- ness0013, on 11/13/2007, -1/+36I know it isn't a movie but I feel pretty strongly about mentioning Band of Brothers somewhere here.
- fant0m, on 11/13/2007, -3/+34I know a man who was a Green Beret in Vietnam. This dude was wicked. He had to live in the hills of Vietnam for a couple of years to prove to them he was trustworthy. He had to marry a 14 year old girl. He had to kill many people. He did a lot of things that haunt him to this day. When I asked if he watches any of the "shoot-em up" movies his response, and I quote:
"Son, I've lived through that. Those movies show you the gore, and that's what sells. It's one thing to watch it in a movie, and it's another thing to live it. The only war movie I will ever have respect for is Mel Gibson's 'We Were Soldiers'. It most accuratley described the events."
I asked him how he knew. He said:
"You know in the end of the movie where they call in the air strikes on the main battlefield? I was one of the 4 Berets watching from the hills calling them in, and telling the pilots where to hit."
I never forgot that.
Thank you to all who have served. - FishHammer, on 11/13/2007, -2/+26Saving Private Ryan is my all time favorite war movie as a stupid teenager with no war experience. Also the entire Band of Brothers series.
- Butros, on 11/13/2007, -2/+22Yeah I know it would have been so much cooler if master chief and arbiter came down and ran through the VC with laser swords and sticky grenades... you idiot.
- saunders45, on 11/13/2007, -0/+15Agreed Band of Brothers is my favorite movie/series of all times. My great grandfather was part of the 506th PIR 101 AB. Also, Black Hawk Down rules..
- timdawgg, on 11/13/2007, -0/+13Full Metal Jacket? - My dad is a Vietnam Vet. He loves it.
- daEvan, on 11/13/2007, -1/+11Enemy at the Gates, although not a super popular movie, is a personal favorite war movie of mine. Right after Saving Private Ryan
- Saea, on 11/13/2007, -3/+13Cool list, but I hate it when people glorify war, making it look like a glamour job. Watch "Grave of the Fireflies" and "Letter from Iwo Jima" after watching those. It exposes you to both sides of the same conflicts.
I'm not saying that I'm not supporting our veterans, because I'm in 100%^ support of them; I'm just not in support of making war look cool or okay. - cababika799, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10You son of a bitch! Please take your post, put it on some cardboard and head on down to the docks or an airstrip when combat hardened Marines make their way back to America after being in battle for a year.
I would say that they would tear you limb from dishonorable limb, but the crowd welcoming them would do it first.
The WW2/Vietnam/Korea heroes are deserving of some serious glory and their struggle definitely outweighs the current ones. But to say that veterans of today are less deserving of your respect is so arrogant of you.
Anyone who graduated from basic training is deserving of your respect because at least they made the attempt to serve our country which is more than anyone will ever be able to say about you.
History won't remember keyboard jockeys. - Butros, on 11/13/2007, -1/+11Soldiers don't make policy
- Caddis, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10The Longest Day: Up here in Canada, every time the history channel shows the movie, they show an interview with a vet who was there. He said that the only problem with the movie was that they showed people stopping for their buddies. He said that you couldn't stop because If you stopped you were dead - you had to leave your buddies behind. Adds an interesting perspective when you watch the movie. Also a nice tribute to a vet who has since passed away.
- Alpione, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7Fantastic series!
- Brian48216, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8Tell your father,
Thank you for your service. - Alpione, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6Clearly you're the naive one here...
- Pimptastic, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5As a Veteran of the last 20 years. I can say there is no greater respect that any current Veteran has for those that fought in WWII. We are lucky to be part of their legacy. Can I say I fought for freedoms and sacrificed as much as they did? Hell no. But I did do my part.
- MaxxDamage, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5I'm with you. I retired from the Air Force 3 years ago.
- EarlOfLade, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5Great day! Now we can go back and forget them for the other 364 days in a year.
Just what the veterans need, a day with big words and stupid movies. When you have taken care of your veterans and given them all the care and reeducation necessary for them to function in this society, you may have a point, until then, this day is just disgusting. - Kent4jmj, on 11/13/2007, -6/+10The Patriot and We Were Soldiers Once. Gibson can be pretty good somtimes.
The line in the patriot, I'm paraphrasing, about trading one tyrant 3,000 miles away for 3,000 elected ones a mile away is classic. - inactive, on 11/12/2007, -2/+6where is Kelly's Heroes?
- nullnvnvnv, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4Platoon and Apocalypse Now. Can't believe no-one's mentioned them yet.
- Pimptastic, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Ok, as a Veteran I do have my own list. Though I am one of those oddball Submarine Veterans, so my taste in movies is... well how shall we say, a bit biased =)
1. Down Periscope (I swear this was the crew I served with)
2. Midway
3. Tora Tora Tora.
4. Run Silent Run Deep
5. Operation Petticoat - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957)
God that movie was so off the bridge was not even on the kwai river. - Zera, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Agreed, I'm not a fan of many war movies, especially some of those listed, but Band of Brothers, I really feel is the greatest set of motion pictures ever made.
Band of Brothers > All Moves, TV, etc
Most War movies are about War. Band of Brothers is a War movie about People. - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+5Why should I agree to trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away?
