The Definitive Top 25 Movies of 2007
slashfilm.com — This is the time of year when all the critics and websites begin to publish their Top 10 lists for 2007. But every list is different, just like every person is different.
- 914 diggs
- digg it
- semcents, on 12/24/2007, -32/+3Interesting list. Did not see Pirates or Spiderman or Sherk or Live free or Die hard
- Falldog, on 12/24/2007, -1/+27For good reason.
- thirty6chambers, on 12/24/2007, -1/+16Thank god you didn't write the list.
- stonedslacker, on 12/24/2007, -0/+9The writer's going for quality here, not quantity.
- davidrools, on 12/24/2007, -5/+3What's Sherk? ;)
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -5/+1that post wuz made fir lulz i bets.
- glinsvad, on 12/24/2007, -12/+2WTF - is the author a 11 year old girl or something? Ratatouille, Juno, Hairspray, Hot Fuzz, Enchanted, Knocked Up!?!
- copypasterepeat, on 12/24/2007, -1/+7Sorry, eleven year old girl.... Hot Fuzz?
Did you see a different Hot Fuzz to me?- spudnic, on 12/24/2007, -0/+7And Kncoked Up was (obviously) about unplanned pregnancy, hardly a kids' film.
- Ayavaron, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2For that matter, so was Juno.
- glinsvad, on 12/25/2007, -1/+1Well, where I live, this is what the kids watch these days. Then again, it was the first country in the world to legalize printed pornography...
- copypasterepeat, on 12/24/2007, -1/+7Sorry, eleven year old girl.... Hot Fuzz?
- Arkz, on 12/24/2007, -9/+2i disagree with this list, Hot Fuzz sucked, and Die Hard 4 was good, much better than Fuzz... so it shoulda been on there
- ryansmith18, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3I'm kinda suprised American Gangster wasn't in the top 25. It seemed to me that everybody just loved that movie, but maybe that's just in my area.
- Synova, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1I loved it. =) These lists never have much meaning since everyone has their own taste in movies, but of the movies that I saw on that list I didn't see any I disliked.
- bigthree, on 12/24/2007, -1/+18nice that it didn't just choose top money makers
- stonedslacker, on 12/24/2007, -1/+4However they did miss out on one of this year's Top 5 - "The Man From Earth" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/
At first I thought that this movie's just getting such great word-of-mouth publicity on the internet coz its Director spoke positively about bittorrent and file-sharing. But when I watched it I realized its actually one of the best and most thought-provoking movies I have ever seen. Why it's left out from even the IMDB list beats me. Control is at 14 with 8.2 (3,780) and Lars and the Real Girl is no. 9 with 8.3 (2,445). But The Man From Earth with 8.4 (5,430) is left out.- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1hmmm. I downloaded this move, but never got around to watching it. I guess I should give it a shot over the holidays.
- coldfusion1970, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Well its only been out in the US for just about a month, so i guess its too new (most people wont have seen it).
- chijim70, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2or "The lookout" - http://imdb.com/title/tt0427470/
Superior writing, acting, and direction and as far as I've seen thus far the best movie of the year aside from Reign Over Me - http://imdb.com/title/tt0490204/ which I'd put right up along side it.
Neither is on the list yet enchanted is... wtf? - JettaMan, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2How is that definitive? Looks like a pretty lame list to me.
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -3/+1Yeah, instead they chose the critical darlings that didn't make jack.
Speaking of, why is SICKO in that list? It failed financially and was panned by most critics, even extremely left leaning ones.- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3It was panned? I heard alot of people liked that film.
- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1King of Kong: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/ is an AMAZING film.
I started watching it just because of the crazy skills shown by old school players on games like Pacman and Kong. The film really gets into a gameers head. These are the guys who were there at the very very start of gaming. While they are old now....they are going to war. This film follows one mans epic fight to be the greatest Kong player EVER.
Its a documentary and not a made up story, its wonderful.

- stonedslacker, on 12/24/2007, -1/+4However they did miss out on one of this year's Top 5 - "The Man From Earth" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/
- Falldog, on 12/24/2007, -8/+38Great to see Hot Fuzz up there.
- ChuckFreck, on 12/24/2007, -14/+5Hot Fuzz sucked balls.
- banmaster, on 12/24/2007, -2/+8I wasn't too impressed by Fuzz, however I doubt that any movie from Pegg and Frost could ever live up to Shaun of the Dead or Spaced.
