The top 100 films According to The Times

- pizzler, on 05/05/2008, -0/+36For those of you that are in a rush.... http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_an ...
- carguy84, on 05/05/2008, -7/+1Wow, how old is this writer? Jurassic Park 100??? The Wizard of Oz 20? Those should be way lower.
- billymonster, on 05/05/2008, -5/+1no boondock saints, donnie darko, fight club, or memento?
file this under 'buried'- FinalPizzaHut, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Memento is the only one of those that I would even CONSIDER putting on a list like this, and even that's a stretch.
- IBadassI, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3WTF! Empire strikes back is not in top 10!
- yacks, on 05/05/2008, -0/+140: life of brian,.

TOP 250: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top
FLOP 100: http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+14To be fair, IMDB's list is pretty nerd-heavy.
- ceredron, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9nerdy-heavy, sure, but much more accurate? easily.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -2/+1Only the nerdiest nerd in the world would try to call an arbitrarily-ranked top 100 list "accurate."
- jacenat, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3arbitrary? imdb has a solid ranking system ...
- Zyphron, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2It is less arbitrary than it is a popular average. At the same time, the fact that a lot of people like it, or that it is popular, does not mean it is actually good. (see Starwars I, II, and III)
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2The popular average of people who post in online polls. That is, the same people who rocked the internet polls in favor of Rom Paul.
(No disrespect to Ron Paul.) - Lukesed, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Starwars I, II, and III are not on the list so you pretty much just killed your own argument. Only the top box office earners that are actually good make it to the top 250. There is some film-by-film disagreements with different haters for every movie (even the likes of Kane and Godather) but not a lot of general bias.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2The popular average of people who post in online polls. That is, the same people who rocked the internet polls in favor of Rom Paul.
- FinalPizzaHut, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2IMDb's list is lame.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -2/+1Only the nerdiest nerd in the world would try to call an arbitrarily-ranked top 100 list "accurate."
- KyleGoetz, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4IMDB's list is pretty movies-that-just-came-out heavy. Every 6 months there's about three thousand new movies on the list as every 13-year-old girl in the country votes up her new favorite movie by giving it 10/10.
That being said, I'm working through all 250, trying to see them all. Every couple months I update my list to make sure I don't watch a movie that was #249 but has now been kicked off by Jason Bourne.
- ceredron, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9nerdy-heavy, sure, but much more accurate? easily.
- Monkeydew06, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Nerds have the best taste in movies.
- SRSco, on 05/05/2008, -7/+1That list is pretty bad. American History X is NOT a good movie. It looks/feels like a Rated R after school special. Yet nerds rate it high. Shawshank Redemption is an okay movie, but it is NOT the second best movie ever made. This list is very nerd and testosterone heavy.
- Icebox3, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6Congratulations, you're stupid.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+14To be fair, IMDB's list is pretty nerd-heavy.
- hiddenlawyer, on 05/05/2008, -12/+7just remember, these are other people's opinions... (especially about #2)
- astrnomic, on 05/05/2008, -1/+23These are opinions? Damn, I thought this was finally the real list...
- bakkouz, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4IMDB is the real indicator of people's opinion, and on IMDB "There Will Be Blood" is ranked at #52 in the top 250.
- SRSco, on 05/05/2008, -4/+2Only the opinions of people who bother to log into IMDB to rate a movie. AKA white American men who like the internet. It is NOT a real indicator.
- Asvetic, on 05/05/2008, -7/+7Watched "There Will Be Blood" this past weekend... In my OPINION it was long, slow and ultimately boring. DDL was a powerhouse of performance, and I can understand why he received the award, but the movie was less than marvelous. Plus... where the hell was all the blood they promised?
- lordtyros, on 05/05/2008, -6/+6Thank you, good sir. I was ***** pissed when I finished that movie. I've learned to say ***** critical opinion because they tend to like pretentious garbage that they can throw whatever symbolism they want upon for lack of driving action and pacing.
