actor who could be in a movie and guarantee my attendance. Even with the most talented, there's such a tradition of doing crappy movies to allow them to put an actual performance into lower budget films. - B3000, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7Wait, you still think people give a ***** about a good story?
- theragu40, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7Hey yaanu, thanks for being a *****.
- bonk2k, on 10/10/2008, -0/+6Whats the number one movie at the box office right now? Go ahead check imdb.
Were doomed. - inactive, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6"Blade Runner-meets-the Fifth Element" ::drools::
- justinil, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6Ok, fine, good points, whatever. But really, Synder isn't on the same level as ... Sam Raimi? Since when was Raimi directing sweeping, historic, multi-layered epics? Don't get me wrong, I love Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, but when I think of directors that have the chops to tackle Watchmen, Sam Raimi is not in the top three, and definitely not that far above Snyder.
- brodiquine, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6Just pay attention to Rorschach.
- 22pages, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6i went to see the dark knight in a packed imax theatre and when they showed the watchmen trailer i clapped and whistled
people looked at me like i was friggin crazy. they had obviously no idea what it was despite their clear enthusiasm for the batman movie
so, i agree unless the marketing effort is done really well, many people will just ignore this movie as they've never read the watchmen - TaosSW, on 10/10/2008, -0/+6Most people did not know about the Battle of Thermopylae or the Frank Miller graphic novel before "300" came out, either. Just because it is in a niche market at the moment doesn't mean it can't move out of it. All they need is a good movie coupled with good marketing.
- jsully, on 10/09/2008, -1/+6"Moore's original novel comprises 12 densely packed issues, with enough subtext to rival J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy."
I liked Watchmen, but that's a ridiculous statement. - estee0703, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5the graphic novel was amazing
any "main stream" ***** who can't appreciate the movie isn't worth mentioning - campusten, on 10/09/2008, -1/+6Also, Downey Jr. is NOT in the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409459/
I think you're thinking of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who looks a little like Downey. - inactive, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5 march 2009
- cadmiumpaint, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5i haven't been keeping up....did they resolve the legal crap and figure out a release date yet?
- Xihix, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5It will either bomb or do extremely well. I've said this for months now... I remember when they showed the trailer before TDK started. Quantum and T4 got so many cheers, and then when Watchmen ends, the whole crowd is silent. It's clear it's not a well known graphic novel in the mainstream, and the Snyder thankfully didn't make it in a way that would appeal uncharacteristically to them. We'll see, I suppose. I don't care either way, a good movie is a good movie.
- MisterRik, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4I fear you are being a little naive there
- joshuawilde, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4Yes, absolutely ridiculous.
I enjoyed reading Watchmen, it was a good read, but at the end of it I was kind of left with a feeling of "that's it?". The ending was good, but the main storyline could easily have been twice as long.
Watchmen is without a doubt a great work of art, but... I really don't see how you could say that it rivals Lord of the Rings, or unequivocally claim that it is "the best graphic novel of all time". - Balath, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4I couldn't be happier if Watchmen is perfect to the novel, but ignored by the public. That kills the possibility for a sequel, gives me a great movie, and I don't have to hear quotes from it repeated until I can't stand to watch it ever again.
- KarateMedia, on 10/09/2008, -1/+5Article is full of ***** if only for getting its facts wrong or mangled.
1) It's already been stated that the Black Freighter is going to be released on DVD to coincide with the movie, then possibly interwoven into a later deluxe DVD version of Watchmen. Snyder may be "committed" to including it "at some point" -- but not in the theatrical release, so it won't have *any* effect on how the general public perceives this film.
2) "The casting of the accomplished actors [...] Akerman [...] excited comic and film geeks alike." Really? Because all I remember hearing (and thinking) is "they've cast the odd Jesus slut from Harold & Kumar as Silk Spectre?!"
Other than that, the opinions are fairly half-baked. People don't have to come into the movie with a deep knowledge of Vietnam or Nixon - they just need to know a big blue guy helped us win an unwinnable war and there's a President in the White House who was hated but is now so loved that he's been allowed to stay in longer. Won't take much to get that across...
Jesus ***** Christ! I would type more, but apparently this comment box is having a ***** seizure! WTF??? I can barely see what I'm typing! - 22pages, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4yeah, of all the stories which use that kind of an ending (not sure what will happen next), it is one of the best
- chevrongolf, on 10/09/2008, -1/+5Some of Moore's stuff has failed in the theater...other's have been great successes. I'm looking forward to seeing this in the theater. I'm watching it for sure.