- unrealalexk, on 12/24/2007, -6/+2Hot Fuzz was barely funny...whatever merit that list had was thrown away when they put Hot Fuzz in the top 25 movies of the year...
- SSUK, on 12/24/2007, -2/+9Hot Fuzz was a funny film, one which had everything going for it, great atmosphere, great characters. It was subtly funny all the way through, however a lot of the humour you wont pick up on first time watching. There were obvious 'funny' parts which made you laugh, however there was a lot of it which you still find funny inbetween those bits. I feel some of this may be lost on the American audience who is far more used to typical comedy movies which pack one-liner jokes everywhere they can and end up making it a horrible mess of joke and serious undertones which just end up making you confused if you should feel sorry for the main characters or just laugh at them. For not being that sort of movie, Hot Fuzz deserves to be in this top 25 listing.
- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+7The Americans won't get everything out of it either. There are alot of references to UK culture and 'in jokes' that anyone outside the UK might miss.
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 12/24/2007, -2/+29I never heard of "There Will be Blood" - did I just completely miss that movie or what?
- thirty6chambers, on 12/24/2007, -1/+9It's due out on December 26th. There seems to be no commercials for it running on tv, or at least during the shows I watch. I highly suggest you google the trailer for the movie... it's really good stuff.
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 12/24/2007, -3/+6so is this movie already out in other countries or what? how can they place a movie thats not released on the #1 spot? Blind Faith? WTF?!?
someone please explain this to me, it's mind bottling !- jaykester, on 12/24/2007, -0/+111) Bottles aside, if you had seen several of these films you would have caught a preview for There Will Be Blood.
2) These are based on critical reviews, not faith, so at least have faith that the critics have previewed it.
3) When P.T. Anderson is releasing a film, film fans know. When P.T. Anderson is releasing a film starring Daniel Day-Lewis, everybody should know. - chijim70, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3I'm going to guess without checking it out that the guy is close enough to the industry to get to attend junkets (pre release showings).
- davidrools, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2i think members of the academy and maybe critics too get to see the full length movies before they're out...to write reviews and make nominations for awards and such. I don't know exactly how it works but sometimes those screeners leak ;)
- ieatsmurfs, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1It's had a limited release across the nation, for a week or two I believe. It releases over a wider audience Dec 26th, and then a wider audience the week after I believe.
- althanis, on 12/25/2007, -1/+1To save you future embarrassment, the correct phrase is "ming-boggling" as in, it boggles the mind. Bottles have nothing to do with it.
- jaykester, on 12/24/2007, -0/+111) Bottles aside, if you had seen several of these films you would have caught a preview for There Will Be Blood.
- SSUK, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3I haven't heard of half of these films, mainly because they haven't/wont be released in the UK yet.
- WiZZLa, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1It will be released on December 26th in a very limited release so it can be in contention for the 2007 Academy Awards. It will go wide next year and has been screening (for purchasers & critics) since September, that's how Peter Sciretta has seen it.
- whatthefu, on 12/24/2007, -0/+50This year was certainly a year of critically acclaimed movies that I've never heard of.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1We do seem to have finally reached a point were the cost of entry for a professional looking film has dropped enough to allow some great scripts to get onto the screen. Unfortunately, distribution costs haven't gone that route. Anything that's not average tends to never make it to real theaters in most towns. The good is that it spares people of the vast majority of really horrible movies, the bad is that it also makes it difficult for them to see the movies that were on the other side of the quality mark.
- physicx, on 12/24/2007, -6/+159. The Bourne Ultimatum was a great movie
- 10goto10, on 12/24/2007, -2/+37This list would've been better if it had a link to thepirat... eh, amazon.com for each movie.
- gutfeeling, on 12/24/2007, -2/+5or IMDB, a synopsis of each film would be handy
- davidrools, on 12/24/2007, -3/+1these will be added to my Netflix queue/save list.
- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Yup I just searched all of them and started the download.
- althanis, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1That's interesting, since a couple of them aren't even out i cam versions.
- Hockey13, on 12/24/2007, -4/+11What makes this list more definitive than the top 25 list my 10,000 pet monkeys just hammered out for me?
- duddles, on 12/24/2007, -2/+8Because your pet monkeys didn't try to combine results from imdb users and rotten tomatoes like this guy did. The blurst of times?!
- Shpox, on 12/24/2007, -11/+9Nice to see Superbad in there.