- FinalPizzaHut, on 05/05/2008, -3/+3Not everything is a popcorn flick.
- gravytrain73, on 05/05/2008, -3/+3You read my mind and said it.
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -4/+4You all seem like watching Commando over and over again would be your best bet,
Just leave the movies with purpose and reason to us, I'm fine with that.
- Jorriss, on 05/05/2008, -9/+25Buried for having the words "Point" and "Break" in the same sentence.
- TylerDCA, on 05/05/2008, -2/+7Got that right, Point Break is terrible. Might as well have Speed 2 on there... or Tango and Cash
- jd72277, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Point Break= top 5 guilty pleasure movies on my list. Roadhouse is on that list too!
- pjdk28, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1EXACTLY. Who puts Point Break on any top films list? wtf it is not even top 1000, let alone ahead of Jurassic Park. Worst list EVER
- mcfly1204, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I can see how people might not like Point Break, but has anyone ever watched that movie about the former Ohio State quarterback that becomes an undercover FBI agent? It's in my top five... well maybe top ten. It has Nick Nolte in it, or Gary Busey. I don't know, I always get the two confused.
- matthewkg, on 05/05/2008, -20/+51Buried for no Fight Club.
- cderry, on 05/05/2008, -1/+44You're forgetting Rule #1....and #2.
- Silentnite85, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I did. What were they again? Oh right, I'll never get to know again.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Oh give them a break. What other list would have the Empire Strikes Back and The Life of Brian in the top 40?
- SRSco, on 05/05/2008, -16/+4Fight Club wasn't a good movie. Sorry.
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -6/+1lmao finally someone that has some sense, I mean the guy who came up with the story didn't even think up the ending till half way through. I'm sorry just not my opinion of a good movie
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Um...actually, I'm no writer, but I've read writings by writers on writing, and many of them seem to think the best way to write a story is to create characters and let them drive the plot. So they don't know how the story will end until at least half way through....plus I always thought Fight Club was a better movie than book anyway.
- BLiNk0, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah that may be okay in some cases but Fight Club's twist isn't an ordinary twist and is what the whole first half builds up, so therefore the writer went back and added those "little pieces" of the movie/book that give away the twist (which for some reason every annoying person in the world feels they must point out while watching the movie, I get it the telephone booth doesn't accept calls, amazing).
- pjdk28, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Are you serious? Chuck Phalanuk is one of the best writers of our generation. Ive never heard anyone who is an active reader who wouldnt agree, whether they like the subject matter or not. who the hell are you reading?
- BLiNk0, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1The good old Bible
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Um...actually, I'm no writer, but I've read writings by writers on writing, and many of them seem to think the best way to write a story is to create characters and let them drive the plot. So they don't know how the story will end until at least half way through....plus I always thought Fight Club was a better movie than book anyway.
- drguerra, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1A medium like film, like any other art form, is mostly relative. Fight Club isn't for everyone. It's mostly for a particular kind of person, and that kind of person will enjoy it more than any other film. Some people just don't get the appeal. Not that they are too stupid to get it, or such, simply it's not for them.
To me, Fight Club is a masterpiece of modern cinema. (and an excellent book, too)
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -6/+1lmao finally someone that has some sense, I mean the guy who came up with the story didn't even think up the ending till half way through. I'm sorry just not my opinion of a good movie
- billymonster, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2no boondock saints, donnie darko, fight club, or memento?
file this under 'buried'- BLiNk0, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Memento I'll agree with but they all have their problems to make them not as good
- cderry, on 05/05/2008, -1/+44You're forgetting Rule #1....and #2.
- Shpox, on 05/05/2008, -10/+13Sad not to see 'Citizen Kane' or 'Pulp Fiction' in the top 10.
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -9/+2pulp fiction, most overrated crap in the universe
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -8/+1Yeah sad to see actually good movies up there instead...
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2What country you from?
- ElBeh, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1What?
