Tron sequel in the works
hollywoodreporter.com — Commercial director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to develop and direct "Tron," described as "the next chapter" of Disney's 1982 cult classic. Sean Bailey is producing via the Live Planet banner, as is Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film.

- wespadfield, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22It'll suck. Really. It will. Nobody wants it to suck, but it will. I don't want it to suck, either, but it will. We'll hang on to the glimmer of hope that it won't suck, but honestly, they'll mess it up. They always do. It's best just to leave Tron alone. Rather than a sequel, or a remake, or a 'Special Edition', I'd like to see the original Tron, re-released, on the big screen, in all it's 1982/Futuristic goodness---for a $5 ticket price. Would I pay $10? No way. Yes, I could buy the DVD, and watch it all I want, but I'd like to see it BIG. For $5. I bet it would make decent money for an opening weekend, even for 5 bucks.

but its still awesome....i'm sure someone knows what i mean.....
i like to think of Tron as a prequel to The Big Lebowski, it makes both of them that much cooler!- wespadfield, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yes, indeed. Tron is craptacular. I love it. No need to tamper with imperfection. And, yes, it is still awesome. I'm totally with you on all points. And, there you go, somebody already made a sequel. The Big Lebowski. I love that! But Tron2 would diminish the whole.
- Dhalsim007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17... End of Line.
- RollFizzlebeef, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yay for our side!
- aralls, on 10/10/2007, -13/+8Uh... it's like... did anyone see the movie 'Tron'?
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's a cult classic, meaning it wasn't initially very successful but developed a strong and lasting fan-base.
- aralls, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It was a line from the Simpsons. I was hoping for a long string of "no" answers. I guess if Diggers don't get it, I'm being too subtle.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Was it a line from a recent Simpson's? If not, I apologize for missing it.
- aralls, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No, an early one. From Wikipedia:
Tron was mentioned in The Simpsons in Treehouse of Horror VI, where Homer is taken into a 3D world. In a bid to explain where he was, he asked if anybody present in the room had ever heard of the film, only to receive a negative response from everyone (several from Chief Wiggum).

Why not try and create a new movie that has something to do with our current pop culture and maybe try and challenge us a little. Kind of like Tron did 25 years ago?- Curufir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Because that would result in a two hour film of someone listening to an iPod whilst texting L337-speak into an iPhone with their 250 pound ass hanging out of their pants as they drool over the thought of their super-size Big Mac and diet coke in front of a floor to ceiling mirror screaming "Goddamn, my generation is the coolest that ever lived."

- sremick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'd rather they made Tron 2 and have it suck than they make Neuromancer and have it suck.
- coyote1284, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0OH, JASUS YES! Though I agree with, sremick, I doubt "Neuromancer" made today could be as bad "Johnny Neumonic". Look at "Paycheck" and "A Scanner Darkly", both decent adapations of Phil K. Dick's stories IMHO.

There you had a bunch of well written, highly optimized programs fighting for limited system resources. Whereas what we have here? A bunch of crappy scripts written by 8 year-olds, trying to find reverse in a old Recognizer. This is not a worthy adversary.

