Will 3-D Sportscasting Save the Movie Theater?

wired.com — Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban gave a presentation to the FCC about the future of digital media, and his number one point -- obviously a little self-serving, but it wouldn't be Cuban if it wasn't -- was that people will be able to go to a movie theater and watch a major sporting event in 3-D.

  • duk0r, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2That or the movie theaters need to be more creative when it comes to getting customers in the door.
    Two words: "Alamo Drafthouse" We have them here in Austin, TX. You can check them out here: http://www.drafthouse.com/
    They make going to the movies kick ass for several reasons:
    1) They have themes for the movie they are showing, mostly for opening night. (e.g. When I saw Dodge ball there after the movie they had a dodge ball game setup in the parking lot. Indiana Jones - there were snake wranglers before the movie started, very cool!)
    2) No boring ads while you are waiting for the movie to start. (e.g. When I saw Hancock they were showing old Will Smith music videos and behind the scenes cuts from his other movies.)
    3) Food and BEER! - That's right, dinner and a movie in one sitting! The row in front of you is a table instead of a row of seats. Where you can order food (Burgers, salads, etc..) or a glass of beer or can just order some popcorn and candy.
    4) NO tolerance for noisy kids or people. - I have never been to a showing at the Alamo where I had a problem with loud people or kids, ever!