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2WHAT AIN'T NO COUNTRY I EVER HEARED OF! THEY SPEAK ENGLISH IN "WHAT"?
- ElBeh, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1What?
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2What country you from?
- BillDoor, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I couldn't find Citizen Kane on the list at all. But hey Point Break is ?
- xkingADROCKx, on 05/05/2008, -5/+7Milkshake anyone?
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4I already drank yours
- emildorbell, on 05/05/2008, -5/+55ET? Come the ***** on. Also, There Will Be Blood was very good, but these guys will have changed their minds about that one within a year.
- SRSco, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2ET is great!
- emildorbell, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6But is it #3 great? No.
- Lukesed, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1ET is ***** awesome. The guy who made the film that beat it out for best picture (Ghandi) actually said the the thought E.T. should have won because it was more meaningful.
- ErrorS, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah, ET deserves #3.. I dunno if you guys are too young to remember the impact this movie had when it was released, but it was huge.
- emildorbell, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6But is it #3 great? No.
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1they already have changed their minds. this wouldn't be its placing in the few weeks after its theatrical release; it took the dvd's release to bring the critics around.
- SRSco, on 05/05/2008, -3/+2ET is great!
- blog4charity, on 05/05/2008, -4/+13Rosebud
- mmockett, on 05/05/2008, -9/+6It was his sled. It was his sled from when he was a kid. There, I just saved you two long boobless hours.
- bluenash, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1dugg you up for the Family Guy reference
- mmockett, on 05/05/2008, -9/+6It was his sled. It was his sled from when he was a kid. There, I just saved you two long boobless hours.
- pentak, on 05/05/2008, -14/+6Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at #9 ????
pos- zentehflash, on 05/05/2008, -6/+13You're right, it should be higher in the list.
- cramming, on 05/05/2008, -4/+8Much agreed, chap.
- TheThirdLevel, on 05/05/2008, -2/+5Jim Carrey totally did a 180 on that, I was so used to his random slapstick comedy junk, he amazed me with that movie.
- cramming, on 05/05/2008, -4/+8Much agreed, chap.
- goomba323, on 05/05/2008, -2/+5I was so happy to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind so high on the list. I just loved how creative it was, and michael gondry did a masterful job in directing such a hard to film premise.
- zentehflash, on 05/05/2008, -6/+13You're right, it should be higher in the list.
- Alteron, on 05/05/2008, -13/+9Fight Club?
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -6/+4A movie that ONLY 14 year old boys can enjoy? Ya no.
- Misanthrope, on 05/05/2008, -2/+2Wow. That was maybe the most mindless and ignorant comment I've seen on Digg in a long time.
Way to go.
- Misanthrope, on 05/05/2008, -2/+2Wow. That was maybe the most mindless and ignorant comment I've seen on Digg in a long time.
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -6/+4A movie that ONLY 14 year old boys can enjoy? Ya no.
- quomen, on 05/05/2008, -4/+5I totally agree. I looove Casablanca. I'm 20 years old BTW but that movie is timeless.
- cderry, on 05/05/2008, -3/+98No "Shawshank Redemption". No "Forrest Gump". No "Godftaher Part II". No "Schindler's List". Yet "Jurassic Park" somehow made the list. And worst of all..."E.T." is #3?!?!
Sorry, I can't take this list seriously at all.- emildorbell, on 05/05/2008, -3/+6I miss all those, and Seven. Seven is a flawless movie.
- openingsound, on 05/05/2008, -2/+1seven is ***** flawless.
- bhavinp, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2I bet Time and Steven Speilberg have some kind of connection. But then again, Schindler's List is not on there.
- goomba323, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Schindler's List not being there is a travesty. Such a beautiful film, and I'm not even a fan of sappy holocaust movies.
- razorsharpwit, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1How about "the deer hunter" the greatest war movie ever made.
What about "in the heat of the night"- there's no more racial tension in any other movie.
