- NinjAlt, on 10/12/2007, -12/+61"The £2 million movie, called Death of a President, has sparked controversy in America, with its British film-makers having to be guarded by private security men at this week's Toronto International Film Festival after threats were made on their lives."
Reminds me of those cartoons on Islam. People who totally dont understand and are flipping out like little children. This movie is to explore how the world would handle an assasination. It does not glorify or promote the assasination of bush. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42I'm outraged that it's in WMV
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -20/+57Speak for yourself.. I'm not outraged.
- nopointinnames, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36Yeah I'm kinda in the same boat here. It's a pretend video, let's just chill out and let the water flow under the bridge. As long as no REAL George W's were harmed in the making of this film then no big deal, not that I like the man.
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36You're right, look at the comments under the article. People are outrageously "shocked" and "disgusted". It's merely a premise to examine the effects of such an event on the "War on Terror". The movie isn't titled, "Hey, let's kill the President! (Shhhh! We think it's a good idea!)".
It's really akin to asking, "What if Churchill had been assassinated?", or "What if Napoleon were victorious at Waterloo?".
People also take the Presidency entirely too seriously. Bush isn't a religious figure, you can't blaspheme him and shouldn't worship the President. He's simply a man, a "servant of the people", or at least he should be. Let's not elevate him to icon status.
While the killing of any man is a horrible act, a thought exercise is just that. Simmer down people. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24I'm quite sure that this wouldn't make the terrorists angry. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Usama Bin Laden will probably enjoy this movie in the comfort of his rug in a cave somewhere.
- Hoopkidups, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21To be honest, I don't think this video has "outraged America". That's a pretty big statement - I'm an American and I'm actually not all that outraged, and I haven't really heard much about this movie outside digg. I'm guessing it's not going to get a lot of attention in the media, so maybe it would be better to say the video has "outraged a few Americans."
- kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -20/+38"Hope springs eternal in the human breast..."
I hope you are joking, but even for a joke that is a pretty immature and callous thing to say. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22If you honestly believe this, then the Fox News/Neo-con thought police have clearly infected your brain.
Note: Its a movie. Its fictional. In this "Land of Freedom" of ours, how could you justify this being illegal? - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Like that would happen - Bush wouldn't go anywhere near people protesting. They take a detour when that happens.
- washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It's 100%, without a doubt, protected by the first amendment. This film isn't a threat, direct or indirect, to anyone. It is an expression of ideas. There is no clear and present danger stemming from this film. It's as real as President Bill Paxton declaring our independence day. Or Lonelygurl15.
Regardless of what you think of the POTUS, this film is thought provoking and intriguing. - Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17That is a really good analogy. The "neocon-fascists" are behaving exactly as their "Islamo-fascist" brethren, whom they claim to oppose.
- ajamer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I wonder how surprised everyone would be if this happened. Ancient Indians have warned us about this impending doom for a while.
From snopes.com:
Legend: A death curse threatens U.S. presidents elected in years evenly divisible by twenty.
Origins: With one exception, since 1840, U.S. Presidents who have been elected in years ending in zero have been killed or have died of natural causes while in office. And the one exception literally came within an inch of death.
It's hard to know what to make of such a sequence, but folks have certainly tried over the years. Such a string of presidential mortality is deemed too improbable to have occurred naturally, giving rise to rumors about a fatal Indian curse among those unwilling to recognize that chaos sometimes takes the form of coincidence. Randomness is disquieting; Indian curses are, in comparison, the lesser of the evils because they at least support the illusion that there is order in our universe. In this odd way, belief in predestined fatalities is comforting.
Died Under the "Curse"
1840 ... William Henry Harrison
1860 ... Abraham Lincoln
1880 ... James A. Garfield
1900 ... William McKinley
1920 ... Warren G. Harding
1940 ... Franklin D. Roosevelt
1960 ... John F. Kennedy - BigBaRay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9NO WMV????? BUSH LIED
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11But they don't say that at all. They say, "If you killed person x, this is what might happen..."
This is fiction, not a death threat. - TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19The line between justice and vengence is a thin one indeed.
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11They should rephrase it to "the video that's outraged the American government"
I am outraged that I am being accused of being outraged! :P - ippersiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Like his inauguration?
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i agree, i'm an american, not only am i not outraged, but no one i know is outraged either... just because some people doesn't mean everyone is. For just about everything, you can find people who are outraged by it. I give an example from The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror XII... When Kang and Kodos (the aliens) pretended to be Clinton and Dole, one said "Abortions for none" and people booed, then the other said "Abortions for all" and people booed to that. Anything political will outrage someone somewhere.
- mojoel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11George Bush has done nothing that I can recall that was positive for the U.S. and done even less for the rest of this planet. Trust me, I'm far from outraged at this movie.
- waz67, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Note to webmasters: If you're going to make a thumbnail link to a larger image, the larger image better be more than just 30% larger.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Even if I don't agree with Bush with a lot of things, I wouldn't want this to happen. Wanting this is as bad as being a terrorist and is distasteful. And worst of all... Dick Chaney would become the next president.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Man there is no publicity like free publicity.
The film makers had to hire private secuity men? Give me a break, your security guard is nothing more than a 400lb billboard in a suit.
This movie looks great, can't wait to see it. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The Daily Mail are not the same parent company as Fox News. The Times and The Sun are newspapers in the UK owned by Murdoch, The Daily Mail isn't.
