- ComeOutSwingin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+63That's pretty cool. Looks like I should use Rotten Tomatoes.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34Does anyone else find the description amazingly ironic?
"Don't know who to trust? Here, I'll tell you..." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23Now that EVERYTHING gets at least a 7 on IMDB, that site has gone to *****. Good to have somewhere new to go and get a real review.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+25This is pretty much worthless. They have data on only three critics. Their movie choices also seem extremely random, and seem to only cover genres that would appeal to young, male geeks.
A nice attempt, but this thing needs a ton of work before it can approach being useful in any way. - omatsei, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Clearly sneezyx isn't my best match...
- MattMcConaughey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17But which movie reviewer review site should you trust?
- nostaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Not exactly very helpful, though it does have potential if there were a larger number of reviewers.
Rotten Tomatoes : 85%
James Bernadelli : 84%
Peter Travers : 81%
Roger Ebert : 80% - IbnDigg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11The filthy critic: "Pirates of the Caribbean: No End in Sight is one long-ass movie. I mean, holy ***** ***** on a milkbone, what a overblown, bloviated pile of *****."
hear hear - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Listening to friends' opinions has burned me more times than reading several reviews and averaging them. Rotten Tomatoes does it right.
- cbasst, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14@sneezyx
no. The Pianist was awesome.
You are just a bitch. - noisician, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7he liked the movie?
- TigerX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Meh... Star ratings aren't completely reliable... Probably best to actually read the reviews if you actually care what the critics have to say... ;-)
- elev, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I use critics like I use my friends for movie reviews. If they say it is good I'll probably go see it. But, if I want to see it and they say it is no good, I'll see it anyway.
Examples:
My friends said The Fountain was boring. I saw it and loved it.
My friends said 300 was awesome and saw it six times in the theater. I liked it, but I like The Gladiator more.
Does anyone else do this? - Dragon88, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9The answer: none of them. They all like the gay cowboy movie.
- grungegbunny, on 10/11/2007, -3/+885% Rotten Tomatoes
80% Roger Ebert - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4i wouldn't use IMDB for the actual rating, but sometimes I skim the user reviews there - it seems to be one of the first places you will find early reviews from normal people.
- ArtificialAnus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9
There's only one movie reviewer that anyone will ever need...
The Filthy Critic:
http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/
AA - diggan8, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4how about joblo.com?
- mrhahn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Why not just use metacritic?
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Rotten tomatoes is a good resource, but it's even better if you fine tune it. Look up some of your favorite and least favorite movies (especially ones where you go against the grain or mainstream opinion) - the critics that agree with you the most are the ones you should reference in the future. if you create a login account you can build your own list of favorite critics under "MYcritics".
- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Wait, rottentomatoes.com doesn't use a rating system like this site does. They use the percentage of movie reviewers that liked the chosen movie.
- clemsontigers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I gave 4 stars to every single movie...the results:
Roger Ebert : 85%
Peter Travers : 80%
James Bernadelli : 80%
Rotten Tomatoes : 76% - nogami, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It suggested James Berardinelli for me (although they didn't spell his name properly on the page), which is pretty accurate as I've been reading/using his reviews for years. I find his reviews are usually quite accurate (for me).
The other method I used years ago, was to find out what Pauline Kael said about a movie, and do the exact opposite of what she recommended. Again, almost perfect accuracy.
N. - evil-doer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3btw, this site got James Berardinelli's name wrong.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Next up, a site which tells you which site which tells you which review site is best, is best. And so on.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Maddox isn't on the list?
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=episode3 - Chubarama, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3My percentages were 88%, 86%, 86% and 85%. Compelling stuff, I'll be sure to ignore those guys who didn't get 88%.
- thegoldenavatar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You know, I put 4.5 stars on Hotel Rwanda (and twice before you ask) and on the compatibility screen in only listed it as a 4. Half-stars apparently don't work. Nice.
- hardcle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I tried this because I've been kind of lost for movie reviews since Roger Ebert's (88%) been ill. I hadn't heard of James Berardinelli before (89%) so I read some of his reviews, liked what I read, and now I have a great new source for film reviews. At least until Roger gets back to full strength (soon, hopefully)
- mattmollysdad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2would much rather have the individual reviewers gave us their top 20 films of different genres... and include why they were the best.
- Mirielle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3 * Rotten Tomatoes : 82%
* James Bernadelli : 82%
* Roger Ebert : 82%
* Peter Travers : 78%
Yes, very helpful. - jeremynicolas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Myfilms is similar and seems to do quite a good job at this. But, like mrhahn, I just use metacritic.
- simplejoe79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@elev
yeah same here......and i also think gladiator was much much better than 300..... - dclowd9901, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Another good way of knowing which reviews to trust is to go to metacritic.com, look at the overall score of the movie, and then find the reviews that are at or close to that number, and read those reviews. They're probably going to be the closest to what the movie's really like.
Personally, I love filmthreat.com. They seem to always be right on, and they're very casual and genuine in their delivery. - twodayslate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2 * Rotten Tomatoes : 82%
* James Bernadelli : 82%
* Roger Ebert : 77%
* Peter Travers : 77% - sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3no love for totally rad show?
- bjkrautk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+382% Ebert
Great concept; I just wish it had more reviewers included (e.g. Richard Roper). - alamandrax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Filthy's rating system. http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/rating.html
- terrya64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My favorite critic is Ebert, now I know why, he is my highest match 86%.
- phairphair, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Buried as lame.
Only 4 critics were used for the test with less than a 10% variance between them. My correlation was 89% on the high end and 81% on the low end. Does it make a difference if you agree with someone 7% more? - Hayes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was surprised to see 21 Grams as the first movie on the list. I thought it was relatively unknown. Definitely one of my favourites and I recommend you all check it out if you haven't.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i forgive him
- krayyy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1where's a.o. scott (i can loath and even like him) and the rest of the nytimes folks.
- dierien2001, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Agreed The Filthy Critic is the greatest movie reviewer of all time!!
He tells the truth, isnt playing up to the movie companies or anyone else for that matter!!
Filthy for President!! - anvilon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I miss moviecritic.com - you rated movies and it made recommendations. It was remarkably accurate, but disappeared shortly after the bubble burst a few years ago. Probably got gobbled up by some other organization, but I've never come across a matching scheme that was as accurate as they were.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dugg because Metacritic is a great resource... I generally like to use the IMDB, and use the link to external reviews for each film- it is a quick way to get many points of view from diverse sources.
- alamandrax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1my favorite review of all time is the one he did for Glitter. Man that was one awesome movie and equally awesome review. http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/glitter.html
the reason i did end up watching "y tu mama tambien" was because of filthy. i've loved him for that since. - hardcle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Have you tried movielens? I've rated almost 1200 movies there and it's very accurate for me.
http://movielens.umn.edu/main - cresswga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think everyone's percentages come out nearly the same so the important thing is to find the movies you really care about.
xXx being 1 or 2 stars - who cares?
But if Pete Travers thinks that Lord of the Rings is only a 2 star movie then I know I have nothing in common with him and have no need to read his reviews. - iSamurai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1 * Roger Ebert : 84%
* Rotten Tomatoes : 83%
* Peter Travers : 80%
* James Bernadelli : 78% -
