- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -4/+44When did YouTube get a non-***** HD player??
I can't wait for The Hobbit.
Edit: Wow, this is really good so far. - DouglasQ, on 07/03/2009, -7/+44Isn't that precious.
EDIT: Yeah I'm really not proud of myself... I'm not gonna delete this though so that it gets buried.
It's the only way I'll learn... - 22catches, on 07/03/2009, -1/+36I have dug you up so that you may stand as a cautionary example to others. Kinda like the modern equivalent of sticking someone's head on a spike outside a city's gates.
- CapeKid, on 07/03/2009, -0/+32The costumes are amazing for such a small budget. Especially the orcs, looks damn close to the real thing.
- CapeKid, on 07/03/2009, -0/+22Yet...
- SlowFreshOil, on 07/03/2009, -0/+20Pretty good for a $5000 budget. It's amazing what anyone can do these days that Hollywood was doing 10 years ago.
- DulcetTone, on 07/03/2009, -0/+19Worthy article topic: an accounting breakdown of the $5000. Odds are that the $5000 rests atop $30K in hardware and software costs that could be brought to bear.
- walterwoodsiv, on 07/03/2009, -2/+19Now just imagine Guillermo Del Toro directing it.
- robbiedo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+15No labor costs, donated stuff, and cheap technology. Oh yeah, and paid no rights to use characters, or story
- reccaoconnor, on 07/03/2009, -5/+20Was this not dug when I watched it like 2 months ago? Anyways, I guess it's worth digging up for those who missed it the first time around, as it is quite mind blowing what these guys did for $5K.
- Vindexus, on 07/03/2009, -0/+13Wikipedia:
It is unclear whether the production violates the rights held by the Tolkien Estate and New Line films.[4] Fred von Lohmann, director of the Electronic Freedom Foundation, told NPR that the high quality of the film and its global reach via the internet could potentially create legal issues. However, director Chris Bouchard told BBC News:
We got in touch with Tolkien Enterprises and reached an understanding with them that as long as we are completely non-profit then we're okay. We have to be careful not to disrespect their ownership of the intellectual property. They are supportive of the way fans wish to express their enthusiasm - phenger, on 07/03/2009, -0/+11Touche sir.
- Conway, on 07/03/2009, -0/+11I like that new feature on youtube. Click the light-bulb for turn down the lights.
- plinstrot, on 07/03/2009, -0/+10There's also another Lord of the Rings fan film coming up from some of the same people that made this one. Its got a much larger cast, a bigger budget, and will be a lot longer. If all goes well it will come out this Fall.

- FallingDonkey, on 07/03/2009, -4/+13Found him. He was at the bottom of the lava in Mordor. What do I win?
- Llanowar, on 07/03/2009, -0/+8Still a lot.
The reason the animations aren't horribly expensive is because they are done for free.
If they were to do it for a big budget movie they would get well paid. - lr4life, on 07/03/2009, -1/+7This was posted on here about 3 months ago.
- lozasril, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6The animations alone used on this movie would have cost a fortune a decade ago. Imagine how much will Beowulf-standard animations cost 10 years from now?
- DouglasQ, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5It's your birthday!
- pbuschma, on 07/03/2009, -2/+7how can this be done soo cheaply, i do not understand
- oldcrows40, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5This made it to the front page at least a month ago. Still a good movie.
- crilen007, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Edit: Wow, you comment about a lot of things at once.
Kudos. - mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4stock video and audio clips my friend... cheap!
- LilJimmyNordin, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5That YouTube player chugs like a fatty on free milkshake day.
- jasonh1234, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4This is the kind of stuff I wished me and my friends could have done when we were like 12.
All we had was a crappy VHS camcorder, a 486DX and cardboard tubes for swords. :-P - inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3You win a box of "Adhesive Medical Strips".
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Edit: Avid, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier
Compositing: Adobe After Effects or Autodesk Combustion
3D: Maya or 3DS Max
CGI landscapes: Eon Vue 7 - adrastos9, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4wow that was awesome....and for <5k i don't believe it...
