- steinalec, on 10/11/2007, -1/+55how about a top 10 most poorly assembled lists
- irishpunk, on 10/11/2007, -11/+59I don't think Harry Potter deserves to be ahead of Indiana Jones since Indy deserves better.
- Freshjive787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+48im tired of these poorly assembled top 10 lists.
- Rukaribe, on 10/11/2007, -5/+49This list sucks on many levels.
- xboxgamer91, on 10/11/2007, -6/+43Shrek? A powerful franchise? Are you kidding me?
- Seatback, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38I closed the window as soon as I saw a picture of Captain Jack.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38The Matrix over Shrek anyday of the week
How about Rocky, The Terminator, Rambo... - Ryudo2k9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Shrek? Harry Potter? Jurassic Park?
Buried as inaccurate ..no way those go over Star Trek or Back to the Future or Terminator,Rocky, Karate Kid ,Pink Panther and so many more..etc...
This list truly sucks. - kaijunexus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20*****!
Where is "Godzilla" on this list?! That's a 53 year old, 28-film franchise recognized worldwide! It's influenced every monster film ever produced since the 50's, spawned untold numbers of rip-off's, spin-off's, and even a big-budget American remake (crap though it may have been), is still deeply ingrained in our cultural history (not just America, folks, but the entire world), and is even making something of an underground comeback!
I won't hide the fact that I'm a HUGE Godzilla fan, and that may bias my opinion to some degree...but come on! That film franchise's impact can not be ignored! - DimensionalPunk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14What is the point to this? This should be re-titled "Some Guy's Favorite Movie Franchises".
I'm sick of people turning opinions into rankings. - kaijunexus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I think this article is vastly more forgivable once you look at the website it's hosted on...
"Film School Rejects"
Quite accurate... - someirishguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15If your going to use box office for comparison, then you need to adjust for inflation since the average ticket price was probably half or less what it is today then way back when. Here's a reference http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm So doing the quick math:
Indiana Jones Trilogy: $1,257,000,000
original Star Wars Trilogy: $2,400,000,000
Shrek Trilogy (so far) $997,400,000
LOTR Trilogy : $1,400,000,000
Probably at least another $150,000,000 each with DVD and VHS sales/rentals, so aside from Star Wars blowing everyone out of the water it really comes down to personal preference and lasting appeal. My biased opinion is that Shrek eventually gets lost in the shuffle of gee wiz animation while Indiana Jones falls in line with some of the classic Bond movies e.g. Thunderball or Gold Finger that people still watch over and over. - abid786, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15I agree. Why is Shrek on that list and not the Godfather series?
- 2thDec4y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12too many others out there...Terminator, Godfather, Rocky, Aliens
- Fr4nk2012, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15its inarguable that the most "powerful" film franchise on the planet is "Johnny Hungs adventures in sexy space". I think they have 28 sequels and something like 14 spinoffs.
- orp2000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Ok, anybody who says the Matrix sequels were well received has just lost all credibility with me. The second installment in the Matrix trilogy was so bad that the third one became a non-issue.
- Mc_Carter, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13I agree how is Shrek before Indiana Jones.
- Kugellehr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7star trek is worth more than this douche gives credit for.
- mattgo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Mad Max is missing also, in the honorable mentions. The first two were great, "Thunderdome" was eh, that's 2 out of 3. Beats "The Matrix" Trilogy.
- subxero37, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@sfpfc: Now, is that stupid-ass communists? Or stupid ass-communists? You'll be needing that hyphen if you want to get your point across.
- D3koy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Forget about Back to the Future, what about "The Land Before Time" series, If I'm not mistaken they are on number 58 now....
- billybob476, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Don't forget about "Merchandising, merchandising! Where the REAL money for the movie is made!"
I still want my Spaceballs: The Flame Thrower. - SillyRabbits, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7It seems like all these lists are thrown together by 16 year olds. Anything before 1990 doesn't even occur to them....
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm regardless what this article thinks Terminator, Aliens, Star Trek, X-Men, RAMBO, ROCKEY, Mission Impossible Movies, Born Identify series, BatMan have all been "Powerful Movie Franchises" in History at one time or another.I'm guessing purely fanboy markdom all over this one. Not to doubt his picks, just the article seems to claim as if only these few have been the top 10. I might be noted that it should say Top 10 for the 2000.......
hell in it's day the Planet of the Apes movies were big time.....Any Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween movie in it's hay day. Hell even the Gremlins were a big movie franchise not only in movies but Toys and cloths......... Any Deadpool movie with Clint Eastwood......... Charles Bronson Death wish movie. Eddie Murphy Beverly Hills Cop........etc - kaijunexus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It insists upon itself.
