- idiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BG? Oh my gods! A fracking show about toasters is #1? May the lords of Kobol save our souls.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are only three television shows that I watch on a regular basis:
1) Lost
2) 24
3) Battlestar Galactica
The main reason? Season-long plot. Another reason? Awesome writing (though not as much for 24, lately). After being so throughly spoiled by these three shows, I will never again be able to watch episodic television again with their stand-alone episodes (Stargate is ***** to me). If I want a concise story, I'll stick to a good film. But for television viewing, we've not had it this good in many years. - example, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This show is so satisfying. The acting is very good, sometimes great, and the writing is smart and tight.
Do you enjoy Lost? I like it, but the writers leave truck sized plot holes in every episode. The Battlestar writers weave a much tighter yarn. I love it when they surprise you with a twist, but in hindsight you could see it coming for a few episodes.
I recommend the official podcast rss - Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BG is not just good sci-fi. It's good tv. It's really a series about war. It just happens to take place in a futuristic setting.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent show, too bad it's on SciFi. SciFi has a tendency to take shows that are really good and put a stain on them. Get past the SciFi thing, watch the show. It is masterfully done and has excellent plot lines.
- m1th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the best shows ever!
- Kvetch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While my opinion means nothing, to me it is one of the best shows on television.
- lampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I would watch it if the camera wasn't shaking and going up and down and left and right the whole GD time. Makes me sea sick."
Unfortunately, the action camera is one of the best features about the show, Firefly used the same camera style, but it doesn't bode well for those who easily get motion sickness. - nolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0EA's home is redwood city dude, they must just have a branch down their. It's an evil company anyway.
- thicke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with BS and My Name is Earl. Otherwise, ech.
I think they forgot Lost and Rome. - Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lost seriously dropped in quality(story) ind 2nd season, but BSG gained more and more as show went on. BSG is the best there is on TV.
- MattRK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would watch it if the camera wasn't shaking and going up and down and left and right the whole GD time. Makes me sea sick.
- tawker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, granted that the show is produced mere blocks from me, it's great to see. In case you were wondering, Battlestar is produced in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, home of the EA and many many more cool tech companies!
- Carbito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BSG is a great show, this title is definatly deserved.
Best-show-ever. - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ilselu1 I did that just this weekend that pasted :-)
- fitzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am glad Battlestar Galatica and My Name is Earl are both on the list.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I would watch it if the camera wasn't shaking and going up and down and left and right the whole GD time. Makes me sea sick."
I really like the non-steady-cam look. Have you noticed that a lot of great shows have used this method? Battlestar, Lost, Firefly, the list goes on - duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Excellent show, too bad it's on SciFi. SciFi has a tendency to take shows that are really good and put a stain on them. The SciFi original movies, yes. The tv series on SciFi, no. - rsplatpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy crap, times also put Wonder Showzen at #6, this is actually a great list by someone that watches TV, good job Times!
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ronald D. Moore has shown his creative genius once again in this riveting and exciting series. He helped bring ST:TNG back to life and now is doing the same for BG.
- example, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn. I linked the podcast and rss but they were filtered. Here are the URLs:

The podcast has commentary from the producers and writers. - Digisurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Battlestar Galactica is one of the best shows I've seen in a long while. Been watching it since day one. Another really amazing show was HBO's Rome which I think should be on the list as well. Get nauseated by shaky cameras or are too thick to understand even a simple plot? Don't care. It's not the shows problem. Your loss.
- dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have every episode on DVD!!! Season 1 and Season 2.0.
- ilselu1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Watch them "marathon style" on dvd back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back ;-P
-dug- - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you just sit down and watch the show (Battlestar Galactica) you will get hooked.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rightly So
- jizzmaster0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's only 4 things wrong with BSG:
1.) Starbuck is a girl.. sorry, but I liked it better with Apollo and Starbuck as guys in the original
2.) Overuse of the word "frack"... it's getting pretty corny now
3.) Plot lines evolve a little too slowly
4.) Too much content I couldn't even let a 14y/o watch... I love it, but I remember watching the original with my Dad when I was very young and unfortunately there isn't a decent show like this I can watch with a child. I guess it's a trade-off... probably wouldn't be as good if it was PG-13... just like Oz would've sucked if it wasn't TV-MA.
Other than the first 3 and maybe the 4th criticism, I think BSG is definitely one of the best shows out there today. Maybe not the #1, but certainly top 10. - rsplatpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, the put in Wonder Showzen, no bitching!
- Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now that i've calmed down, i read that, yes, the guy did put up Arrested Development in his best of returning shows, my bad.
...but putting up Veronica Mars in that list? Seriously?
^^^lol, "kiddin' me?" - Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT! YOU BASTARDS! ONE OF THE FEW DECENT SHOWS ON TV, AND IT GOT BEAT OUT BY 'HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER? YOU'VE GOT TO BE FRIGGIN' KIDDIN' ME?
- wirjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are you kidding? The show is good but I don't think it deserves to get the "Show of the Year" especially from a well-respected magazine like Time.
- Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I seriously don't understand why this show is so popular.
I watched 5 episodes of the second season. No space ship fights. All the aliens looked cool, but they got their asses kicked so fast it didn't even feel like a threat. Except the one who is the reoccuring asian chick. And well, I just don't see it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just got done reviewing the first season in preparation for the thrid season kick-off (January 6th). Can't wait.
- turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You'd need to have a pretty pissweak constitution for camera wobble in a television show to make you "sea sick".
- nolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard the show was great and I was like yeah uhuh, sure it is. But then I was lent the dvd's and I was blown away. The show has no right to be this good it is HBO quality, I was stunned. So I went and looked at the credits and low and beholed I saw the name Ronald D. Moore. For those of you who don't recognize that name he was responsible for the fantastic HBO show Carnivale. Suddenly it all made sense. It may be on the scifi channel but it is an HBO show through and through. In a year without HBO's THE WIRE, battlstar galactaca deserves the title Best Show on Television.
- merlyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed with other posters.
I *might* be watching BSG... if ONLY they would HOLD THE GODDAMN CAMERA STEADY.
However, my tivo score is: "My name is earl": yes, "BSG": stopped taping after the fifth episode. - EpsilonPi118, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Give yourself a pat on the back Time Magazine. This kind of makes up for naming President Bush man of the year. BSG is one of the best shows on television!
- livet0ski, on 08/17/2009, -0/+0LOST is wayyyy better
- KSDigerati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My wife even likes the show, but I had to make her watch the first few episodes. I'd like to see it get an emmy.
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would definitely be the best of the best if it only followed 4-6 plot lines instead of 10-15. This isn't a personal preference as much as it is a representation of the general publics attention span.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Plus the papa-knows-best military crap annoys me, but this has nothing to do with that. It's just poor stuff."
Well since you only watched seven episodes you don't know that you are oh so wrong about that. Everyone who has watched the entire series so far is laughing at this comment.
I guess the show isn't for everyone. Fine by me. As long as it's doing well enough to stay on the air, I could care less if it gets any more popular. - spliznork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BSG is like watching a train wreck. I've watched every episode. Each time, I vow never to watch another. The only good actor on that show is Edward James Olmos (Cmdr Adama) -- everyone else seriously over acts, Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) being the worst offender. Seriously bad cornball writing a la "The Cylons could reproduce if only they could Love." I want so much for this show to be good. It's not. Better shows: Lost. Deadwood. 24. Rome.
- jizzmaster0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this was cool until I saw the other shows in his top 10. The Office, come on, that's a horrible show... completely unwatchable. Then he leaves out great shows like 24, Family Guy, The Shield, Nip/Tuck, etc.
My Name Is Earl is a pretty good show... so he gets 1.5 out of 10 right. - tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess those of us who are annoyed by laughably poor & dumb writing/acting/directing are in the minority. But yeah, I'll watch a new episode or two on the slim chance they shaped up. Why is smart sci-fi such a rarity?
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[continued] Stargate was refreshingly smart sci-fi until the Sci-Fi Channel got their dufus drool soaked mits on it.
- steviesaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best Sci-Fi has nothing to do with space. It sets stories and ideas in space as a way of looking at them in a different light. Classic Sci-Fi has always been about us, not outer space. BSG does this better than any show in years. Not only better than the original series, it's gunning for best Sci-Fi show since Twilight Zone.
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SciFi has great concepts, good actors and decent execution... Too bad SciFi hires soap-opera-reject writers.
- yanked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had heard most of what's said here about BG, I'm a fan of science fiction, I was excited to hear that it was being ranked among the best SF TV and even among the best TV more generally, so I got the first season, and watched a few episodes happily, then a couple more, and finally forced myself though a couple more, thinking, gosh, the writing and plot must get better, how could it not with all this praise, can everyone be this idiotic? After 7 episodes I must conclude that the answer seems to be yes. The dialogue is egregious cliche after cliche, clunky, dull characters with no personality, no wit, no sparkle, nothing. The plot illogics are so numerous that I literally lost count, nobody's interpersonal actions make much sense, the script as no pacing or nuance, it just feels low-quality, like a crappy 70s show swiftly cancelled, but with nicer effects. Plus the papa-knows-best military crap annoys me, but this has nothing to do with that. It's just poor stuff.
- Kodo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even for us Aussies we recognise good TV. I have downloaded it all but will probably go out and get it on DVD it is that good. Can't wait for the new series to start in 10 days or so.
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ KSDigerati
My wife loves the show too. I too had to make her watch the first 2 shows but baby, she's more of an addict than I am.
Excellent plot lines. Excellent writing (sorry Yanked, but I completely disagree, the writing's as good as West Wing was at the beginning...you must have been drunk for those 7 episodes you watched). More importantly it leaves me thinking about it for more than a few hours after each episode which in today's blank tv-scape VERY few shows do. In fact, most shows these days are Fox-like drivel that you can barely spend 3 minutes before your brain is biologically dead.
Hope to see BSG going for years to come. -
