- Niightwitch, on 02/20/2008, -11/+43The Lord of the Rings trilogy is only a couple of years old. How can you say they've "stood the test of time" when no time has passed?
- diggerbez, on 02/20/2008, -3/+18List:
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
9. All About Eve
8. Midnight Cowboy
7. Unforgiven
6. West Side Story
5. Annie Hall
4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
3. The Godfather
2. Lawrence of Arabia
1. Casablanca - birdly, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13I hear you!
I saw Casablanca as a teenager and didn't think much of it, but saw it again recently. Twenty five years later I wholeheartedly agree that it's the greatest movie of all time.
When I was young, I hated the ending. I wanted Bogie and Ingrid to be together. I didn't fully grasp the political implications. As an old fart, I now see that politics should trump love (at least in this case) because humanity's greater good is more important.
The bravery of Rick as he tells Ilsa to leave at the end is one of the greatest moments I've ever seen in a movie. It's amazing to me that I didn't appreciate it when I was young. Try it again in twenty five years, and I bet you'll love it. - inactive, on 02/20/2008, -5/+16Gone with The Wind and Ben Hur instead of All About Eve or Midnight Cowboy.
- whatthefu, on 02/20/2008, -2/+12This same site said it was strange that Star Wars got beaten out by Annie Hall for best picture.
- rejectnation, on 02/20/2008, -1/+11Read the article... It is "The Ten Best Oscar Best Pictures Of All Time"
- zoxx, on 02/20/2008, -0/+8Holy crap does Jack Nicholson look young...
- quomen, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7I think it's just a matter of taste. I'm 20 (is that young/old?), and Casablanca is one of my favorite movies of all time. There are so many wonderful quotes in the movie that i've heard before watching the movie, then I saw the movie and it's like wow this movie made them all. It's kindve like Godfather. Amazing writing.
- suinmind, on 02/20/2008, -2/+9#1 Getting an Oscar doesn't imply it is THE BEST movie of that year.
#2 Some know-it-all "experts" always think his opinions are superior. - inactive, on 02/20/2008, -3/+10nice comment!
- bonjourmr, on 04/25/2008, -3/+10Casablanca is well placed even by todays standards...not that there are m/any standards left today.
- Hoogs, on 02/20/2008, -12/+18I recently saw Casablanca in my film viewing class, and I didn't think it was that good at all. What do people see in it? However, I really liked One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Jack Nicholson at his best.
- jakobmakob, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6The writing is absolutely brilliant. If you compare it to other films of its time, it holds your attention extremely well throughout, which many other films of the same period fail to do. The acting was also outstanding, and the story was top notch. Casablanca was the first to do techniques in the story that are considered normal today.
- Drkboarder, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6If you're going to put a newer film on there, why not Schindler's List or Braveheart. LOTR is not better than Schindler's List, not even close, and Braveheart used actual people in battle. Not a bunch of CG. Give the directing of that some major credit. But whatever, digg me down because I'm hating on LOTR.
- Syric, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5Speak for yourself man. They thrill me every time.
- elizabethb221, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5All About Eve!
I love Bette Davis.
I'm really glad that it made the list. - MutatedNantuko, on 02/20/2008, -0/+4You win at movies. That, and Ilsa was hot as hell.
- TinternAbbot, on 02/20/2008, -0/+4What would your list look like?
- ben_nushmut, on 02/20/2008, -0/+4Believe it or not, Kane didn't win Best Picture, only Best Screenplay (its only Oscar). Thus, it can't be on this list. Unfortunately.
- sexysadie86, on 02/20/2008, -3/+6I can't believe all you people bad-mouthing Casablanca. That film is pure cinematic perfection.
- quomen, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3He probably has "I Know Who Killed Me" at number one.
- ShugNinx21, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3And just because it's old doesn't mean it sucks either.
- gmprunner, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3Why? Is there an age limit for good films to be on lists or what? I fit's better than all but 9 films that came before it, then what's the problem?
