Which Bond is the Best Bond?
cinematical.com — Since Casino Royale comes out in just under two weeks, it's about time to start the debate: Which Bond was the best Bond? Before blindly handing the crown to Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan was the most successful at the box office, and Roger Moore was pretty damn sexy. Oh, and what about George Lazenby? George who? Cast your vote now!

- omgitscolin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Sean Connery was the most badass, and Roger Moore was the classiest and definitely the best dressed. Pierce Brosnan was the funniest, and in my opinion the best all-around. George Lazenby was so bad, he doesn't even count.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10Sean Connery's greatest role was in Indiana Jones for 1 line: "We named the dog Indiana"
best thing i've ever seen. - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I think it is more fun to debate the best Bond movie (Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice?) rather than the best James Bond. All Bond's (except Lazenby, he was not an actor but a male model) were great in their own way and each of those guys defined the legend. Timothy Dalton shouldn't be forgotten, he did a great job as a serious Bond and is easily the best actor of the bunch.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+103A rather confident 007 walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her a quick glance, then casually looks at his watch for a moment.
The woman notices this and asks,
"Is your date running late?"
"No", he replies, "I am here alone. Q has just given me this state-of-the-art watch and I was just testing it."
The intrigued woman says, "A state-of-the-art watch? What's so special about it?"
"It uses alpha waves to telepathically talk to me," he explains.
"What's it telling you now?"
"Well, it says you're not wearing any panties..."
The woman giggles and replies, "Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!"
007 taps, taps his watch and says "Damn thing must be an hour fast" - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10James Bond jumped the shark when his car became invisible. Here's hoping they pull it out of the gutter.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oh and not to continue the sockpuppet parade of boredom but some cool cat posted all of the James Bond intros, they're fun to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=james+bond+intros - jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Sean Connery is the badass Bond, plain and simple.
Roger Moore is the smooth, classy Bond.
George Lazenby- I don't remember
Timothy Dalton- a solid #3
Pierce Brosnan- a younger Roger Moore
Daniel Craig- I haven't seen him in action yet so I won't comment - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I liked Sean Connery. He was a no-nonsense Bond. All of the newer Bonds might try to sneak around, unnoticed by guards. Not Connery. He'd just snap the guard's neck and and move on.
- PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@nreynolds:
Connery's best line in any movie was in The Rock: "Losers whine about their best, winners go home and ***** the prom queen!"
And he was the best Bond, as well, though he was great as Indy's dad. And who else could play a Russian sub captain while speaking with a Scottish accent, and pull it off? - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I grew up with Pierce Brosnan by the time I was old enough to get into Bond, so he's kind of been my idea of Bond. I'm willing to give the new guy a chance. In my oppinion Casino Royale looks like it could be a great movie. They're striping it of all the technology and letting Bond be Bond. The last few movies, while good were getting a little overdone with all the fancy implausible gadgets.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10Sean Connery's greatest role was in Indiana Jones for 1 line: "We named the dog Indiana"
- micro506, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would have to go with Connery-Dalton-Brosnan-Moore-Lazenby (best to worst).
- Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You left out the best one... David Niven. :)
- Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You guys are both really missing out. I'm only 19 but I've seen a lot of the older ones, and they are great. Goldeneye was really the only great Brosnan bond film, with Tomorrow Never Dies being pretty decent. The most recent of his have sucked donkey balls.
Connery was probably the best, but I'll give Brosnan second as he is hardly to blame for most of his movies being terrible.
As for the oldies Goldfinger is probably my favorite. - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And don't forget Peter Sellers!
- gromnie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Left out Cliff Richardson too.
- Cornea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bob Holness the original and still the best Bond.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I vote Pierce Brosnan. Everything else was before my time :P
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I concur. Never have seen any Bond movies except the ones with Pierce, but I absolutely love the way he plays the character.
- nene7070, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i have to agree with this.... although Connery wasn't bad....
- thegsa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Connery FTW!
- kepano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oops
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55Hydrogen. Hydrogen-Oxygen is the best bond.
- kepano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But hydrogen bonds are merely strong intermolecular forces... Now the covalent bond, those were the days. Plus it drove an Aston Martin.
- siodine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Anyone that has seen Layer Cake will know how badass the next bond is going to be.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Puff Daddy there got that out before anyone else but just kidding Sean Connery was and is the best and probally the most sucessful
- aerofan897, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"You know Logel Moore?"
"Who? I'm sorry"
"Dobo-O-Seven!"
"Oh, Roger Moore?"
"Yes, Logel Moore"
"What about Sean Connery?"
"No, Logel Moore!"
(Lost in Translation)- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Easily one of the most under-rated movies ever.
