I did. Nobody laughed. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -95/+196Pirates 3 was full of blurred and incoherent speech. The story was difficult to follow. The heroes and villains changed so many times I didn't know who to applaud. The characters have died and come back to life so many times that I felt a new storyline was needed.
It had a number of gross, unnecessary scenes like closeups of tongues, taking out brains and licking them--they brought things down to a new, degraded level.
If you still feel compelled to watch it, wait and rent it from the video store. - titlesaysitall, on 10/11/2007, -14/+104I was so dissapointed out of one part. When Elizabeth said "This is madness!" no one stood up and yelled "THIS IS SPARTA!" Otherwise it was an awesome movie, I liked how when Jack was in Davey Jones' Locker and he couldn't get rid of the rock but it turned out to be a bunch of crabs. Oh and any Disney film that shows anyone get headshot (like right in the first 20 minutes when the Brits invade the Singapore hot tubs) gets an A+ in my book.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -12/+100It was cool for one thing, epic battles. I still want to know what happened to that goddess that they unleashed. All she did was get big, disappear into the water, and make a big whirlpool.

>.> - retral, on 10/11/2007, -12/+96There were some pretty funny parts:
Seeing Davey Jones standing in a bucket of water.
The part where they shot the monkey out of the cannon.
Jack's compass pointing at rum.
Overall it was an awesome movie as expected. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/11/2007, -8/+90SPOILERS AHEAD:
As a huge fan of special effects I gotta say I was greatly impressed by the amazing special effects in this movie. The part where the endeavor sinks and the captain is walking down the ship with pieces flying everywhere looked amazingly real. It was very hard to draw the line between CG and live action. However, this movie lacked the witty dialog that made the other 2 a huge hit. Frankly there was too much crap about pirate lords and sea goddesses and not enough Jack Sparrow. Sparrow simply didn't shine in the same way he did in the first 2 and that was a huge disappointment. So if the wittyness of pirates 1 and 2 is what you liked about them then you might feel underwhelmed with pirates 3. However if it was the action you fell in love with then pirates 3 has plenty of it.
Also wtf was up with just tossing in Jack's father out of no where. I mean come on... if you are going to introduce the father of the most interesting character in the series then at least give him more than a few lines of boring dialog. Jack's father seemed like a half assed idea that should have been canned but never was. - maiku00, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51 Geoffrey Rush as Barbosa is the ***** DEFINITION of pirate.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -31/+76***** you guys, I watched all 3 and thoroughly enjoyed them all. This was one of the top trilogies in my book (no, the Matrix trilogy is not in my book at all). It wrapped everything up nicely. The cast did an amazing job, and the special effects were top notch.
Stop being overly critical movie nerds. This was never intended to be a Francis Ford Copolla or Martin Scorcese flick. It was a Jerry Bruckheimer summer blockbuster series. Accept it as that and judge it accordingly.
P.S. If you missed it after the credits finished: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usiCUZxrI-M&NR=1
Isn't that the same kid that got hung at the beginning? - kylesellers, on 10/11/2007, -7/+37Wow, I really liked the movie. It was intense throughout the entire film--no spots for a bathroom break during a 3 hour movie would be my only complaint!
It's not going to change anyones life, provoke intellectual debate, or stimulate chance in the way people think about the world, but it was a good fun movie. And it's been a LONG time since we had a good, fun movie. - cquinnd, on 10/11/2007, -8/+34I loved the the wittyness of pirates 1 and 2, and found pirates 3 to be their equal. The big difference is I didn't need to depend on Jack Sparrow to be the only witty character, with Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, Capt Barbarossa, Davy Jones, and the rest of the Black Pearl crew having enough exposure from the previous two films to be able to stand out without absolutely needing Jack Sparrow as either comic relief or a dramatic figure.
@readthis
The only incoherent speech I detected was from the character of Tia Dalma, and that was more from the clash of the thick creole accent with the other more British/English voices of the other characters, than of not being able to hear what was said.
If you thought that story was difficult to follow, you must have hated the LOTR trilogy. Then again, I watched the DVD of Dead Man's chest the day before seeing Pirates 3, so maybe the events were fresher in my mind... But I was also able to follow the third film in the Back to the Future series a year after seeing the second movie and not lose my place.
