- Wrabbit26, on 11/29/2008, -2/+72I think the author missed the point about "Contact." It wasn't a movie about aliens. It was about how Foster's character didn't believe in God. She couldn't grasp how the world could widely embrace something when there is no actual proof of his existence. Then she has an opportunity to meet real aliens and they take the form of her dad. When she gets back she learns that she was only gone for a second, but she remembers being gone for hours. She is so convinced that her experience was real and not in her mind that she goes in front of Congress to testify. The only problem is she has no proof and now she is asking the world to have faith in her.
I thought the ending was right on the money. - swik, on 11/29/2008, -1/+59Agree with all of them but Castaway, I thought it was a pretty good ending. I mean, if you spent so much time on an islander and had to stare death in the face at basically every turn wouldn't coming back to reality be a pretty big blah? Especially when you find out when you die (for real or not) life still goes on without you?
- MMusick, on 11/28/2008, -2/+57The worst thing about A.I. is knowing how much better it would've been in Kubrick's hands. Such a shame.
- kinseyincanada, on 11/29/2008, -0/+52wasnt Peter Jacksons King Kong ending the same as the original? so how is it a bad ending?
- nmanguy, on 11/29/2008, -2/+47They forgot "I am Legend". Those ***** who made it just copied the name of the book, and changes the vampires to "OMG ZOMBAYS".
- chaos7, on 11/29/2008, -1/+40i love Contact's ending. most people don't get it. it wasn't really her father and none of what she saw on that "beach" was real. the aliens have much more technology than we do. they went into her mind and used her own memories to communicate to her. they chose to communicate to her through the image of her father. this is out of the box and brilliant. i'd rather have that ending than her talking to a green alien with 3 tentacles.
- shenanigoats, on 11/28/2008, -2/+39The Planet of the Apes ending doesn't even begin to make sense.
- maqikelefant, on 11/29/2008, -3/+33South Park totally beat them to the punch on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
"They're...RAPING HIM!" - bonk2k, on 11/29/2008, -0/+27The difference is that Morgan Freeman was the one explaining the aliens' demise in War of the Worlds. He can talk about anything and it will inevitably be awesome.

- shenanigoats, on 11/28/2008, -1/+22"I am tempted at this point to issue a Spoiler Warning and engage in discussion of several crucial events in the movie that would seem to be physically, logically and dramatically impossible, but clever viewers will be able to see for themselves that the movie's plot has a hole that is not only large enough to drive a truck through, but in fact does have a truck driven right through it."
- Roger Ebert - JGUSMC7, on 11/29/2008, -0/+19I totally agree with "It".
What about The entire Matrix Trilogy. You killed Neo...WHAT! - ChromaVita, on 11/29/2008, -0/+19I don't see how people can get upset with King Kong's ending. It was the same ending as the movie he remade. Could you imagine the ***** he would have gotten if he had remade a classic movie, but changed the ending?
Indiana Jones 4 did totally gargle balls though. - MiChuhSuh, on 11/29/2008, -0/+19Ridiculous endings can also be awesome.
Example: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The ending is both ridiculous and ridiculously awesome. - Louis11, on 11/29/2008, -0/+18Of all the things to bitch about in Castaway, they don't ask what the hell was in the box he never opened?
- Rikushix, on 11/29/2008, -0/+16It doesn't matter what was in the box. The whole point was, delivering the parcel was his only motivation. Deep inside, he didn't see his wife staying dedicated to him if there was ever a chance of being rescued. So the only thing that kept him fighting for survival was the box he didn't open.
I'd like to know what was in there as well but I think the point was that the audience wasn't supposed to know, nor care, either. - HitandRun, on 11/29/2008, -8/+23I couldn't agree more with Sunshine being on this list. The last third of the movie was downright terrible.
- quasipolymath, on 11/29/2008, -1/+16Germs killed the aliens in War of the Worlds. While it is possible to believe that aliens could have left this contingency out of the plan to conquer earth, it is hard to believe that a radically advanced civilization could not detect water, especially considering the hazard it poses to the aliens in "Signs".
- ShazerFox, on 11/29/2008, -0/+15The author missed the point of the ending entirely on AI. They weren't aliens, for crying out loud, they were ROBOTS! After the earth froze they were all that was left...thus their interest in the boy who "actually knew living humans."
Stupid list. - oboshoe, on 11/29/2008, -3/+17Independence Day should have made the list, as well as "I am legend"
The computer virus thing in ID4 was just lame. And legend, the alternate ending was far superior.
(funny now that I think about it, both are will smith movies, with a virus as a major component) - Rikushix, on 11/29/2008, -0/+14How can you complain about Monty Python and the Holy Grail? It is the veritable definition of absurdist humor. The ending is perfect. They've spent two hours dicking around with the French, a killer rabbit and some really horny maidens and for all their troubles they get thrown into the paddywagon by the fuzz for making such a grand mess of it all. It's hilarious.
- SanTe, on 11/29/2008, -1/+15Buried article for Contact. Contact was an amazingly good adaptation of Carl Sagan's wonderful novel, and the movie's ending a) matches the book's ending, and b) rocks. Sorry the article's author didn't understand it. Would he have felt better if the Predator showed up and ripped her spine out?
Actually, that woulda been pretty cool. - Phelyx, on 11/29/2008, -4/+17Why do so many people think those are "aliens" at the end of A. I.? Weren't they paying attention? That really was a great movie, but you have to THINK about it or it doesn't work.
- budgeysmuggler, on 11/29/2008, -3/+15 Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, what do mean a bad ending the whole damn thing was a pile of *****
- Wilsomatic, on 11/29/2008, -0/+12*Spoiler* Matches, Knives and Anesthetic.
