Robin died."
Ha ha ha. Hahahaha. Ha ha ha. Now that's funny. - selfobsessed, on 07/20/2008, -10/+174"Heath Ledger already had buzz for his performance in Christopher Nolan's grittier follow-up to " Batman Begins" before his untimely death in January. His version of the Joker -- sloppier, grimier and not as comic as Nicholson's -- has already become a polarizing benchmark for those who want to debate which actor had the best Joker performance."
Ha, debate? Ledgers performance blew Nicholson's out of the water. - subliminali, on 07/20/2008, -11/+143amazing timeline of info. about the joker, i had no idea he started out so campy.
on a separate note, i really ***** hate reading through a 'slideshow' of like 15 pages when there's clearly only a few paragraphs of information.. - malechite, on 07/20/2008, -0/+95at least they included Mark Hammil in this list

There, it happened. - Exbzurq, on 07/20/2008, -5/+72"DC Comics featured a four-part storyline in the regular Bat-comics in which the Joker savagely beat Robin and blew him up with a bomb. In a one-time-only gimmick, editors gave out two phone numbers to readers: one for those who wanted to see Robin live, the other for those who wanted to see Robin die.
Robin died."
Best thing the Joker ever did. - skyshock1, on 07/20/2008, -0/+66Agreed. Nicholson was just Nicholson in facepaint. Ledger gave us a complete psychopath.

- SirBruce, on 07/20/2008, -0/+46It was actually a very close vote, and right up until the end the editors expected Robin to live. But a lot of fans didn't like the new Robin (Jasonn Todd); the original Robin (Dick Grayson) had since gone onto how own career as Nightwing. Batman's portrayal had been growing progressive darker over those yars and having a brightly-colored kid sidekick was just out of place.
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -5/+48"with a story that involves the Joker paralyzing Commissioner Gordon's daughter, Barbara (aka Batgirl), then torturing the policeman with nude photos of her."
PICS OR IT DIDNT HAPPEN - inactive, on 07/20/2008, -1/+37I cast one of the death votes, and I still stand by my decision.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 07/20/2008, -1/+33Am I the only one that finds the Man Who Laughs pic the most unsettling of the bunch?
- JB449, on 07/20/2008, -8/+38I have to disagree. The two movies are very different. Each performance was great and appropriate for the mood of their respective films. You are comparing an apple to an orange. Although I must admit, I enjoyed Ledgers/Nolans portrayal of the Joker better than Nicholsons/Burtons.
- ishay, on 07/20/2008, -9/+39Scary pic!
- cerealjynx, on 07/20/2008, -1/+29I remember it when it happened. I called in for Robin to be saved, and learned an important life lesson.
- bagelmaster, on 07/20/2008, -0/+27Not so much when it's your daughter...
- bjs3171, on 07/20/2008, -1/+28i'm not sure i'd say Heath's Joker was less comic than Nicolson's. I thought he was actually quite hilarious, like the frame where he's pushing the button over and over to blow up the hospital. The way he's standing, and the look on his face, combined wiht the nurse's uniform, was really classic. It was just a much darker type of comedy.
- Shabow, on 07/20/2008, -2/+28This could easily have been on one page.
- jbrand45, on 07/20/2008, -1/+26yeah, Jason Todd sucked. I've always liked Tim Drake as Robin the best. He was a character I could more closely relate with then either Grayson or Todd.
Plus, Dick Grayson was much cooler as Nightwing anyway. Better costume, better attitude.
I voted that Jason Todd die. - dampeal, on 07/20/2008, -9/+31Cool, but why the slideshow, they could have just made an article with thumbs to view?! I guess the answer to why is more views equals more ad revenue, but it still sucks to have to flip through slides...
- spookyttws, on 07/20/2008, -1/+22Between the voice, the paint, the scares, and the mannerisms (the licking of the lips) I truly felt like I was watching a real life manifestation of the Joker, and not an actor playing the Joker. His voice training really paid off, I could not tell that it was Ledger.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 07/20/2008, -0/+18It's from The Killing Joke.
- vango, on 07/20/2008, -0/+16very nice, happyfundave!
