- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36It pays to read the article. I found this URL for a site that lists MANY movies that have been allowed to fall into the public domain and that can be torrented/dowloaded, legally, for free:
http://www.publicdomaintorrents.com/ - Testify.Alex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The remake with will smith is going to SUCK
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I saw both as a child. Omega Man was much better by far. Having seen Will Smith's movies I think Omega Man will stay at the top of the three.
- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Later remade into an awesome 1971 Charlton Heston vampire movie called "The Omega Man". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/
To be remade again in 2007 with Will Smith, under the original title, "I Am Legend". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/ - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8(Sockpuppets are replying to this spam to make people keep checking it)
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"lol, im black"
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'll download movies whether it's legal or not.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.archive.org/details/the-last-man-on-earth
and other there - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I recommend The Quiet Earth ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/ ). Its one of the best films in this genre.
- hppyfngy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this would be nice and everything, except the movie is really really bad...
- MadNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Everything else: free and illegal on Bittorrent...
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wish i could dig you up more, this is an excellent link!
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree, this movie really is an underappreciated gem. And the ending is just unbelievably beautiful.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the Quiet Earth mention. Almost forgotten about that movie. Checked a couple of years back and it wasn't on DVD. Looks like as of June, 2006 you can purchase it on Amazon and others.
- 32bitwonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Roger: Thank you for mentioning The Quiet Earth which is an all time favourite of mine. Of course if you are recommending this film, you'll recognize what a niche genre this is. I've tried many times to get others interested in The Quiet Earth but quite frankly, very very few of them actually 'get it '. It's those experiences which makes your recommendation all the more welcome!
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's too bad you can't read the Protosevich first draft that was circulating for years before being picked up this year.
- LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those sort of things are really the fault of the scriptwriter more than the actor. Not that there aren't plenty of other things to critique Will Smith on.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget "Night of the Comet" (1984), which has the same premise. In which Haley's Comet returns to earth, and wipes out all but a few people who happened to be in doors
and a movie theater sleeping. They awake and find most of the people have been turned to dust, and those who haven't'...zombies.
"Maximum Over Drive" (1986), a handful of survivors after a commet (..ahem..weather satellite) passes by the earth turning everything mechanical into killing machines (based on Stephen King's "Trucks") - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Archive.org has this as well...

FTP and HTTP mirrors! - theehman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Can't Will Smith leave anything alone?? Doesn't he have a single freakin' shred of dignity?? Must we have his jive, wise-crackin' ass all over the place??
- DMCau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HTTP mirror: http://www.filecloud.com/file/4096/The+Last+Man+on+Earth+Feature+Film/
- Spacejack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does this link have the right aspect ratio? That's what's kept me away from the cheapo DVDs of this movie
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's 9:16 so it's reversed of what you're wanting.
- vranghel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there a website where i could check which movies have fallen out of copyright?
Or is there a set amount of time after which the copyright expires? - Paisleyfrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When possible, I prefer publicdomaintorrents over archive.org, as the 700 meg divx files they offer are quite fine quality, and are a lot more reasonable to get than the 2-3 gig high quality files available on archive.org.
I've never gotten great speeds from either source, so I've found size to matter. - badken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When Works Fall Into the Public Domain

If you care about respecting the original copyright holder's rights, best to find out if any pre-1964 films offered for download have had their copyright renewed. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I know. I can picture all the racial jokes he'll make.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I watched it last night. It wasn't too bad.
- Sacrifice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Roger
I second "The Quiet Earth" recommendation. It is a great film, albeit hard to find. I downloaded it from newsgroups several years ago. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Completely unrelated, but http://www.pmillett.com/technical_books_online.htm has a bunch of out of copyright books on electronics.
http://www.scils.rutgers.edu/~lesk/copyrenew.html lets you search for out of copyright books. - garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the book was written in 1954, so it would be in the public domain for some countries but not others. In the USA, it's not. In the USA everything is in the public domain before 1923 and everything 90 years after the original publishing unless the copyright was before 1936 (I think it was) then if it was renewed it would be 90 and if not only 75.
The movie is definitely not in the Public Domain just yet in most of the civilized world. - RTCA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not up to the downloader, really, to determine the copyright status of the movies provided. At some point, we have to trust the provider of the material has done the proper research.
- jlpoole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1!DANGER WILL ROBINSON!
http://www.publicdomaintorrents.com/index.html --
On what basis do they arrive at the legal conclusion that a particular work they offer has fallen into the public domain or that the copyright is not enforceable? I am unable to find anything better than their statement "ALL MOVIES LISTED HERE ARE BELIEVED TO BE IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN!"
Is there something more on the site which provides a greater degree of certainty of such a legal conclusion? - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@swizzley:
The books on that website are all pre 1964. That must be the cutoff date. - swizzley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is far too new for the copyright to expire... so how did it "fall into the public domain"?
- theehman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The Last Man on Earth" is definitely a better adaptation of "I Am Legend". Plus, Vincent Price RULEZ!!!
- doomgoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FInally! You have made my life.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4*sigh* I wish every movie was legal for BT download
- Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So, cause it's crap, its free?
- LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Or is there a set amount of time after which the copyright expires?"
Not anymore. - timjbart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Have the film industry finally discovered bit torrent? Think of the money they've missed out on if they had embraced the technology. I'm enjoying this spate of downloadable films
- Bravocowboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I Am Legend" was just filming in Manhattan a couple of weeks ago outside my apartment on 46th street. Smith's trailer was a two story semi truck.
- KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@ tinker123
You have obviously not read "I Am Legend" if you think Omega Man is any better The Last Man on Earth. Actually, it doesn't matter either way, Omega Man was horrible. - thestorey, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5(17:53:11) Me: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1663597729999672400