- razorsharpwit, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1How about "the deer hunter" the greatest war movie ever made.
- SRSco, on 05/05/2008, -4/+2ET is better than all those movies you listed (except Godfather Part 2).
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Godfather > Godfather II. Fugghedaboutet.
- cderry, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1No one argued that. Godfather made the list, just not Godfather part II.
- KokomoNYC, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Godfather > Godfather II. Fugghedaboutet.
- drguerra, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I agree with you entirely. Top 100 lists are never as comprehensive as they should be. They add a lot of crap like JAWS, and neglect some amazing films, like Shawshank.
- SolidSnake24, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3What!!!! No Shawshank Redemption? I'm not going through this list!!
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1"they add alot of crap like jaws and neglect amazing films, like shawshank."
how about they ignore the vast majority of all foreign films.
- emildorbell, on 05/05/2008, -3/+6I miss all those, and Seven. Seven is a flawless movie.
- hayzeus, on 05/05/2008, -5/+20No Porkies? No Red Dawn? And where's the timeless Inspector Gadget?
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2How could I have forgotten those?!
- Crono, on 05/05/2008, -15/+10This list is Garbage.. where is Lord of the Rings?
- FinalPizzaHut, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6Right where it belongs...off the list.
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -2/+1They ruined LOTR with the last one, too much love, caring, sharing, birthing, bonding, in the last few scenes. No one even appears to have suffered from the whole ordeal!
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -2/+3Funny how you put Lord of the Rings and garbage in the same sentence, I would have just moved some of those words around.
- Misanthrope, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Well of COURSE! It was popular, based on a classic novel which inspired an entire genre, amazingly acted and directed, had unparalleled visual effects and scenery, kept as true to the classic novels as could possibly be expected of a 3 hour mass market movie...what's NOT to hate??
That's just the perfect recipe for morons on the internet to complain and say it's "overrated".
God I hate you people.
- electricdragon, on 05/05/2008, -11/+8Buried for lack of decent foreign films like Metropolis or Сталкер.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -1/+11Metropolis is #16.
- Shiftyeyeddogg, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Also, Stalker sucked....
BAD- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2No way. Sure it was boring and slow but definitely didn't suck. In my opinion, as far as russian sci fi goes, KIN DZA DZA is one of the best.
- Shiftyeyeddogg, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Also, Stalker sucked....
- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4For those of us who aren't trying to get "im cool" points, "Сталкер" is Stalker.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2pfft, like we all can't read Cyrillic.
- yacks, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1I though it was Cranked
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -1/+11Metropolis is #16.
- Shirly, on 05/05/2008, -3/+10Dugg for This Is Spinal Tap.
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1for the inclusion of one highly acclaimed film in a list of 100 you dugg this..
- Yeshuah, on 05/11/2008, -0/+0I'm was really suprised, yet happy, to see This is Spinal Tap on there. I never thought that movie was recognized well enough. This list most definately needs some tweaking though. I could go on but I'll spare you.
- stonebone4, on 05/05/2008, -5/+2Haven't read it all yet, but dugg for a major publication finally SingTFU and not putting the same tired crap in the top 5.
- thaglove10, on 05/05/2008, -2/+10The subheader says this one is different. How is picking Casablanca as number one different? They must be talking about how they mixed it up so masterfully after that
/sarcasm - 9bpm9, on 05/05/2008, -12/+8The Life of Brian at 40?
I wasn't taking this list seriously after I saw a few rankings, but a Monty Python movie as one of the greatest movies of all time? It was funny (Always look on the bright side of a liiiiiife), but a Monty Python movie? Really?- Witchdoktor, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1A Monty Python movie and one of the greatest pieces of religious criticism...
- Danktolker, on 05/05/2008, -12/+21The Big Lewboski isn't just the greatest movie of all time, it is the greatest work of art ever created by mankind.
- Rotzooi, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Stop pissing on my rug.
