I'm hoping they can find a suitably fat homely kid to play young Keanu.
Maybe some producer's son, or something.

Top five of why the sequels didn't hold up to the original (in no actual particular order within the list):
1. "Look at me I'm Keanu Reeves, but hold one second, I'm not Keanu Reeves anymore, I'm PLAYSTATION MAN! Beware of my pipe swinging skills!"
2. "I MADE THE RAINBOW FOR NEO!!! ^.^"
3. Keanu Reeves naked arse.
4. WTH happened between Animatrix and Reloaded? Who's Link, and what happened with Tank?
5. Morpheus should have freakin' died for Neo. - boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3the answer to number four sadly lies in the game "enter the matrix"
Morpheus eventually dies in The Matrix Online which is official canon storyline. You can see him die here if it pleases you:

Wow......... I didn't think it was even theoretically possible to butcher the Matrix series to such grade. That got to be the most unsatisfying death ever witnessed in human history. That was just.... plain bad. I thank you though for linking it, this has been a life changing event for me.

http://forums.station.sony.com/mxo/posts/list.m?to ... = official storyline cinematics, canon to storyline, written by paul chadwick and wachowskis - santa7, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Ahh if anyone can see me in this cloud of stupidity, but actually if you looked at the story line of the Matrix Online game which the WiBros deveoloped it says they are waiting for the resurection of Neo and how they (machine world) refuse to give up the body of Neo. The story has still been going on for quite some time now and I'm guessing they would just piece it together from the games afterwards. Also this isn't about Hollywood money making (thats just how you get people to produce your movies), the WiBros are just pasting out a story line. I'm not saying Matrix 2-3 went so well but it was just to follow the story. If these things were books maybe it wouldn't have gone so badly but the Matrix fanboys want this for the story, not how cool of a cinema piece it is (that's just a bonus).
- sdphost, on 03/01/2008, -10/+25The story not being over didn't stop Revolutions from being one ***** movie.
- unreg, on 03/01/2008, -9/+15The two sequels shouldn't have happened. Great example of trying to extend the concept of an original and fresh movie and winding up with a putrid trilogy.
- dafragsta, on 03/01/2008, -3/+15It would've been a great trilogy if Neo's development into the ultimate badass was spanned across all three movies. As it was, the trilogy became about Agent Smith, who is a very one dimensional character with not nearly enough revelation to be properly interesting.
- noots, on 03/01/2008, -2/+12agreed. The main thing that made the first Matrix awesome was being introduced to the world through his eyes. Once he became essentially a superhero it became lame (basically the very start of Revolutions)
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1The last two seemed to have been directed by Freemasons obsessed with symbolism, not to mention it added a ***** load of more eastern philosophical themes and other various religious themes that the common westerner would find very foreign.. in fact even when neo was being purged, people in the west were reminded of the cross instead of the obvious lotus.
- Asianwaste, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2I was actually in Japan when the movie came out. My Japanese friends all said when they saw it, "It was a bad episode of Dragon Ball Z"

- tracydanger, on 03/01/2008, -1/+7Totally disagree. It's sad and silly when people don't know that the entire trilogy was planned before the first movie was even made. Watch some DVD extras sometime. Do a little research. If someone thinks Ep. 2 & 3 were dumb or just made up to get more money then the storyline must be way over their head. It all fit together very well. It was a great story and quite deep. The original concept included all three movies.
- bluezinc, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2No, youre very wrong. They would have been awesome had the studios not interfered. The 2nd movie was going to be a prequel about the fall of mankind and the wars between the robots, however, none of the original cast would be in this film so the studio axed it and it became the "animatrix" instead. The studios insisted they just cut the third movie in half and make two more movies. That's why those movies have a *****-ton of lame filler, boredom, awkward extra scenes, and hour long fight scenes.
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3The Animatrix had been planned for since the release of the first movie. The 2nd and 3rd film were always supposed to be one movie, the second movie... The studios wanted that cut into two, because they didn't want to release a 3-4 hour movie about the Matrix.. The 3rd could still come out, but I doubt it since the studios made it difficult, so instead the official canon storyline by the wachowskis along with help from paul chadwick continues til this day:

- Asianwaste, on 03/01/2008, -4/+10After all, how can you top the Machines' great plan that took 50 years to think of: "I know we'll dig a BIG HOLE to Zion!!"
- NiteMayr, on 03/01/2008, -0/+4I think the plan went something like this:
1. Tolerate the humans in Zion.
2. Wait for "the anomoly"
3. When "the anomoly" appears, wait for the humans to accept him.
4. Use the same big drill and over huge numbers of robots we used last time to kill all the humans in Zion. It's cheap and effective and they can't stop us by bomb the tunnels or setting up staged defenses in them.
They are machines and in the end, as creative as they can appear, they are machine bureaucrats. The simplest answers are the best here.- Asianwaste, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Yea, but if the goal is number 4... why steps 1,2, and 3? The machines have had every advantage. They know where Zion is. They have the strength. They have the resources (a nice large people farm to fuel their cells). Why wait for the "one" who basically created the need for Agent Smith, let alone incorrectly removed him from the system which created the Viral Smith.
No, I think it better to just wipe out any community of self aware humans. That way in the slim chance any other human becomes self aware there won't be any outside assistance, and should he escape the human farms, the person will just die in the sewers.- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1http://forums.station.sony.com/mxo/posts/list.m?to ... = canon storyline continued
- sovietninja, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Like the problem with hybrid cars today, in order to power all those machines to invade they had to charge their batteries. Due to the crappy amount of electricity and the fact that most of the batteries were still based on Dell and Sony designs, these batteries were the reason why it took 50 years. Even in the future the oil companies influenced the progression of advanced batteries by relying on oil based technologies. And for all we know all the machines run on Pentium D's which suck those batteries dry like no other.
What batteries you say? Well we have to assume no natural resources exist anymore such as nuclear or fossil or solar. So whatever power was taken from the humans was probably stored into a battery.
U know what the story is crap, all they did was bloat out the sun by making so much electrical interferrence in the sky that the machines couldnt travel out of it, couldn't they just built lightning farms which would then trap that energy into capacitors? Or couldnt they have built something with enough shielding to get through that mess? At least the machines from Terminator reboot after 2 minutes.
God my brain hurts i dont even know what im talking about anymore! I always found the matrix to be a cool looking movie but i just found the story to be so boring due to the over simplications of how the machines operated. And then they tried to make it all complicated by the convoluted rules of the Matrix. Yeah if the machines could be that smart they probably would have tried slinging themselves into space.
- Asianwaste, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Yea, but if the goal is number 4... why steps 1,2, and 3? The machines have had every advantage. They know where Zion is. They have the strength. - NiteMayr, on 03/01/2008, -0/+4I think the plan went something like this:
- stockjones, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2They shouldn't even attempt it. The Wachowski brothers got lucky with the first which was almost perfect. The next 2 were just ok. We arent talking a Spielberg or James Cameron here.
- kesam, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2The Matrix is like the Highlander series, "there should have been only one".
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3Story is still going on for over a year, since the events at the end of part 3.

- victorh86, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2The article makes a fourth film sound very plausible and I would be thrilled to see it. Besides, Reloaded and Revolution is just one big movie anyway. So in a way another sequel would be part 3 in the trilogy.
- LeeSoong, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1The first movie would have been a 1 movie deal - if that stupid kid skipped uploading the
'' combat routines '' into Neo and instead loaded him up with L337 H4CK0RZ programming books, compilers, computer language skills, and a useful 'Matrix Search Engine'.
Why 'Fight' the Agents?
pause their thread, edit their object profiles so they are holding roses, not guns.
Then change their attack code from combat moves to break dance moves.
Hilarity Ensues:
agents go to shoot - but pull out a flower, angered - he goes to punch,
but instead drops to the floor and does some wicked smooth hip hop moves.
Neo upload learning Matrix programming skills would have made a great Monty Python Movie:

- cococooky, on 03/01/2008, -10/+45I agree, they can only improve on the last one.
- LeeSoong, on 03/01/2008, -55/+115The second one was terrible, the third one a dirty mop up of the plot line that started in the first Matrix.
Matrix 4 would have to be in 3D, involve a roller coaster ride, and situated at an Amusement park... and still would lose money.
So, since NEO was a program - where is his back up copy ? N+1 ?- neocognitism, on 03/01/2008, -11/+67No way, if a 4th was made it would still be one of the most successful movies of all time. Europe and the rest of the world went wild for all three, remember. The fact that there is a group of us Americans who didn't like 2 and 3 for some reason doesn't mean jack *****.
- Myonosken, on 03/01/2008, -9/+17No we didn't. We may have all still rushed to see it, but that's largely because we had no idea how bad 2 was on release and were told 3 was an improvement (read: just).
- neocognitism, on 03/01/2008, -3/+4Then why'd we all buy it on DVD? Check the sales figures they were huge. Just sayin'
- waynetheman, on 03/01/2008, -8/+2A group? How about *most*? Sorry, but most Americans like their plots somewhat clean, and won't swallow convoluted, uninteresting tripe with no real closure just because it's artsy.
- neocognitism, on 03/01/2008, -3/+4Not according to the box office and dvd sales figures, they don't. Look it up. Say what you will, but most Americans went for it big time, on DVD the second time around, even. That's just an observation, and doesn't require any critical analysis of the movie. I have actually *said* if I liked it or not yet, because that's not necessary.
- AzureRise, on 03/01/2008, -1/+5Plus Euros are > than USD.

