- Cryptkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wow, I can't believe this reporter, he seems, very (for lack of a better word) Superior, almost eccentric (sorry, having one of those days where i can't seem to express myself) he walks into the guys office, and starts blasting him on "oh really, this HELPS you, it HELPS you be more PRODUCTIVE? what are you? a freaking CHILD? this company is stupid, i don't see how it can work"
the reporter seems (in my opinion) like he hates his job, and is just doing it for the sake of getting paid.
maybe if he had more toys in his office.... ;) - esac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've worked at MS for almost 10 years now, and life used to be like that at Microsoft as well. Even the free food, although it wasn't a policy, we were given free meal cards all of the time, especially if we put in the extra work and time. I still get those cards, but more like once every 2 months now instead of 3 times a week.
Every Friday we have a beer party in my office, all paid for by work. About twice a month we have a huge party in the cafeteria, beer, wine, food, entertainment.
The soda/coffee/tea/milk/juice is always free. Life is good.
But I seriously see google cutting these things in the future just like MS did. Nobody can be on top forever. - Xtrem3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That Bob Woodruff guy was a real jerk, making fun of that guys stuff in his office...
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ABC fratboy reporter Bob Woodruff visits Google, makes ass of self. News at 11.
- SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It just goes to prove that many out there just don't "get" geek culture... It's far too alien for them....but I'll $$ money that Woodruff is arguing with his boss about why he can't have a Tower of Chaos in his lil box-with a view...
SB - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It never ceases to annoy me how media organizations continue to do the 'wow this company is new and terrific and SO DIFFERENT!' story, told a million times during the dot-com era, with modern-day Google. ITS THE EXACT SAME STORY. Different financial market.
The whole laid-back scooter-running internet workstyle was founded back in the late 90's people. Google did not invent it. Nor did they invent search. Their claim to fame is that they own the internet advertising market, which they stole from Yahoo! through a better mousetrap. Everything else has been aquisitions and also-ran products, and products which needed big capital ( 1GB free webmail ). Some of their products, like their IM client, are simply also-rans.
One a day a couple of Indian programmers will do them one better, and ABC will do another story about how these crazy whiz kids write code and ride scooters. Whoopee do. - MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You guys should watch the video:
http://digg.com/technology/The_world_according_to_Google_-_BBC_Video
Its a full half hour, and makes a fool out of people like Judy Blume who claim that Google Books is hurting her business because people can search her book, and receive 10 word snippets. Lol.

A master plan? Microsoft doesn't have a master plan posted on their wall...
Scooters? Microsoft never let me ride a scooter for work....
Maybe we should let Google take over the world after all...free food...scooters...publicly available master plan....doesn't sound so bad... - mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, that world map with the google traffic thing is AWESOME! I want one.
- Hachi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There was a video on the BBC a few days ago covering some more serious issues with Google. Surprised it wasn't dugg more, http://digg.com/technology/The_world_according_to_Google_-_BBC_Video
- ween, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2great video about google. i have to agree that the bob guy was a tool. you could just hear the contempt and disdain oozing out of him
- cheztir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2holy crap. free food, fun crap in your office, assuming very nice workstations, watching the earth monitor for about an hour. now thats life.
- Raystream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yikes! When I first started watching it I thought Bob Woodruff was joking around. But wowsers... what a Jerk!!!! I am surprised no one punched him. He acted as if he was talking to children!
- CrazyAntal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I don't know who Bob Woodruff is, but I now dislike him."
I'm with you-- what a painfully boring tool! - riddlebox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7The ABC guy is so pissed that ABC treats him like *****....and hes a ***** tool anyways.
- Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know who Bob Woodruff is, but I now dislike him. However, very cool video. +Digg
- gmacster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Bob Woodruff is an *****
- Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice, but they should have picked another guy to do it. That bob woodruff guy made it kinda boring to watch
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks like a fun place, but that Woodruff guy reminds me of Steve Carell's character in the Office.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if Bob Woodruff knows what means though. He really did seem like a fish out of water.
- liquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked when Wooddruff was like, "This is how they get around, scooters. I don't even know how to ride one of these,"
What an idiot...you get on, and press the go button or whatever. It's not that hard Bob. - bahaal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice presentation. The anchor sounds sarcastic at points when saying good luck and yet it all points to being envious ;) Go GOOGLE :-)
- tawker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google has some nice policies.
I like Google - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1he was at Google this morning shooting this i guess. saw him there this morning talking about the Google VS USA thing
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, just amazing....great company!!!!!!!!!!
- Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting...let's see how the people who commented on Bob above have or haven't changed their opinions of Woodruff now.
- kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Interviewer" goes into one of the world's most important company and all he talks about is free food... and he's inarticulate to boot. What a hopeless tool.
...but seeing the campus was totally cool. ++digg - tastyterrorist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google > *
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Captain of the Football team at the Dead concert."
Hahah. Excellent analogy for Bob. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hah.
I would have said "Hey Bob, is Disney's stock valued at $450? I don't think it is. So until then, shut your mouth." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're an ad delivery company, you tools. The search allows them to target you with the ads.
- gregpalmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bob Woodruff appears to be the biggest fool on TV.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mightymouse: They want to expand into whatever's interesting in tech.
- eltraen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ditto the Steve Carell reference. Bob Woodruff seemed annoyed that Google works the way it does. Maybe he had to seem condescending because of the enormous amount of smarts at Google. It's like a smarts singularity.
- Nighthawke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hee, The ABC crew looked a little red behind the ears being in the middle of such a prolific company having all these great perks and get to play with all those gadgets. This Woodward fellow looked like he was completely lost at times, other times so completely envious that he was not hiding it one bit.
The Master Plan whiteboard wall is actually a great idea for it shows that the company is open with it's future ideas and plans, even if it is humorus in places, it can still start the seed of The Idea. Keep that in mind folks. Look at your company's plans, ask yourself "Is this what we want to do? What can we do to make this compnay better/profitable/easier to manage/comfortable to live in/et ectera and so on and so forth". - awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't know who Bob Woodruff is, but I now dislike him."
i totally agree, the video was mildly interesting though - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I kinda feel bad for poor Bob. Here he is jetsetting around the world, probably not getting paid very much, never even getting a free lunch on ABC, and they don't even give him a teleprompter to read off of! The nerve! Well, just goes to show you that Google really is going to take over the world someday and people will get their news from nerds with toys in their offices instead of good looking guys who can't hide their true jealousies when there is no script...
- superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that looks awesome! hahaha the anchor was hilarious, so obviously jealous of the happy hippie guys working at google and getting free food.
- jflint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I get the same kind of reactions that Woodruff had when people ask about my office.
So we have an XBox 360 and a Foosball table. :-) - zelig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bob Woodruff should be doing weather reports in Fargo.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that was entertaining. Looks like a great place to work
- AllanX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love how confused Woodruff was that the Google employees had toys in their cubicles (my guess is his parents gave him dolls when he was a kid), and his seeming alarm that they had "free medical," free haircuts and especially free food.
I thought his head was going to explode as he kept coming back to the free food miracle. It was like he was watching Google demonstrate turning lead into gold. As he walked away with his back to the camera after talking to the blonde guy with the ponytail in the cafeteria, you could imagine him muttering "Unf***in' believable..." under his breath.
Fun to see some candid footage of the headquarters, though. Digg. - fritts1227, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bob Woodward is a douche... I love how he did this run around and just find crap to talk about style of reporting. Google would be awesome to work for.
- njbair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That whole video was very awkward. I'm not sure if that's the fault of Bob Woodruff, or the software engineers.
- xjbri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously guys, that wasn't a real news report. It was a kind of behind-the-scenes web feature. (They show the crews getting ready in one part) Yeah, the reporter didn't seem all that great, because it wasn't an edited news story, he was just walking around showing you things. When you see news stories or reports on the TV they are all scripted, edited, rehersed, etc.
I thought it was kinda cool, you don't see reporters just go out and walk around like that, improvising as they go. Especially when he gets free reign in Google headquarters. Although, he was getting in the way of all those people, it was kinda funny.
Google looks like a cool place to work, but it probably won't last. - jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm, I have a Kick The Cheat plushy in my office... :)
- GoFlyaKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The BBC Story was Great! I can't believe it didn't make it to the front page as well?
DIGG THE BBC STORY!!!
http://digg.com/technology/The_world_according_to_Google_-_BBC_Video - systemghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reporter seems like a total wanker. And I realized that having long hair in a ponytail and a goatee is a must for someone working in a tech field. I have long hair in a ponytail and a goatee. Hire me Google, please.
- cbags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If googles work atmospshere is so great...why aren'tthere any goddamn graphics people in house. Their stuff looks like crap! Don't the fruity graphics guys want to play with the chaos tower...or is THAT the graphics guy...he doesn't seem to be to concerned about getting anything done!
- roastedbagel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"apparently the employees dont take advantage of the free haircuts"
LOL i thought the same thing....Id love to work there, seems a lot more interesting than SBC... -