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1and stop drinking my milkshake
- nextexiter, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2The Big Lebowski should be named patron saint for useless people.
- Rotzooi, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Stop pissing on my rug.
- WhipTail, on 05/05/2008, -3/+10PULP FICTION #59?!?!?
- jameshickmott, on 05/05/2008, -10/+5Its a little overated. Though still deserves to be on the top 100. #59 isn't too bad.
- TheThirdLevel, on 05/05/2008, -1/+8ENGLISH, *****, DO YOU SPEAK IT?
- jameshickmott, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Atleast it was on the list, fight club didn't even get a spot.
- billymonster, on 05/05/2008, -3/+1no boondock saints, donnie darko, fight club, or memento?
file this under 'buried'
- billymonster, on 05/05/2008, -3/+1no boondock saints, donnie darko, fight club, or memento?
- tmattoneill, on 05/05/2008, -6/+3I agree. How did that piece of crap make it on this list?
- tenspeedogbb, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2WhipTail said exactly what I was thinking the whole time.
- SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -5/+3Yeah, #59 is about 500 points higher than it deserved too.
- DamnMan, on 05/05/2008, -8/+17Why the hell do the Fight Club comments keep getting dug down? Is there something people find unsettling about an entire nation of malcontent corporate slaves raising up to combat modern capitalism/consumerism? I can't imagine why it wouldn't be on the list.
- jameshickmott, on 05/05/2008, -6/+1Fight club should be #3. E.T = WTF.
- Abomonog, on 05/05/2008, -8/+12Because after all is said and done the movie still sucked. Yeah it had a cool factor, but it sucked and everyone knows this. Think about it. The Road Warrior rocked and should have been included in this list, but probably wasn't because of crappy plot and production values (it has both). But who cares? We still loved it enough to make it one of the ten most repetitively run movies on television today. Yeah, Fight Club was a great movie. But it sucked balls and that's the fact.
- loopis, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4You sound like you have a split personality as well. First you say it sucks, then it is cool, then great, but then sucks balls.
- FinalPizzaHut, on 05/05/2008, -4/+5Fight Club is overrated. A good movie, sure, but not great.
- cathars1s, on 05/05/2008, -4/+5No one dislikes Fight Club because of its message. I thought the message was stupid but I still liked the movie. I also realize that it's far from a cinematic masterpiece. It's overrated. It really is.
Just because your favorite movie isn't on the list doesn't mean the list is biased. - SuperWinner, on 05/05/2008, -6/+4Fight Club only appeals to a very small segment, boys between the ages of 14 and 14 and a half.. thats why.
- Misanthrope, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1I just don't even see how that makes sense. It's not even a well thought out remark. What about that movie would appeal to a 14 year old boy? The fighting? There really wasn't that much fighting. I mean...do you even HAVE an argument or do you just like making that retarded comment to get people like me mad?
You're not that intelligent. I think you need to come to grips with that.
- Lukesed, on 05/05/2008, -3/+4Fight Club is the ultimate monument to hypocrisy. Everything about it exemplifies what the message of the film is against. A movie about muscular men punching each other for fun and blowing ***** up. Think about it. It even has product placement for ***** sake.
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1people like fight club for the same reasons they like ufc, people beat the ***** out of each other. there is no other artistic appreciation going on. if they enjoyed the story so much then the book would have sold millions upon millions more copies. fight club is a good movie, its just touted a great by so many people for so many wrong reasons.
- jameshickmott, on 05/05/2008, -6/+34Why isn't Epic Movie, Catwoman or Date Movie on this list?
- addysonclark, on 05/05/2008, -0/+9THIS MAN IS RIGHT
- bstockwell, on 05/05/2008, -0/+12after seeing point break I expected the whole list to be a joke
- doshindude, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Meet the Spartans?
- terrablebyte, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Surely Snakes on a Plane deserves to be in the top 4?
- saulhudson, on 05/05/2008, -3/+16where is memento or Oldboy?
