- ProjectGSX, on 07/08/2009, -6/+75Funny, I thought the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was amazing from start to finish.
- kitsua, on 07/08/2009, -2/+69Last Crusade and Return of the King managed to keep the quality high and make great trilogies (Indy waited until 4 for the suck, saving it all up for one big turdpile). Alien3 is still enjoyable despite the studio wrangling. And ***** you all, Return of the Jedi is awesome.
Other than that, all so-called 'threequels' are uniformly bad. My personal worst is Batman Forever. That film shat all over the franchise way before Batman & Robin got it's grubby hands on it. Honorable mentions; X-Men 3 and Terminator 3, just because they both needlessly screwed over the legacy of their previous films through laziness and hackery.
Back to the Future 3 occupies some weird middle ground where it's not as good as the others but still feels like it's supposed to be there. - aftk2, on 07/08/2009, -2/+56Ahem - The Bourne Ultimatum? That's a hell of a movie, and the best of the three.
- fuzed, on 07/07/2009, -9/+56Dugg down for saying the original star wars trilogy was just...decent.
- elperegrino, on 07/08/2009, -1/+47smokin' hot latinas 3 was awesome
- duggtodeath, on 07/08/2009, -3/+48This is why part 3's always suck:
Anakin Skywalker: You are so... beautiful.
Padmé: It's only because I'm so in love.
Anakin Skywalker: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.
Padmé: So love has blinded you?
Anakin Skywalker: [laughs] Well, that's not exactly what I meant.
Padmé: But it's probably true. - danwallace, on 07/08/2009, -1/+41Surprisingly, Revenge of the Sith was the most watchable of the prequel trilogy. That being said, I still love all three of the original Star Wars movies, including Return of the Jedi.
- JediPilot, on 07/08/2009, -1/+40I hate the word "threequel". It's not like the second movie in a series is called a TWOquel.
- lolmax, on 07/08/2009, -4/+36Return of the Jedi. suck it
- JediPilot, on 07/08/2009, -1/+30***** hell. That ***** doesn't even make sense.
Related tidbit: In this scene, Natalie Portman isn't wearing any makeup. - Vindicoth, on 07/08/2009, -15/+39I thought that the Pirates of the Caribbean threequel wasnt so bad.
- L0NER, on 07/08/2009, -2/+22The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Awards:
Won 11 Oscars. Another 106 wins & 68 nominations
third of a trilogy. - passive, on 07/08/2009, -7/+275 words:
Die Hard
With a Vengeance
Better than the first, waaaay better than the second. - DarkBlueAnt, on 07/08/2009, -1/+19Return of the Jedi is classic!... Except for the ewok battle. I just close my eyes and pretend Han killed everyone himself.
- trafficlight, on 07/08/2009, -0/+17Yeah, but so was 4 through 17.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 07/08/2009, -0/+16I love your post and all... but that threequel had a pretty lame Part 1 and 2 as well... 2 was probably the worst of the bunch.
- Volath, on 07/08/2009, -0/+16They weren't defeated by ewoks. They simply served as a small distraction to the imperial forces while the rebels attacked them.
- wickensworth, on 07/08/2009, -0/+16This rule is bogus, 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up has no peers in its excellence
- Fleagleman, on 07/08/2009, -0/+15Return of the Jedi. That is all. (No, the prequels do NOT count so yes, this is a threequel).
Best of the 3, and I'll argue that to my grave (thank God for the movie "Clerks") - rondorondorondo, on 07/08/2009, -0/+14I'm willing to bet that Toy Story 3 will not suck.
- Sornos, on 07/07/2009, -5/+17The Empire was defeated by Ewoks.
- chuckDontSurf, on 07/08/2009, -0/+11Screw you, "Search for Spock" is really underrated. The last time I watched it I thought it was great. It only suffers in comparison to its predecessor.
- rocknog, on 07/08/2009, -1/+11Last Crusade and Return of the King both had the distinction, in my mind, of also being movies that were actually better than the seconds. Indy just isn't the same without Nazis, and don't get me wrong, I loved Two Towers, but it just felt less solid than the other two on account of being in the middle - no really solid beginning or end.
- jawbreaker4fs, on 07/08/2009, -0/+10There was nothing terrible about Superman III! Richard Pryor, sentient robot bent on world domination, and penny stealing scam... all awesome!
- stackolee, on 07/08/2009, -1/+11Goldfinger? Return of the King? Army of Darkness? Die Hard with a Vengeance? Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors? (yes I like that one)
- brakes4turtles, on 07/08/2009, -2/+10There are only 3 Star Wars movies and they are all fantastic.
