- davdev, on 11/12/2008, -2/+84The Green Mile?
- Fission, on 11/12/2008, -2/+34First, Stand by me should probably be #3 on the list. Second, I definitely think the #1 and #2 should be switched. The shining is a definite classic and an example in great movie making but The Shawshank Redemption is just LEGENDARY. The writing, directing, acting, and everything else just came together so perfectly into one of the greatest produced films in American history. There's a reason why people rated it as the best movie of all time on IMDB. Overall though, good job on the 5 picks.
- chadwalters23, on 11/12/2008, -4/+32 The Mist. You better recognize.
- bearbomb, on 11/12/2008, -0/+24Wait until the Dark Tower =)
- Foxprowl, on 11/11/2008, -0/+19I agree with the picks, but not where they're located. Stand By Me is an absolute gem and deserves at least the number 2 spot.
"No, Ace. Just you..." - inactive, on 11/12/2008, -0/+16The Dead Zone? I thought that was one of the better adaptations. And I can't believe that The Green Mile was not on the list.
- Handz2heaven, on 11/11/2008, -0/+16I think i agree with the list!! Although its sad to see that Christine didn't make it!!
- AmyVernon, on 11/11/2008, -0/+15When I saw Carrie at No. 5, I was like, "What?!?" And then I checked out the rest of the list and it was spot on. Forgot there are so many awesome King movies.
- analogkid01, on 11/12/2008, -0/+15"It" would've made it on the list if they'd included the gang-bang scene.
- leemac, on 11/12/2008, -1/+15Great list...kinda wished "It" would fit in there somewhere. That movie freaked me out.
- dncarlson, on 11/12/2008, -0/+14I honestly believe that if the Stand and IT were produced today, with quality writing and directors, each split into two movies (or one really long movie) they would trounce 95% of the garbage that comes out of Hollywood now-days. Keep the focus on the characters and their relationships, and ditch the cheap scares and terribly done giant spiders.
I would not only pay to see them in the theaters, I would buy the Blu-ray in support. Who's with me? - Vital8, on 11/12/2008, -0/+10heeeey, wait a minute-what about the Langoliers?
- TJMcWhiskers, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9Bart: "Don't you mean The Shining?"
Willy: "Shhh! What do you want to do? Get us sued??" - Dumbledorito, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9I like Jack Nicholson in the cinematic version, but I'm not a big fan of the script.
I like the "fleshing out" of the novel in the TV version, but it does suffer from, at times, reminding me that I'm seeing one of the stars from "Wings" trying to pull off a horror film. - pitchblack16, on 11/11/2008, -0/+8What about IT? That movie scared kids everywhere for days, not to mention a new found deathly fear in clowns for the rest of their lives.
- hokeywebb22, on 11/12/2008, -2/+10What? I love Stand By Me but no chance it is better then Shawshank or The Shining.
- dncarlson, on 11/12/2008, -0/+8If it wasn't for the terrible CGI, the movie would have made a much bigger impact I believe.
It's basically a really well done B Movie, and the ending is as anti-hollywood as they come.
Plus when Marcia Gay Harden (the crazy religious lady) gets a bullet in the head... I dare you to find a more primal and enjoyable scene of violence in any movie. - NathanielJ, on 11/12/2008, -0/+8I also really liked The Green Kilometer and Pet Graveyard.
- bicyclethief, on 11/12/2008, -2/+9I would swap The Shawshank Redemption with The Shining for #1.
- andreascliment, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7The Green Mile is one of the best movies ever and it should definitively be on this list!
- cobainirvana, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6I've read the book, never seen the movie. That book was absolutely wonderful though. I put it as his greatest single work. His greatest work I'd then say is the Dark Tower Series.
- bralynn, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6Yes. Yes, I do want to make out.
- Rudegar, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6the big spider in the end of the movie version was a fail though
- nathanwalker, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6There better be 7 movies, that's all I have to say.
- Nathrat, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5I was actually really surprised by this movie, I thought it would be terrible, but I ended up enjoying it.