- samuraix98, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2both fantastic films
- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4I agree. Oldboy was one of the best films I've seen in a LONG time. Definitely the best out of that thematic "trilogy". Korea is pumping out some AWESOME movies.
- haiduz, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1old boy its probably the best, but lady vergeance is certainly just as good a movie IMHO
- apollomurga, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Did he screw is daughter?
- Kurando, on 05/05/2008, -5/+25No Lord of Rings... No Forest Gump... No Pulp Fiction... No Citizen Kane at all... No Fight Club... No Schindler's List... And how is There Will be Blood #2?
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -0/+11Wow, completely forgot Schindler's List.
Who made this list? The 15 year old daughter of the editor?- FearisFailure, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Pulp Fiction was on there...It was in the 60's I think
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2Oh that's cool, a 15 year old girl has better taste in films than you
- Monkeydew06, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Pulp Fiction did make the list at a shameful #59. But I do agree that There will be blood does not deserve #2, and the absence of those other movies was a major disappointment. I really wanted to see Back to the Future, Star Wars (the first one or return of the Jedi) etc etc...
- moogle516, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Pulp Fiction is #59
- tmattoneill, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3Pulp Fiction on a list of best films ever made and Citizen Kane being absent demonstrates, without a doubt, this is worthless article.
- loopis, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2A movie has to be out longer than a year to consider it #2, that is crap. The movie was good and all but I don't think anyone leaves that movie saying that was ***** great. I was more like hey you want to go bowling?
- Kurando, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1I am sorry, I didn't relize Pulp Fiction was 59, my mistake, however I think it deserves a higher spot.
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1there will be blood deserves its spot. im not claiming to be some sort of visionary but people will realize this in the coming years.
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -0/+11Wow, completely forgot Schindler's List.
- July272007, on 05/05/2008, -2/+27cough Shawshank Redemption cough
- darlingt, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Want a cough drop? :)
- July272007, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Thanks. Mmmm crunchy. What do you know it is fixed. Thanks darlingt. Now I can write much more clearly thanks to darlingt cough drops. They are darlingticious :).
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1why does everyone have such a hardon for this film? people can never shut up about fight club, memento or shawshank.
- July272007, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Thats because they are good films. They don't stop being good films when people talk about them a lot.
- darlingt, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3Want a cough drop? :)
- Nayson, on 05/05/2008, -3/+28The IMDB top 250 is a much better list.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4s/better/nerdier
- bstockwell, on 05/05/2008, -1/+28Maybe the author has only seen 100 movies
- cderry, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Hahaha.
- Hoogs, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6Please don't show me E.T.'s hideous face like that. That creature has creeped me out my whole life.
- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2Agreed. The first scene with the alien's running through the woods, panting and screeching, it scared the ***** out of me as a kid.
- eliburford, on 05/05/2008, -4/+5I want to see the Truman Show recognized more. This list doesn't seem to very accurate though. Maybe it was completely put together by just one person.
- Haz63, on 05/05/2008, -11/+4Stanley Jubrick?
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -9/+3Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is #9!
This is a good list.- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Good movie, MAYBE deserves to be in the top 100, but greater than The Godfather? Citizen Kane? The Shawshank Redemption? Schindler's List?
No, not at all.- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I think so. That's just one person's opinion though.
The concept was brilliant, the acting was superb, the colors, the camerawork, the soundtrack... It just gushes emotion from beginning to end.
Since this is a very diverse list, it makes sense that at least one design-heavy arty-farty film should be in the top ten, and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind is the king of emo films.
If you just don't like that kind of film I can understand, but for what it is you have to admit it's insanely great. - tmattoneill, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Um. NO. It is NOT one person's opinion. This article was published as "The Times' Top 100" and includes opinions from numerous contributors.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1My post is one person's opinion.
- BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2lol don't worry he seems about 13, I don't think you should have taken insult.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I think so. That's just one person's opinion though.