- The5thHorseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Dalton (didn't get a fair chance)
Connery (classic)
Brosnan (Very pop, revived the brand)- buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, finally someone who gives Timothy the credit he deserves. He was an 80's Bond. His movies could have been better in the 90's or maybe earlier.
Anyone ever notice that Benicio Del Toro was in License To Kill? - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry, but for my money Dalton comes last. He was simply horrible.
Connery is the easy pick here, but I think Brosnan was the best all around "Bond". He had the looks, the grace, the wit, the charm and smugness to pull it off. Smooth.
- buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, finally someone who gives Timothy the credit he deserves. He was an 80's Bond. His movies could have been better in the 90's or maybe earlier.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Pierce Brosnan has been the best Bond so far, he was born to play the role. It's not his fault that all the scripts save GoldenEye sucked ass, even though the studio pretended that it was.
- mikesty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Anyone else ever think how awesome it would be if Brosnan and the Bond gang re-did some of the older Fleming scripts?
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Daniel Craig will be.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I really liked Timothy Dalton.... he tried to make Bond grittier after the camp Roger Moore incarnation.
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joey, Roger Moore was sexy?
Sean Connery is the Bond. - CooCooCoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Brosnan for goldeneye
- RTPMatt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Sean Connery, I enjoy his bond movies the most, and i don't care about any other facts...can anybody say Goldfinger? and BTW thunderball made $141,200,000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bond) in 1965 which is about $841,289,303 (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi) today, Pierce has only made $486,748,506
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Independence day made $816,969,255 and it still sucks. Success at the box office =/= a good movie.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Independence day made $816,969,255 and it still sucks. Success at the box office =/= a good movie.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Sean Connery is...*****, monergism said it already :(
- Ethyriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Fox River, but Neenah is pretty good too
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I like how Timothy Dalton's Bond was conflicted. He brought some additional depth to the role. The first Bond I saw was Roger Moore, though, and I grew up watching his version. Pierce Brosnan revived Bond, but to what end? It became one long commercial for BMW and other product placements. They also ran out of original Fleming stories.
I thought Connery was very charming, but I think he stayed on for too long. In the end, Moore's Bond is my favorite, particularly For Your Eyes Only. - w6bi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In the books, James Bond had a bit of a streak of cruelty in him. To that end, Sean Connery probably was most true to the books.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Head Connery, Tails Brosnan.
Came up heads.- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2i really didnt want to comment but that was the stupidest thing ive ever read
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4how ? I flipped a coin ? What's wrong with that ?
- 3vno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sean Connery
- jeff25624, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2For me, Brosnan was the first Bond I identified with. Connery may have defined the role in the 60's, but again I saw the Brosnan films first, so in my mind he is "Bond" simply because they were my first exposures to the franchise.
- p4r0l3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh this isn't even a question. I've seen every bond flick up till now and Sean Connery was easily the best.
Connery -> Moore -> Brosnan -> *
will definately be seeing the new movie in theaters, though i'm not too sure about this new actor. looks as if we may have another timothy dalton on our hands.... - TexTurboesq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dalton.
- begbegbegbegbeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sean Connery IS James Bond. All the others are Jimmy Bond.
- Valnar300, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Definitely from best-to-worst: Connery, Moore, Brosnan
I haven't seen the other actors. Connery to me is the "classic" Bond, Moore is the "best dressed/stylish", and Brosnan seem to just not fit in.... - CJUNIT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Pierce-Moore-Connery-Dunno bout Craig...
In that order. - cazoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i, being a child of the 70's, am a huge roger moore/bond fan. there i said it. its not a popular thing to admit but i feel free finally having gotten that off my chest.
- syphonist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Connery. Period.
He is just one of those guys that makes you feel a little less like a man when hes around, with that much testosterone and suave he is hard to ignore. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Answer is pretty much always going to be whoever was Bond when you first started watching the series
I've got a feeling I'm really going to like the new one and the direction they're taking it in- djpm05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not in my case. I grew up with brosnan, but I still say it connery is the best followed by moore, then brosnan. I hated dalton.
- rappatappa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sean Connery is Bond, everyone else just plays Bond.
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm interested to see how the new guy, Daniel Craig takes the Bond act. Casino Royale is the first Bond movie I'm actually hyped about.
But as for the best Bond, I hold an affinity to Brosnan as he's the first guy I picture when someone says James Bond. But I really do like the way Connery portrayed him. I'm not too keen on the other Bonds, though. - scallon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Moore was an alright Bond, but really it was just because he got some of the best scripts. Could you imagine if you gave Bronson the opportunity to do For Your Eyes Only or The Spy Who Loved Me? Bronson was Bond. He had to ability to be pissed and serious, but at the same time loosen his tie and pull off perfect Bond humor. He always seemed just a bit edgier than past Bonds.