- omgukk, on 07/03/2009, -2/+5it's as if this was post already. And on the actual web site.

- dafragsta, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Everything is cheaper when people work for free. That's the biggest money saver right there.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3I must be out of the loop, anyone can do this? What software should I use?
- hawksfan03, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3this is old - http://digg.com/movies/The_Ultimate_Fan_Made_Hobbi ... submitted 2 months ago.
- Mujokan, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3It goes like this:
After the Hobbit, Gollum leaves the Misty Mountains and goes looking for Bilbo. Eventually he ends up in Mordor (not with Saruman) where he is tortured. This is why Sauron knows about "Baggins" and sends the Riders to the Shire. This is when Gollum meets Shelob -- when he is let out of Mordor and he leaves via Cirith Ungol.
Gandalf gets worried that the ring is the One Ring. He goes looking for Gollum to check it out, but can't find him. Then he grabs Aragorn, whom of course he knows well due to Aragorn being often at Rivendell and generally protecting the Shire. Gandalf leaves Aragorn to it, and Aragorn finds Gollum soon after he leaves Mordor -- I think in the Marshes near the Black Gate.
Aragorn ties up Gollum and marches him up to Legolas' dad in Mirkwood, to wait for Gandalf's questioning. Unfortunately the wood elves let him escape when he refuses to come down a tree they would let him climb, and then orcs attack them when night falls.
Gollum then manages to get lost in Moria, and he is near the west gate when the Fellowship turns up. Then he follows them until Frodo and Sam capture him just after they leave the Fellowship. - Kapitaine, on 07/03/2009, -3/+65000 = wow!
The only things that I saw could have been improved are the choreography of the fight scenes. They were just a bit plain and didn't really escalate into a climax.
Hmm, gonna watch again! :) - uremomsnitemare, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4OK i have a few things to say... I just watched the entire thing and I think it was very entertaining. Most definitely one of the best things I've seen on youtube. Anyway, I had a question... I'm not sure if it's based on the actual series or if I'm taking it to seriously... but wasn't gollum captured by the orcs and taken to saruman where they found out the location of the ring? Maybe I missed that part in this movie but I feel like they looked over it and I'm not sure why.
Any other opinions? - Crashwithuhk, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3That really depends. If they had editors/animators with their own equipment doing the work for free then the costs of hardware and software wouldn't really have to factor into the budget at all. I doubt they acquired stuff like that solely for this film.
- RegularUser, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Dugg for music.
- readerz, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2I would like to know how they managed to make this film for 5,000 thats insane!
- Ninapendawewe, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3i thought it was really dull
- PeppermintPig, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3I think Strider's costume looked a bit too clean and new, which could have EASILY been remedied to improve the look of this production. That detail was more glaring to me than any concern over the Orc costumes and makeup.
The 3D work was a mixed bag. The outdoor locations were acceptable. Didn't like the tavern extras and some interior location choices ruined the atmosphere itself.
More good than bad overall. - Topwolf, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3Yes you are right but this "film" fills in the gap of what had happened afterwords to gollum...remember in the beginning of Fellowship of the Rings when Gandolf leaves?!?! He tells Frodo "keep it hidden, keep it safe"...well alot of time goes by in the sotry line between that point and when Frodo actually leaves the village upon Gandolf's return. SO when Gandolf leaves this is where this "story" picks up...it kind of fills in the gap that was just a presumption in the movie...hope this helps
- LilJimmyNordin, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3You don't have to be able to make a film in order to qualify you to say that you didn't like a film. It can be a great achievement and a crushing bore at the same time. Don't be a *****.
- Topwolf, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2It deserves a double post...There is alot of stuff on digg that gets recycled...you'll eventually see alot of things pop up on the front page but for some reason they only show up a maximum of 23 times...
- martoq, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Is it me or is the audio behind by a 1/2 a second.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3How could it possibly have been done for that amount? I'm not sure I believe it. Even if the actors donated their services, and they did the directing, producing and editing themselves, there's still equipment, CGI, props, costumes, locations, etc... Seems impossible to get that quality for $5k.
