The worst movie ever made enters public domain
torrentfreak.com — Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is considered to be one of the worst movies ever made. It is so bad, that it is actually fun to watch. The filmmakers were probably too embarrassed to renew the copyright, so it's now in the public domain.

- converge, on 11/15/2007, -6/+67Any movie that is "so bad it's good" is not the worst movie. Movies like Gigli that are physically painful to watch can only be the worst movies.
- thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25hey now, I saw Gigli, and it really wasn't THAT bad. Now Catwoman on the other hand....
- stupidverizon, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Gigli was like an icoherent dream. Once you finish watching it, it's like you just woke up from a dream, and you try to piece everything together as hard you can but you fail, and the only satisfaction is knowing that by noon, like a dream, you'll have forgotten all about Gigli.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Catwoman is "White Chicks bad."
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5I was expecting to be able to watch the Super Mario Bros. movie upon reading this headline.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -31/+3I thought this thread was about "Serenity"....I feel cheated!

*****. - Godel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24This movie is not in the public domain. The Copyright act was amended in 1992 to provide for automatic renewal of works published between 1964 and 1972. (Pub. L. 102-307, 106 Stat. 264).
But, I doubt anyone will care if you download it. - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Or "Manos: The Hands of Fate."
- Greattastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's only a buck at target, for those of us that are bandwith challenged

HotD anyone? - nytechy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3'House Of The Dead' is a bad movie. Only good part is when the Sega girls dance around with the tops off.
- TheKidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hooray for SANTY Claus!
- Edogz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My dad and I just watched this movie tonight. We really enjoyed it! Some parts are extremely funny!
Good classic. =]
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33I thought the worst movie ever was "Plan 9 from Outer Space"
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4From what I've seen, Plan 9 IS the worst movie ever made, but this one is very close and some would probably think it's worse
- zybch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Have you actually seen 'plan 9'??
Plan 9 is actually very watchable.and isn't all that bad. It was just a victim of Ed Wood's vision being too grand, and the budget being way too small.
Battlefield Earth HAS to be the worst movie ever!!
I have 'Santa vs. the Martians' as part of a $15 50 DVD set of 'cult' sci-fi movies. It also contains such gems as 'Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women' and 'Hercules against the Moon Men'.
But if you want to see a really bad movie check out the recent 'The Cavern" (not The Cave). - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Worse than Dr T and his women?
Santa Clause Is actually laughable in its terrible-itude, - HAKdragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The problems with Plan 9 that make it so bad (yet so hilarious to watch) have nothing to do with Ed Wood's vision. For example:
*Bella Lugosi died during the middle of the filming and they replaced him with somebody who looks nothing like him (and there is a very noticable height difference).
*A scene will change from being night to day right after the previous scene was at night (and vice versa).
*The strings holding up the UFOs are clearly visible - VeryAngryJim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2zybch, mind telling me where you got that set? Sounds like it's worth a $15 gamble to me.
- bse5150, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I second the motion here: I was always under the impression that Plan 9 was the worst movie ever made. Even Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (2000?) said they couldn't do it justice.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Worst movie ever made would be something really unwatchable. While Plan 9 has tons of problems, it is a good bit of fun to watch.
- Raaben, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12What about Manos?
- floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What about Gay ***** From Outerspace?

- Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Manos was worse.
- RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Anyone who watches Manos comes out of it a more destructive and miserable human being. Definitely the worst movie ever.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Oh come on, rocking the goomba troops lulling them into a passive mindset instead of stomping on them was brilliant. brilliant, I tell you!
But seriously that solution opposed to the solution in the videogame is hardly material to drive a person to come out of it a more destructive and miserable human being. - ninjan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've fallen asleep to it about 4 times. It's a nice cure for insomnia.
- Lyph4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Oh come on, rocking the goomba troops lulling them into a passive mindset instead of stomping on them was brilliant. brilliant, I tell you!
But seriously that solution opposed to the solution in the videogame is hardly material to drive a person to come out of it a more destructive and miserable human being."
What does that have to do with Manos: The Hands of Fate? And I don't remember there being a video game for the movie.. - synae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hackwrench is clearly referring to the Super Mario Brothers movie, starring Bob Hoskins, Dennis Hopper, and John Leguizamo. Many people consider it to be the cause of violence in the middle east and the rise of communism in China -- so I've heard. For some inexplicable reason, I enjoyed it. I also have no idea why our good friend hackwrench mentioned it, considering only one other comment has mentioned the film and that was a few (parent-) posters above this parent.
- Etaoin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I've actually seen this movie, and I would support it as a solid candidate for "worst movie ever made".
Remember, when it's December on Earth, it's Septober on Mars! - tikistyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow, i just saw this at Target yesterday for $1 and picked it up, having never heard of it. I laughed so hard at the title that i knew right away i could never spend a dollar more wisely. Gonna watch it tonight.
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Unless you got the MST3K version, you're going to want to jam forks into your ears and eyes just to make it stop (just remember you have a remote to stop it at any time)
- realyst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I have the MST3k ep of this movie. Laughed my ass off, too:)
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh yeah, that's a very funny MST3K. My favorite one is Space Mutiny!
- Konvict, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6This piece of ***** is #79 on IMDB's bottom 100 list. Still, I would rather watch this than another Christmas flick starring Tim Allen.
- stupidverizon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Or another movie starring Hilary Duff.
- rapidblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and on that note, Material Girls(with Hilary Duff) is #2 on the IMDB bottom 100, followed closely by a Tim Allen classic..Zoom. I'm going to have to try and find "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" now to satisfy my curiosity.
- Skafia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have this movie sitting on my shelf. Im starring at it right now. It is awesome. Awesome to the max.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I never liked that one. Instead, I prefer the Mexican film, Santa Claus (aka: Santa Vs. The Devil).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053241/- carlosauresrex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i remember watching that on t.v. when i was a kid, but i could never remember the name of it, thanks.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is that the one were Joel and the Bots thought Santa Claus was a satan worshiper because of all the pentagrams on the walls?
- Stormwysper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8935632493024405102&q=mst3k&hl=en
This is the MST3K version. This one is way more sureal.
- bird757, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I thought Prince Of Tides was the worst movie ever.
Damn that evil Barbara Streisand! - sacr3dc0w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yentel?
- chronot150, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd offer my "Worst Movie" input, but I can't decide between Mortal Kombat 2 and Starship Troopers 2.
- TwenT4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Starship Troopers2 was definitely one of the most abominable movies I'd ever seen... i did enjoy MK2 tho, maybe since i was 12-13 when i saw it. Still think it was pretty fun tho.
More recently, thought High Tension was one of the most awkward, clumsiest and just plain ***** movies ever made.
- TwenT4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Starship Troopers2 was definitely one of the most abominable movies I'd ever seen... i did enjoy MK2 tho, maybe since i was 12-13 when i saw it. Still think it was pretty fun tho.
- carlosauresrex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2i have this movie on dvd.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14When I was on vacation two years ago, a friend and I decided to go buy the cheapest movie that we could find, because we were bored. We went to the supermarket and found the movie Deadly Drifters ( http://imdb.com/title/tt0084455/ ) on DVD for $3.99. It was a Godsend. The movie boasted having Peter Coyote and Danny Glover starring in it. In fact, the case of the movie is covered solely with pictures of the two, but mostly pictures of Danny glover. (The movie cover that we had is not the one seen on imdb ). We went to watch the movie and were greeted with a non-existant plot. Shortly into the movie, Danny Glover appears for about ten seconds. That's all his role includes. He doesn't show up again. After that, the movie includes more retardation, including, but not limited to:
Peter Coyote puts a piece of dynamite in his mouth and lights his while holding some lady that he stole (He went to a restaurant, and just took her). It doesn't explode, so he says "We should get married" They get married. This has nothing to do with the plot.
There is a 45-minute segment of the story where Peter Coyote tells the story of Jonah and the whale in some Indian language. It is accompanied by English subtitles. I fastforwarded through that part.
The story ends with Peter Coyote (Who, in the movie, by the way, is named 'Rex') going to a veterinarian and learning that he has 'second sight.' He then goes to the beach and meets a bunch of people who he saw earlier in the story, and his wife drowns herself. That's how the movie ends.
Overall, I would have to say that Deadly Drifters ( Also called 'Out' ) is the worst movie ever made.- dobesov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow man, that one sounds like a gem! Once I picked up a VHS from the Dollar Tree, it was called "Number1, Licensed to Love and Kill" a Puerto Rico production...
I found it on the IMDB as "Licensed to Love and Kill" Somehow my version seemed to have been dubbed over in English... which is strange because it was made in the UK... I can only imagine that it was dubbed for Puerto Rico then re-dubbed for redistribution. It was, also recorded over an old porno tape which showed up for about 1 second at the end of the credits.
My point is that... I thought it might be the worst movie ever... until I read your description. Kudos to you.
- dobesov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow man, that one sounds like a gem! Once I picked up a VHS from the Dollar Tree, it was called "Number1, Licensed to Love and Kill" a Puerto Rico production...
- unununium272, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm sorry, I still think starcrash is the worst movie ever... you can not beat the power of the Hoff.
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Cant be worse than "Jingle All The Way"...
which not only casted but Starred "Sinbad"- jdelamater, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Personally, that is my favorite christmas movie of all time. Sinbad was a great addition to the cast, as well as Phile Hartman. Overall, this is not a "bad" movie.
Battlefield Earth...THAT was bad. - user, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Put that cookie DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jingle All the Way was a great movie!

- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Silent Night, Deadly Night is by far a better christmas classic. Although it loses some of its original appeal on DVD. It's much better to break out the BetaMax to watch it.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And then there's Silent Night, Bloody Night; Christmas Evil; and Black Christmas.
Bloody fantastic classics for a horror christmas.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And then there's Silent Night, Bloody Night; Christmas Evil; and Black Christmas.
- HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Snakes on a Plane was the worst movie I ever saw. I'm glad i waited to see it for $2. It wasn't even any good to laugh at. it just made me feel uncomfortable the whole time, not knowing whether i should be finding things funny or not.
- a22e, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have seen this movie a number of times, it is bad.. So bad it is funny. I made some of my friends watch it last year, they have not let me pick a movie since.
- Yaanu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This has been on archive.org for a while, but we still love it.

I also believe that this is where the band "The Laziest Men on Mars" got their name. - anevilscientist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea i downloaded this like a few weeks ago, i got it just because the title sounded so bad that it would be good. I wouldn't say this is thee worst movie, because being so bad that it's good makes it better than truely bad films.

- xen271, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4cant be any worse than 'ultraviolet'
that movie sucked- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I haven't even seen a scene as cheezed in a video game as when she goes driving off the rooftop on her motorcycle, lands in the helicopter shooting at her, pulls out both guns and shoots everybody, then goes driving right out like "business as usual!"
- thefutureisours, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For another horrible movie, try Troll II.
"Nilbog! It's goblin spelled backwards! This is their kingdom!"- twotimesthru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Troll 2 is a splendid movie.. even considering there are no trolls in the movie. Troll 2 is probably my favorite horrible movie.
- adamhamm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I would have to say the worst movie I have ever seen would be "Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311361/ ). While "Plan 9 from Outer Space" is worse in a technical sense, "Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter" was much more painful to watch.

Edit: beat by swizzley : - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I think movie suckage is sort of like when pain is inflicted upon a person. There are varying levels of pain, but at some point it just gets so blinding that you cant tell the difference if it gets worse, your body's already in shock. Likewise, ultra-terrible movies are beyond that threshold where trying to make points about where one sucks compared to another just becomes a futile, irrational, mind-bending experience.
- Yaanu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The real question: Is there a copy that has the entire/uncut opening credits? It appears there is a discrepancy between the two versions we have supplied to us.
- jmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is definitely not the worst movie ever made, "Ika Resuraa" is!
The plot of the movie revolves around a squid (I kid you not) that has to win a wrestling match to win over the girl (a hot Japanese girl) that he loves.
My friends and I in Japan had to drink a lot of beer to finish this movie...
http://www.sarudama.com/japanese_movies/calamari_wrestl.shtml - remo2012, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is pretty cheesy.... I'm not sure if it counts as a movie?
However it's pretty bad....... or is it so bad it's great?

- jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"The filmmakers were probably too embarrassed to renew the copyright"
You don't renew copyright
.
From wikipedia:
"For works that received their copyright prior to 1978, a renewal had to be filed in the work's 28th year with the Library of Congress Copyright Office for its term of protection to be extended. The need for renewal was eliminated in 1992, but works that had already entered the public domain by non-renewal did not regain copyright protection. Therefore, works published before 1964 that were not renewed are in the public domain. No additional material is currently set to enter the public domain until at least 2019 due to changes in the applicable laws."
Since the film came out in 64, rather than before 64, I would imagine that it is in public domain because of a reason similar to Night of the Living Dead where they left off the copyright notice or something.
...or wikipedia is wrong about the dates! - Switchnig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this movie is terrible...and I can't stop watching

- citizenmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just watched the MST3K episode the other day. The polar bear scene alone is worth calling this the worst movie ever made.

- rgladstein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Check the credits for SC Conquers the Martians. One of the kids (I can't remember if it's the human or Martian girl) is played by none other than Pia Zadora. That has to boost the film on anyone's worst film ever list.
- RAMPART36, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Death to Supermodels" is THE worst movie of all time, this movie is like Star Wars compared to "Death to Supermodels", i would rather lick a toilet bowl than watch that movie again.
- adwb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They're selling this Santa Claus Conquers the Martians on a DVD with half a dozen other movies from the same era in the Target bargain bin. I bought it last week for my girlfriend who loves super cheesy sci-fi flicks.
If you liked Plan 9 From Outer Space you'll probably like this. - tankexmortis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Any Coleman Francis movie is worse than this. I still haven't seen Red Zone Cuba, but his other two are... Whatever the opposite of a masterpiece is. Maybe even worse than Manos.
