- TobiasParker, on 09/25/2009, -5/+354"4. Star Wars: The Death Star’s slow attack - So the Death Star follows the tracking device on the Millennium Falcon to the rebel base. They jump out of light speed, and, for no clear reason, emerge on the far side of the planet Yavin from the moon where the base is. This light-speed jump takes a split-second, but now they have to wait minutes so they can clear the planet. ."
As i discussed in my refuting of the cracked.com article hyperspace in the star wars universe has a preset number of paths you can take. This is evidenced by Han Solo stating "Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star, or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it? " . So basically your end routes are limited, and since Yavin IV was on the far side of Yavin from the direction from which the death star approached they could not simply hyperspace around to the other side. This forced the Death Star to revolve around the planet Yavin, and being such a massive object its "conventional" engines moved it very slowly, unlike the Millennium Falcon which could simply 'zip' around to the other side.
On top of that it isn't really known how long the jump actually took, for the sake of brevity we skip immediately to Yavin IV, however it is never clearly stated how long it takes. Not to mention that the Millennium Falcon has time to land and everyone to go to the war room and ready their fighter jets almost before the Death Star even gets there.
"Not only that, but the Death Star is capable of blowing up entire planets, not just moons, so why don’t they just blow up the entire planet of Yavin? Surely that would effectively destroy anything on its moons as well"
Yavin was a gas giant which was dozens, if not hundreds, of times larger than the death star. Even if Tarkin could have blown up Yavin the resulting explosion and radiation would have destroyed the death star as well. - Foxprowl, on 09/25/2009, -9/+325I'd suggest the plot in District 9 as well. If a floating alien vessel landed over Johannesburg, does anybody really think the UN or the US would just let South Africa handle it? Wouldn't there be a massive movement to let a more developed nation handle the aliens? Yeah, that 'company' was hired to take care of them but I still refuse to believe First Contact will be in the hands of a small African nation, no matter the circumstances.
With that being said, FOOKIN' PRAWNS!! - inkubusfan, on 09/25/2009, -6/+219I mean, I like Star Wars too but....wow.
- geodebug, on 09/25/2009, -0/+205Submarines of that era did the vast majority of their travel on the surface and only dived when needed (attacking a destroyer, etc). They had two engines, one that ran on oil for surface travel and battery powered for diving. Since the sub was traveling to the Nazi island and not in battle there was no need for it to dive. Indy could safely ride the whole way on top of the sub (if not comfortably).

It was the 80's. Cocaine is a hell of a drug. - LarkStew, on 09/25/2009, -3/+128For the Independence Day virus, they do say that they've had the crashed ship for decades and learned loads about it, so it's possible they could have decoded the software and already knew how to infect it with a virus.
For Dr Ock's arms, they're purpose built for the fusion experiment, which is exactly what Harry was funding.
For Gremlins, I always assumed you couldn't feed them after midnight->before sunrise? - MothBoy, on 09/25/2009, -1/+116Jurassic Park:
1) If the Velociraptors are so increidbly dangerous, then why do you store them OUTSIDE of the massive security measures you devised to contain the rest of the dinosaurs, and instead put them near the visitor center?
2) Why did they decide to contain the dinosaurs primarily with a huge electric fence, on an island prone to large storms and power failures? - doctechnical, on 09/25/2009, -0/+1071) Didn't the animal control dude say the velociraptors were "testing the fences" on a regular basis? I was under the impression they WERE under the same security.
2) Do you have any idea how much it costs to make a glue trap that will hold a T-Rex? - carbonfilament, on 09/25/2009, -0/+105#2-Empire Strikes Back
First, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C3PO are heading off to rendezvous with the fleet - which should be clear because its stated in the movie several times, and its the location of the final scene in the movie.
Debate about length of the Jedi training aside, we KNOW it takes a long time for the Millenium Falcon to reach the cloud city because the hyperdrive is broken. This is also clear in the movie since its what one might call a major plot point. In fact EVERY SINGLE TIME the millenium falcon is on screen in that movie the fect that the hyperdrive is broken and they are trying to fix it is mentioned. - RealmDown, on 09/25/2009, -1/+1069. Raiders of the Lost Ark: Indy on the U-boat
This one doesn't belong on the list. IIRC, subs of that era traveled faster on the surface. Since they were doing a speed run, it would only submerge if it had to. Indy rolled the dice and won. - TobiasParker, on 09/25/2009, -1/+98I am a dork, it is a hobby.

I think the point was that John Hammond had such an arrogant belief in the power of technology that he didn't believe their failsafes could go wrong. - jamspt, on 09/25/2009, -2/+60Why does Ewe Boll keep getting to make movies?
Why did the constructacon have balls? - bmcnally, on 09/25/2009, -0/+57It's like seeding compost with worms - you want to have something to break down the garbage even further. I lean towards the explanation that some sort of scavenger/parasite does come preinstalled on industrial garbage compactors, but you never quite know exactly what you'll get.