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Good movie, MAYBE deserves to be in the top 100, but greater than The Godfather? Citizen Kane? The Shawshank Redemption? Schindler's List?
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -2/+25HAHAHAHA seriously, Point Break in the top 100 but not Shawshank? That is completely ridiculous and, in my opinion, completely invalidates this list. The Shawshank Redemption, at the very least, is top 20.
Also, Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind is ranked AHEAD of the Godfather?!?!?! E.T is #3?!?!?!- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Point Break deserves honorable mention for being the only movie in which Keanu Reeves comes close to acting.
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2By that logic "Good Will Hunting" should be on this list as being the only movie Ben Affleck ever comes close to acting in.
Which, ironically, is a better movie than Point Break :)- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Have you seen Chasing Amy?
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2By that logic "Good Will Hunting" should be on this list as being the only movie Ben Affleck ever comes close to acting in.
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Point Break deserves honorable mention for being the only movie in which Keanu Reeves comes close to acting.
- doshindude, on 05/05/2008, -1/+10Buried for being on 5+ pages...
- DrStrangeLover, on 05/05/2008, -0/+15No Dr. Strangelove? The Apartment, Adventures of Robin Hood, Miracle Worker, Diary of Anne Frank, Fiddler on the Roof, The Great Escape, The Thing, The Virgin Spring, Pyscho, Rocky... Most terrible of all, Network! And I loved "There will Be Blood," but #2? 0_o
- jackieokennedy, on 05/05/2008, -2/+12top 100 american/western/white mainstream movies?
But then again i read digg and i see people asking for "Pulp Fiction" and "Fight Club" ...
where are Bresson, tarkovsky, bergman, kiarostami, kurosawa .... ?
At least put Seven Samurai in, this one usually goes into these mainsteam lists ....- electricdragon, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Tarkovsky and Kurosawa.
- weaselonfire, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2They had Rashomon by Kurosawa.
- apollomurga, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Dugg for inconspicuous Russian/Eastern European names.
- FearisFailure, on 05/05/2008, -9/+2Were the ***** is CLERKS?!?! or how about Monty Python and the Holy Grail?!?! or Transformers!! Gladiator? I could go on and on well at least Blazing Saddles made the list along with Some Like It Hot..
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5"/sarcasm" after you mention Transformers?
No?....FAIL - haiduz, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1im afraid this guy is honestly not being sarcastic
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5"/sarcasm" after you mention Transformers?
- Hangly, on 05/05/2008, -3/+10This list didn't have my favorite movie in it so I threw a tantrum and buried the whole thing.
- Asvetic, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Hey, we have a decent rating system right here, why not make our own list? Just add a reply with the title of your favorite movie (nice and simple) and the rest of Digg can either vote it up or down. Everyone gets one vote per title, obviously.
- glxyjones, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9Shawshank Redemption
- Asvetic, on 05/05/2008, -6/+3Fight Club
- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -4/+2ROBOCOP
- Asvetic, on 05/05/2008, -2/+5The Big Lebowski
- zomgflamer, on 05/05/2008, -2/+4City of God

- bluenash, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- bluenash, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Searching for Bobby Fischer
- skaughtm, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1movie made in america
- Abomonog, on 05/05/2008, -5/+4No Airplane. No Monty Python and the Holy Grail (but Life of Brian?). No Apocalypse Now and One Flew over the Cuckoo's nest was WAY down the list from where it should be. No Saving Private Ryan. The Towering Inferno but no Poseidon Adventure (the disaster movie that made the really big money in the 70's)? Nothing from the Pink Panther series even though any one of the first 4 would have done. Could go on and on....
Buried.- FearisFailure, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Full Metal Jacket? Apocalypse Now I forgot about that one.. Good Call!!
- paidhima, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Apocalypse Now is #15.
- rezist, on 05/05/2008, -9/+3There will be blood @ #2? That was one of the worst films I have seen this year... as a film student I see anywhere from 4 or more films a week.
