- AmnesiacJack, on 10/16/2008, -1/+31So really just the rantings of a fanboy who doesn't want to accept something different?
Oh...
Ok. - 560Benz, on 10/15/2008, -1/+18This didnt really convince me that Spirit would fail... It was more about differences of artistic perspective. did i miss something?
- mikbunn, on 10/16/2008, -3/+19There was a large cardboard ad for it in the theater; I thought it was Sin City 2 until I saw the preview. I liked Sin City, but really, is the film noir style with splashes of color all Miller knows how to do?
- deepthot42, on 10/15/2008, -2/+16Because it's Frank Miller's the Spirit... not Eisner's
- chadwalters23, on 10/16/2008, -7/+20This flick just looks so lame. Like, Howard the Duck lame.
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -2/+14Howard The Duck was one of the greatest movies of all time.
- Jack9, on 10/16/2008, -1/+12Since nobody read the comics (statistically), there's no reason to mention the comics. The movie preview I saw made it look like a half-porn star fighting an over the top black nazi surrounded by various hot horny superwomen. It's like a reverse barbarella and will do well.
- dezweber, on 10/16/2008, -0/+8Frank Miller didn't direct 300.
- IndustrialJones, on 10/16/2008, -1/+9The only thing Frank Miller had to do with 300 was doing the graphic novel.
- mikbunn, on 10/16/2008, -1/+7EDIT: film noir OR sepia
- CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -1/+7I've never read the comics and I've very interested in this movie.
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4No, and knowing Miller and his involvement in the movie I think it will rock.
- cresswga, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4This guy needs to cut back on the hater-ade. He's also seem to take every opportunity to tell everyone why Watchmen is going to fail too.
- petebot, on 10/16/2008, -2/+6Hey! I like Howard the Duck!
- VinnieDaMac, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Good thing I've never read the comics so I'll be free to enjoy the movie.
- Huangism, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4movies looks lame, this article is even more lame trying to prove something
- bishopknight, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3ya i agree. I want to like this movie but the trailers are not exciting me :(
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3It will fail because people will expect a Sin City or a 300, but Spirit is much more weirder... Like a movie about Naked Lunch meet Sin City...
I predict a "niche" success for that movie, but it won't shatter any mainstream records, and it won't touch Sin City by far.
I'll still go see it though. - inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3This guy is the epitome of the neck bearded comic snob - only he understands the deep intricacies and cultural relevance of his beloved comic, and anyone else who dares to reinterpret the work are doomed to failure.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Um, he's a comic book guy, so...yes!
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -1/+3The main reason I think the Spirit movie can only fail is that I'm a thirty something regular comic reader, the meat of the demographic they want to attract, and I have ZERO interest in going to see it. However, I am a bit self-centered.
- HouseofEl, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2You're not much of a comic book fan if you really believe that.
That being said, I'm not a fan of The Spirit. I have read it and I was underwhelmed. However I was able to respect the influences it had on future work. You say it's a dirty secret because you're describing yourself, not others.
So, don't go away angry. Just go away. - porkdanish, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1He has no "super-powers", he's a gun toting, bare-knuckle blue-collar crime fighter.
I think the not dying bit is some creative license on Frank Miller's part.
In the original comic, The Spirit is a detective who is thought to be dead and bad guys are sort of afraid of him because of this. - jonshipman, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1I thought the Spirit wasn't suppose to have powers?
But in the trailers I saw he's suppose to be unable to die or something? - elhaf, on 10/16/2008, -4/+5Why io9's prediction can only fail...
- Modulo, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Well obviously I'm using hyperbole but I do have a pupose for that..
"I have read it and I was underwhelmed. However I was able to respect the influences it had on future work."
That's what I'm talking about. Are you really respecting it because of the influences or are you respecting it because the comic reading elite agree that it is an important work and you don't want to not look elite? I'm genuinely wondering because I'm very interested in the idea of "important" works and how there can be sort of a hive mentality surrounding them where people sort of just toe the party line. - ProfessorSYM, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Even if it is, so what?
- gospe1337, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Didn't even have to read the article to know it would be true.
- HouseofEl, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1It will fail because Frank Miller is seriously over-hyped in the comic world and as of late, film. 300 was good because the overall story was still interesting. Miller didn't make up The Battle of Thermopylae, he just made it a comic book. A good looking comic book that Zach Snyder translated into a great looking and exciting film. Sin City was good because of the people involved and because it's the one thing that Miller tends to do well. Miller has always bee more miss than hit. His writing is often clunky and wordy. Keep in mind, when I say "wordy" I don't mean too much dialog. I equate it to how someone like's to hear themselves speak. Miller is the same with his writing. It comes down to Miller being ridiculously good when he's good and staggeringly bad when he's bad.
I can say one thing about him, he's never mediocre. - dafragsta, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Buried by insinuating Frank Miller will fail. He's not over-hyped. His work has been around for a long time and it's only now getting mainstream exposure because everything released based on his books has been amazing by most accounts. Sin City probably saved Robert Rodriguez's career and I'm saying that as a fan of Robert Rodriguez.
- vichussmith, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1This isn't going to be a failure. You think most people even know who Will Eisner is? Seriously? They're looking at it and seeing Frank Miler's name. They know nothing of the original Spirit.
Maybe it fails comics fans who know Will Eisner's The Spirit and want that translation. I've made my peace with this, and I'm actually glad that Frank Miller had his own vision for the movie, rather than trying to live up to Will Eisner's work.
Someone else can make Will Eisner's Spirit. This is Frank Miller's Spirit. - jonshipman, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Yeah. that's what I thought. Thanks!
- PedleZelnip, on 10/16/2008, -2/+2Seems to me 300 didn't look very "film noir" like.
- Modulo, on 10/16/2008, -1/+1Part of the way that things get to the front page is by having a lot of comments by people that come to the landing page and then write three paragraphs describing how little they care about the story. So essentially, I think the answer to your question "wtf is wrong with digg" is "you the ***** is wrong with digg".
- CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -1/+1Hahaha I just realized what I wrote . . . nine hours later.
- optimuskade, on 10/15/2008, -2/+1Well with the spirit coming out of a ladies mouth how can you lose?
- Modulo, on 10/16/2008, -4/+1People talk about The Spirit and the great contributions that Will Eisner has made to comic books, and many people have bought The Spirit comics and many people will say that they are fans of The Spirit. The dirty secret though is that no-one has ever read a single issue of The Spirit, and anyone that tells you that they have is a goddamn liar.
- austang, on 10/16/2008, -5/+2Omg all these comic'ees need to stfu. It's a movie not a comic. I suppose you'd prefer they make a B&W anime. Yeah, I'm sure that would rake in the $$.
If we based our opinions of all these latest comic origin movies that have come out, well none of them live up to their pre-history. Take the movie as it is, a movie, not a danm comic.
And how the hell did this make it to the front page, wtf is wrong with digg. - freddoo, on 10/16/2008, -6/+2Howard the duck lame is still much better than SW: phantom menace lame

What is Digg?