There was only one real villian among the main characters, everyone else was just "choosing sides".
Only two people had "died and come back" early in the film, and by the end that was not much changed; there was even a passage or two in the dialog that dealt with it, but you may have missed that part of the storyline.
From the very beginning of the movie, it was obvious this sequel was meant to show a more grown-up side to the whole story they had been telling from the beginning. Perhaps that message got lost for some people among all the "special effects"; but some of us could ignore the special effects and still concentrate on the human effects instead. - Fooord, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25This is madness...
THIS IS POLITICS! - davecor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Cap'n Jack calling Will a "Yeasty codpiece" was worth the price of admission alone.
- gamemaster357, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21"More pirates equals more badassery"
- whinub, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24And to think most people didn't get to see the FULL ending which meant staying after the credits to see a fast-forward ten years.
- realyst, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23I liked this movie. Yes, it had flaws, but it was -enjoyable-. It concluded well, had wicked awesome battles, had Barbossa('nuf said), still had good wit(stop complaining it didn't have all the jokes of the first one, it still had many, and they were funny).
People take too much time straining to find a reason to complain(and I'm sure many can be found in any goddamn movie). Yet not enough time suspending your beliefs and enjoying the bloody movie. Stop looking for things to complain about so to increase your 'uber-l33tness' or whatever you call ego-masturbation these days, and enjoy the movie for what it is: a thrill ride. You'll have much more fun and waste much less money that way.
It doesn't have to be smart or even make sense to be enjoyable. It just has to take the audience for a ride. This movie did so. Everyone in the theatre was cheering, even clapping at the end. I heard cries of "Ooohhhh!!" and "Aww!"(mostly for the monkey), and "AAhhhh!". I felt people jump up in their seats. People laughed("Is she not a woman with fury of which hell hath no?"). I did what it was supposed to.
Lighten up, people. - NeoCortex, on 10/11/2007, -17/+34I saw this move yesterday, and I'll agree that it was a decent popcorn flick. I wouldn't give it much more than that, though. The movie was flatout too long. I could think of several scenes that could have been trimmed down significantly, Capt. Jack in Davey Jones' Locker for one. And seriously, how many double-crosses does it take before I no longer give a ***** about anybody's intentions anymore.
Overall, I enjoyed the film, but I won't be looking back on this one in a few years and thinking it was one of the great summer movies I've seen. - WalkerBurgin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20Regardless of what anybody says about the 'artistic quality' of the film, I enjoyed every minute of it and almost fell out of my seat laughing (especially at the monkey)... so it gets two thumbs up from me.
On a separate note, I love how they didn't take the easy way out and end with a 'happily ever after' ending. - realyst, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15They altered his face?
I thought he just stumbled in, picked up a few articles of clothing and plumped down with his guitar in the seat, unawares of there actually being any filming taking place;) - Nick519, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18i can't believe people are actually saying they were BORED watching this movie. WTF sort of ADD-afflicted society do we have here? there's stuff happening almost every minute of this movie, and the entire last HOUR is a massive battle, and still people say they are bored?? unbelievable. i thought this was a great 3rd part that nicely tied up all the ends in a way that held some surprises. i loved the convoluted, opportunistic back-dealings that everyone dealt in, and it all pays off nicely in the end. i only have two problems with this movie:
1) calypso -- i mean, she didn't deal out any vengeance OR grant barbossa's request, so... why have her? and
2) keith richards -- the dude's a walking cadaver -- he could barely mumble out his lines. painful.
but everything else totally makes up for it. barbossa kicks all sorts of ass, davey jones was just amazing, sparrow is always a hoot, and i found myself even rooting for elizabeth & will turner. the sinking of the endeavor was epic. the dead souls in their litte boats was a nice touch. and the international cabal of pirates was awesome. - skitboxkilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Having successfully managed to miss the whole franchise, I was offered free tickets to the see latest episode just ahead of the public release. With an open mind (and a couple of nights to go), I watched all three films over three consecutive evenings.
I thoroughly enjoyed the continuity, the ever-changing 'hero of the minute', and the general feel of the series. Most of all; I sensed the strength lies in the openness through which the films each end. Here's a trilogy which beckons at least one more episode, with the potential to offer both prequel's and sequels without undermining it's very essence.
