Not twice, but thrice did she break the law.
First was the intial drunk driving incident. She was then caught twice violating the probation by driving on the suspended license.
Maybe the first time is forgiveable. I'm sure many people here have driven when they've had a little bit more than they should.
Maybe the first violation of the probation was forgiveable if she somehow truly believed her license wasn't suspended (as was orignally claimed).
The third time is simply flauting the law and deserves a reprimand. - seanc6610, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4somebody forgot obviously forgot to put "/sarcasm" at the bottom of their post

- mrballcb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I am a bit suprised, not by Paris, but by the lack of foresight on the part of the Sherrif. He completely missed the opportunity of a lifetime -- he could have turned this into a massive campaign to address jail overcrowding. Most people who get thrown into county typically serve about 10% of their sentence and then get released due to overcrowding. If she had been exposed to the normal numbers game (instead of grandpappy's numbers checkbook), she probably would have been released after 6 or 7 days. *THEN* he could have said "Look at what I have to do because of overcrowding. I have to treat her the same as everybody else and I release *THEM* after only 10% of their service." Afterwards he just stands in the back of the room and watch the money fly in for him to build more jails, hire more deputies, etc. He's also kind of foolish for not expecting this kind of backlash from an obviously bought justice event.

She's being compared to rapists and child molestors at this point. Which amuses me given that what she went to the klink for is a glorified traffic offense. Everyone is just as happy to see a rich person go down for any reason whatsoever.
On a side note in the article it states that the sherrif failed to report remarks made by Mel Gibson. Why should he? Is the law that he should call the press immediately when a rich or powerful person is doing something horrible?
I really wish this would all go away. Its all I hear about. It feels good to write this so I dont have to bear these thoughts in silence anymore. Thanks. hmmmm vodka.- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -30/+3Yeah, if we threw everyone in jail for driving on a suspended license, there would be millions upon millions more Americans rotting in jail than there already are. The prison system is improperly used as it is, we don't have any need to start putting the hammer down on misdemeanor offenders.
@cmuwriter
1.5 million people get busted for DUI every year. I agree there should be harsh punishments, but you simply cannot lock all of them away in a free society. - dcmjzero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41glorified traffic offense? she was driving drunk. if you are driving drunk, then your car is considered a deadly weapon, and you no longer get the chance to use it. she was caught driving twice after that. just replace "car" with "gun" when you think about it. if a person convicted of shooting a gun drunk in public was caught with a gun twice afterwards, then they would be in jail. period.
- Moocat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30She was getting far less actually. Most non-violent offenses get cut in half during the serving period regardless of what most people would like you to believe. She however, didn't barely serve three days out of what was supposed to be a 45 day sentence. An easy let off would have been a week or two, not three days. Most people with similar records probably would have served 20 days or so.
As for the sheriff's report, the press does not get called on every arrest made, they are however required by law to record their duties and arrests for the day and anyone who wants can visit city hall and request a police blotter for the day. The fact he didn't record it means he was skirting the law himself.
Myself? I really could care less 99% of the time about celebrities in general, I don't watch MTV or any of that crap, but when someone ***** themselves out of a sentence when they are clearly unrepentant, that kinda pisses me off. Especially when it's found out they bought themselves out, the more people that get caught doing this (and then sent back) the better IMHO. As for DWI offenses, it's a whole different topic but as an addition to my comments, driving drunk is pretty ***** dangerous and the lady needs to be taught a lesson that only a few days in real life can teach you. - unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1well apparently the article said it was a "drink-driving" case that got her into jail
- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4From the NYT: “It backfired against her because she’s a celebrity. She got a harsher sentence because she was a celebrity. And then when her lawyer found a way out of jail, there was too much public attention for it to sit well with the court.” -Laurie Levenson, a law professor at Loyola Law School Los Angeles
Hmm, who to believe? Moocat with 14 diggs or a law professor? Tough call. - Cenobite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Paris supporters keep pounding on the point that she's being treated harshly and they thus view her as some kind of tragically diseased folk heroine. Let's not forget the fact that, whatever time she's doing, she brought it on herself; it's not like the Gestapo busted her door down and dragged her to prison innocently, she broke the ***** law! More than once!
Serving a few weeks for a crime she DID commit doesn't make her Ruben Carter. Get off it, already. - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1"Paris supporters"
See, now you are trying to make this into a polarized "us and them" battle where people pick teams and choose hills to die on. So I suppose the law prof. I quoted is just a "paris supporter" and therefore his educated opinion doesn't matter? This is simply about punishments being related to the severity of the crime. Not all crimes are punished by jail time.

