Animal House - Bluto's (John Belushi) Inspiration Speech:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q47bpOCTcaY - nichiplechle, on 07/16/2009, -1/+10No.10 - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Coach Sean Porter in the Gridiron Gang
No, this movie about juvenile delinquents playing football wasn’t Oscar-caliber. But, yes, Gridiron Gang went heavy on formulaic speechmaking -- and The Rock gave a convincing pregame pitch:
“Now it’s time to see who has the heart. Now is the time to prove to yourselves and to everyone out there that even though you are locked up, you are somebody. You are worthy of something… Are you ready to go out there and take what’s yours? What you’ve worked hard for? Are you ready to accept the Mustang challenge?”
No.9 - Paul Newman
Reggie Dunlop in Slap Shot
Dunlop, played memorably by Newman, was the down-on-his-luck player/coach for the downtrodden Charleston Chiefs. With his team facing extinction, he unleashed the Hanson Brothers and took his team in a new direction.
This pregame chat helped fuel that conversion:
“It's their rink, it's their ice, and it's their f*ckin’ town. But tonight we got our fans with us! They spent their own dough to get here, and they came here to see us! All right, let's show 'em what we got, guys! Get out there on the ice and let 'em know you're there. Get that f*ckin’ stick in their side. Let 'em know you're there! Get that lumber in his teeth. Let 'em know you're there!”
No.8 - Tom Hanks
Manager Jimmy Duggan in A League of Their Own
Managing a team of women is not easy for an old-school baseball man. Hanks, playing manager Duggan, had to learn that skill on the fly.
One of the key moments came when he berated outfielder Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram): “Are you crying?” Hanks asked. “Are you crying? Are you crying? There's no crying, there's no crying in baseball!... Rogers Hornsby was my manager, and he called me a talking pile of pig sh*t! And that was when my parents drove all the way down from Michigan to see me play the game! And did I cry? NO! NO! And do you know why? Because there's no crying in baseball!”
No.7 - Charles S. Dutton
Fortune in Rudy
This story was true. Daniel E. “Rudy” Ruettiger (Sean Astin) was an under-size walk-on football player at Notre Dame. Due to NCAA lineup restrictions, he faced long odds to make it on the field.
He nearly gave up on that quest. Dutton, playing a facilities manager named “Fortune,” set him straight:
“You're five-feet nothin', 100 and nothin' and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for two years. And you're also gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody accept yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen. Now go on back.”
No.6 - Denzel Washington
Coach Boone in Remember the Titans
When a black high school merged with a white school in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the football teams also merged. Coach Boone, played by Washington, had the unenviable task of bringing the team together.
To that end, he took the team to the Gettysburg battleground to make a point. “Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting amongst ourselves today,” Washington said. “This green field right here, painted red, bubblin' with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don't care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other. And maybe, I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men.”
No.5 - Billy Bob Thornton
Coach Gary Gaines in Friday Night Lights
Football at Odessa, Texas' Permian High School is not like football at most schools. This movie -- based on a nonfiction book -- explored themes much larger than sports.
So Gaines was more than a coach.
“Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn't let them down, because you told them the truth,” Thornton told his team. “And that truth is that you did everything that you could. There wasn't one more thing that you could've done. Can you live in that moment, as best you can, with clear eyes and love in your heart? With joy in your heart? If you can do that, gentlemen, then you're perfect.”
No.4 - Pat O’Brien
Knute Rockne in Knute Rockne, All-American
The mother of all pep talks was Rockne’s “Win one for the Gipper” address at Notre Dame. O’Brien, playing an elderly Rockne, implored his team to honor the memory of the late George Gipp.
“Now, I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years,” O’Brien said. “None of you ever knew George Gipp. He was long before your time, but you all know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame. And the last thing he said to me, 'Rock,' he said, 'sometime when the team is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock,' he said, 'but I'll know about it and I'll be happy.’”
No.3 - Gene Hackman
Coach Norman Dale in Hoosiers
Take a true story about an underdog high school basketball, mix in a complex coaching character seeking redemption and you have sports movie magic.
At the regional finals, Hackman, playing Dale, made a simple but compelling address:
“There's a tradition in tournament play to not talk about the next step until you've climbed the one in front of you. I'm sure going to the State Finals is beyond your wildest dreams, so let's just keep it right there. Forget about the crowds, the size of the school, their fancy uniforms, and remember what got you here. Focus on the fundamentals that we've gone over time and time again. And most important, don't get caught up thinking about winning or losing this game. If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be, I don't care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, in my book, we're gonna be winners.”
No.2 - Al Pacino
Coach Tony D’Amato in Any Given Sunday
Oliver Stone went over the top with his “expose” of pro football. So Pacino’s character, D’Amato, was prone to excesses.
But Pacino was believable while rallying the Miami Sharks. “You find out life's this game of inches, so is football,” he said. “The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team, we fight for that inch. On this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches, that's gonna make the f*ckin’ difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!”
No.1 - Kurt Russell
Herb Brooks in Miracle
When the U.S. Olympic hockey team toppled the vaunted Russians in Lake Placid, NY, it scored one of the great sports upsets ever.
The Soviet team featured seasoned pro-caliber players. The U.S. squad featured amateurs from the college ranks.
Yet Brooks inspired them to win. Russell captured the essence of his famous pep talk:
“Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here tonight, boys. That’s what you have earned here tonight. One game. If we played ‘em 10 times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with 'em. Tonight, we stay with 'em, and we shut them down because we can! Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players, every one of you. You were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done; it’s over. I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ‘em. This is your time! Now go out there and take it!” - serif69, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8How the hell does this not include James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams? It may not be the most high-energy pep talk, but it's certainly one of the best:
Ray. People will come, Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They’ll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. “Of course, we won't mind if you look around,” you'll say, “It’s only $20 per person.” They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk out to the bleachers; sit in their shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines—where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they’ll watch the game and it’ll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game; it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh, people will come Ray. People will most definitely come. - Vapor17, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5#7 Rudy. They spelled "except" wrong.
FTA: "In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody accept yourself" - porscheblack, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4What about the Pele speech from Vision Quest? I know it's not a well known movie, but it was a pretty good motivational speech that didn't seem forced. Or what about Christopher Walken's lions speech in Poolhall Junkies. Give some love to the little guys.
- joefearnley, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Bleed all over 'em, let know you're there!