Is the exact quote, and yeah, it's great. :) - cababika799, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3And who are you that you can say that? Where have you seen this done? What amazing state-side news program did you tune into that leaked this info?
Nobody who kills civilians is a hero. It's a shame when mistakes are made in the heat of it all. But nobody walks into groups of civilians and kills them for sport.
If at this point you plan on brining up an obscure time that it happened. Remember that it happened once, or perhaps twice in the history of the Corps and those men were met with force when they came back.
But to say all of us (Marines, I am one as well) are naive is a pathetic attempt to demoralize me and my brothers. As Alpione expressed, you are naive enough to think that by citing a tradgedy you are convicting us all of something.
But from this far away it's a bit hard to express how I really feel. If you aren't the puss I think you are, then please visit your local Marine base or recruiting office and let them know how you feel about them ok. - allan17, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3Letters from Iwo Jima and All Quiet on the Western Front are also great movies, told from the Japanese / German view.
- Neiby, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3So, you haven't actually watched Saving Private Ryan, have you?
- i208khonsu, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3Stripes?
- Urusai, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3I saw Midway recently. It does a decent job of showing the fog of war at a strategic level.
- screwzluse, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4I would have thrown We Were Soldiers. I found that a great movie. I recall seeing the movie on the Groton Naval Base in a packed theater of Naval men. It definitely was an experience (especially with the crack about the Navy guys). I definitely wasn't a big fan of the Patriot though.
- cababika799, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3This has nothing to do with his polotics...but movies have started to surface lately that depicts American military forces as being weak or evil. And it's terrible. He's simply expressing that Americans like movies in which their military is displayed in the heroic and virtuous light in which they have all served.
- jezsik, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I was really surprised not to see All Quiet on the Western Front. For years that movie was banned in many countries that were beating the war drums ... that says something about the message of the film.
- cababika799, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Not unfair! He didn't say that previous generations sacrificed more. He clearly states that he makes a toast to generations past and not a word for the present generations.
Of course the WW2 Generation sacrificed more. War was different. But for some do-nothing, nine to five hack such as "floatingpoints", he has no business saying that.
And if you think the military is about corporate policy and not about defending the nation, then you are sadly mistaken. Go see some USMC training sessions or combat excerises and tell me how much of that is for a corporation.
But you're a conspiracy theorist. The only conspiracy that is taking place is the media over the american public....but as long as Greenday says it, I suppose it's good enough for you right? - trigger119, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3Just wanted to say "thanks" to those co-opting the comments of a WORLD WAR II movie list to infect it with a rant against wars today. Hell I don't agree with the current administration/war but this has nothing to do with that...keep it on topic! Veterans of WWII deserve a hearty thank you, or maybe discuss other good war movies. you know, something on topic.
- Kent4jmj, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2God Bless Byles, its still a great line and I'm glad Gibson used it.
- jezsik, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2No "Das Boot"?
- norman619, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Movies are meant to entertain. The good ones entertain you WHILE teaching you about historical events as they happened minus Hollywood's political bias.
- Pimptastic, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Frankly I don't give a damn about that movie.
- kingcam, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for mentioning A Bridge Too Far; on of the most underrated war flicks around, and a must see for anyone interested in WW2 history. I would just like to recommend Das Boot to anyone interested in the Battle of the Atlantic (the second one) it is a great film that surely deserves to be on this or any other list of great war films.
- Pimptastic, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2well that is a special movie for April 11th. Even though it is without a doubt one of the greatest movies about WW2 subs, it is a U-boat. And as brave as those men were were, I like to be selfish and celebrate only US sub movies =)
- Kinsbane, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2+1 for Downfall. great movie.
- jezsik, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2The outtakes have two of the best scenes in the film. I'm sorry they didn't include them. The only thing that disappointed me about the film is the fact that it was unable to capture the total confusion of battling in the tall elephant grass.
- cababika799, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2I agree, Our fathers were incredible! (Sgt. USMC)
- zeejay, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2"I'm just not in support of making war look cool or okay."
You're right - movies shouldn't do that. That's the job of our government leadership and the media. - jbeardsl, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2/dug for former Marines and vets posting lists filled with good flicks. I've seen every one.
- cababika799, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2The truth is, that when people go to war it's horrific at times. The least we can do is glorify them when they return.
And to be honest, even though it may seem unfair, to humanize the enemy (if they are true enemies of the state) will serve nothing but demoralize our troops. Marines fight harder than any other military on the planet and the reason why they do is because their history is such that warriors are idolized. And that works out wonderfully because when our country goes to war you want the most men returning from it and the deadlier you are and the harder you fight (for whatever reason) the more likely you are to survive. - KhanneaSuntzu, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe hospitalization and heavy medication is in order.
- polyGone, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Blackhawk down?
- fant0m, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2I feel like an idiot for it, but I just caught it:
Thank you to all those who have served, and are CURRENTLY serving! Sorry - I didn't realize I did that. No need to digg up - just acknowledge the soldiers past and present. - boojoy, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone ever see the Devil's Brigade? It was a movie about the first Canadian/American brigade in WWII who apparently were awesome and did some cool stuff (like taking over small German towns by just stealth, without killing anyone). Only reason I've seen it is because my grandfather was in the Canadian side of brigade, but it was a pretty good movie. Pretty funny too - the Canadian and Americans do nothing but fight with each other for the first third.