- batmanz, on 11/29/2008, -2/+14I was fine with the Cast Away ending and Contact's ending. But yeah, King Kong and Indiana Jones 4 just sucked.
- geldan01, on 11/29/2008, -0/+12I also like that the government knows about an 18 hours recording of white noise but decides to keep a tight secret. So only the US government knows about the aliens, plus Foster's character of course.
- mfhayes, on 11/29/2008, -1/+12So true. RIP.
I might have to disagree with the choice of Sunshine on this list. The 3rd act was lame (B-Horror chase scene) but I wouldn't call that the ending. I really liked the last 5 min of that movie (without the crazed sun-man).
I Am Legend should be on this list. They should have used the other ending.
And if we're talking about M. Night movies, The Happening takes the cake on terrible endings, because we all know that true love between terrible main characters will calm angry plants. - dcoolidge, on 11/28/2008, -2/+13DAMN YOU! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!!!!!!!
- hollywoodphony, on 11/29/2008, -0/+10I don't know if 'depressing' necessarily equates to 'ridiculous'. But I agree that the ending of AI made me feel like I was never going to be happy again.
- geldan01, on 11/29/2008, -0/+10Ahh there you go. They're not aliens... they're robots that have evolved incredibly far, so much so that they are now sentient. See them as David's descendants. They survived long after the humans were all gone, but they evolved awareness AFTER that, so they're looking to David to try and catch what made humans.... Humans. Quite touching, really.
But yeah. Thinking does help. - quasipolymath, on 11/29/2008, -0/+10* SPOILERS *
You mean having a religious epiphany followed by endangering the lives of what may be two of the last few people on earth by letting off a hand grenade in the room is not ridiculous? - DrunkenSavior, on 11/29/2008, -0/+10A larger box.
- NathanielJ, on 11/29/2008, -2/+11Dugg for Sunshine and AI. What the ***** were they thinking with those?
As for Signs... why is it that people constantly bitch about the aliens being weakened by water, yet no one bitches about War of the Worlds when it has basically the exact same ending? At least in Signs there were clues along the way. In War of the Worlds it just cut out 2/3 of the way through the movie and said "oh, and then those aliens that were kicking our ass? yeah they died 'cause of atmosphere or something". - 9bpm9, on 11/29/2008, -1/+10Well, the fact that War of the Worlds was written pre 19th century, when the best weapon in the world was a rifle, and when it was in the hands of a good soldier, could fire it at extremely quick speeds. But of course, this wasn't going to kill an alien.
The entire reason for the germs killing the aliens is because it was the only way possible, when you're living in world where horse pulled carriages are the norm, to have the aliens die.
Now I thought the remake was complete idiocy. I'm sorry, but we do have the weapons to stop an alien race like there was in War of the Worlds. It just couldn't make me believe anything that was going on in the entire movie. - vegx, on 11/29/2008, -3/+12Unbreakable is a great movie.
- geodescent, on 11/29/2008, -0/+9Some crappy metal sculpture.
- imandrew, on 11/28/2008, -0/+9They hit the nail on the head here. I especially agree with IT!, I remember the first time I saw this I was 11 years old and it scared the hell out of me.. Until the end then that just ruined it for me and I have never found IT scary since.
- brownsound00, on 11/29/2008, -0/+8It's an article from spike... which has been proven to be a viable source of douchebaggery on the internet. i wasn't really expecting an intelligent list anyways
- Drakoi, on 11/29/2008, -0/+8DAMN YOU! GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!!!!! *fixed
- 9bpm9, on 11/29/2008, -0/+7Get the DVD, the alternate ending is much better. Of course these two endings completely and entirely change what you think of the creatures in the movie, and neither of them even have the same ending as the book, but the alternate ending really changes the perspective you have on the movie.
- seantubridy, on 11/29/2008, -0/+7Robots.
- seantubridy, on 11/29/2008, -0/+7Well, the Planet of the Apes remake was total crap, but to be fair, the ending was closer to the ending of the book than the original movie ending. The main character lands back on earth and it's a bunch of apes ruling it. I didn't really get that when I read the book either.
- inkswamp, on 11/29/2008, -1/+8You know, when you make a list of ridiculous movie endings, you should be sure you understand the point of all of them. Nothing in Contact indicated that the aliens wanted to give humans any particular info, especially of the edifying kind. It was hinted at that they wanted to see if humanity was technologically advanced enough to follow their instructions and meet with them. The alien in the form of Jodie Foster's dad even says that it's not humanity's time to learn more and that we're just taking our first steps. That was it. It was a test and a first contact.
And in fact, the movie's *true* ending comes afterward in the form of the faith vs. science question of her journey in the first place which was the undercurrent of the entire story anyway. Maybe I'm alone in this, but I found Contact to be one of the most satisfying endings to a movie I've ever seen.
And I'm so fed up with people conflating a celebrity's personal life with the characters they play. So what if they chose Matthew McConaughey for the role opposite Jodie Foster? I don't follow the off-screen antics of celebrities in general so I don't entirely know what the objection is, but I do know he fit the tone and look of that role exactly right. - WhoDoneIt, on 11/29/2008, -1/+8Was it because you didn't get the toy you wanted or was it because your friends couldn't sleep over?
- geodescent, on 11/29/2008, -2/+9Just so you know, the people digging you down thought Kung Fu Panda was a funny, entertaining film. Also, they should be shot.
- 9bpm9, on 11/29/2008, -2/+9Independence Day is a bad ass movie though.
- geodescent, on 11/29/2008, -1/+7In before 9/11 was an inside job
- Tryptomine, on 11/29/2008, -0/+6I liked the thematic ideas of Contact and Cast Away, but unfortunately I can't deny they were pretty damn boring compared to the rest of the movie.