- phazon88, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3I saw it 2 years ago when I was 18 and immediately thought it was the greatest movie of all time. To each his own I guess.
- diskit, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3West Side Story?
Really? - isayre020888, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3Damn straight Casablanca better be at number 1.
- alacrity2005, on 02/20/2008, -1/+4Please. Lost Weekend? The Sting!!!?? Get over yourself.
- npg6913, on 02/20/2008, -2/+4all examples of great directing, acting, and storyline
- bleutuna, on 02/20/2008, -4/+6Amadeus should replace Unforgiven. Very much.
- AlexanderZero, on 02/20/2008, -2/+4Am I the only person who thinks The Godfather wasn't that amazing? Acting, style, drama, sure it had it. The movie lacked drive and it was too long. I think to be listed as number three on that list you can't have a movie that's boring.
- captZEEbo, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2I'd want the Departed and the Sting over West Side Story and All About Eve
- Pyroteknik, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3Lord of the Rings, like mentioned, was more for the three movies, all of which were triumphs of cinematography. Not to mention the scope of the project. Not many films were so successfully ambitious as the Lord of the Rings.
They absolutely nailed the top three. All three are timeless classics, each one awesome and breathtaking in its own way. Each one is blessed with a lead actor with stage presence and charisma enough to carry the movie alone, if necessary. Casablanca is simply the best love story ever filmed. Lawrence of Arabia has a scope unmatched and, like the Lord of the Rings, is a cinematographic masterpiece. If you have the chance to see it in a theater, do so. And The Godfather, between Al Pacino at his best, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, James Caan and others, puts together what is arguably the best ensemble cast ever. Overall, a great top 3. - blitzer, on 02/20/2008, -8/+10This probably took the author less then 10 mins to put together. Weak list.
- gkubrick, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3Kane=How Green Was My Valley
Strangelove=My Fair Lady - AdHaR, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2who let you out into the internet?
- BryanUT, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Bogart rules. All hs movies have merit. Period.
And no one has seen this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028096/plotsummary
Yeah, it sucks, but suspend disbelief and be there in the desert. In the time.
An amazing character study.
All his movies were political and relevant to his day and time, and the truths hold true today. ***** timeless.
Bogart, FTW. - gmprunner, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2The funny thing is, if the writer made it "unique" and put less conventional movies on the list, people would be screaming about how completely inaccurate it is. It may be generic, but it's also true, and that's much more important.
- squishee, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2West Side Story is a piece of *****, and this list can go to hell for getting "I Feel Pretty" stuck in my head.
- Hoogs, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Will do, thanks.
- UglieJosh, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Aye. Citizen Kane is the second best non-winner of all time after "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb".
Any movie buffs know offhand what movies beat Kane and Strangelove? - alacrity2005, on 02/20/2008, -2/+4I think you're the exact right amount of upset about this.
- bagboyrebel, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2don't you mean typical, atypical would mean it was a unique list.
- gmprunner, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Winning "Best Picture" does IMPLY that it is the best movie of the year, what it doesn't do is GUARANTEE it.
- skunkman62, on 02/20/2008, -2/+4citizen kane instead of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
- Fungii, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2I love that movie, too. I like how your perception of the characters changes as the story unfolds. Definitely worthy of all the accolades it receives.
And Marilyn Munroe has a small part in it, which was kind of surprising for me the first time I watched it. - bluebovine, on 02/20/2008, -3/+5Worst list ever...is Digg ever gonna get over their hard on for 'lists?" Thanks for a another waste of 3 minutes of my life, fellow Diggers.
- birdly, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2It's young, but you're more mature than I was.
- skunkman62, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2sunk
- Fungii, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3No *****, Crash was a ridiculously bad movie. Forrest Gump was pretty heinous as well. After those two POS movies won best picture, there's really no point in giving a ***** who wins the Oscars, they have no credibility.
- birdly, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah, man...probably the most beautiful woman that ever lived!