- Willow01, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4What no Van Wilder Basketball speech?
- theAzone, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I often heard the Rudy speech myself, except the person giving it to me always stopped after “You're five-feet nothin', 100 and nothin' and you have barely a speck of athletic ability."
- Willow01, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3This ball club is the heart of this institution. You win, it beats. You lose, it breaks. You're not boxing out, Big Papa. You're my Windex man.I want you shining glass. We gotta D up out there. Darius, I want you all over that ball like a fat kid on a cupcake.
What are you looking at? Your mom said you left your legs at home....For God's sake! I'd do anything for you guys...which is why I'm throwing you a little soiree tomorrow night..but not without a W tonight.
You want to know why? Nobody wants to celebrate a loss, guys.
Hey, man, you gonna invite those freak honeys from Mt. Holyoke?
I already did...They said they'd try to make it if they weren't humping the Matadors.
- The Matadors?
- What?
Come on.
We got a ball game to win. - ShiftyBizniss, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Is anyone surprised that No.1 is Team U.S.A's "miracle on ice" ?
It could have been the worst acted, worst directed scene ever and would still have been #1. - MatlasK, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Believe in the ball, and throw yourself!
- MatlasK, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3I know it isn't a sports movie, but no pep talk of any kind can top Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross. Period.
***** you, that's what my name is! - jimonastick, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I prefer the pep talk from the player "Preacher" in halftime of the championship in Friday Night Lights..
- boardthis, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2the rock? really? i would have to go with the lollygagging into the shower speech from bull durham over that one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLMl0CLIDLg
- Awwzm, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3We'll do it for Johnny!
Yeah. I know, I know. Not a sports movie. - Awwzm, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2That's not really a pep talk. It's more of a 'you guys ***** suck at your jobs' talk.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2maybe he was trying to say:
"In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody. Accept yourself" - alamedaman, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2anything from NBC's friday night lights. Kyle Chandler FTW.
- BulkVanderhuge, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2No love for Bill Murray's speech from Meatballs?
Morty: Hey, gang, come on! Look it, just `cause we're losing doesn't mean it's all over.
Phil: Cut the crap, Morty. I mean, the Mohawks have beaten us the last 12 years, they're gonna beat us again.
Tripper: That’s just the attitude we don’t need, Phil. Sure, Mohawk has beaten us 12 years in a row. Sure, they’re terrific athletes. They’ve got the best equipment that money can buy. Hell, every team they’re sending over here has their own personal masseuse. Not masseur. Masseuse. But, it doesn’t matter. Do you know that every Mohawk competitor has electrocardiogram, blood and urine tests every 48 hours to see if there’s any change in his physical condition. Do you know that they use the most sophisticated training methods from the Soviet Union, East and West Germany, and the newest Olympic power, Trinidad Tobago. But, it doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t matter! I tell you it just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter!
The group: IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER! IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER...
Tripper: And even...and even if we win...if we win... Ha! Even if we win. Even if we play so far over our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days. Even if God in Heaven above comes down and points His hand at our side of the field. Even if everyman woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win. It just wouldn’t matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guy from Mohawk cause they’ve got all the money. It just doesn’t matter if we win or we lose. It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn't matter! - sibernetik, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2"Anyone ever tell you that you look like a penis with a little hat on?"

- MrRoberts11, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2I once saw "Any Given Sunday" at the top of a All time best sports movie list and even though I had seen it, I was shocked. I went out and watched it a few more times and It really is a GREAT sports movie. Best all time? Not in my book. 2nd best sports speech? Can you argue with Al Pacino?
- kingofinternet, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1that wasn't a pep talk either.

- ZebZ, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0I was very pleasantly surprised that Miracle was as good of a movie as it was. It was cheesy, but not too much so. And considering the majority of the "team" was chosen for the skating ability rather than their acting ability, they did a damn fine job.