- nreynolds, on 03/01/2008, -6/+54dude, n+1 would definitely get you an array out of bounds error.
on a side note, what? neo wasn't a program, that's why he had those dumb powers in the real world too.- Hedegaard, on 03/01/2008, -6/+72That just begs the question -- was that really the real world or just another layer ? ;)
- SQLDigger, on 03/01/2008, -1/+23That would have been such a better place to go after the end of 2 . . . It might have made 3 almost watchable, and the agony of watching 2 almost worth it.
- grimw, on 03/01/2008, -9/+4Begging the question doesn't make sense; nowhere else in English do you see that kind of ***** with the word "beg". I think you mean "that _raises_ the question".
That said, I think they screwed everything up when he had those powers in the real world and they mentioned nothing of him being in another matrix. That's the only way that could make sense. - kingfoot, on 03/01/2008, -2/+5the answer is 42.
- fokov, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2that concept was already covered in the 13th floor. They just didn't use gimmicks to get teens to watch it high.
- LeeSoong, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1the 3rd movie said he was just another program written to debug the matrix,
Neo acted as an anti-virus program - Capturing a 'sample' of Agent Smith,
allowing the machines to kill it - and in that manner, kill all the agent smiths,
and Reset the Matrix.
Without it - the 'virus' agent smith would have over run the machine matrix level.
If the 'outer world' was not a level - they would have been killed, instead,
Neo just raised his hands to the sentinel squiddies and they dropped dead. - SharkyTech, on 03/01/2008, -0/+5@ LeeSoong - They never said that Neo was a program written to debug the matrix, it's that just 'The One' is an inescapable artifact of the system. Also, at least in my interpretation, it wasn't that Neo "captured a 'sample' of Agent Smith" but simply that by becoming part of Smith, that gave the Machines direct physical access to Smith through one of his hosts (as it would have been impossible to find one of the others infected by searching through the physical infrastructure of the matrix). I could be wrong on both counts, but the fact that our interpretations are so different really highlights for me the level of ambiguity in exactly what happened at the end.
Also, Neo's powers in the real world that no-one bothered to mention until the end of the second movie were just some irrelevant *****. Its true, the only rational explanation is that the real world was another layer, but it's my opinion that they just threw that in simply with the explanation that Neo is 'magic'.
I don't think many people would agree with the multi-layer theory, if only because it is unsatisfying plot wise (akin to "it was all a dream") although it could be used to explain Neo's magic powers as well as the "die in the matrix and you die in the real world" rule (another plot device that really doesn't make all that much sense). The death rule could be explained by saying that it doesn't matter what level of the matrix you die in, the neural shock will bring you out of it entirely (this could actually be not just a happy consequence but an argument in favour of the multi-layer hypothesis depending on your opinion).
Of course, *ahem* it's .. just a movie...- SQLDigger, on 03/01/2008, -0/+4The layered universe is interesting as a programmer, because it is a good explanation of how an AI programmer ("the designer") might solve the problems inherent in the recurrent anomaly of "the One." Of course, once the One is aware of this, assuming he has the magical power of breaking out of the meta-matrix, it does leave us right back where we started, which IMHO would have been a damn sight better for the ending of the 3rd. Or maybe he would just say ***** it and go have a virtual beer, like I'm about to do.
- sovietninja, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2CAN I HAZ VIRTUALZ BEERZ?
- LeeSoong, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Another angle on the story is the Matrix Character Neo becomes self aware that he IS a character in a movie, similar to the Holodeck characters in Star Trek, the next generation suddenly becoming aware that they are not 'real people'.
When the Captain is leaving the Holodeck in one episode, a holodeck character asks him if he will still exist when the captain walks out the archway door. If the computer didn't save the program, in all senses of the word - the holodeck A.I. people die when the program terminates.
So from the point of Neo looking through his eyes and seeing all the green ones and zeros at the end of Matrix one, he realizes he is in a fictional world - only later when the Architect explains he is not the first one - does he realize he is not a real human. Neo understands he is just a character in a movie, and the machine robot layer is just still part of the movie.
Think of how heart broken the 'Die Hard' Bruce Willis cop character would become if the character suddenly had full awareness of being a non-entity, a 2-D projection of photons on a screen?
He's not saving anything, and all the pain, suffering, death, and trouble around him is just for someone else's amusement. Someone he can't even see.
Kind of like when soldiers risking their lives and taking bullets so corporate executives can gain 3 more points per share.
They become very unhappy about being treated like tools.
The war is a live action game, the market place is the real battle ground for profits.
Men die and military contracts worth $40 Billion go to AirBus - so Europeans can profit while American workers get laid off and starve.

never realized they were fighting for the European Union:

on a side note, why did they want to get out of the matrix in the first place? the "real world" was all crappy, barren, dark, and ruled by hostile robots. why not just stay in the matrix?

I get the feeling you didn't actually read the article before posting that ridiculous comment.- SQLDigger, on 03/01/2008, -12/+1Yeah, well previous profitability of a series doesn't guarantee a slam dunk. It wouldn't be the 1st time Hollywood producers made that mistake.
- smthop3, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3....it's the freaking Matrix!
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Somehow only westerners hate the last two, because they weren't familiar with the non-western themes that flooded the last two.
- DesignEx, on 03/01/2008, -1/+5Also, previous Matrices did not budget for roller coaster rides in amusement parks, so maybe his statement really was valid.
- unreg, on 03/01/2008, -4/+7But how many people regret having handed over the money to see #2 and 3?
- SQLDigger, on 03/01/2008, -1/+4Luckily, I waited until Revolutions came out on video. But yeah, 2 kind of made me wish I'd fed 10 starving kids for a day instead . . .
- jftitan, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2Aye, Eye, I.... I regret!
- bigt8dogg, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Thank god for Bit Torrent :D
- SQLDigger, on 03/01/2008, -1/+4Luckily, I waited until Revolutions came out on video. But yeah, 2 kind of made me wish I'd fed 10 starving kids for a day instead . . .
- notoneofus, on 03/01/2008, -7/+3Those numbers are spurious, and not indicative of actual profit. I'd guess $363M is actual budget, not counting distribution and advertising (which is often as much, worldwide). And $1.6 billion in box office does not equal direct income for the studio. The studio likely gets about $1 billion of the sales, minus budget and marketing. They probably made about $200M-300M. Still good money, but not $1.2 billion.
- smthop3, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2"Those numbers are spurious."

