- wolfzombie, on 10/10/2007, -11/+38I'm still sad that Grindhouse wasn't as successful as it should have been. I'm saddened even more they split the movies up on DVD. Like the article relates to, Grindhouse really was a partial nail in the coffin for making movies which don't fit the "teen thriller killer" mold or sequel train.
- sinbonders, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21We can all hope it's a horror movie featuring dick and fart jokes.
- SlamShut, on 10/10/2007, -26/+44Grindhouse's failure proved only that the public doesn't want to see three consecutive hours of utterly ***** movies. And that's what they were-- especially Tarantino's *****-awful "Death Proof." What a ***** ball of *****.
And yeah, I get it. They were both supposed to be an homage to the old shlock horror films. But Rodriguez's film was too cutesy and self-aware, and Tarantino's was just a wall of unwatchable *****. And I grew up watching the old cheapie horror films, seeing many of them in the theater. Those old movies have a sort of cruddy charm, the kind that can't be faked with big-name actors and overwrought talky dialogue. Grindhouse as a whole was as fake as a tranny's *****.
As far as Kevin Smith is concerned, somewhere around Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back I lost the ability to overlook the fact that his films are amateurish exercises in stilted dialogue. You'd think that after five or six films, Smith would have learned how to do something besides have his friends sit in front of a camera and stiffly recite the dick jokes he wrote last night, but he hasn't. There's no natural rhythym or pacing in his movies, and at this point, we can assume that there never will be. So if the Weinstein Co wants to pass on Red State, you can romantically assume that kevin Smith has somehow magically come up with some sort of arty, 'brave' foray into horror that 'nobody has the courage to make...' or maybe Weinstein is just sick of funding Kevin Smith's lousy films. - Xertion, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25Grindhouse was awsome. Loved both the movies and the fake comming attractions.
I am willing to bet on a special double feature release of the films after the initial release of them seperately. It's the way they maximize profit. Make you buy the same thing twice. Which is why I always wait a few months before buying new DVDs. Got tired of haveing 2 of my favorites. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21*****, this is the only film I've been looking forward to since I heard about it last year. Hollywood needs more unique films instead of ***** horrible remakes and ***** comedies.
- SlamShut, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16See, it's not the fact that the material is scatological that turns me off with Kevin Smith. I love a good round of toilet humor or sex jokes, if they can be delivered with timing and skill. I think Judd Apatow's films cover a lot of the same ground that Kevin Smith does, but Apatow manages to do it without making it seem like Amateur Night.
The thing is, I want to like Kevin Smith's movies. As a guy, he's a lot of fun to watch. I enjoyed watching the "Evening With Kevin Smith" DVD-- he comes across as a genuine guy. And when I went out and bought the Clerks II DVD sight unseen, I was hoping that he finally would have managed to tighten up his cinematic skills to the point where the film wouldn't be as clumsy and stilted as Clerks--- but it's the same ***** movie, only in color, and it's not as surprising because we've basically seen Smith cover this same ground already. I did sit down one night and watch the "Making Of" feature on the Clerks II DVD, and you know what? It's better than the movie.
This means that the film flunks a very basic litmus test for a film, one that was originally suggested by the late Gene Siskel: if you're watching a film, and you think to yourself that watching footage of the same actors just sitting around unscripted and having lunch would be more entertaining, then that film is a failure. This is specifically the test that Smith's films fail. I like Kevin Smith, and I like the people in his movies... but when the camera starts rolling and the script is being read, it all falls apart. - greekgoat91, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14wow, this is the first time that The Weinstein Co. has said no to a Kevin Smith movie.
- Radar3D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10He was the bomb in Phantoms, yo.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Red State is sort of a non-gore horror movie from what Kevin Smith says, maybe even more of a thriller. What's interesting is that, to me, despite the enormous running time Grindhouse lived up to exactly what it said it would be and that made me love it through and through. Unfortunately, its poor performance means that the Weinsteins are being smart. No matter how great something sounds on paper, at the end of the day it's about how much you have in the bank. Everybody's got a price.
- Gtitian, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12you speak too definitively, many people, myself included love exploitation films.
- MatchStick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9***** you for heckling. If you don't like a film, then ***** LEAVE... some of us really enjoyed it, you don't have to ruin the experience for us, *****.
- djphatjive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7How was he responsible for it? He didn't write it, He didn't direct it, He just put his producer credit into it because he is friends with Brian.
- Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Actually, I think Vulgar was one of his friend's projects. He helped get it made and had a small cameo, but he wasn't the writer or director. If you didn't like it (it's a weird movie) blame Bryan Johnson, the writer and director.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Ohh, Phantoms like a mother *****!
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8And the villain in Red State: Pillow Pants
- sleepwalkers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Wow, that sounds like some really harsh heckling...
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -6/+12I love *****!
- bib4tuna, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6grindhouse was no failure. it was advertised wrong. it was an indie film all the way and they tried to push a 4 hour QT throwback on a bunch of frisbee tossing brosefs and 14 year old txt msgrs
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Oh is it? I didn't realize that, even though it's in the first sentence of the article.
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'm on the internet and I'm angry. GRRR.
- Bansuri, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7slam, I'm trying to digg you up. Thanks for saying it. Maybe ONE person will understand.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5yes. you are doomrat. you are ***** a retard.
- bagboyrebel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8maybe not intelligent, but definitely unique and funny.
- orfilms, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Clerks 2 FAR from tanked. The film had a $5 million budget, and mader $26 million worldwide. The film has also made over $40 million on DVD.