- banmaster, on 12/24/2007, -8/+7No its not.
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -6/+0Nice to see it all the way at the bottom. Too bad 2007 was such a sad year for movies.
..... With exception to Paul Thomas Anderson's movie.
- Jack9, on 12/24/2007, -17/+8As usual, wildly inaccurate. Someone just wanted to show they were an indie art fan. Why does this crap get on the front page with 26 diggs?
//save time, ban subjective lists- zmjone2992, on 12/24/2007, -2/+12since only blockbusters are good movies.
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1Moron*cough&*^SAhem!!
- freakk123, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1The list wasn't subjective, dumbass, read the entire ***** article. It's the combined ratings from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB that determined the rankings.
- Scheissen, on 12/24/2007, -15/+9Most of those are really lame.
- jerryparid, on 12/24/2007, -3/+9I have seen nine of these movies. All I can say is that these nine movies blows your typical Harry Potter or Pirates out of the water. They are more than their plots; they are more than mindless action or adventure.
- Silv23, on 12/24/2007, -5/+22Isn't it kind of arrogant to list "There Will Be Blood" as number one when it hasn't even been officially released yet?
- willdelaney, on 12/24/2007, -2/+5I was just gonna say that lol
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Yeah! Seriously, who would have thought this would exist after multiple screeners?
http://imdb.com/title/tt0469494/awards
Jee Wiz!
- makkaveli19, on 12/24/2007, -1/+3wow the name PERSPOLISE sounded familiar to me so i looked it up. seems interesting. it's supposed to tell you a lot about the new Iranian government.
- duddles, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3Persepolis is a great book - it is about the author growing up in the 70's and 80's in Iran.
- makkaveli19, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2thank you, as an Iranian living in a western country, with not much information about the revolution i think i should read this book.
OR i can watch the movie!
- makkaveli19, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2thank you, as an Iranian living in a western country, with not much information about the revolution i think i should read this book.
- duddles, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3Persepolis is a great book - it is about the author growing up in the 70's and 80's in Iran.
- doctordbx, on 12/24/2007, -8/+11Personally I couldn't watch 'Knocked Up' to the end... it just wasn't that good.
The rest, apart from a couple... never heard of them... and by definition of definitive it isn't the definitive list.- skaughtm, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1this is getting dugg up? it was good, you jsut didnt like it, however that worked out.
- shadowmoose, on 12/24/2007, -5/+10Your telling me a Bourne movie beat out American Gangster? Guess I can never listen to internet reviews again.
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -6/+2American Gangster has so far failed to recoup it's expenses, it's producers and director are being sued by some of the subjects of the film for misrepresentation among other things, and even the most positive reviews were of a "so-so" nature. What do you expect?
- Vaelkar, on 12/24/2007, -1/+7Entirely not true.
-American Gangster had a $100 Mil USD budget. It has so far made $179 Mil USD. It has easily turned a profit.
-No one is being sued over it, Frank Lucas himself went along with the movie, even after saying it is only 20% accurate.
-It is rated at 8.2/10 on IMDB.com, listed as #148 in the top 250 movies of all time.
In light of this evidence, the movie has easily recouped its expenses, no one is getting sued, and the film is listed as one of the best films ever made.- SohailKhanifar, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Bourne Ultimatum has an 8.3 and is ranked 117th.
- Vaelkar, on 12/25/2007, -0/+0I'm not contesting which movie was better, as personally, I haven't seen either. I'm just saying that everything said by "TheCash" is incorrect.
- SohailKhanifar, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Bourne Ultimatum has an 8.3 and is ranked 117th.
- rarson, on 12/24/2007, -0/+4You missed the point of this list, didn't you? "There Will Be Blood" isn't even out yet. I'm guessing they haven't recouped any costs yet either.
- Vaelkar, on 12/24/2007, -1/+7Entirely not true.
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -6/+2American Gangster has so far failed to recoup it's expenses, it's producers and director are being sued by some of the subjects of the film for misrepresentation among other things, and even the most positive reviews were of a "so-so" nature. What do you expect?

- doctordbx, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1I would prefer cake.
- alwilson, on 12/24/2007, -2/+0You are trying to hard to write something clever. It's not working.
- doctordbx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+0The fact that it 'wasn't clever' and snagged your attention says a lot... about you.
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -1/+0You guy's are stupid.
- doctordbx, on 12/24/2007, -1/+0"You guy's are stupid." oh it's just some internet geek trying to be Mr. one-up... I personally don't give a *****, it's just what popped into my head at the time.