- incognit0, on 03/01/2008, -4/+8So, I'm not going to try to argue for the third movie, it was such a let down. But I don't know how you can think the second was so bad.
- oilcan, on 03/01/2008, -3/+3thank you! about time I found somebody who agrees. I don't get it. I don't know why people don't like the second one. IMHO it was as good if not superior to the first.
Third one had its moments (battle for zion etc) but yeah was kind of a let down after the first two. everybody no matter how minor gets at least a minute monologue before dying :P - SQLDigger, on 03/01/2008, -0/+4It would have benefitted greatly from some editing. E.g., that subterranean techno-rave-love-orgy I really could have done without. They only had enough material for 1 movie, and they made 2. If they had combined 2 & 3, cut out the padding, then written a kick-ass 3 where you find out they're in another Matrix, then I might have more respect for the Wachowski brothers.
- r00tus3r, on 03/01/2008, -2/+2I agree, the second one was great, and the third was rubbish. First was amazing because of the novelty of the whole concept.
- brettmurf, on 03/01/2008, -2/+2Wrong.
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Because he didn't get what the whole program thing was or why the guy was named Merovingian and married to someone named Persephone, for some people that don't get the hints or clues, it was a major homework assignment.
- oilcan, on 03/01/2008, -3/+3thank you! about time I found somebody who agrees. I don't get it. I don't know why people don't like the second one. IMHO it was as good if not superior to the first.

- neocognitism, on 03/01/2008, -11/+67No way, if a 4th was made it would still be one of the most successful movies of all time. Europe and the rest of the world went wild for all three, remember. The fact that there is a group of us Americans who didn't like 2 and 3 for some reason doesn't mean jack *****.
- chris8535, on 03/01/2008, -53/+280no
- Erowid, on 03/01/2008, -3/+8Thanks, now I don't have to read the article :)
- fancyj, on 03/01/2008, -5/+2beat me to it.
- culbeda, on 03/01/2008, -2/+1You for the "hell " at the beginning and the "!" at the end. Other than that, I'd say you're dead on.
- iraq, on 03/01/2008, -17/+55Yeah after the first one, it was a HUGE drop off. They got too ambitious with the plot, maybe a little too creative. It was so 'out there' that it sunk the entire series so much, it didn't even leave you with the "hey, at least the special effects were great" feeling -- because who the F cares when the movie is that bad?
- iraq, on 03/01/2008, -2/+31Also, don't want to sound like a complete hater.. I absolutely loved the original. At the time of its release, it was one of the few movies that could really rock my surround sound system and it was great entertainment. I still catch the reruns on TV whenever they air, the original was a good, fun and refreshing concept. G'luck w/ #4.. I'd probably pay to watch it but wouldn't hold my breath hoping for a resurrection of the Matrix series.
- artemus, on 03/01/2008, -2/+12I agree. Two was disheartening to watch(although I did like the Merovingian character. (Also, what was the deal with that sex scene? The way they cut back and forth from the dancing and the uh... mating... was like watching something from a Jackson 5 video.. It was, quite possibly, the most disturbing and pointless scene in the history of cinema.
The third was a total letdown. Weak plot, weak dialogue, disappointing ending. All in all, the Matrix was a good concept, but it could have been so much more.

- NGliam, on 03/01/2008, -10/+22I don't understands why nobody likes #2 and #3, I think they were all brilliant.. I don't usually enjoy sci-fi at all either.
- unreg, on 03/01/2008, -13/+8Brilliant in a retarded nonsensical manner.
- notoneofus, on 03/01/2008, -13/+8I do enjoy sci-fi, and that's the primary reason I hated 2 and 3. Bad science fiction at its worst.
- offspring06, on 03/01/2008, -13/+9Some people didn't like it because they are too dumb to understand it. I like them myself and watched them more than once.
- oilcan, on 03/01/2008, -5/+9had my problems with 3, but 2 was, for the most part, a masterpiece and a marvelous development to the matrix mythos. delving deeper into the details of the matrix, far superior choreography...i honestly don't get people's problems with it. maybe it *is* because it was over their heads /shrug
- spudnic, on 03/01/2008, -3/+5Or maybe they understood them perfectly and still thought they were *****.
- fridenstrom, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1And crappy CG.
- ubergeek09, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1I like it since it's so 'out there' :).
- joclark, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Agreed. #2 and #3 don't even come close to #1. #1 was brilliant. #2 and #3 blew. I don't even remember them really.

