- JediCorran, on 11/06/2009, -0/+44the sequel is in the works. it's in the horror genre' though: "men who stare at goatse"
- sewalsh, on 11/06/2009, -2/+33PLEASE LET US OPT OUT OF DIGG TRENDS. IT'S ANNOYING.
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/06/2009, -3/+19I'm burying every single one of them that I see as my own personal protest.
- SinYakuza, on 11/06/2009, -3/+13same here too.
- AManWithNoName, on 11/06/2009, -1/+10When did this trending thing start? I think it's kinda a bad idea. Not because it's annoying (Which it vaguely is, but to get seriously annoyed by something inconsequential like that is just silly) but because it won't give an accurate portrayal of whether or not people like an article.
Look at it this way: Right now, there's a lot of blind diggers out there. People who digg based just on the headline/description. This is a serious problem, since it can cause horribly written articles to hit FP simply because the premise is good, and it also shifts the focus from the article to the submitter, which very well could be one of the causes of the poweruser phenomenon. Blind digging was a big enough problem before this change.
Now, this trend thing comes along, and places a time limit on people. This makes it so people are even less likely to read through the article than before, because they're afraid the time limit will run out. Of course, we all know there's no penalty for not voting on a digg trend article, but there's a psychological effect when we know there's a time limit. People see the time limit, and out of fear of it, they compulsively hit the 'digg' button.
Then there's the people who hate the digg trends so much, they rebel by burying any and all digg trend items. It's a ridiculous way to react, yes, but that's just how people are.
I suggest letting people opt out of it, like sewalsh said, and making the time limit less prominent/imposing. It's a good basic idea (one of digg's biggest faults is that it takes a lot of time to hit front page) but it needs some tweaking.
EDIT: See, people are already rebelling by burying. Told ya so. - FearlessFreep, on 11/06/2009, -4/+11Same here...don't even care about the article, just burying the 'feature'
- pjpete, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I read the book "The men who stare at goats"; interesting read. The movie looks like it takes the topic a little less serious. Haven't read 'Them' yet, but I would recommend TMWSAG to anyone.
- eocarroll, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3"Them" was a great book. Ronson has a knack for being so unassuming that these conspiracy theorists - some of whom are very dangerous people - just open right up to him. "The Men Who Stare at Goats" is an great read too.
- enantiodromia, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3hmm, not exactly. it's about the people who believe those groups rule the world. the book focuses more on the KKK, Ruby Ridge, and the Alex Jones idiots.
- oneoverzero, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3This new digg trending thing is odd.
Oh, and neato article. - FearlessFreep, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3and Ants?
- doctechnical, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Major Ed Dames? Is that you? When's that killshot arriving?
- zip000, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Ah, I read "Them" by Jon Ronson a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I heard about this book, but never made the connection that it was the same author.
"Them" is basically an investigation into the different groups that are believed to be secretly controlling the world...Free Masons, NWO, etc. - zip000, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Yes you're right. It's been quite a while since I read it, and I didn't remember it quite accurately.
The part that stands out most in my memory is the part about the Bilderberg Group. - WinWinWin, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Just an FYI for anybody who likes these kinds of stories, "Hearts in Atlantis" is an interesting movie that used psychic wars as an underpinning plot that ties a variety of subplots together. Check it out.
- MeaghanOlson, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3The "war on drugs"? This sounds more like "warring with drugs". Giving people drugs w/out their knowledge? So shocked the government contradicts itself yet again.
- SinYakuza, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I too felt the same.
- infinitus64, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Rush Limbaugh?
- sabach, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2I imagine there are very few people who know what you're talking about. Major Head Games.
- SinYakuza, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2go die.
- bullcutter, on 11/06/2009, -3/+4If you believe in psychic powers or abilities, you're retarded.
The end. - swagv, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2Old news wrapped in cheap modern movie marketing.
- gvoakes, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Congratulations you found a Wired article about me
- wondertwins, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2TL/DR: Digg is imba, needs to get nerfed
- Parastie, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Hehehehe...flower power
- DaviDTC, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Careful, you are only allowed to blind digg stuff.
- command76, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Those guys are legendary....
- Rammat2, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1When I first heard the title of this movie, I thought it was dealing with something baaaaaaad. Nice to see it's not dealing with beastiality.
- Amadeus2490, on 11/06/2009, -3/+2I just wanted to let you guys know that I buried this, and was devastated when it told me that it WAS promoted to the main page.
- Rfriaz, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1Can someone explain? I was linked to this story from my Digg gadget on my iGoogle page.
- FlaNative, on 11/06/2009, -1/+0Lot #54?