However, The Daily Mail is certainly a right wing paper, and probably the closest in ideology and politics as Fox News is. - Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm guessing that the "shock" and "outrage" is a marketing ploy more than anything else. I can't really imagine anyone I know responding that way to a movie plot. Even that O'Reilly twit on Fox wouldn't give it anything more than an eye roll.
Honestly. It's a movie. There's nothing particularly shocking or outrageous about a film where the president gets shot. It's a plot hook in many other films before it. In this case it's Bush, but everyone understands it's just trying to be topical or controversial to get people to fork out cash to see it.
No, sir. I smell astroturf here. - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Surprise: the majority of Americans aren't outraged because they understand that it's a work of fiction. Some might find it in bad taste, sure, but the media outlets are just making a big f'ing deal out of it so that people will click articles. Maybe a few right-wing loonies will care, but those bastards have always had a disproportionate voice anyway.
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It doesn't matter if it's legal in the states. The movie is was made in Britain, I believe. What is the U.S. going to do, sanction the U.K. over it? :)
- washingtonydc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I just wish he had the same respect for our constitution as you do for him and his elected position.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No, I tend to be outraged only when I see a fake assassination video of someone I care about.
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No doubt, what reason has he given me to respect him? He's a crook, a liar, and a murderer. I have more respect for a goldfish than I do dubya, or his daddy. By the way, what kind of a grown man refers to his father as "Daddy" in front of millions of people. What a dick.
- 10001110101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For those who are wondering, Reagan is the one who came within an inch: "the distance by which would-be assassin John Hinckley's bullet missed his heart in 1981".
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ josh
I agree with the top half of your statement wholeheartedly. As for the bottom part, half of this country didn't vote for the corrupt leadership we have now. He doesn't say anything about us. - ejdunphy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I cant make out one thing in that video, just a bunch of people screaming. Poor attempt at making a 'real' fake video...
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7It's amazing how many people can freely comment on the Constitution they live under, without understanding it. Just in case anyone is too dense, nobody is saying they are going to actually shoot at the President.
It's protected speech, you *****. - jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7At some point in your life, you need to take a few moments to look in the mirror and ask yourself, what kind of person am I?
I did not vote for Bush or like a lot of what he's done. But to glorify and take pleasure in a scenario where another human being is murdered is absolutely disgusting. - Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why should it outrage you? If a normal civilian was responsible for as many senseless deaths as this President is, you would be calling for his head.
- ths453, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah if the terrorist had netflix this would read "long wait".
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm not so sure we're the gullible ones..
- Elohim, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Why hasn't this happened for real yet???
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@masamunecyrus: I would tend to think Bin Laden and Bush have a somewhat of a symbiotic relationship (not that it's intentional or direct). They need one another to some extent. Americans need an enemy leader to hate, the Wahabbists need an American leader exactly like Bush to hate.
They're each fuel for the other's side. Say in '08, however unlikely, that an eeeeeeevilllll (in a Rush Limbaugh voice) capitulating, Francophile Democrat is elected who gives into all of Al Qaeda's demands? We all convert to Islam. Will there be a Jihad, or cause against the Great Satan any longer?
For Bin Laden to be important, he needs us to be "evil" from a Muslim point of view. I think he'd be rather disappointed if Bush were assassinated. :) - donloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know why anyone who hates Bush would want him to get assassinated. Then he'll be like JFK, who had dismal approval ratings at the time he was killed and yet today is revered as some sort of hero. Kill Bush and you're just asking for him to be one of the most respected presidents 40 years from now.
- fleischner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Jesus Christ. Learn spelling and grammar, THEN maybe your moronic thoughts will seem only idiotic.
- spurtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3God, I need coffee. I just read that as "Where's the movie about Queen getting shot? or Tenacious D?
- KanosWRX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think its pretty sick when people wish this on someone. Wishing death on anyone is a pretty harsh thing to say. I mean I would rather see BinLaden rot in a prison for the rest of his life, at hard labor no less then have him killed. Some people are just sick wether you like the person or not you just as bad as him if you truly think that way. Now if the movie was about some fictional president then it would be more appropriate and have some actual place in society, but it seems like a pretty obvious knock towards the president of the US.
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Time for the digg circle-jerk. Get your cumrags ready, the KOS kiddies are here!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(And FDR was elected earlier than 1940... but he was re-elected in 1940)
- bryclark21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I liked the refund checks he sent me in the mail!
- wallosoup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Saying you are going to kill someone is definitely not protected speech, neither is yelling "fire" in a crowded theater (as the popular example gos). In the special case of the President it will earn you at minimum a call from the Secret Service. In fact one of my classmates in High School had to explain himself after making similar comments in a paper. In most cases the Secret Service probable just scares you and convinces themselves you aren't serious, but they certainly look into any threats that are made.
- pauly1980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"...the video that's outraged America..." Who writes these things? I mean, this is the problem with the blogosphere. Every last moron can write, but few have the ability to edit out rhetoric or catch themselves making exaggerations such as these.
Outraged? Im just outraged that I wasted my time reading this. Im off to the low-digg pile where the good news clippings are. - rgov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As many people have commented hitherto, this is fiction, and not a threat against GWB in any way. It's completely covered by free speech - they don't advocate shooting the President, they don't offer a plan to do so, and they don't intend to themselves. It is the difference between "I am going to drive home drunk today and get arrested." and "If I were to drive home drunk today, I would be arrested."
It occurs to me that this is completely analogous to A Christmas Carol. The ghosts explain to Scrooge how the world would be without him, just as this movie shows how the world would be without Bush. Obviously, it is crucial that Bush die somehow in order to complete the story - whether he died peacefully in bed, from cancer, or by bullet.