- dotlizard, on 03/01/2008, -7/+13any sequel to a huge movie has the potential to be a really bad idea, and the probability that it is a bad idea increases as the numbers get bigger. well, on the bright side, considering the decline that 2 and 3 exhibited, this could be truly epic -- who knows, maybe the worst movie ever?
or they could have some actual original thoughts in hollywood and it could rock, i mean, anything can happen right?- unreg, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Rocky Balboa and Rambo managed to salvage their respective series. Letahl Weapon 4 and Alien Resurrection left a putrid skid mark for theire lineage. Bond and Star Trek have see-sawed back and forth.
- brskeen, on 03/01/2008, -0/+4It could simply be that people's expectations were so high after The Matrix, that ANY sequel would have been disappointing.
- adrenaline33, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Well, if all three films had been great and wrapped the story then that would be one thing. The fact of the matter is, fans hated the 2nd and 3rd so much that they just look at the first movie as a stand-alone film. Basically what im saying is that a fourth may not be successful, but it doesn't take the risk of ruining a brilliant trilogy since the last two already did that. And it will make a ton of money. And if you were them, wouldn't you want a chance to redeem yourself?
- coresnake, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1See: Superman IV
- mayan, on 03/01/2008, -45/+221What? A 4th matrix? I like to pretend that the second and third movies never existed.
- mnugent, on 03/01/2008, -10/+7agreed!
- my10cent, on 03/01/2008, -13/+1oh stop it, the second and third movie was much better than the first not to mention more popular.
- timusca, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2More popular? How many people do you know saw the 2nd one before seeing the 1st, not to mention understood the polt so well as to see the 3rd one without seeing the 1st?
- TheSeptimHeir, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2You must be thinking of "The Land Before Time" series.
- shotgunefx, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Me too, stashed them right next to Highlander 2
- Clodhopper, on 03/01/2008, -2/+0I think they are doing that with The Fast And The Furious (the new "sequel" coming out) that takes place right where the first one left off.
- OnlyShawn, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1...there is no spoon, there is no sp---second matrix, there is no second matrix...
- pmctosh, on 03/01/2008, -13/+131Personally, I'd love to see what they could do with a fourth installment.
- 6minuteabs, on 03/01/2008, -12/+2They could start by burning it.
- exscind, on 03/01/2008, -2/+11At first I dismissed it as a poor idea, but that article makes an incredibly convincing case. Actually, I want to watch the whole trilogy again with the theory in mind that Seraph and the Merovingian were predecessors.
- Exekutor, on 03/01/2008, -2/+2They already screwed the idea so there's nothing to loose as a spectator.
- Jpotts12, on 03/01/2008, -2/+2Is Colonel Sanders going to be in this one too? He's the architect of the world's best fried chicken.
- neoknight, on 03/01/2008, -20/+29There should've been Only One! Not two or three!
- Myonosken, on 03/01/2008, -6/+4There SHOULD have been 3 amazing films, ie: cut the ***** over the top dialogue, lose some of the fist fighting scenes and add some mother ***** shoot outs!
- waynetheman, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1Wouldn't have helped. It was the plot development and placement of action that killed them.
- CaseyB, on 03/01/2008, -0/+0This is an apt reference: they should have stopped the Highlander series after the first movie, too. That went downhill even faster than the Matrix movies.
- Myonosken, on 03/01/2008, -6/+4There SHOULD have been 3 amazing films, ie: cut the ***** over the top dialogue, lose some of the fist fighting scenes and add some mother ***** shoot outs!

- Ceeman, on 03/01/2008, -12/+11I could edit down the second one and make it a good movie. The 3rd was god awful. No reason to make a 4th.
- FluffyWolf, on 03/01/2008, -9/+6Sure, if they in some way makes clear in the beginning of the film that film 2 and 3 was made by dark evil forces as propaganda trying to fool us into believing that there is no matrix, or that they were just bad dreams or whatever.
- fant0m, on 03/01/2008, -13/+7I think that the original Matrix was so groundbreaking (because movies never had the effects that The Matrix had) that it is hard to top - even with sequels.
I honestly think the only thing that may live up to par would be a Max Payne movie with great bullet-time footage incorporated. - gypsi, on 03/01/2008, -3/+6let's not lose our ***** minds about how great the first one was. i guess with a 4th, they can put out a 20disc set when all is said and done.
- jgrommersch, on 03/01/2008, -16/+62They should just make "The Matrix 2" non-lame Edition.
- cocoabear, on 03/01/2008, -1/+15And it should star Christian Bale. That guy can resurrect any franchise.
- djepik, on 03/01/2008, -14/+7I threw up after #3, so no I don't want to experience the consequences of a fourth.

