- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oh noes!! I was going to wait to get a HD player until after the format war was over. Now I may have to drop the money on an HD-DVD player for the sole reason of watching Serenity. And I'm betting that they will stick all the goodness that is going on the UK and Australian DVD releases onto the HD-DVD. Any maybe some more more commentary, (Nathan Fillion would be awesome, especially with Alan Tudyk. Their commentary on "War Stories" was hilarous). Maybe even Jewel Staite with Morena Baccarin too. (sighs).
If BluRay wins, I can just imagne somebody, 10 years from now, picking up the obsolete ND-DVD player and asking what it was. I would say:
"Here's how it is. Sony and the BluRay folks, thems formed the BluRay Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule. A few idiots tried to fight 'em. Among 'em, myself." - cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As much as I don't like either side, HD-DVD will be the better of the two evils. HD-DVD will not have *as much* DRM as Bluray. And besides, who trusts Sony anymore?
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some people are clueless. Just get a Mpeg4/xvid/divx player and get free movies/'
Or if your all morally absutue, get a mpeg4 player and just transcode your OWN movies from DVD (or netflix)
Who the ***** buys a HDDVD player and 1 movie (serenity)? During a format and price rape period?
THE FRIGGIN FILM WAS NOT SHOT IN HD, therefore it will never look like true HD...... it will have wiremesh and all that crap visible on a good hdtv.....which again NOONE really has!
so lets add costs
NEW HD-DVD movie 40$
new HDDVD player 159$
NEW HDTV 1000-2000$?
More DRM4u=priceless.
all guesstimates for "better than the norm" quality
Doesent matter if you like serenity or Chronicles ofRiddick.... but the reg.DVD and watch it in its native resolution....not stretched to some ungodly pixels/mm
Oh and not to mention your buying into the new "draconian" as some ppl dubbed it DRM. DRM loving phonies.
Screw HDDVD and Screw Bluray. DVD, despite what the industry wants to make you believe, has plenty of life left in it. Heck, I still see tons of VHS at my local blockbuster/rogers video. New VHS releases are supposedly to stop this year. We'll see.
DVD will live for at least another 3-5years in a dominant marketshare. - spider-man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I really like Serenity but why does Universal bother?
Universal was utterly horrible marketing Serenity. They practically spared every expense. I saw maybe two commercials on major commercial network TV. Maybe. They did a fair amount on the SCI-FI channel only but that's like preaching to the choir. When the DVD was released there was absolutely no advertising for it. Normally at places like Walmart they have big posters on the front doors days before even crappy to mediocre movies are released. None for Serenity. Even horrid movies like Dark Water (from what I heard) got the big poster on the door plus a stand with copies near the checkout in your face. To find a copy of Serenity, you had to first know it was out and then go back to the electronics area and dig it out. I get regular emails from Blockbuster telling me the weekly new releases. No mention of Serenity at all. It really seems to me that Universal is as bad as Fox with this. Aside from funding it (which is obviously a huge thing) they have done next to nothing to make this a successful project. If it eventually turns a profit it is a testament to the quality of the work despite the worst efforts of Universal. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That does it, im in HD-DVD's camp
- Timan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So now I need my 2nd copy of serenity right after santa brought it :(
- garybrooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, What are you smoking? Of course it wasn't "filmed" in HD. It was filmed in film. A 35mm film print can resolve more lines of resoultion than 1080p. It's also the reason that DVDs of old tv shows that were created with film look better than the 80s early 90s shows that used standard def video cameras. At least a lot newer tv shows are being recorded in hi def even if they aren't being broadcast as such.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg, you say we're gonna explode... i dont wanna explode...
- elvisripley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HD-DVD also includes more audio stuff like the future DVD-Audio format and compatibility with DVD Studio Pro which opens it up to a large amount of non super studios. The line up for BluRay is as week as the launch lineup for UMD. Hitch? What kind of early adopter would want to watch Hitch when they could watch Serenity or an HD version of DUNE!!!!! SPICE WORMS IS THERE A CONNECTION!!!! In HD-DVD there is.
- cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Timan
That's a good thing. The more money Serenity makes the more of chance their is for a second movie or the return of the series Firefly. - rezryder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the listing for blu ray dvd releases? O and dugg, cause the fact that hd movies are coming, rock!!
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool! we can all play these on our hilariously overpriced and non-existant HD DVD players!!! Maybe they'll charge $60 for the disks instead of $10 or $20 like a normal DVD!!! Another excuse to waste money on ***** i dont need! I cant wait!!!!!
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They sold me. IN LIKE FLYNN!
- strike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0guessing they will be in 720p, but hoping for 1080p
- bigboehmboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lololol plan 9!!
