If this was Fark...this would be a badass photoshop contest...movies based around Microsoft products - fofr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I think it should be stated that:
"Microsoft is already in talks with other distribution partners and preparation for the movie will continue. Most of this development is at Peter Jackson's Weta effects studios in New Zealand, so delays should be small" - http://halomovie.trivialbeing.net - lateralis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18it worked in v for vendetta.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15And really, I hate to break it to the fanboys (I loved Halo myself), but the story is just as generic as Street Fighter. It's nothing we haven't seen before and there are no compelling characters. I'm sorry, but "Master Chief" would have to go through a lot of changes before audiences of the general mainstream theatre would enjoy him.
You say "So what" "Forget mainstream" -- Well, gamers make up less half of the mainstream theatre audience (which is still a lot), but for a movie that would cost that much money to produce, there is no way that they would be able to make any profit.
Think about Superman Returns, a much more mainstream film with an audience outside of gamers and comic book fans, still barely broke even. How do you think this will do? There is no sell, nothing to get mom and dad or Joe Smoe and his girlfriend to go see it unless Joe is a huge Xbox and Halo fan.
I hate saying this, but I actually agree with Fox and Universal for once. The only other thing I agreed with Universal on was Serenity. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12You are a ***** moron.
- digitalrift, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Why? Movies based on video games almost always suck as a rule. If you need examples go watch the mortal kombat movies, street fighter... most recently, silent hill.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the central concept of the Halo is a major ripoff!
- GrayV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I like the game, but that doesn't mean I want to see a movie about it - I'd rather the money was spent on making another game. I suck so I can get a good month's worth of entertainment out of a game, but game movies last approx 100 minutes and are typically *****.
Looks like Fox and Universal have finally realised that trying to steal candy from babies doesn't actually make you any richer. Good. ***** off and let us enjoy our well-made games.
Make good movies and we'll come watch them too. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oh they need to invent a new type of death for you.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Chiefchad: "Peter Jackson is a ***** Loser king kong is the worst movie I have ever seen."
Yes, I also thought that "Peter Jackson is a ***** Loser king kong" was a terrible film. The title is pretty strange too. - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What did they expect? From the frist time I heard of this movie coming out I knew it was going to be expensive, there's no way to replicate it on the cheap.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh please, if you were a real video game nut during that time you went to see the sneak peak at super mario 3.
And for a 80's flick it wasn't that bad. (the wizard) - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't think it has that much to do with the budget, although I'm sure it played a factor. I think this mostly comes down to the fact that Neill Blomkamp has only directed one short. While I'm not questioning his talents, I'm(and I'm sure the studio is as well) questioning his ability to direct a major property such as halo and direct it well. You can't afford to risk a film with a 200million dollar budget on someone who never directed a big movie before.
If Jackson was directing the movie, I'm sure the studios wouldn't have pulled out. - ImaBrowncoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This sounds less like a movie deal and more like an international arms dealing going south. I'm still hopeful..though not enough to count my chickens before they hatch. There's still plenty of room within "Microsoft is already in talks with other distribution partners and preparation for the movie will continue..." for failure. What needs to happen is Bill Gates needs to get involved and show up at these distribution companies and "buy them out" like he bought Homer out in the Simpsons. Goons and baseball bats is the only way to deal.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Superman Returns sucked ass though
- adamnikyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PS
Tempbot is excellent viewing.

agreed... but they could totally pull it off if they hired the guys from "red vs. blue" to write the script. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Although I enjoy the Halo series I really wish they'd make a movie off the books that Halo used for the basis of its concept!
Does anyone besides me know that Halo is almost a mirror copy of Larry Niven's Ringworld books? - 90sChild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4even if it did (somehow) get ahead, if Microsoft is involved, you can guarantee its gonna come out late, and by the time its ready, they will have taken out all the cool parts of it
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've been itching for news about how production has been coming, but THIS is NOT the news I was aiming for.
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@digitalrift - I agree with you, but Silent Hill is actually the best movie based on a video game I've seen, and they even tried to keep the atmosphere true to the games. Honestly it likely would have been a bit better if they had not had the full explanation of everything in the last 30 minutes of the movie.
- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Misleading
It states in the article that preproduction is going ahead as planned. The movie isn't as in jeopardy as the title makes it out to be. - nathanchase, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4To be honest, I was more looking forward to Neill Blomkamp's contributions to the film than Peter Jackson's, His short films are nothing short of amazing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neill_Blomkamp - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Paul Allen Returns
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Whoopdee doo. Halo isn't that great. Who would want to sit through a 2 or 3 hour movie of one man fighting cartoonish purple and red aliens without much dialog going on? It does not work people, for reference, watch DOOM. These two types of games are not transferrable to the big screen.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Actually, Doom was only 100 mins long (director's cut was 13 mins longer).
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"How are you going to do an 2-hour movie based on it, without showing Master Chief's face?"
Simple: Don't show his face. Problem solved. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Absolutely! We totally need a Ringworld movie first.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here's a video from the news here in New Zealand:

(from http://www.black-magic.co.nz/home/?p=359 ) - osfn8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This movie is either going to suck or be awesome, but Hollywood doesn't want to take a risk. This is one reason fewer people are going to the movies: they make a bunch of cookie-cutter movies and don't take risks on movies like Halo.
- stev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They spelled Bungie wrong.

He has directed more than ONE short. - chokeslam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is like the Nintendo movie with Fred Savage from the late 80's/early90's. Big mistake, M$. Halo will become a joke after this is finally released.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw tempbot a long time ago and yes you are right it is great
- seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pity. feel sorry for the guy that got the directing gig. gave hope to all of us who dream of breaking in.
Hollywood crapping itself over risks and costs. - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2like i said, this sucks
- darthmunky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This better be false. If it's not, they're going to lose so much money and I will be sooo mad. I've been waiting for this movie for years! I would kill someone for this movie to be made.
- farrellj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That makes two of us...I'm a huge fan of Ringworld, and the other Known Space stories!
ttyl
Farrell - Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree that King Kong is a boring story, but I though Peter Jackson did as good a job with it as humanly possible.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pixar help? They're not a distribution company - they needed Disney for that. Course you're being sarcastic, but had to point that out. :)
- chiefchad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Peter Jackson shave your hairy palms and die already we are sick of your fat ass
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ignore.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why doesn't Microsoft just start up their own movie production studio. They have more than enough money and could use it in the future.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Paging Uwe boll! I'm sure he'd make a wonderful Halo movie. It might even be as good as the games themselves!
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For whatever reason, I never saw it happening anyhow...
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My mistake, IMDB only lists one under his directing credits.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you had actually READ Niven's book, you would not criticize Halo for copying it. In Halo, the ringworld is a small satellite orbiting a gas giant. In Ringworld, the ringworld is millions upon millions of miles across, and completely surrounds the orbit of a star.
- DAC1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Vidgame adaptation rumored to be too pricey"
ITS A RUMOR!!! READ THE SUBTITLE! - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What Halo has going for it is that it could be worked into an EXCELLENT sci-fi movie. The fans can be pleased by proper recreation of the games into movie form and people who have never heard of the games can be happy from a really good sci-fi movie.
- modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i'm gonna laugh my ass off when this movie comes out and it's huge success, see how much money universal and fox lose out on. they got a good director, they trashed the lame script the 28 days later guy wrote, they got peter jackson, and they have the greatest visual effect studio working on it. there's plenty going for this movie.