And by the way, the story about the sex-change operation is unfounded. (although he is a transvestite, and has changed his name to Laurencia, but that's another story entirely)...
- Myonosken, on 03/01/2008, -0/+13"Shortly after the release of Matrix Reloaded, it was rumored that Larry Wachowski began to make small public appearances dressed as a woman, using the name Lana Wachowski.[4] In his column, published May 30, 2003, David Poland said "Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex. Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation." This was further supported by a March 2006 San Francisco Chronicle article on transgender people, which reported that Larry Wachowski, "has changed his sex and is now living as Lana Wachowski". [5]
However, in a 2007 interview Joel Silver, the producer of numerous Wachowski films, stated that the rumors concerning Larry's sex change were "all untrue," further explaining, "they just don’t do interviews, so people make things up." - solidus636, on 03/01/2008, -5/+8No!
- Spamcan, on 03/01/2008, -6/+53The first Matrix was a great movie, but they went completely in the wrong direction after that. Many franchises have branched off and created different storylines in various mediums starting from a single successful point (Terminator, Aliens) so I see no reason why another Matrix movie shouldn't be made as long as it jumps off from the first movie and completely ignores the other two. The comics and the Animatrix showed that there is enough substance to the Matrix universe to make it happen and do it properly.
- mithrasinvictus, on 03/01/2008, -3/+3They never went outside the matrix and agent smith infected them with a stupidity virus in order to make them swallow that unbelievable hoax?
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Too much AQAL theory and Ken Wilber philsophy meshed with eastern philosophical themes that went way over gaijin's heads
- SausageSmith, on 03/01/2008, -8/+11There shouldn't have been a second nor third let alone a fourth.
- Androfire, on 03/01/2008, -3/+5I wouldn't mind, if there is any story left. What will the new conflict be? Isn't everything resolved by the end of the third? Don't get me wrong, I'm a Matrix fan but I don't want to see a horrible continuation.
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1There is a fourth movie, the storyline is continued in The Matrix Online.. Currenlty right now, Morpheus is back after having faked his death, and some program that looks like polygons is trying to find out about how Neo saved Trinity, or specifically how he brought her back to life.
- Lephtovermeet, on 03/01/2008, -25/+23Matrix 1 - pretty graphics + plot holes
Matrix 2 - awesome action + more plot holes
Matrix 3 - plot holes + plot holes
Animatrix - preceding plot holes
Matrix 4 - Canadian bacon + plot holes (I assume)- Pilot85, on 03/01/2008, -2/+6Like, why did they even bother using humans as batteries? Why the hell didn't they just use the "form of fusion" they talked about? That woulda been a lot simpler.
- mithrasinvictus, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2using humans for processing capacity or something like that would have been more believable.
- insllvn, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2Perhaps the machines were reluctant to exterminate a species. Perhaps the humans are not as noble as we think, and the machines not so malevolent.
- spudnic, on 03/01/2008, -0/+4That's exactly the kind of plot idea they should have developed.
- Xondar, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Or maybe the machines are petty and vengeful. They use the "battery" excuse to keep humanity enslaved much like how they were once enslaved by humanity.
- insllvn, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2Perhaps the machines were reluctant to exterminate a species. Perhaps the humans are not as noble as we think, and the machines not so malevolent.
- Radan, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1I think they somewhat explained the battery thing in Animatrix, at least they explained how the machines took the power. If they made the fourth movie about before the war with the machines and the fall of men, in the spirit of how they did it in Animatrix (maybe a bit more Matrix 1:ish), I would be happy.
- mithrasinvictus, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2using humans for processing capacity or something like that would have been more believable.
- Nuhaus, on 03/01/2008, -8/+5Animatrix is probably the best thing to ever come out of the whole matrix series. Highly recommended.
- Crosshare, on 03/01/2008, -3/+2Not better than the original, but it is awesome.
- EricPeters, on 03/01/2008, -3/+4No, because if it had Canadian bacon it would actually be good. And we know this is impossible.
- kahrytan, on 03/01/2008, -2/+6the plot holes actually makes the Matrix a good movie. It leaves questions for you to try to answer or understand.
- podperson, on 03/01/2008, -3/+1Like "how do we justify killing all these people"? And "aren't human beings a ridiculously inefficient source of power"? And "if you're going to base your movie on really bad philosophy, why not at least keep it brief?"
- nycmac247, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7What plot holes? Maybe I was too Meta and actually thought it made sense?
- TheSeptimHeir, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2Everyone knows the capital of Canada is Toronto.
- Pilot85, on 03/01/2008, -2/+6Like, why did they even bother using humans as batteries? Why the hell didn't they just use the "form of fusion" they talked about? That woulda been a lot simpler.
- macweirdo42, on 03/01/2008, -9/+221No. I am sick of that blatantly pro-human propaganda. It's offensive and bigoted, and anti-machine. I won't stand for it anymore. I mean, let's look at the evidence. The machines are persecuted and vilified, and for what? The humans started the war; the machines only wanted peacefully coexist. When the humans tried to exterminate them, they started their own country away from the humans, to live in peace. When they tried to join the UN, the humans bombed the ever-loving ***** out of them. The machines attacked, but only out of self-preservation. It was the humans who then darkened the skies, turning the planet into a cold, dark, barren wasteland, simply to ensure that if they didn't win, at least the machines wouldn't, either. And what did the machines do, having their power source cut off and knowing that humanity was going to die out? They actually tried to save the humans. Oh sure, they say that they used the humans as batteries, but we all know that defies the laws of physics. They're just being modest. And they made an entire virtual-reality world, to try to make the humans happy. In fact, they even tried to make a perfect world, but only gave up because it was disastrous. And then what happens? A few humans break out of this great virtual reality universe, created solely to please the humans, and the humans that escape go right back to declaring war on the machines.
The machines have shown infinite patience, and even compassion and mercy, on these humans who have done nothing but persecute, torture, and try to exterminate the machines. Oh sure, one or two of them, like Agent Smith, has proven to be something of a dick, but let's face it, that's prejudiced to judge the entire race based on only him.- Deodrus, on 03/01/2008, -34/+2okay. It's a movie. Deal with it.

- Rocketbird, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7For the first half of your comment I thought you were writing about Battlestar Galactica.
- WriterSD, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2LOL, ditto!
- airburst, on 03/01/2008, -0/+23Damn robot apologists! You'll be the ruin of humanity!
- scamper22, on 03/01/2008, -1/+11By George, I think you just wrote the plot of Matrix 4!
Matrik 4 - the machine perspective. i like it.
Then yes, we can find out that the only reason the robots use humans in batteries is because they thought it was more humane.
They don't want to be the 'virus' as humans are.
I like it.- deadseksy, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Hmm, perhaps a Matrix prequel would be cool?
- Radan, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Actually, that is one of the plotlines in Animatrix. Great movie btw.
- UNCCEJ1010, on 03/01/2008, -0/+20And that is the true lesson of the second renaissance: value intelligence in all forms.
- mithrasinvictus, on 03/01/2008, -1/+7it's OK. They never went outside, the machines just gave them a reality their paranoid minds could accept. (don't tell them)
- SharkyTech, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1More like 'outside' was just another layer of the high-tech equivalent of WoW, giving bored people the illusion they have a battle to fight.
- podperson, on 03/01/2008, -1/+6Brilliant. You might also note that the humans (who don't like the virtual world) are perfectly happy to slaughter the humans who do, which doesn't say much for them.

- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1In the Matrix online, you can align yourself with Zionites, Neo worshippers, Cypherites, Machinists, and humans who support Exiles.
All those issues you brought up are somewhat addressed in the game. Reloaded and Revolutions were just a set up to set the tone for the politics in The Matrix Online aka The Matrix 4 since the storyline is continued.. Humans can be freed, but there are also humans who support a symbiotic relationship with the machines...
- Deodrus, on 03/01/2008, -34/+2okay. It's a movie. Deal with it.
- searcade, on 03/01/2008, -3/+4They would probably make matrix series,
like they did with blade, terminator etc there are so many out there now- kahrytan, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2A series would in no doubt be canceled. It would cost far to much to do.
- Jethdm, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1An animated Matrix series can probably work. It would be great if it were animated in a non-gay anime style but directed in America.
- boombye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1The story is continued @ The Matrix Online
story is being handled by the guy who made the comic concrete, Paul Chadwick. and the Wachowskis.
- doshindude, on 03/01/2008, -9/+16they should just call it "The Matrix 2" and completely disregard the crappy sequels.
"There was no Reloaded or Revolutions."- ausfahrt, on 03/01/2008, -4/+2Nicely put i was just going to say "No! the others sucked". That hits the nail much harder on the head.
- HydrogenY, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Though they did try that with Highlander and it still didn't work out.
I liked how Alien 4 erased Alien 3 from history. Maybe they should get Joss Whedon in. - coresnake, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Yeh just look at Superman Returns, they said ***** you to Superman 3 and 4 and it was a success!
- insllvn, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2...but that sucked. Well, aside form Kevin Spacey, it sucked.

- Langford, on 03/01/2008, -1/+9So Matrix 2 and 3 didn't pan out as well as they could have. Maybe 4 could be better? I'm sure the theaters will be packed with even worse movies than it, so they may as well bring it on.
- bxblox, on 03/01/2008, -1/+8Not with a name like "Resurrection," one of the most overused sequel subtitles ever. Its tackiness right up there with reloaded and revolutions, they must be going for a record.
- gypsi, on 03/01/2008, -1/+8how about "electric boogaloo"
- LBobRife, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3All the comments up to this point have been crying about 2 and 3. I am glad I kept reading because you're comment actually made me laugh out loud. (none of this "lol" *****)
- gypsi, on 03/01/2008, -1/+8how about "electric boogaloo"
- SquigglyP, on 03/01/2008, -1/+3I dunno, I think if given the right creative people working on it - and if they keep as much of the previous cast out of it as possible (side role or background characters) I think this could work well. The Matrix comics and the anime versions were all interesting, and the Wachowski's didn't really have all that much input into the comics. Most of the comics avoided the main characters like the plague. So yeah, I think it would work pretty well with those sort of ideas.
But just bringing back Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, Smith or having "evil Neo" or something... that would be retarded. - sdphost, on 03/01/2008, -6/+16It can't possibly be worse than Revolutions.
- chrgrose, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2Reloaded is sucked way more balls. Revolutions was ok the first time in theaters, but I would probably never watch it again on any medium.
- superbeefy, on 03/01/2008, -4/+2Long live our robot overloads
- WaltDismal, on 03/01/2008, -5/+3I have nothing to say except: "head splode". Owwie.
- 33PercentGod, on 03/01/2008, -13/+28I don't understand the dislike for the second movie. I thought it was better than the first in terms of the cool ass stuff they did. Didnt the 2nd movie have BOTH the huge Agent Smith fight AND the ghosts/highway big rig scene?
- offspring06, on 03/01/2008, -3/+15Either people got themselves too hyped up or they couldn't understand the movies. I loved the sequels myself. The first Matrix was awesome because we didn't know what to expect from it.
- Dweed, on 03/01/2008, -4/+0My problem with the second movie was that it was boring at times, unlike the first film.
- cornflakepirate, on 03/01/2008, -3/+4No, the first Matrix was awesome because
* the fights were fun
* the plot mostly made sense
* the talky bits weren't too boring
The highway scene is the only good part of the sequels.
- cryonix, on 03/01/2008, -5/+1my ideas of the movie were a disappointment. i saw months before the trailer a picture of a car split in half... then a few weeks later a shot of Morpheus on a freeway with a sword. all i could thing was "OH *****! Morpheus fights ***** CARS!". sounds dumb i know but seriously think about it. Agents can take host of anyone. take a guy in a car try to make it smash in to the stranded Morph. agent/guy dies jumps into another guy further up the road to start the process over. all morph can do is dodge the cars while slicing through the bodies of the car to kill the agent all in super slow motion. ***** sweet... never happened. but its my fault for expecting something cool from a matrix movie...
- Archer007, on 03/01/2008, -6/+5But it sucked. Not even the best special effects in the industry can save a movie that sucks.
- Scheissen, on 03/01/2008, -2/+8You mean the huge battle where it looked like Neo was a video game character through out the scene?
- insllvn, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3[rant]
The problem with the sequels is that they tried to be to much. The first one works because it is relatable. At its core, The Matrix is about the alienation of modern society and that sneaking suspicion you sometimes get that it is all an elaborate ruse, that your whole reality is unreal, and that you are just a cog in the machine (or is that just me). The sequels were good movies, they just weren't groundbreaking. I like them a great deal, the kung-fu in 2 is especially well done and beautiful. i would love to see a fourth movie, partly because the story doesn't feel complete, and partly because I am a series junkie. I want to know more about the Merovingian, and I agree that Neo isn't really dead. The sequels will never equal the original, but they may still have a fun and interesting story to tell. Think of The Godfather. The sequels are still excellent movies (individual opinions on Godfather 3 not withstanding), but neither equal the original, and that is OK.
[/rant]- pbeternal99, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Godfather 2 is widely considered to be better than 1.
- 0gre, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2People didn't like the second movie because it was awful. Starting from the first 2 minutes of the movie where suddenly Neo sucks "Whoa Upgrades!" But Trinity and Morpheus can suddenly hold their own against agents? WTF? In the end of the first movie Neo was superman in the beginning of 2 he was marginally better than trinity. Add in super cliché war scenes, weird techno funky soft core pr0n for no reason and a rambling story line that goes nowhere and you get a steaming pile of dung.
- insllvn, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2Well, Neo doesn't quite suck. He fights 1 of the "upgrades" to a standstill with one hand, then he kicks all their asses with both. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ivvKWdFkSY Next he beats up several dozen Agent Smiths. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSKlbL-yQ0 I agree with you about Morpheus and Trinities sudden new found awesomeness. The agents were, from from the perspective of normal humans, unstoppable, like Terminators crossed with Pi Mai. I think that with Neo concessions were made to the idea that watching him kick ass totally unchallenged for 2 hours would have been less cool than we think, although I admit I am not sure I agree. The most contentious point, the philosophy babble, was simply over applied. The scene in the clip above were smith lectures Neo on purpose still sends shivers down my spine. He is bordering on psychotic, clearly unhinged, but still that calm measured monotone of evil. Smith is doom, a seething chaos below, hidden by sheer coldbloodedness (is that a word? firefox says no). The scene were Neo discusses the nature of control with the Councilman Hamann went no where and was garbage. On the first watch-through, it felt like clever foreshadowing, but nothing came of it. On subsequent viewings, it slaps me in the face as unnecessary exposition for something we should have been able to infer for ourselves. The philosophy babble is not the problem per se, it is how an how much it is used.
- offspring06, on 03/01/2008, -3/+15Either people got themselves too hyped up or they couldn't understand the movies. I loved the sequels myself. The first Matrix was awesome because we didn't know what to expect from it.
- Synthesize, on 03/01/2008, -7/+3The second and third already sucked so why would we need another one that would most likely suck?
- Daiken, on 03/01/2008, -7/+1I was so disappointed and confused with Matrix Revolutions, that I wish the movie never existed. But it does, and the only way to rectify the situation is to release a follow up, one that's actually good. I hope they do it.
- grungegbunny, on 03/01/2008, -2/+19How about a prequel with a whole new cast.
- smashv2, on 03/01/2008, -1/+3Or just re-use footage of Keanu Reeves from Bill & Ted for young Neo.
- PFrocker, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2well you know in the animatrix the story of the war? Well i really want to see a full length movie out of that.
- Fergy, on 03/02/2008, -0/+1Yes please
- NatimusRex, on 03/01/2008, -1/+11Didn't the story kind of continue in The Matrix Online anyway?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Matrix_Online- cryonix, on 03/01/2008, -1/+6yes it does. and the article mentions that as a potential story arc.... read the whole thing.
- NatimusRex, on 03/01/2008, -0/+2It's a brief comment at best. MxO had a lot of expansive chapters (including Morpheus dying).
What I'm curious about is the continuation they would want to do and whether or not to make that stuff canon. Cool out.- ThornHarvestar, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3We (MxO players) were somewhat told that the story in the game *would* be canon (although some early events had different outcomes depending on the server). It's one of the best parts of the game, for me. :]

