- Meresin, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1I'm ashamed to admit this, but I've read a few of Laurel K. Hamilton's books, and none of the people on that list could touch the ancients she described. They were godlike in their power. Television vampires are a buncha prissy fops. They're never impressive...They can't be because they're hampered in concept by what we can create and portray on film. There's almost no way to portray telepathic might on film in a way that doesn't come off looking lame, so they stick to vampires that move fast and hit hard. Weaksauce, imo.
I'll admit, though, that I hate Laurel K. Hamilton's portrayal of what a vampire is, too. They're still too damned pretty and sexy for my taste. Nancy A. Collins' version of the vampire, on the other hand, really strikes home with me. They're dead people with a parasitic demon controlling them, essentially. They're actually dessicated corpses, but they broadcast their old physical appearance telepathically, so that people don't notice. There's nothing sexy or beautiful about them at all, and that seems much more realistic to me. I also like that the host of the demon is really, truly dead - there's nothing of the original person's mind left, so the whole romantic notion of "becoming immortal" doesn't apply. Its everything great about vampires with new added twists and turns to the whole vampire genre that anyone will love. Definitely check it out.... though this book is graphic, its none the less..... AWESOME