Whether hardened film fans choose to welcome or undermine the trilogy, it's light-hearted, well made, and put's the fun back in film. The only question I have for the make-up department is: was there really a need to alter Keith Richard's face? - realyst, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22You can't be serious...
- djphatjive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19I thought bloom acted well. everyone did. I actually thought knightly was out of place. Way to hot to be a pirate.
- WalkerBurgin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16What part of only getting to see your wife once every ten years is happily ever after? That sounds a bit like hell to me... not to mention missing your son growing up. Past that, Sparrow once again looses the Black Pearl...
It's not a sad ending by any means though. In my mind it leaves the perfect amount up to the imagination. It wraps up the story without completely closing the book on the characters lives. - dooms13, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16I liked POTC 3 better than the other two movies. Now having said that... Maybe it was just the company I watched it with, but for the most part, I felt that POTC 3 had better dialog, more humor, more interesting characters, better CGI, and allowed for some closure (Altho it left a lot open-ended). The first film is still probably my favorite just because of the banter between Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp, but the third is definitely coming close to topping it. I will need to see it again to make a good judgment. The second film I thought was pitifully weak. I knew it was just a filler to move the series along, but I was still disappointed.
- random19, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14@Gdietz
No, she just never says anything unless its through a clenched jaw. Because she's angry at everything.
But I suppose if you like pigeon-holed characters like that then yeah, you'll like the movie. - spidoman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I stayed and was expecting something good. But was given something unimportant that I had already assumed.
- realyst, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11@Moosetrail
Chow wasn't bad, but his role was pretty short, bordering on cameo. Mostly a few lines at the start and mid points of the movie. Certainly ain't gonna be the highlight of his movie career. - Alyy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17I really enjoyed the movie.. and I don't think they should of done it any other way. People say it's to complex and people swapping sides all the times.. they are pirates! Pirates don't follow rules, they do whats best for them! People also have to remember it's a Disney film.
I think anyone who can really see the movie for what it really is should really enjoy it. - cquinnd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12>> Calypso, the wedding on the boat, jacks schizo. None of those were prefaced in the other movies at all.
(Spoiler warning for Pirates 2)
Tia Dalma gave Jack his compass, was not bothered by the monkey, and knew more about Davy Jones and the curse than even the best "seer" character should have been expected to know. And that's not counting the re-appearrance of Barbarossa.
Pirates 2 started with the interrupted Wedding Day of Will and Elizabeth, in a long drawn out scene that made it obvious this was a lose end that would have to be addressed later in the story.
Everyone who met Jack in the first two movies would have thought (and said) that he was a little crazy. He never needed to talk to himself, because he was always responding to situations other tried to create around him. That we never saw it coming to the full extent that madness and solitude could bring him, should be considered a good thing for a movie where so many other ideas (resueing Jack, defeating Davy Jones, and foiling Beckett's plans) were obvious in where the story would have to go - shpider, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I think that most audiences these days want a movie with giant effects.... big booms.... and to turn their brain off the second their butt hits the theater chair. This movie required you to pay attention... Watch the characters for their deceptions and true motivations... If you pay attention and are able to follow the twists, deceptions and negotiations, the movie is great... I'm happy for a movie that didn't dumb down the script for an audience that expects to be force-fed every little detail... or sacrifice the story for a blander version...
- mrex9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@ghost116: really? I must have missed that.
Either way, solid ending. Will and Elizabeth (apparently) finally get to be together, and the story of Jack, Barbosa, and the Black Pearl comes full-circle: they're all right back where they were at the start of Pirates 1. Barbosa has the Pearl (probably sailing off to get cursed again) and Jack is on his own with only a dinghy once again. Great setup for a 4th movie should they decide to make one in the distant future... - realyst, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12User reviews tracked at 80%
I trust those more. I'm a user, not a 'critic' (and all the elitism that entails). - pujolsthebeast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The Fountain of Youth thing at the end seems to point to a sequel to me. Then again, I left to early, and missed the thing after the credits.
