- PlanBeast, on 06/29/2009, -10/+105Terminator 2, Aliens, Lord of the rings were all well received big budget enjoyable action films. You can have big budget action and a good solid plot but people seem to argue that these are mutually exclusive to defend the ***** Mr Bay produces.

-- Henry Mencken - denizen42, on 06/29/2009, -7/+82Fun shouldn't have to occur at the expense of one's intelligence.
- TheRedeemer, on 06/29/2009, -10/+74As Roger Ebert said, when has it become acceptable to lower our standards for movies? "Oh, just turn your brain off and enjoy!" This is not just Michael Bay's fault. It's the fault of people who choose to watch crap. And that makes no ***** sense. Shame on you America. Now Michael Bay will get to make a 3rd movie. Transformers 3: ***** You All.
- havokdu, on 06/29/2009, -44/+106Michael Bay is correct. Most critics have forgotten how to have fun and enjoy a movie. But the reviews have more to do with the fact that the more successful a director becomes, the more critics resent it. If you notice, the reviews are very personal and have very little to do with the movie itself. This is especially true when a movie is obviously meant to please audiences and not critics. Regardless, it is the audience whose voice that matters. Clearly Michael bay has demonstrated he knows what he is doing and audiences love his films. I would take the audience over the critics any day.
- tjsullivan1, on 06/29/2009, -8/+54Yes, but then you have audience members like me, fans of the first Transformers who hated the sequel. What these numbers don't take into account are the people like me, who spent $11 to see this on opening night and HATED it. Way too much comic relief, an underdeveloped plot and not enough Megan Fox running in slow motion.
- asgardshill, on 06/29/2009, -12/+57Transformers 2 makes over $200 mil and Fox News has killer ratings. Both are signs that Idiocracy was set way too far ahead in the future.
- nmanguy, on 06/29/2009, -22/+65Hey, I liked it. I didn't expect to watch Slumdog Millionaire or Shawshank, I expected GIANT ROBOTS THAT TRANSFORM INTO ***** TO KILL OTHER ROBOTS (RIP BILLY MAYS). If you went in expecting a masterpiece of our time, you'd hate it. If you went in hoping to watch 150 minutes of robot-explodey, it is awesome.
- c010rb1indusa, on 06/29/2009, -14/+54Megan Fox+Giant GCI transformers will always overshadow critics.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+41Because Mike Judge was right about everything except the timeline for America's descent into idiocracy.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -3/+33Because really, at the core of it all - we're idiots.
- SeekerDarksteel, on 06/29/2009, -3/+33And I would take the critics over the audience any day.
I'm not saying that people who prefer artistic merit to gratuitous explosions and overrated women are "superior", but you fall into exactly the same trap you accuse them of falling into when you criticize them for not being able to "have fun and enjoy a movie."
Let the people who like guns and boobies enjoy their movies with guns and boobies. Let the people who like "smart" movies enjoy "smart" movies. But it's absolutely pointless to claim that one group or the other is "right" or that their opinion "matters" while the other's doesn't. - pingpants, on 06/29/2009, -3/+32Megan Fox : A silver bullet through the heart of critical thinking
- BossKey, on 06/29/2009, -2/+24"Most critics have forgotten how to have fun and enjoy a movie."
No, I've seen lots of reviews of fun movies critics liked. People who make the claim above, smack of anti-intellectualism. Critics have not forgotten to have fun. Critics LOVED Star Trek. They loved it! They thought it was fun AND well-done, thereby proving that "critics can't have fun" is false.
Critics are merely saying, can't we have fun and have a good movie? - Hetman, on 06/29/2009, -5/+24I will probably go see it. However if my friends that are liked the first transformer and are huge transformers fan were dissapointed. The reason they did not like it was because of the fight scenes. They just said they were disorganized and not very entertaining. They did not even talk about the plot.
- cnot3, on 06/29/2009, -10/+28That could easily be accomplished by hitting themselves in the head repeatedly with a brick until their IQ reaches that of your average prepubescent Transformers fanboy, whose biggest decision in life is whether to masturbate to the image of Megan Fox or Optimus Prime.
- scriptcoder, on 06/29/2009, -1/+17Except awesome robots and action are not mutually exclusive with a strong narrative, compelling characters that we love and remember, and an awesome STORY.
- InvincibleQ, on 06/29/2009, -1/+16Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho has my vote in next elections!
- RoccoMcTaco, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14This is the problem I have: "Let the people who like guns and boobies enjoy their movies with guns and boobies. Let the people who like "smart" movies enjoy "smart" movies."
It's this common mentality that one person can't enjoy both, like you're either an idiot or an art snob.
I guess that makes me an idiot art snob. - ceredron, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14Honestly, I'm just sad that Michael Bay decided to make the Transformers into big dumb machines with typecast personalities. Remember how Transformers used to be plot driven by the struggles and drama between Transformers (f.e. Beast Wars)? Well, that's what I wanted out of a Transformers movie, but instead we get this alternate take of reality where life goes on and Transformers just happen to exist to blow a lot of ***** up to a really loud soundtrack.
That's the problem I had with the movie. Less about Transformers, more about explosions, lost potential in great personalities all just swept aside for Hollywood. :( - bfogarty27, on 06/29/2009, -2/+15doesnt mean it needs lame retarded humor stuck throughout it
and if you could see the robots fighting that would be nice - g0thm0g, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13Bay is adept at selecting movie projects he knows a lot of people will buy tickets to see because the subject matter appeals to a wide audience, not because the movies he ultimately makes about the subject matter are particularly good.