- rocknog, on 07/08/2009, -0/+8One thing I'm surprised they didn't mention was the issue of not keeping everyone on board for all three movies. I mean, one of the best examples I can think of is the Batman movies, where they suddenly decided to fire Tim Burton because apparently his movies were too dark, and the studio wanted a campier, more kid-friendly Batman.
EDIT: Wait, no, never mind, they did cover the loss of the original talent, don't know why I missed it. - guyincognitoo, on 07/08/2009, -0/+8I thought they got better as they went, but no matter what order you put them in, they were all great.
- Psygnosis, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7"My love for you is like a river of loving, love."
http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=150 - Chinzon, on 07/08/2009, -2/+9Blasphemy! Yes, it was better than Die Hard 2: Die Harder, but no movie, NO movie is better than Die Hard.
Except maybe Top Gun. - mikbunn, on 07/08/2009, -4/+11Which finish was that? I loved all of the LotR movies, but Return of the King faded to black like five times.
I remember:
Frodo and Sam getting rescued by eagles,
Frodo waking up to a hobbit pillow fight,
Aragorn's coronation,
Sam getting some fine hobbit ass in the bar,
The ***** elf ship sailing away,
and Sam with his wife and kid.
I know the book is like that, too. Jackson even left the bit about Sharkey. - jboitnott, on 07/07/2009, -1/+8Dammit Superman 3 wasn't all that bad. Or at least I remember enjoying it when I saw it 25 years ago. Does that still count?
- chuckDontSurf, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7Yeah, but T3 closes the loophole on the time travel paradox. Technically, if the war was prevented, then none of the events in T1 and T2 would've happened. T3 fixes this. But I was thinking more about the fact that they didn't give it the typical happy ending; they actually ended it with the world getting nuked.
- kingcam, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6What is this list talking about RotJ is just as good as the first two in that trilogy.
- HTIZ, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6I hope you're saying that in agreement with fuzed.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6The reason why? Because they don't need to be good. You woo the fans with the first movie, and then you put together two slack-off half-assed sequels. The people who loved the first one will always go see the second one, and the third one will get a watch no matter how bad the second was just because people want closure.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5If that were the case, many more ewoks should have died... and a few should have been raped.
- lamiaconfitor, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5shadowspawn, he also threw the emperor down that vast well, or whatever that was.
- visualentropy, on 07/08/2009, -2/+7Blade 3 should be mentioned for sucking beyond belief and exemplifying this theory. (Vampire pomeranians, really?) Mission Impossble 3, however, should be mentioned for being an exception to this rule. (Thanks to J.J. Abrams.)
- kaevne, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5The Land Before Time III: The Time of the Great Giving pretty good!
- shadowspawn, on 07/08/2009, -1/+6Yea but luke did go onto the dark side there for a few moments when his dad called his sister a bitch.
Me and my wife think that anakin brought balance to the force by producing luke. In the end he was a neutral guy. - Worktruck, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5Pirates 3 sucked and 2 would have been great if it didn't end with to be continued. The problem with Pirates 3 was the main villain was basically an accountant how scary was that, and in Pirates 4 I bet they will somehow make Beckett a sympathetic character as well. I mean it's it's the same problem with the Star Wars Prequels if you try to humanize you villains too much it takes away from the story and it makes you wonder why they were even scary to begin with.
- rocknog, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5You mean the balls to completely destroy the premise of the second movie, that we make our own destiny? The balls to say "Hey look, the war will never truly be won, giving us an excuse to bombard us with endless pointless sequels?"
- roddack, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5I think pound for pound supremacy is the best of the three
- MWeather, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Oh yeah, what about American Ninja 3?
- oda1, on 07/08/2009, -1/+5The Exorcist 3 starring George C. Scott was pretty good.
- mwalker05, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4so much goes on in the 3rd book that they could have split it into 2 separate 3 hour movies. at least then we could've seen saruman take over the shire. so many story arches were rapping up that there wasnt really a good place to end it.
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4No, that's the jar, I'm talking about the tray
- chuckDontSurf, on 07/08/2009, -4/+8Call me crazy, but I kinda liked Terminator 3. I appreciate that they had the balls to give it the ending they did.
- rocknog, on 07/08/2009, -2/+6Oh, oh God no. The 2nd almost got interesting, but suddenly they ended with "to be continued" and it pissed me off so much.