- cquinnd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Calypso's "vengance" was appropriate for the plot twists though. She still loved Davy Jones, and would have taken revenge on the Pirates who bound her in human form, but at the same time the Pirates were the ones to set her free, and she had just found out it was Davy Jones who gave them the information to bind her in the first place.
Her revenge appeared in the form of the maelstrom that was supposed to destroy both the Black Pearl and The Flying Dutchman, and they probably didn't try to show a larger storm attacking the other ships for the same reason they didn't show a large scale battle between all the Pirate ships and the British Armada. - Enixyle, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12You know it sucks when someone has to compile a list to convince everyone otherwise.
- pyro116, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7And let's not forget, that's what Pirates is all about (and was about) after all... ridiculous plot twists, shaky and constnatly shifting alliances, and backstabbing! Yarr! ;)
- PureHeretic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I loved how the movie was 2 times more violent than the last two movies :D
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8It's NOT an awesome video.
Don't bother clicking the link. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7After 3 hours of waiting for this beast to wrap up, who in hell wants
to wait through the long assed credits to see more stuff?
My bladder was about explode. - KublaKhan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I thought it was badass for the most part - but not as badass as "The Curse of the Black Pearl". I found myself feeling awkward when the movie occasionally slipped and got "cute". I'm guessing the younger audience prob. didn't notice this, but I sure did (as any cold blooded pirate should). Most of the awkwardness was when they tried to pass Keira off as manly again... (spoilers: what's with the weird Johnny Depp imitation when she's taking off her guns for the Chinese pirates... and with the weird scene were Orlando is fondling her legs and she's smiling in pleasure - that's just weird... not pirate like conduct at all!)
All in all it's way better than the second - which they could have just skipped altogether - but not as good as the first/original. - realyst, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I thoroughly enjoyed all parts prior to the 45 minute battle-a-thon as well. The writing was well done, the imagery was insane(at least now you know why it's called the Town of Shipwreck), it was like watching a fantasy novel come alife. Like the marine version of LoTR. The surealness of the Locker was cool too. And even more cool was the awesome way they got out of it(won't spoil it, sorry fellers)
The humorous and awkward moments of Barbossa and Sparrow -sharing- the Black Peal were good as well. The havoc caused by the Dutchman as it destroyed ship after ship. The setups for the battles to come.
And yes, there were plot twists. Perhaps too many. But they did logically follow each other. But they did add a bit of cranium to something that I'm sure, in their absence, would have then been critiqued for being too dumbed down(you can't win with critics unless the movie plays like the last 30 mins of 2001 Space Odysee, apparently).
To me, it's just as likely that you saw the last 45 minutes, were awed, then forgot about the 2 hours and 15 mins that came before it and thought, "Well, they must have sucked." - Bega, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5the ARRR contest (what are you doing vs whaT ARRRRE you doing) was awesome.
- drafhk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@readthis: I don't really know what you're talking about when you say it was unintelligible. The plot really made a lot of sense and wasn't that hard to follow. The dialog was brilliant ("Of she who's fury hell hath no!"), and engaging. So I really don't think you can criticize the movie for that.
What I would criticize, however, was the ending. While it tied up plot lines logically, it was somewhat disappointing and bittersweet. The Pirates series has never seemed to take itself incredibly seriously, and as such I didn't think that kind of ending was completely necessary or called for. Movies like The Lord of the Rings can get away with that because they take themselves very seriously and do it well.
Overall, the movie to me was very enjoyable. I'm not going to chalk it up as one of the top 10 (or top 100 for that matter) films of all time, but it's definitely worth seeing, and somewhat necessary if you've already seen the first two. - Moosetrail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@realyst
Im looking forward to seeing Chow yun fat who is one of the most underrated actors on the silver screen. What did you think of him in the film? Was his part interesting? He really is a superior actor, how did everyone else measure up?? - smellmyballs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10ONE REASON WHY PIRATES 3 SUCKED: They hyped all this Calypso ***** to have it come to completely NOTHING in the end. What was the point of her being in the storyline?
- duniyadnd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5There was some reports that she had to use a "foot double" because her feet were ugly up close...
- ghost116, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6actually, the curse is broken so will doesnt have to be on the dutchman anymore since elizabeth was faithful to him for 10 years. this happened after the credits