- radu79, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4And if you mention Rocky, you should also mention Rambo. Especially that they are now working at Rambo 4.
- speedk0re, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9there’s one more secret I feel I have to share with you. I did not care for The Godfather
- neocr0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Indiana Jones deserves a higher place on that list, that much is certain.
@Falcyn, Spiderman is not the biggest commerical success of all time. Wake up. - kyoung989, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It appears that everyone is forgetting the power of merchandising. Taking that into account, Shrek, Harry Potter, Spider-man and Pirates certainly deserve a spot on this list.
- TKardinal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If you are going to publish a list called "The Most Powerful Movie Franchises", then you are making a claim to be objective. You cannot legitimately claim " I don’t like it" as a reason why it's not the most powerful; only that it's a reason it not on your favorite movie franchise list.
- IRoaChI, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5@radu70
Well a prequel is classed as part of the series, so the Hobbit would cancel your comment out. - theexit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Indiana Jones rocks so hard! He should have been way higher. And where is the Terminator? or Aliens? Those two are way better then Pirates.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Depp was solidified when he refused to join the "Brat Pack" after doing the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Edward Scissorhands just cemented his photo in the dictionary under the world "cool."
- Gorrondonuts, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I'm so glad you said this, after i read the article i ran for the comments to make sure i wasn't losing my mind. Maybe the entire consensus of the internet changed when I wasn't looking and they decided that the Matrix 2 & 3 were not absolutely horrible. The first movie was one of my favorite movies, I saw the second one, and convinced myself i liked it. I watched again and realized it sucked. I had to see the third one just to see if it got any better, and I have to say that I saw it in theaters once and haven't ever bothered to watch it again. I didn't watch the first one again for so long because the entire franchise had been scarred. After a year or two, I can now go back and watch one of my favorite movies because the memories of the movies that shall not be named have begun to fade from memory. *shudder*
- Oracle95, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Mad Max was interesting in that the first movie missed the radar until Road Warrior came out and then suddenly people discovered Mad Max in the video rental stores. (It's hard to compare older franchises with new when you consider that prior to Star Wars, there really wasn't a lot of merchandising. And before VCR's, a lot of good franchises didn't get the play time that say a "James Bond" or a "Planet of the Apes" movie got.)
- swhite76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I love Star Wars, but Lucas didn't invent the movie franchise. Something the author of this list doesn't seem to know.
What, nothing before Star Wars on this list? Godfather, Planet of the Apes, heck even Godzilla was big in its day.
Here's a much better list, done by Forbes, of the Most Lucrative Movie Franchises.
http://www.forbes.com/business/2005/06/15/batman-movies-franchises-cx_lh_lr_0615batman_2.html - RoloTomasie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"The Ten Most Ambiguously Connected Film Franchises in History"
- D3koy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8Harry Potter doesn't deserve to be above Indy?
http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide
He takes 4, 8 and 10!
Indy first comes in at around 50.... - AlbinoRaven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"MILF's gone wild". With at least 40 titles in it's roster and the fact the plot blends seemlessly from one film to another. It should be given a place on the list, at least spot number 11.
- bigfkncee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@kugellehr (#6930122)
agreed....he admits to not liking star trek so his list is biased
buried - diggbrian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Think you guys are missing the point of the word "franchise". Terminator, Back to the Future, Godfather, etc... are, if at all, hardly franchises. Yes, good movies, great movies but not powerful in the sense of marketing, fan base, etc... Actually, as awesome as the movie is, Indiana Jones shouldn't be in a list labeled "powerful franchises".
- smek2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, what do you expect from a list featuring "Pirates" and "Spider-Man" but leaving out Matrix and Star Trek. The latter has more movies than any other mentioned franchises in the list and is left out because the author of that list simply "don’t like Star Trek". Way to go, wanna-be "Journalist" Neil Miller.
- Calcheesmo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I'd say switch out Shrek and Harry Potter for Terminator and Back to the Future. Star Wars is definitely the best though.
What about Mighty Ducks....quack! quack! Viva la Emelio Estevez ala Gordon Bombay!!! I'm watching it right now, and it makes me laugh...jajaja...in spanish. - tnvwboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No Conan!? CROM!!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ Oracle95:
Cudos for Planet of the Apes. - donkeyshow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Godfather, no doubt. Although I refuse to acknowledge anything made after II.
I would have even taken Blade... - rejectnation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Here is a follow up where you can vote for what you think is the Most Powerful Franchise in History: http://digg.com/movies/Vote_The_Most_Powerful_Movie_Franchise_in_History
