answer
Because its ***** AWESOME.. - PimpinOnWelfare, on 09/07/2008, -3/+55Dark Knight = The iceberg
- ZebZ, on 09/07/2008, -9/+44Except, given increases in prices, The Dark Knight would have to go up to over $900M to sell as many tickets as Titanic sold.
- PHJames88, on 09/07/2008, -1/+35How about a magic trick? I'm going to make this ship disappear!

Titanic earned 900 Billion domestically in today's ticket prices and is only ranked 6th of all time. The Dark Knight is only in 29th place. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+13900... BILLION dollars!
- cme884, on 09/07/2008, -1/+11titanic was a ***** brilliant movie, technically speaking. If you're a fan of movies, you should pick it up sometime. nevermind the fact that it made so much money because of a certain demographic; TDK was targeted at young males but it wouldn't be nearly as popular if other folks didn't go see it.
- psion01, on 09/07/2008, -1/+10Because it was fun to watch Jack freeze to death and sink into the neptunian abyss.
Well ... that was my favorite part, but then I'm a sucker for happy endings. - DemonSpawn77, on 09/07/2008, -2/+10*****, can Batman really beat a whole ship?

*Us as in the Royal We. I hate Bloggers that refer to themselves as We and Us. - jax0047, on 09/07/2008, -1/+7It won't beat Titanic because it wasn't that good. Dark Knight tried too hard to have the edge of a dark rated R movie but stay within the PG-13 rating. Being PG-13 makes the film more lucrative but kept it from greatness. Titanic was a different type of movie and didn't need an R rating so it wasn't really held back by this fact. Also, no one's taking into account that these box office records ignore inflation which, if put into the equation, means Dark Knight isn't even close.
That having been said, Titanic sucked. It was OK but not great by any means. Same as Dark Knight. 2001: A Space Odyssey will never touch these movies, or Star Wars, or Jaws, or Jurrassic Park, in the Box Office. Does that make it not as good? No. Who cares who makes the most money, only the studio not the consumer. - HappyScrappy, on 09/07/2008, -2/+8Comparisons are pointless without adjusting for inflation anyway. If you don't do so, then "Disaster Movie" grosses more than "Gone With the Wind".
Even adjusting for inflation gives a big advantage to newer movies anyway because of the increase in population. Of course when there are more people in the market (world, country, you pick), you can sell more tickets. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6McDonalds makes more hamburgers every year than everyone, doesn't mean it's the best.
- Thousand, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Titanic was about the ship as much as Digg is a meeting place for jet-setting millionaire playboys.

- Peck3277, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5It only appealed to guys cause it had ***** in it. Put ***** in TDK and you have the best movie ever made. Dammit put ***** in any movie and it's awesome. Actually ***** this i'm going looking for some *****
- sexybobo, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5until you realize shrek 2 is in 30th with only 4 million less.
- Grolsch, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Hmm... Dark Knight was badass movie but with all this hype surrounding it I would have to say its still overrated.
- DeFex, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Who cares. Its just a movie.
and if by "beat" you mean "outsell" is that good?
taste the worlds most popular hamburger vs a good one.
I know its nice to see what you like sell more. but only up to a point. then it is called "selling out" - MScrip, on 09/07/2008, -3/+8Not to burst your bubble... but Titanic had more of a universal appeal, being both a chick flick and couple's movie.
- Shuk, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4People don't realize that the Titanic is untouchable because of it's widespread appeal and pure endurance in theatres. It was one of those movies which 'everyone just saw'. Remember, it doesn't matter how badly people want to see the movie, all it matters is how many people pay the ticket price.
In ticket sales, 1 million nerds seeing an awesome movie 5 times = 5 million people going 'meh' how bad can it be, I'll see it once. So it doesn't matter how "awesome" the movie is, it's all about demographics. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Not
Gonna
Happen - antdude, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5And that's why you don't have a chick. :P
- Barackalypse, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Re-releases shouldn't count towards the original box office take and by that same token, they could just as easily re-release Titanic.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Adjusted for inflation (or counting the number of tickets sold) Dark Knight is not even on the list of the top 20, hell Grease beats it from that perspective.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm - OswaldKenobi, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5The Dark Knight will not surpass Titanic as the highest domestic grossing movie of all time for one simple reason. It doesn't have the legs to stay in theaters for 9 months while still filling seats. But take solace, comic book fanatics, no other movie will surpass Titanic either. Well, at least not until ticket prices reach the $20-30 range.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Because it was a good movie. I'm sick of all this 'macho' diggers criticizing the movie. It was a girlie movie, maybe, it wasn't to me, but it was good and if you have any objectivity you should acknowledge that. Now digg me down.
- BrokenCircle, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I am going to say it now; Terminator 4 will be a flop.
- leif77, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Titanic came out in a time where you had to wait 6 months to a year for a movie to come out on dvd. The Dark Knight dvd rip is already on torrents, and the movie will probably be released around christmas time. People who saw titanic and liked it enough to want to see it again had to either wait a year or go to the theatre again.
- DrSnugglebunny, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Edit--Awww ***** nevermind, just saw someone made the pedantic point I was going to make so I must replace it with something else...
Woozle wuzzle? - VinnieDaMac, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a hilarious movie. Highly recommend if you like those types of movies.
- modsuperstar, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I have to agree with you there. Titanic appealed to a different demographic entirely then TDK. Titanic did so well because not only was it a decent romance story, it had good action sequences and pretty awesome special effects. And it was enjoyable even though everyone knew how it would end. I know it's pretty uncool nowadays to like Titanic, but I really think it does stands up pretty well to the test of time. I have a tough time believing TDK will stand the test of time given how badly dated previous Batman films have become.
- Barackalypse, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3The same reason Hanna Montana and the Jonas brothers make so much money... stupid girls spending mommy and daddy's money.
- LoudMusic, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4I haven't seen either one so I wouldn't really know. Are they good?
- shawnanigans, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3You do know how inflation works right?
- whatever01, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3TDK was just a fantasty movie? The Titanic was a documentary? O RLY?
Both fantasies, but for different demographics (mostly...). - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -4/+7That's "universal" appeal? A movie for chicks and their weak-willed boyfriends?
- tbredofsin, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3You're stupid if you think some blood, gore, and a few f-bombs are what make a movie great.
- kenyan, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Way to kill the buzz....
Why so serious? - tbredofsin, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4As sappy, lame, and filled with idiotic dialogue as Titanic was, this criticism has always made me laugh. Don't you get it? The story wasn't ABOUT the Titanic. People watched because they wanted to find out what happened with 'ol Leo and Kate.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Yup, and I don't know which I'm more sick of.
- NotYourProdigy, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I think William Fichtner is going to be in the 3rd movie, and here's why:
Saw it again, I'm convinced. Not only does Joker not kill him, he says "Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stranger." And we're left with an injured Bank Manager who thought he was getting his head blown off. I've always liked Fichtner, and Chris Nolan's caster has a thing for fascinating presence; who would a knew Killian Murphy could be cool? -