- Rain12913, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Good luck in the film industry with taste like that....lol
- rezist, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1HAHA! Which film industry? Hollywood? I haven't discussed the film with anyone that enjoyed it as a whole. This group of individuals includes people ranging from an ivy league grad with 15 books selling on Amazon currently to a guy I grew up with who was recently living under a bridge. I'm quite happy with the work I have done so far, the $, and the path I'm on with respects to my career. Have fun with contrived scripts and mass produced cinematography/editing. The screenplay for Juno was also horrific!
- Rain12913, on 05/05/2008, -1/+1Good luck in the film industry with taste like that....lol
- Lusus, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4The very fact that there is only 1 top 100 list on the times is silly. I mean film comparisons and ranking cannot be made between, say Star Wars and Casablanca, or Forest Gump and Lord of the Rings. You cannot rank one over the other since the films are mutually exclusive in their content, message, and intent.
Besides, what criteria did they actually use... personal preference?!?!?! - rjc1187, on 05/05/2008, -5/+6How about The Aviator? I think its a highly under rated movie, and should have been on the list. Anybody agree?
- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1That film was good, but of all of Scorsese's films, The Departed is MUCH better. I didn't notice that one on the list either.
Aviator gets points for having BRENT SPINER in it though. - allan17, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Come in with the milk.
- cderry, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Come in with the milk.
- apeman300, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1After GoodFellas, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull, it's my favorite Scorsese pic!
- Iztikeit, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0It's a good late night flick but it isn't innovative, provocative or "special". It's just a very solid movie doing things other movies have done better and before. Aviator is a very fun movie though, good acting.
- chantron, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1That film was good, but of all of Scorsese's films, The Departed is MUCH better. I didn't notice that one on the list either.
- jackieokennedy, on 05/05/2008, -3/+1What's very sad is that these kind of mainstream lists will have a huge impact on cinema in the future.
Because people will feel comforted into their basic choices and continue to think that Fight Club or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" or " The Breakfast Club" is important cinema.
Then they will continue to feed off the crap Hollywood produces (because when "There Will Be Blood" becomes a classic masterpiece, then "Transformers" becomes a "good movie").
I think the media MUST put out lists and reviews of classic movies from Bresson, Bunuel or Antonioni so the people reach for higher quality, and the cinema industry will be forced to go for higher quality production.
These stupid list are what's hurting the industry. Then you have a HUGE cultural fracture happening, where the mass will get dumber and dumber, spending their cash and stupidity, and a few people who have access to higher quality program.- aDFP, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I agree with what you're saying, but Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine ARE important Cinema, and Breakfast Club is a cheesy feel-good rebellion movie. Personally, I was put off by the this-is-how-teens-really-feel message from a guy in his mid-thirties, but hey, compared to his later work, this is mature.
There are many lists that honour the classic directors, and I applaud the Times for trying to come up with a list that balances greatness with accessibility. I didn't say I agreed with their choices, but I respect their intent. - BLiNk0, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2I'm sorry did you say Transformers becomes a "good movie," I really hope you were quoting a retarded person.
- aDFP, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I agree with what you're saying, but Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine ARE important Cinema, and Breakfast Club is a cheesy feel-good rebellion movie. - MCGrunge1, on 05/05/2008, -2/+3I can't even find the list on the page...
- MCDupree, on 05/05/2008, -11/+5Dugg for There Will Be Blood @ #2.
- slapded, on 05/05/2008, -4/+3point break should have been 1
- aDFP, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I should digg you for giving me the biggest laugh I've had in weeks.
- aDFP, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
- Lusus, on 05/05/2008, -3/+0I can hear it now: "Hillary Clinton calls JackieOKennedy and "elitist" for her comments on Digg !!!"
- lifeisgooooood, on 05/05/2008, -4/+1IMDB list is better because it also has the best of foreign movies ! ! ! ! !
But my list is the best :D -