- sinbonders, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Tanked compared to most mainstream movies. It still made a lot more in theaters and DVD than it cost to make.
I think people are overlooking that The Weinsteins are actually doing "Zack and Miri Make a Porno."
Do you think they're afraid it's going to bomb? It won't cost much, and will make a good return. That's what producers want.
This decision has nothing to do with Kevin's previous success. It has to do with the type of movie's likely success. - SlamShut, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6"Dogma was a great movie because it combined all sorts of religions and really showed how ***** stupid they were"
Um... that's not what Dogma did at all. It was really only about Catholicism, and I don't remember any mention in the film of any religion outside Christianity, and at no point in the film was it pointed out "how ***** stupid they were."
If anything, Dogma is a pro-Christian film, because it argues that God, the devil, Jesus. and all of the figures of the Christian belief system are actually real.
So to quote Defuser, "Great job there, chief." - InfiniteNothing, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I liked Jersey Girl. Seemed very unpretentious.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Can't really blame them. Kevin Smith's reputation is comedy. People would goto this movie expecting Star Wars jokes, tales of sex with animals and some guys selling pot. Even if it's a great movie it's risky because a lot of people will be upset that it isn't more of the same. Unfortunately these are the people who buy movie tickets and DVDs so they dictate what gets made.
- Ansible, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So... why is this "the movie hollywood is scared to make?" I didn't get much of a clue about that from the article.
- keithmcbride, on 10/10/2007, -1/+51937? i dont think so
- iarann, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5You do realize that Kevin Smith himself admits he is responsible for his share of ***** comedies right? Jersey Girl wasn't exactly the Citizen Kane of the 21st century.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5The problem with your statement, is Kevin Smith could make Red State with a small budget, and it would bank greatly. Look at Clerks, most people have faith in Kevin Smith, and if he released a film on a smaller budget then say, Dogma, I believe it would roll in the cash and become successful just like Clerks did. We're not including or talking about Jersey Girl now. :)
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7You're just upset he pissed on the LotR trilogy.
- Sicness, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yea, box office poison...they've financed almost every one of his films because he makes them no money what so ever. Someone buy this retard a clue.
- kickcows, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5he should take out a bunch of credit cards like he did for 'clerks' and make the movie himself.
- adamchristopher, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Weinsteins being smart? I consider that them being sellouts. Try to make movies rather than a profit.
- case42tlc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This article gives zero information about the script, it just assumes you've already heard about it. Total *****.
- anti_hax0r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Slam - I'm with you. I love how he transmits the dialogue in every scene he is in by looking at who will be talking next. I don't know why he is so adored by the slackers. Oh yes I do, he is their Michael Jordan.
- Sicness, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Again, you think they keep shelling out cash for his movies because they lose money? You do know they are financing Zack and Miri Make a Porno right? You don't like his flicks fine, but for god sakes pull your head out of your ass and use a little common sense.
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 10/10/2007, -7/+9Kevin Smith isn't nearly as good a filmmaker as everyone makes him out to be. I can assure you that he would fail as a horror director. There are 2 kinds of horror films....really ***** bad/cheesy ones (Saw) and really ***** great horror films (Cannibal Holocaust, Dawn of the Dead (1978)...etc). Smith doesn't have what it takes to make a great horror film...
And all Grindhouse proved was that Tarantino's glory days are over, he better find a new movie to rip off quick. Rodriguez did fairy well...but it wasn't my taste. - Bansuri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Logical fallacy.
"He must be good because you can't do it." - acidbathfan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3They already have a horror movie called red state that was made for tv that is broadcast 24 hours a day on the Fox News channel that seems to be never ending
- duckduckswan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3alright how about something important other than bitching about whether or not his previous movies have any merit. what is the premise of this "Red State"? I saw nothing about the actual movie on this website, I was hoping they'd at least say what it was about so perhaps I could see why they canned it.
- fremeer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2all kevin smith movies around 10-20 million in box office. Thats cause his fans all go to watch it. The rest and majority of his paycheck then comes from DVD sales since alot of ppl that go watch the movie than buy the dvd because he tries to offer more on it. If he made a 5 million movie he would make a profit straight away.
- kevinosborne, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6damn but there's a lot of bitching here.
when did everyone become such a critic? where the ***** do you get off kicking this guy when he's down?
i've liked some of this guys movies; Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl to be exact.
don't much care for the others, but I realise that just because something is to my liking, it ain't necessarily to others'.
doesn't give me the right to say 'worst movie ever!' just because i didn't like it.
i mean lets face it my opinion counts for *****. oh, and so does yours.
so shut the ***** up and watch what you like and don't watch what you don't.
if you're such a ***** movie meister go and make your own ***** film you *****.
oh, and i like Kevin Smith's blog. he's funny, self-deprecating, and seemingly pretty genuine.
unlike most of you shrill self-important whiners.
***** you very much. - tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Hey that's the same reason I stopped buying movies and started using USENET! Funny!
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Man you must be kidding me. My family and I would all go to the drive in on weekends when I was younger and watch all those b-horror movies. I would never have had my zombie lust if it wasn't for those films. It suprises me that people don't enjoy that genre.
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I would rather make both.
- whiterussian, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4You're assumption is retarded. I don't know anybody who liked Dogma and none of my friends were offended by it for it's blasphemy, but because it was a really ***** movie with forced, unnatural dialogue and stupid jokes (which can be said about all of Kevin Smith's movies).
- koonchu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I like Smith's movies, but I gotta digg you up for such a heartfelt comment.