- soot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Did anyone else play Tron 2.0 when it came out? I thought Monolith and Disney had penned that as the real 'sequel' to the film. Oh well.
This story needs more Jay Maynard. - insanebrain, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7stupid moneymakers. .. STOP ***** UP GREAT CLASSICS !!!
- DaFunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's going to be a very difficult task trying to match the look and feel of the first movie into the second. When the original was made those graphics were cutting edge and although pitiful by today's standards were breathtaking to moviegoers in the 80's. If you simply copy what the first one looked like, people will be upset, if you go overboard and use today's CG, people will also be upset. To me, it wasn't the story but the look and the feel of the first Tron movie that made it fun to watch. I'm not expecting an academy award winning story with the second, and I have doubts it'll be able to re-create the mood of the first.
Short version: the sheer newness and "cool" factor of CG in the 80's made Tron fun and pioneering. Tron 2 won't have that in its favor.- minigamer1896, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You never know. They may follow the same graphical output and have the whole movie rendered in 5 minutes or less, or they may go with the times (I dearly hope not).
- nine9six, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Ya with maya today u don't even need to render it to get the same mood lol. They could just spend all the time modeling some crazy immersive environment, with brilliant intricate details, and not stress about rendering time. I loved the overall simplicity of the geo-forms in the original, and hope they don't overdo the CG to an extent that competes with the current transformers...-.-
I agree with DaFunk that the story really isn't that crucial to a movie like Tron. The concept of being immersed in a computer world is really strong enough. No love triangles or any other bs needed ;P Just nail the mood and make a creative new environment that somehow feels believable, yet artificial.
- iblaine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm making a prediction...any motorcycle in this film will bear the name of a motorcycle brand such as Kawasaki or Harley. I don't want the movie to suck but odds are it will. Tron ended just fine and doesn't need a sequel. But surely Disney will make some coin off Tron II.
- CognitiveD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I wish they let John Lasseter do it instead of Kosinski...
Feel kinda bad for him if he's not involved..the guy have mentioned tron and his love for it (and desire to do a remake/sequel) in more or less every interview he has given.- DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Tron is directly responsible for John Lasseter's love for CGI.
He had a friend working on Tron, and had the privilege of seeing the light cycle renders appearing on a screen line by line as they were transmitted from a remote location. That's when he fell in love with 3d computer graphics and went to create Pixar.
- DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Tron is directly responsible for John Lasseter's love for CGI.
- splice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4i dunno about the rest of you all, but i have *really* fond memories of this movie growing up. still have a couple of the action figures and light cycles. and how badass were those arcade/intellivision/etc games, the disneyland ride, etc. lots of fond memories. the beauty of the original was cullen and bridges and the amazing visuals, but i think the best we can hope for here is that disney respects the cult appeal of the original... i have to hope for the best.
"I never should have written all those tank programs."- imtigger2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That section of the PeopleMover at Disneyland was the BEST.
"... you have escaped Tron's game grid for now user, but take heed... next time you may not fare so well."
Then, right after the Tron tunnels, your ride above Autopia gave you 2min 55seconds to smoke out, have some cocktails, or whatever, before entering the tunnel for CircleVision. :)- iamafatguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks for that bit of nostalgia.
- imtigger2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That section of the PeopleMover at Disneyland was the BEST.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Am I the only one that thinks they should remake Willow and The Neverending Story? I mean, good remakes that stick to the story, not really crappy ones...
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5not a chance - there's a reason why people love the originals. Thinking you can capture that affection with a remake is a huge mistake. It almost never works.
- imtigger2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Am I the only one that thinks they should remake Willow "
PECK PECK PECK!!
- bwayne1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"According to MovieWeb, '[screenwriter Lee] Sternthal said the new concept is that the computer programmer gets trapped in a cyberworld, so that the film can utilize the Internet.'"

In other words, we should be looking forward to "Tron: Journey to the Center of Buy.com". Lame, much? - realyst, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Oh no....I was thinking not even sequel happy Disney wouldn't touch Tron, seeing as it's vision of a cyber world was a child of the 70s, but alas, they gone and proved me wrong.
Tron ruled -back then- because it's amazing to look at and scenes like the light cycles had never been seen/done before. Who wants to see another movie where the guy gets stuck in a modern FPS? - Flashman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I hope the villain is DRM.
- Spamcan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Regardless of the quality of the movie this can only mean one thing, a massive marketing and product tie-in campaign. Anything that gets Tron out in HD faster is OK with me.
- boomshakalaka, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I love TRON and i hope to god this does NOT get made. no matter what they do they will ruin the film.
- mga911, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2No mention of Tron Guy yet? I'll fix that: http://www.tronguy.net/TRONcostume/
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -1/+1If the movie stars The Dude then I have hope.
- thephosphorbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Been waiting 25 years for this!!! One of my favourite childhood movies finally getting a sequel..
Now.. let's talk about that Super Fuzz sequel :) - lukedinan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i hope they use 70 million dollars to make it look exactly like the original - rotoscoped animations, and all. there was commentary on the tron dvd about how much work it took to make the movie look that way. hopefully computers will now just facilitate the process quickly. 10 years from now its going to be "cool" to make movies look like they were made in the 80's...special effects and all.
- yfguitarist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+080's movies (especially the effects) suck, for the most part. No one is going to think the 80s were cool.
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!
-bit- imtigger2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1is that all you say is YES?
- fjrodriguez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, I vote for the retro-cheesy special effects, too. Hey, I wonder how much it would cost to take things back to the "Star Trek" (the original TV show) special effects era, egg cartons and all?
- minigamer1896, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sadly, I can almost guarantee that MS will have part in this sequel.
- brada33928, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2there's a 68.71% chance you're right.