And seeing everyone take enjoyment out of someone being punished like this... makes me sick... I'm embarrassed to be human when people act like this... No I don't give a ***** about Paris, but I don't approve of all the mindless bashing everyone is partaking in. The fact that she's going to jail for a victimless crime only makes this more wrong... Justice is never just in this day and age, it's all just backwards mob punishments...
I don't care how many times she drove on a suspended license thats not warrant of jail time... and neither is driving with some alcohol in her system... Both of those are only worth large fines meant as deterrents (more for her since she's rich)... Only if she had hurt someone else other than her self... would jail time then be a fitting punishment.
I'll say it again, victimless crimes NEVER deserve jail time. There are better ways to deal with that, and better, more humane deterrents...- dracflamloc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46If a person runs outside into a busy intersection and starts randomly shooting guns like crazy, but by some luck of chance doesn't hit anyone would you say he doesn't deserve jail time?

- jefffm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25tell me again what's victimless about drunk-driving?
- sonaboy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29@NikoKun
shut up, hippy.
drunk driving is illegal and examples have to be made. people who aren't rich serve their time when they perform the same infractions. she thought she could play the system and she lost. good.
i hope your hackey sack goes down the sewer. - mcduckov, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1This is where hewing to a a logical construct like "Force" leaves you spouting really stupid *****. Logical constructs don't work in reality. Capitalism, marxism, communism. etc etc etc (all the isms) work fantastically well as logical constructs. However once you start parsing the construct out into reality it all falls apart. Libertarianism is no exception and the concept of "Force" is a great example. In theory the world would be a great place if force was only used in reaction to force. In practice it is as unworkable as any other ism.
- DJPhoenix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Just because there was no "victim" does not mean it's a victimless crime. The mere chance that there could have been a victim disqualifies this from the title "victimless crime."
Furthermore, your point about a fine being a deterrent is precisely why jail time is a better option in this case. A fine isn't a deterrent for people like her. She has money to burn. A large fine that would be a massive blow to any of us amounts to slightly less than a slap on the wrist for her. It also continues to do nothing more than show her that she can get away with whatever she wants because she's got the money to pay her way out of it. Then she continues to same pattern of behavior until there really is a victim. - Enroth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Officer: I’m sorry, your son is was involved in an accident, paramedics tried to revive him at the scene but failed
(Insert dramatic crying scene, I’m not a writer)
A bit later
Mother: How did he die?
Officer: he was hit by a drunk driver, you may know her Paris Hilton
Mother: Wasn’t she brought up on drink driving charges last year, why wasn’t she removed from the road then
Officer: .....She, umm, didn’t hurt anyone....
Yeh this looks like a good system
- dracflamloc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46If a person runs outside into a busy intersection and starts randomly shooting guns like crazy, but by some luck of chance doesn't hit anyone would you say he doesn't deserve jail time?
- Synthos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16/popcorn
- xTRUMANx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Wow, this article rocks. I was laughing all the way through.
"....she didn't want to use the toilet....She was absolutely terrified that one of the guards or staffers would get her with the cellphone cam and it would wind up on the Internet,"
Like we haven't seen all there is to see already.
"She was being held in a room by herself with a glass door guarded at all times and her psychiatrist spend all day Sunday with her, the report said."
They should allow people to come and watch her. It'll be like a zoo. Buy a ticket, watch her cry, eat, take a dump. Take photos but don't feed the animal.
"Hilton, who was dragged sobbing back to jail,"
I don't know why, I don't care that she's in jail and don't feel strongly either way if she's given special treatment or not, but the image of her being dragged while sobbing makes me happy.
"Hilton apparently broke down, wailing "mum, mum, mum", as the judge ordered her back to prison saying "the order is final and forthwith.""
One of those moments I wish I witnessed personally. - jdmCrush, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Crap! I've lost track. Is she in jail right now, or isn't she? Actually, I don't care
/Reads up on WWDC (oohhh shiny!) - TDLA, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3..... and in other news, the sun rose from the east this morning........
- BobMysterioso, on 10/11/2007, -22/+0You diggtards.
It is not illegal to donate to a campaign. He gave money when? Oh, before the arrest. It must have been pre-emptive money to buy off the sheriff incase something happened.
Please look at things in a different light. $1,000 is nothing. Its absolutely no money to these people. Paris, et al spends that much and more on drinks and food for each bar they go to in a night.
For the record. I believe Paris is getting more than the avg Joe would. Her 45 day -> 23 day sentence conversion is par for the course. And it is routinely common for non violent offenders to serve 10% of a sentence and be released due to overcrowding.- toconnor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I was with you until "For the record."
- brainboy77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2tsk-tsk. When will people realize that using the term "diggtard" will get your comment dugg down for sure?!!!
- Machuse, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1This is inaccurate.
She was released because the California's jail system is overcrowded. It is customary for offenders with her crime to be released early in the state of California.
(source: The sheriff who released her public statement and subsequent commentary by news anchors)
The only thing that happened - is because people worry more about what Paris Hilton is doing, than what they are doing. The judge unfairly gave her special treatment b/c he personally didnt like her or thought the way most of you think - and placed her back in jail.
Not to mention most of you would be up in arms if this happened to you. Released by the sheriff like is customary just to have the judge place you back in......I think we would see digg articles pleading for your release. Have some sense about yourselves and some sort of empathy for what other people are going through...even if deep down inside you wish you were her.- jmontes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The over-crowding angle is crap. You think that special area reserved for celebrities and rich people is over-crowded? No way. The sheriff started off with mentioning over-crowding to explain why the early release program exists in the first place. His application of that program to Paris is suspect at best.
I don't believe the judge acted wrongly. Sure, if an average Joe drove under the same conditions he might get off easier, but that is because for the rest of us losing the right to drive is life-affecting and difficult to comply with. But why in the world did Paris have to drive at all? She can easily afford to pay people to drive her around 24/7. Her driving anyway demonstrated an utter lack of respect for the law, and is undoubtedly the reason for her harsher punishment.