- TobiasParker, on 09/25/2009, -0/+48All quotes from wookieepedia:
"The tractor beams aboard the Death Star I took energy from the main reactor, giving them a constant flow of power and making it impossible for a vessel caught in it to escape."
"One drawback of the original design was the power systems. Twenty-four hours were required to fully charge the laser."
It is reasonable to assume that while charging the laser to prepare for firing the ancillary systems such as tractor beams would be inoperable, especially while the station was under attack. On top of this, the fact that the laser was fired relatively recently in relation to the Battle of Yavin it would be reasonable to assume that power reserves were dwindling.
Also the TIE fighters were directed to handle the threat of the rebels, Turbo Laser batteries were not being used so it is also safe to assume tractor beams would be of limited use as well and probably were not accurate enough to hit such fast moving targets. "Very small craft with powerful engines could out-maneuver tractor beams if the ship's pilot was more cunning than the tractor beam operator or targeting computer."
Remember originally the Millennium Falcon had just come out of hyper space and was following the TIE fighter directly to the Death Star. Red and Gold squadrons i am sure were engaged in evasive maneuvers. - thinboyslim, on 09/25/2009, -0/+45image

If the machines in the Matrix feed humans themselves to make electricity, then how are they getting past the 1st Law of Thermodynamics? To create food, you need energy, then the energy comes from the humans, which helps to create food for the humans? (oh and also power the matrix and charge all of the robot batteries).

It's still taking a huge risk though, since the sub would dive if it saw any enemy ships on the way. - inactive, on 09/25/2009, -0/+42Not to mention that Luke DOESN'T complete his training. That point is made perfectly clear when he goes against Yoda and Obi Wan's wishes and goes to save his froends. At he end Yoda says his doesn't need any more training because Luke is obviously a "natural" and proved himself already.
- Elset, on 09/25/2009, -3/+40I don't know if you've ever built anything, but construction creates a lot of waste
- LastDawnofMan, on 09/25/2009, -0/+36'Cause John Hammond was a typical incompetent executive and he of course bought the system because he liked the electric fence vendor salesguy's style, and bought it over the objections of his tech staff. The same reason most businesses use bad products in the real world.

- vyhd, on 09/25/2009, -2/+3710. Independence Day: The computer virus
While this is still pretty grievous, given how much interoperability suffers even between OS versions (and let's not get started on libc), I thought the movie implied that our current technology was reverse-engineered from the captured alien craft. If the alien software was written for the purposes of compatibility with a wide range of binaries, or never had old software holes patched - which are both feasible, if not particularly likely - then this would actually be possible within that scope. - bcroghan, on 09/25/2009, -1/+35for some of this stuff, it sounds like the guy just didn't understand the movie
- Stevious, on 09/25/2009, -0/+3410. Independence Day: The computer virus
There can be only one explanation for this: It was the writer's lame-ass attempt at making a nod to War of the Worlds. In War of the Worlds, earth's virii/pathogens defeat the alien invaders. It was a cute idea as homage to War of the Worlds, to have a "computer virus" defeat the alien mothership. In practice, not that great an ending to an otherwise fun movie. - kanojo1969, on 09/25/2009, -6/+37Ignorance is bliss, huh? South Africa is not a 'small african nation', that's ridiculous. it's not Kenya or ***** Congo.
I actually agree that the UN most likely would have stepped in and organised a more politically correct way of dealing with the problem. But South Africa has a pretty decent sized economy, what you wrote is extremely dumb.
Second, @kolding, the movie isn't 'about' apartheid. Blomkamp (sp?) has said in multiple interviews that the movie is set in Joburg because that's where he's from and that's a world he knows. He has also said many times that this movie isn't about any kind of message, it's not supposed to make you think very much, it's an action movie expertly made.
Remember, this is the movie that got made because Halo was canned. Halo would have been similar to this, and if you think Halo would have been some preachy movie with a deep message then you're a fool.
The whole story about segregation, the camps, the ***** treatment of the prawns, it's all just setup for the story, it wouldn't have made any sense if they were all treated like kings and put up in the Joburg Hilton. - SkippyDoorknob, on 09/25/2009, -0/+30But the power didn't come on the crashed ship until the mother ship showed up. Plus they said that it's was Jeff Goldblum's decoding of their satellite signal that gave them the necessary insight into doing the opposite - putting a virus into their system.
- Aadain, on 09/25/2009, -0/+30Duh, that's the point of the movie.
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/25/2009, -0/+302) Do you have any idea how much it costs to make a glue trap that will hold a T-Rex?
The La Brea tar pits come to mind. - TheEggAndI, on 09/25/2009, -0/+29what bothered me about independence day wasnt the virus. it was the fact that at the end, they just grounded a couple dozen city-sized star ships, many that were hovering over major metropolitan areas throughout the world. did those crashes destroy those cities? what about all the people still stuck in the cities. did they die, or are they trapped underneath? sure they won it out for the greater good, but what about the little guy?
and this isnt much of an 'unanswered question' but regarding star wars : return of the jedi. after all the ewoks did to help the rebellion, you just know that the debris from the death star would rocket into endor, killing thousands of ewoks worldwide. - EllimistX, on 09/25/2009, -0/+28That deserves a submission itself.
- sodoh, on 09/25/2009, -1/+29Applying Occams razor, I think the more likely reason is there was a fridge on top of the conning tower he could climb into.
- kbrivas2011, on 09/25/2009, -1/+28Hmm. For the Star Trek one, I actually don't think that Spock was on the planet long at all before Kirk got there. And he probably spent most of his time running from massive ***** aliens, like Kirk did.
- cuby, on 09/25/2009, -0/+27the garbage monster union is pretty powerful. if local 238 says you need to install a garbage monster, then by golly, you install a garbage monster.

- geodebug, on 09/25/2009, -0/+26well, I suppose she knew enough to browse the folder structure to find the restart system (or whatever it ended up being - been awhile since I've watched it) program.
It is a great line though. I've heard it used as a sample in several songs. -