- josephbloseph, on 07/20/2008, -2/+18If you don't like the submissions, spend some time away from your computer. May I suggest taking in a showing of The Dark Knight? I could post links to some articles if you want to read more about it.
- psbpv3o, on 07/20/2008, -2/+17Did any of the other jokers make a pencil dissapear? TDK's joker owns.
- JoelGoodsen, on 07/20/2008, -2/+16Interesting that they forgot, or chose not to include, one of the most important versions - The Dark Knight Returns - The Graphic Novel... Which is the inspiration for the movie...
Here's a link with some pix (did a quick, perfunctory search).. Also, FWIW, having read the book, but not seen the movie - I guess I should also warn that there's a spoiler here... but only for the graphic novel...
And no, I don't get *at all* why this particular page would be on this site... but go figure...
http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/Joker.html - D3koy, on 07/20/2008, -1/+15Killing Joke was amazing, and for those of you who haven't read it, I know for a fact there is a torrent of it out there... There was also a re-release of a re-colored version a few years back...
- twishart, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14I had no idea Hamill voiced the joker. And I watched the hell out of that show.
Hamill respect +1 - happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14cause black armored padding translates betting in real life then grey and blue spandex
- bagelmaster, on 07/20/2008, -6/+19This really has to stop. It's getting old and ruining that part of the movie for me and probably for others as well.
- thatsmyaibo, on 07/20/2008, -1/+14Which is one of the best Batman graphic novels ever. It has the best Joker background story for those who are interested in the character. Also recommended...The Man Who Laughs and The Long Halloween.
- Exodust, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11Who the ***** is Hedger?
- antdude, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11It's all about $$.
- nerdherder, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11I think the one of Cesar Romero was the most unsettling.
- whatthefu, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11I don't know why people have to debate between Nicholson and Ledger. They portrayed different Jokers of different eras, one more comical and the other darker. They were both great at carrying out their part. I only prefer Ledger's because I prefer the darker aspect, but I still love Nicholson's.
- Oea420, on 07/20/2008, -1/+12"Mark Hamill, better known as Luke Skywalker"
I don't know why, but I lol'd - therearenorules, on 07/20/2008, -3/+14"ha ha ho ho hu hu huhuhuhhu hahah hohoh hohohohho" -heath ledger
- TheRascalKing, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10If we were in highschool, this is the point where the guy in the letter jacket takes christopheles' lunch and gives josephbloseph a wedgie.
- happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10I'd have to disagree, while the image of Nicholson was lifted right out of the comics, the character of the joker in Nolan's movie is straight out of the comics he sited as his main influence.
- Darklyte510, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10Also, Nolan's whole approach was to make Batman and the world that he inhabits to be more believable so wearing armor makes more sense than spandex... Well depending on your activities but I meant for fighting crime :)
- fuzzynyanko, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10Hamil's Joker had so much class. When I saw "The Batman", they replaced Hamil with a Joker that was more of a WWE wrestler, but tried to emulate Mark Hamil. It didn't work
- PilotHead, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10It's funny, this is actually a short list, there is still a few more versions of the joker. The strangest one for me is still Frank Miller's Joker from The Dark Knight Returns. Very effiment but scary at the end
- RikkiTikki, on 07/20/2008, -4/+13I know Jack Nicholson praised for being the Joker, but my memory will always associate the role with Health Ledger.
- zephyrnug, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9the original actor from the 1920s movie looks pretty psychotic. scarier then any of the other jokers for sure, excluding heath ledger perhaps.
- christopheles, on 07/20/2008, -1/+10Hate to break it to ya' buddy but Jason Todd is alive and well after Superboy Prime pounded on the wall of reality or some such idiocy
- Rage67, on 07/20/2008, -2/+11you just agreed
- z3r0c0O1, on 07/20/2008, -8/+17The Joker > Batman
- dampeal, on 07/20/2008, -4/+12It was terrible... ooohh.. about picture 7 my finger cramped out and boy that hurt... it was just excruciatingly painful, it hurt so bad I had to switch fingers so I could make it through the rest of the pictures..
