dugg. - gbarberi, on 11/29/2007, -1/+29Why wasn't Devil's Advocate on the list?
- Taorluath, on 11/29/2007, -2/+23To answer your question, anthrax or hiliary clinton naked.
- indyGuy, on 11/29/2007, -0/+20The trick is that they usually shoot late night or just after dawn, typically on weekends. While not a "deserted city scene", the finale in Blues Brothers involved tanks, choppers, tons of police cars, fire trucks, and hundreds of extras. How could you possibly shoot that in Chicago's Loop? Shoot Sunday morning.
- Bukowsky, on 11/29/2007, -5/+23the first time I saw Vanilla Sky.... i didn't like it at all. But then I watched it again a couple years later, and thought it was a great movie. Maybe the author just needs to watch it again to fully understand it...
- Sabakunoneji, on 11/29/2007, -3/+20What about the latest few Heroes episodes?
- nobody98, on 11/29/2007, -6/+21Vanilla sky is so underrated. Love that film
- pascal21, on 11/29/2007, -0/+14could you count the ghostbusters stay-puff scene?
'desserted city'
http://youtube.com/watch?v=X_loG8AQKtY - JacksonEMG, on 11/29/2007, -0/+14i would rather take the anthrax
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+11I prefer to think of it as the bottom 5 crowded city scenes
- Junel, on 11/29/2007, -2/+13More people saw Devils Advocate than Vanilla Sky, I'm not saying it deserves to be on the list, but it is definitely more popular than all of those films, excluding 28 Days Later.

"For the opening sequence, where Caitlin and Peter are walking through a deserted NYC, we went to downtown Los Angeles on a Sunday morning. You’d be surprised how many pedestrians there are in downtown L.A. on a Sunday at 8 a.m. Our assistant directors were (politely) herding dozens of people out of every shot, just as we rolled. The visual effects guys matted in some key New York buildings, and I think that it looks pretty good. One thing I’m happy about is that the second shot of the scene – the one where they walk down the street – is all allowed to be played out in one long continuous take. The director did other shots that covered the dialogue between Peter and Caitlin in closer angles, as they walked. But in the editing room, Tim Kring and Dennis Hammer felt that the one long take was more elegant and dramatic - and I agree." - Christbait, on 11/29/2007, -0/+928 Days Later at No. 1 and rightly so, I remember seeing those scenes for the first time and just thinking "How the *****..?"
- basic0, on 11/29/2007, -0/+7Vanilla Sky had it's moments, and overall was a good film, but I didn't like the ending and I get sick of Tom Cruise playing virtually the same character in every movie. Gee, I wonder if in his next film he'll play a rich, successful, handsome, arrogant jackass who goes through an unlikely set of events that changes his perspective on life and in the end makes him a better person. Come to think of it, maybe it's Cameron Crowe I'm sick of.
- tuh2, on 11/29/2007, -3/+9Probably just used a set.
- 3lijah, on 11/29/2007, -1/+6the scene in 28 days later was so good because it had Godspeed You! Black Emperor playing as the music. The song was East Hastings.
- julianrod, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4Watch "abre los ojos" and you'll see
- duggtodeath, on 11/29/2007, -4/+8You forgot to add the sarcasm tag, tonicboy :)
- Fatcheeseguy, on 11/29/2007, -3/+6I am Legend would be up there had it come out a few months earlier.
- krazykor, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4...what exactly did he forget?
- DarkPilot, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3It's definitely not a set. In the commentary on the 28 Days Later DVD it is mentioned that the hospital scenes were filmed at an NHS day hospital in Acton.
- indyGuy, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3This was a primary use for matte paintings in the old days. Same concept applies today with CG.
You'd be surprised, though, how often TV is just shot in the actual location - CG can be expensive. - NorthKorea, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3ill say it then, ya' puss. - it deserves to be on the list. Lomax comes out of the lobby, and it's quiet as a graveyard. Getting 12 blocks of lower Manhattan to look completely empty is a lot more impressive than the five pieces of ***** on this list.
- toekneebullard, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2That movie was terrible. Worst use of "Oh man, it was just a dream" ever.
- troycott, on 11/29/2007, -0/+228 Weeks later has some nice deserted shots too. Another film that didn't get much publicity.
- Hetman, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2I agree that is one of my favorite scenes. Did they use special effects to make it desolate.
- breily, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2I thought it was a great movie - but I've watched it 3 times and still don't think I understand it...
- adventflux, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Does anyone remember a movie called The Quiet Earth from the 80's?
- DivisibleByZero, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Kind of sad that they couldn't find a decent quality version of their number 1 pick.
- toekneebullard, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2It kinda was wasn't it?
- dmbchris, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2How can people forget "On the Beach". It has some great shots in San Francisco that are incredibly powerful. Not any fakes either, since it's from 1959.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053137/ - freezerburn819, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2yes.
- toekneebullard, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2It's critiqued badly because it cops out on the oddities in the movie. The whole time you're wondering what's going on, only to be told at the end the old, over used, "It was a ll a bad dream" line.
- saifatlast, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Man, if only there was a link to an article that explained how they actually did these scenes. Then we wouldn't have to sit here and speculate on how it was done. Ahh well though. I hear they used rabid bears to wipe out populations of small towns, and then made the newly-empty towns look like whatever city the film was set in.
- Tyrghast, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1talking about heroes in general, i love how the shots of odessa, tx aren't odessa at all.. especially the neighborhood scenes
- apeman300, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Great list. More dystopian future action: http://www.scene-stealers.com/top-10/top-ten-movie ...
- cwcentral, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1And all will be missing (taken down by DMCA notices) by the end of the day.
- raz98, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1yes, Quiet Earth should be on that list!
- jfelcans, on 11/29/2007, -3/+4"this remake of ‘open your eyes’ was largely disappointing" I loved vanilla sky, I don't see why it was critiqued so bad.
- AmICoolNow, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Thank you.
- XThunderStormX, on 11/29/2007, -2/+3IMHO, it appears that "I Am Legend" is going to completely own the ***** out of this list, digital or not.
- opticsnake, on 11/29/2007, -2/+3Lame list for not including the best deserted city movie from 1984: Night of the Comet
http://videodetective.com/titledetails.aspx?master ... - iguanapunk, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Dugg for No.1 as it's the only one I can relate to :P
- Tyrghast, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2no, it was so good because it was shot by a talented crew, not a band no one has heard about. if you like music making the mood though, look for flogging molly's songs in 'the departed'.
- roboticelephant, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Is the writer allergic to capital letters?
- troycott, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Was that in Sydney? I know that's an aussie film. Very good film, and pretty cutting edge animation for the time.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Dugg for 12 Monkeys period.
- bllambert, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1A great movie. I forgot about that scene. It was powerful.
- toekneebullard, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Bravo.