- MachineMessiah, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Hahahaha, WHAT?! Didn't "Bev" go through enough?
- G0dspeed, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5I completely agree with you. Stanley Kubrick is one of favorite directors, but I thought Shinning was a little weak compared to his other movies (still a great movie though). Shawshank definitely deserves the #1 spot.
- diablo2032, on 11/12/2008, -1/+6WHERE IS ' IT '?..I cant believe ' IT ' didnt make the list. That movie scared the hell out of me as a child, I still enjoy it whenever it comes on tv, a true classic.
- EthylAdded, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Christine was way better than Misery. Of course, part of that was John Carpenter directing.
- mike5060, on 11/12/2008, -1/+6How could you not include "IT" ?
- Smokeydabear, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5No love for Maximum Overdrive...
- darkened, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Yes it was great, the effects while not mind blowing were very fitting.
- kiley481, on 11/12/2008, -2/+6Dreamcatcher ... Worst. Movie. Ever. It killed me that Morgan Freeman had anything to do with it.
- Zipko, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5I don't care for either film version of The Shinning. Neither one does the book justice. The atmosphere in that story is something that is easier conveyed when read, and didn't come across as well in picture.
- NathanielJ, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5Because not everyone has your exact taste in movies?
- bennjammin, on 11/12/2008, -2/+6Secret Window, Secret Garden
- david4041, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4"I mean, didn’t we have a Vice Presidential candidate that thought Africa was a country, not a continent?"
Don't we have a President-elect who thought the USA had 57 states?
Don't we have a Vice-President-elect who thought the FDR was Prez at the time of the crash and was on TV.
My point is that anyone can make gaffes. Even the messiah.
Give it a rest. The election is over. - nathanwalker, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4I thought the movie was at least half decent. Over acted, and they never should have shown any of the beast, but they did a good job with the character building and showing how quickly people break down under stress.
- Finalreminder, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4I love the Longoleers (sp?)
Most people I know think it's cack - astrotrain, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5No 'IT', no 'Christine', no 'Lawnmower Man', or even 'Maximum Overdrive (aka Trucks).???
- caulkrocket, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4What?! THE MANGLER didn't make the list?!
- dillhole, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Because it was too long and the second part was rubbish.
- lfrankow, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Dugg for the "Wings" reference. I agree. Spot on.
If they would have chosen nobodies who were great actors for the TV version, it could have been pulled off well.
It's next to impossible to accurately create the atmosphere of a book. It's impossible if you use people who are well-known character actors. - josephbloseph, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Needful things?
- lennybird, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Watched that movie when I was 6.
Scarred for life. - inactive, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3The ICE is gonna BREAK!!
- asgardshill, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3The Shawshank Redemption had to go and ruin the perfectly serviceable meme that all movies based on Stephen King works are utter crap. Damn that The Shawshank Redemption!
- oldhick, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4The Stanley Kubrick film wasn't supposed to be like the book. It was supposed to be Kubrick's interpretation of the book... He changes many of the theme's and I think ultimately it works brilliantly as a film.
The book focuses so much on Danny. The ghosts want Danny for his abilities... In the movie they switch the focus to Jack Torrance, the ghosts want Jack. Killing Danny and his wife will just help seal Jack's fate.
I have a hard time imagining a Shining movie shot any other way, and I still watch that flick once or twice a year. - Dumbledorito, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3I agree about the "nobodies." That was one of the strengths of the casting in "X-Files," where unknowns were picked for how well they fit the roles (which also made it scarier, I think).
The biggest problem with adapting King's work, though, seems to be the director/producer obsession with the monster rather than with the characters. Many horror monsters are ludicrous when examined closely, but if you care about their victims, having been given enough reason to root for their success or failure, the monster will take care of itself. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+3WAHHHHHHHHHHHH IM SOOOOOO SAD I HAVE BEEN DUGG DOWN.
It was a joke *****. A+++++++ for captain moron! -