I read an interview, a few years back, and the guy who played Q (not Cleese, the original Q) felt that the order was Bronson, Connery, Moore, Dalton, Lazenby. He said something about how he always felt Moore was never serious enough and Connery was always a little too serious.
Then again, that interview was around the time of Tomorrow Never Dies, so I'm not sure how failure that is The World is Not Enough would have affected his decision. - clownbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sean Connery IMO best bond next to Lazenby.. cant stand any of the others
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've always wanted to see a cameo of one of the previous bonds in the movie. Or similar to Connery as Indy's dad, a master-apprentice type thing.
- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It amazes me how many people write-off Lazenby without even having seen OHMSS.
- ajck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've seen it, and I'm writing off Lazenby. That wasn't even a proper Bond film - it was a spoof in the same way Austin Powers is a spoof of Bond. Only those made by the Broccoli's were proper Bond films.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1bondage is the best bond
- DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Remington Steele was better than most Bond movies.
Brosnan ftw. I can't get over the new guy's goofy look. Weird ears and a huge receding hairline. Clive was the better choice, although I think Farrell would've been good also.
Dylan McDermott would have been PERFECT I think.- CartoonAl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nothing wrong with wierd ears and a receding hairline.....
Farrell couldn't pull off the relaxed charm of bond. Clive might have managed it, but not sure. Connery best so far, holding out hope for Craig, though
as for Dylan McDermott... WTF??? No way, no way, no way. Never.
- CartoonAl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nothing wrong with wierd ears and a receding hairline.....
- writeman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Barry Nelson was the best Bond.
(Look it up.) - Triplbogey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Roger Moore is the best.
Sean Connery is such an ***** in real life he can't be my first choice.- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ytmnd
- rmayo87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sean Connery. hands down. not that the others were bad, persay. but he's the best to me.
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sean Connery.... I'm a straight male and even i'd sleep with him.
- ajck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2No mate, in that case you're a gay boy and need to get your head looked at.
- 4eloBek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sean Connery was good, and from what I`ve seen Craig is good at least in trailers, i was surprised.
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The one that gets laid by the hot chicks...I guess all of them ?
- ajck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4> Which Bond is the Best Bond?
1.) Exactly what is the point in asking this question before anyone's seen Daniel Craig as the new James Bond ? Are you stupid or something?
2.) Every professional review I've seen (several) based on early press showings of the film says that Craig is the only actor to have played Bond as Ian Fleming intended the character, and b.) is probably better than Sean Connery. Based on the many brief clips I've seen, I'd agree with this so far.
To all you Craig doubters - don't you look fools now?- buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to give Craig a chance. I read Casino Royale this summer and I'm looking forward to the film version. I'm not so big on the idea of the ending changing though. I hope they change it for the better.
With this film, we will learn why Bond is who he is, why he drinks a Vodka Martini, and treats women like he does.
- buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to give Craig a chance. I read Casino Royale this summer and I'm looking forward to the film version. I'm not so big on the idea of the ending changing though. I hope they change it for the better.
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm surprised (and pleased) that Dalton is getting some love here. Connery is the popular choice, but I think Dalton deserved more than he got. His Bond was darker, more conflicted and truer to the original Ian Fleming books. Dalton gets my vote.
- Lostcosmos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4C=C
/carbon-carbon double bond
/sorry had to.- CartoonAl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2no you didn't
- moisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think Dalton was let down by his films but as Bond I think he felt more realistic. Lazenby was by no means great but I feel he was let down by the film to a certain extent, plus he was only in 1 and I'f rather watch his bond than the last couple of Brosnan's or the worst of Moore's.
- dslartoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Connery gets the top nod for his combination of class with a slight touch of arrogance and pure danger. There was a hint of unpredictability to the way he played the character, as if you could never tell quite what he was going to do next. He also was best at portraying Bond's way with the women.
Pierce Brosnan is next for his ultra-urbane, ultra-cool, ultra-debonair portrayal.
Timothy Dalton next for his ice-cold and somewhat brutal demeanor. Interestingly, the way he played the character is probably the closest to the way he was originally written by Fleming. Reports are that Daniel Craig is taking it in that direction, too, though.
Roger Moore -- I never saw why people liked him so much. I just didn't particularly care for the way he portrayed Bond, so he's at the bottom of my list.
Lazenby I can't comment on as I haven't seen "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". - lare911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Connery is far and away the best. He is James Bond. The rest just bright and shiny knock-offs. I never liked Roger Moore...too flippant, and shallow. Brosnan wasn't bad but had poor scripts. Connery had the range to play the agent straight.
He was the epitomy of coiled danger ready to strike. But was also the suave, sophisticated man when in the element. Everyone else really came across as a poser, often overacting. -