Seriously though, before now, I though HDDVD was dead, considering sony is using bluray, but serenity alone has made me uneasy, and now i think i'll have to go with HDDVD ^_^ - bamcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More HD-DVD titles including King Kong and Mission Impossible 3 are posted here:
http://www.digg.com/movies/First_High-Def_DVD_Titles_Revealed
I am seeing a lot of stuff that is coming out in both formats (like MI:3). Someone like Pioneer, who is planning on making a player that can handle both, is going to be the winner in my opinion. - 1ivewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just wait for the dual format player so no one can laugh at you since you won't have another Betamax ten years later.
- RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So it will look even worse in HD. Congrats on that...
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been hearing about this HD DVD stuff for a while, too bad my HDTV doesn't have a HDCP or whatever the hell you need to play HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disks.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That seals the deal im buying HD-DVD
- cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That does it, im in HD-DVD's camp"
Pure genius. (Monkey starts typing, LOL)
Really only move worth in that list is probably Apollo 13. They need to do something major in repro--I saw Space Cowboys on 1080p on a 50ft screen from direct transcoding and it was awful (can see the wires!). - ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ummm... I didn't even know that there were HD-DVD out on the market?!?! I have a chance to grab a Blu-Ray recorder in Japan but where the hell am I going to get the disc.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" warrants the high quality that HD-DVD gives.
- johnnybravoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I really really want there to be another Serenity or for some network to pick up Firefly.
What a great show that was. - Veloxi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this HD-DVD version have anything special about it other than it'll be on HD-DVD, like new featurettes or some such?
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Chronicles of Riddick and Serenity in high def? Mmmmm....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CoR, Apollo 13, and Serenity were all great movies. Don't hit on the first two, they were genuinely enjoyable...I love them both.
But its not true HD. Doubtful that HD-DVD can do 3+ hours of 1920x1080p. - ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Give me Alias Season 5 and you can have my cash. You know who you are.
- doxtorray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So far, no one has announced any HD titles on either Blu-ray or HD-DVD that I would pay a Jackson for. Also, has either camp specified pricing in these announcements?
- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dammit!! I jusst bought this on DVD! Curse those double-dipping studios!!
- jbrjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0xNaquada, are you sure the film wasn't shot in HD? Because I remember that last summer, Apple used the Serenity trailer to show off the H.264 codec. And they had it in 480p, 720p, and 1080p. I watched the 720--don't have the monitor rez to see 1080--and it looked pretty good. You could see the film grain (which i think is sorta intentional to give that old western feel, the same as on Firefly), but the effects looked great.
- KaZe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though I have Serenity on DVD, I'd get it on HD.
- seanraf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's worth a first-gen HD-DVD player in and of itself.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea what idiot thinks major productions don't have and use 1080p/i camera's? Even some amatuer movie makers that never get to the theater use 1080 if they are serious. But yea I can wait til we have a dual player. Oh wait isn't the ps3 dual?
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nope, the PS3 is blu-ray, but it can play current standard dvd formats.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i guess universal sees something in serenity. Maybe there is more to come....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh yeah baby..
Blu-ray goes down the drain! - spishak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope the HD release has a bit more extras, and better cover art.
- mxman420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I got to say is (^_^)P
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that is What I call a "Misleading headline". Serenity is just mentioned, and Not what the article is about.
Teaser, thats all...
Cyborg
NO - Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Given the price of HD-DVD players now that add on to the x-box 360 is looking better now. Not only is the 360 a video game system buy a viable alternitve for as an HD-DVD player.
- kali25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At this point the ONLY reason is to improve the DRM. So they better release all the geek movies on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray since we are the ones ripping them. Of course I give it about 1 year before the DRM is cracked. "Guess this mean I have to buy the White Album again"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Plan 9 from Outer Space" in HD format, that's the ticket.
- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better movies and no RIAAMPAA driven DRM are definitely a plus for HD-DVD.
- elfuego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't matter if it's a good movie. It doesn't matter if it was shot in HD. All that matters is that it's got an arguably over-obsessive fanbase who will buy anything remotely connected to Firefly. They'll make their 20 million off the sales of it and walk away.
Apollo 13 and Bourne are the only other titles that much pique my fancy... although seeing Kong in HD could be nice with a good enough system. - Zukunft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When Back to the Future goes to HD-DVD, I'll go.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well yea guess I meant movies recorded with 1080p are 1080p compliant film, and technically I don't think you can set 35mm to resolve at any max number of lines of resolution due to it being analog and not digital. So unless it is all done in digital you can zoom into film as much as you want but at some point the film will get blurry and will not provide that sharp crisp detailed look. But it is better to be blurry than pixellated, dunno what we are gonna do when films recorded directly on digital can no longer provide the resolution of the new standards beyond HD(aka the star wars sequels)
- MarkStrube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Generally, 35mm film resolves to approximately 3000x3000 pixels before there's absolutely no more detail you can get out of. Obviously this isn't applicable for all films, especially not older ones, but those are the general numbers... so 1080p (1920x1080) is getting close.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Only an idiot buys either one while they're fighting over the 'standard'.