- effedup, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3I just assumed she gave out a couple blow jobs to the sheriff which influenced her situation..
- WriterY, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2"Why did the sheriff release Paris Hilton?"
Because he's a corrupt so and so and there is absolutely no room for corruption anywhere... - feenikz4180, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6"I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things, like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world."
Yeh..... like she gives a damn. - SomaSynth, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Remember kids, it's not bribery if you set up an election campaign.
- orukabir, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Buried since i dont give a ***** if she goes to jail or not.
I'm not sure why so many others do. - fozzie, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Hey Paris: Less QQ more PEW PEW!
- mcduckov, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6AHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!! She didn't eat because she didn't want to poop or pee on a metal toilet....hahahahahahahahah....
Oh man that is rich. However, people go on hunger strikes all the time and they are not released because of that. If 5 days is about average for people with this kind of violation then let her go. However, releasing for "medical reasons" is not appropriate in really any case I can think of.- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I agree the reason she didnt want to go to the bathroom is because jails are nasty. But it is no different that what any other prisoner has to do. I find it funny as hell.
- Onetrack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Instead of jail they should make her join the reserves..
A little iraq time would do her good- feenikz4180, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8i second that motion
since she said it herself;
"I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things, like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world."
Albeit she doesn't give a damn about Iraq. - swavalier711, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12give her a gun, are you crazy? The friendly fire....
- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I would give her a rope in hopes that she will end her life in the next 18 days.
- t4ll3y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I doubt she can tie her shoes, much less a proper noose.
- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1lol I agree.
- feenikz4180, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8i second that motion
- radner, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9Money Donated from Hilton Family for Election - $5,000
Annual Salary after winning election - $50,000-100,000
Receiving BJ from Paris in exchange for early release, only to be sent back - priceless.
There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's Paris' lips. - nicksauce, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3"Hilton, who was dragged sobbing back to jail, said being in prison was the hardest thing she had ever done... 'Being in jail is by far the hardest thing I have ever done' she said."
Redundant much? - SzaszMan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I honestly don't think that jail really is helpful for people like Lindsay Lohan or Robert Downey Jr.... but Paris Hilton is an exception. I actually think she might be improved by a few weeks in the pokey.
- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3"She didn't eat or drink a single thing for three days because she didn't want to use the toilet," a source also told the New York Daily News, adding that Hilton suffered from claustrophobia and hyperventilation.
1. Im sorry but jails are supposed to be claustrophobia. That is how they are designed.
"She was absolutely terrified that one of the guards or staffers would get her with the cellphone cam and it would wind up on the Internet," a source identified as a Hilton insider told the newspaper.
I would rather see her crying and trying to eat prison food than see her vagina. Anyone with an internet connection can get that anyways.- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Wow, we all of a sudden care about the abuses that go on in prison.
Why can't we address these concerns when a poor person, with only an over worked public defender to fail to keep them out of jail, ends up getting raped? So it's only wealthy public figures who might be terrified by being in a tiny room with bars, no hygiene and no guarantees that someone won't kill you?
Paris getting a video on the internet is the least of her problems. - Skooma714, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1So? I was hyper ventilating this morning from a caffeine overdose. The hell with her.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Wow, we all of a sudden care about the abuses that go on in prison.
- my10cent, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Because he is a pushover and she probably gave him a .........
- SnapETom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4That ***** piece of ***** should be recalled.
