There's also a full series called Blood+ that continues the story as well. Also from the sounds of it they ruin quite a bit of the original story, as I haven't seen it yet(the live action not the anime, which I have seen).

Nothing beats Gary Oldman as the count stabbing the cross with the sword and it spraying blood as he curses god(and the statue of mary holding jesus crying blood). Anthony hopkins as Van Helsing was classic as well. If keanu reeves and winona ryder were left out of it there would be no better movie for me in the world but even with them it is still the best vampire movie of all time.

Joss Whedon wrote the screenplay, and then the people who actually made the movie butchered it so badly that he felt that it needed to be completely re-done.