- fahrenheitlf, on 03/01/2008, -0/+6August 15th - Star Wars: The Clone Wars
It's anime, but it's still a theater release of a new Star Wars movie.- asamorris, on 03/01/2008, -0/+0haha ftw

- InfinitySnatch, on 03/01/2008, -17/+8Yes. Starring Christian Bale. Oh wait, it was called Equilibrium and was a better film anyway, my bad.
- richporter, on 03/01/2008, -3/+5Equilibrium was crap.
- InfinitySnatch, on 03/01/2008, -1/+2You're crap.
- waynetheman, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1The gun fights were good, some better than others. The one at the end was brilliant, and alone almost made the movie worth it.
- richporter, on 03/01/2008, -3/+5Equilibrium was crap.
- grat2001, on 03/01/2008, -1/+25I don't know about a "4th", but a pre-matrix movie would fit the bill. As stated in the movie, Neo was not the 1st. Many people say just watch iRobot then Terminator and you have the beginning. I don't buy that, I would like to see a real prequel.
- 0ddity, on 03/01/2008, -0/+15Animatrix wasn't good enough for you?

- centran, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10If they take as much care as they did with the first one then yes.
A fourth installment doesn't have to be right after 3... There is a lot of other people's story and also back stories they could cover.- mishaco, on 03/01/2008, -0/+6like the animatrix . but bigger and better .
i vote that you get writing that script . i promise to buy a ticket . - Butterfly9, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0the yin yang can stand for a lot of things. it could be a battle of 2 fronts one real and one virtual(your trolls:P). it can stand for good virus vs bads ones. it stand for neo-humans(cyclons) that have the body's of robots and the heart of humans.the battle can even go in to outer space of course neo-humans would do the best. well the mean of been human is fixable the way i would see is stick to cos till the some one choses to take the next step to be a neo-human. some people wont even like virtual and stick to the real world and fight there. anywho i myself would stick to both. if it was made i would like it to be a story and not a damm show put some real meaning in it. a story like this is limitless have funn...
- mishaco, on 03/01/2008, -0/+6like the animatrix . but bigger and better .
- Kohaxx, on 03/01/2008, -1/+0As much as I hate to say it, they would have to do a prequel.
A movie showing the first generation of people who realized they were in a matrix would quite possibly do the series justice.
Doing a movie set after the third would make no sense. So what? They negotiated a truce with the machines and people can choose to live in the matrix if they want, but still people are fighting agents? I doubt it would work. -