- MFoody, on 06/29/2009, -1/+13It had a simple plot but it wasn't particularly stupid. It was coherent, relatable, and in it's time somewhat novel. It had interesting characters even if some where a little bit cliche. Transformers had a boring, mostly nonsensical plot and characters that were beyond one dimensional.
- MFoody, on 06/29/2009, -8/+20Michael Bay is wrong. Most critics are just smarter than average and smart people are less likely to be enamored by a plotless, characterless, soulless update of a 25 year old serialized toy commercial. The first transformers was stupid and boring. The reason for the success of transformers 2 is simple. Smart people have very different tastes in movies from one another. They don't agree on which movies are best. Stupid people love explosions.
- darkchild82, on 06/29/2009, -1/+12GCI = Generated Computer Imagery?
- Browzer, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9When you are a critic and you see everything, your standards become much higher. I was never a critic, but in college, I saw a *ton* of movies. I sometimes went to the cinema 5 times in a weekend. My standards increased dramatically. The stupid action movies that my friends liked just didn't do it for me anymore. Oh, I still liked action movies, but they really had to be unique or well made. That is what happens with critics. Plus, most people haven't seen many really great movies and don't know how satisfying they can be. As a result, they eat up garbage like Transformers.
- SpinningHead, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10You must be new to our country. Welcome.
- DEadVocateILS, on 06/29/2009, -3/+11Seriously, no B.S.
I saw it in IMAX. The picture was darker that I expected, kind of fuzzy if you will too. The sounds were suppressed. The close ups of some of the fight scenes were just too close, who was winning? ...and the initial, "I Love You" scene made me so dizzy I had to look down, so I didn't puke from the visual effects of the swirling camera.
All this, and I grew up on Transformers ! - amcnair, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.
Brad Bird (from Ratatouille) - dalittle, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9If Transformers 2 had any actual competition I might agree, but it did not. It sucked, but there was nothing else new to see.
- Hetman, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Edit: Just ignore my second sentence.
- iamnobody8614, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Sounds like the first one...
- RedHawk911, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9But there is still alot of people who liked the first and also this one... But for some reason, it feels like this movie is being hated because that is the new cool internet trend. I'm not saying that you're one of them but there sure is a lot of those people.
- Bulletbillx, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7What about people who can enjoy both smart movies and popcorn movies?
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -3/+10I just hated the comedy that was directed to a 12 year old boy audience. But I have to admit, when the SR-71 turned into a giant freaking robot, I jizzed a little. (In my pants)
- i4ybrid, on 06/29/2009, -2/+91. Take a nostalgic brand of cartoons and turn it into an explosionfest
2. Hire Megan Fox
3. ????
4. Profit - CLAPYRHANDS, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8I chose to go see it because I enjoyed the first one, and was just plain curious about this one. A decision I regret to this very day....
- JungDigg, on 06/29/2009, -3/+9Sorry to hear about your small brain.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8Just because your mom tells you that you are smart, doesn't mean it's true.
- damack, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6It's not hard making a flashy movie with a big budget but making a great movie that has moments that stay with you for years is the real challenge.
There are some fantastic movies out there in the vein of The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption and the likes of Alien that have certain scenes or themes that just stay with you for years but that is the essence and art of movie making. - sedatedbylife, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Normally when movies are good people go to see them a second or third time. Or recommend them to their friends. From what I've been hearing it sounds like a lot of people went to go see it when it first came out, thought it was crap and everyone else went to see it because it couldn't have been that bad.
There are plenty of movies you can watch that have a plot and are humorous that are also visibly dazzling. - shanesemler, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6There is a dearth of sci-fi films at the moment. All we've had lately is Star Trek and Moon (which is limited release) Plus alot of people in the late 20's and 30's grew up with Transformers. Personally, I think Bay's films are stupid but, yeah. Apparently alot of people don't care how stupid a movie is. Though with these sales figures you'd think Megan Fox was naked throughout most of the movie.
- pocketjacks, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Internet tough guy calling a mute cancer patient a bitch. Classy.
- mandraque, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6Most people went to see it cause it was a big thing, kinda like how you should get an ipod to fit-in. Most of my friends went to see it opening night, the majority though it was absolute garbage, but a few friends that dont know who michael bay is though it was ***** amazing. I didnt see it because im not giving a cent to a hack like michael bay. He doesnt look for interesting movies to make, he looks for movies were he can have the best explosions and will sell the most.
- arkwald, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7It was very flashy, almost seizure inducing-like so. Also a lot of the fight sequences happened so fast that it was hard to tell who was who other then big gray robots fighting each other. In addition there was a lot of Megan Fox combined with Bay-esque motion going on. Finally the display of military hardware reminded me more of a recruiting commercial then anything else.
All that aside though, it presented a very simple good/evil with good winning out even over death. Which of course given the large masses of passively Christian people throughout the country no wonder why it did well. In short it was simple, fun, and touched on enough social concepts not to be unfamiliar. - JungDigg, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Your brain has an off switch?
- sgroach, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5So you hated Iron Man, Up, TDK, Spiderman 1 and 2, all three LOTR.
Your missing out on alot of movies. - DarkBlueAnt, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7I asked my easily influenced friend how he liked it. He said "I don't know... I guess it had too many robots and too many explosions"
Now I have to see it. -