- SSUK, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1The cake is a lie
- alwilson, on 12/24/2007, -2/+0You are trying to hard to write something clever. It's not working.
- doctordbx, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1I would prefer cake.
- duddles, on 12/24/2007, -0/+13The problem is that a movie like Enchanted - which was just tolerable enough to garner a fresh tomato from most critics but was on few of their top ten lists - ends up ranking as one of the year's best.
- bariswheel, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Really? As in, snowflakes? ...awww...
- over900000, on 12/24/2007, -4/+4What's this? A top # list not from CRACKED.COM?
- stonedslacker, on 12/24/2007, -0/+7Nice list. Although "The Man From Earth" is conspicuous by its absence.
- rmd34, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2I was reviewing the comments to see if anyone would point this film out. Excellent, thought-provoking film.
- nicolasavru, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2There were two mentions of it in the comments.
Shame, it was one of the best movies I have ever watched.
- nicolasavru, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2There were two mentions of it in the comments.
- skaughtm, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1this movie gets conspicuous comments..
- rmd34, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2I was reviewing the comments to see if anyone would point this film out. Excellent, thought-provoking film.
- NyteStarNyne, on 12/24/2007, -6/+6What's Enchanted doing on there?! Buried.
- mdavis, on 12/24/2007, -3/+4King of Kong!! HELL YEAH!
- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1Thats my number 1 film of the year. I couldn't believe how much I wanted that guy going after the record to do it. The Dick head guy with long hair made me want to shout at the screen. FANTASTIC film.
- identifiedlogo, on 12/24/2007, -1/+9Not a good list...thats it.
- mceggy, on 12/24/2007, -5/+3Enchanted, really?
Most list articles hold atleast a little merit to be dugg, not this one.
Buried. - Splitt3rxx, on 12/24/2007, -15/+11300? transformers?and what the hell is ***** like sicko doing on there.. there are also a few movies there i have never heard of.
- lalilulelo, on 12/24/2007, -4/+6Because they can't be good if you haven't heard of them
- banmaster, on 12/24/2007, -7/+6300 and Xformers both sucked! In both cases their directors have obviously subscribed to the George Lucas school of movie making (look nice but the plot isn't there at all).
- phazon88, on 12/24/2007, -6/+0Dugg. 'Nuff said.
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -0/+7And yet, each one made more by themselves then most of these other movies combined. Hmmm....
- copypasterepeat, on 12/24/2007, -1/+0I don't think film quality is based on the cash.
- rarson, on 12/24/2007, -1/+3I disagree, I thought 300 was a great movie. I can't say anything about Transformers (man, why did I waste the time to type out 4 extra letters?) because I haven't bothered to see it yet.
- scoottie, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3sicko is on there so that people that hate bush have something to vote for rather then actual movies never once heard sicko say that a lot of the people that are denied health care could be covered if there wasn't such a drain on it from illegal immigrants getting health care for free
- SolipsismX, on 12/24/2007, -3/+5Rescue Dawn should have been number 1. Nothing I've seen on that list comes close to Herzog's mastery of film
- dudefaceguyman, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2Eh I wanted to like it, though I got incredibly bored after awhile and almost turned it off halfway through. Ended up fastforwarding it occasionally during the dull parts. I understand some people are in love with it, it's just...A movie only a select few people would enjoy.
- Luthorcorp331, on 12/24/2007, -9/+2Sicko??
Said in the tone of Donald "duck" Dunn from the Blues Brothers chicken wire scene. - Cheezeburgar, on 12/24/2007, -9/+6Sicko is ranked #7... No thanks.
- staffell, on 12/24/2007, -7/+5buried for knocked up - one of the worst movies i've ever seen and the only one i've ever not been able to finish because of that
- doctordbx, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Ha... glad I am not alone. Everyone is like "you have to see knocked up!"... what a load of vomit and I couldn't watch to the end either.
- phazon88, on 12/24/2007, -1/+0Go DIAF.
- gnslngr1919, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1That's a bit of an over-reaction.
- takeo1775, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1I totally agree and I also havent finished watching it. The subject of the movie is too close to heart to make funny. Millions of people are in this situation each year and its no laughing matter.
- skaughtm, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1lol
- Sabretou, on 12/24/2007, -2/+14Wait, 300 wasn't definitive?
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -8/+0300 was a bunch of prententious stink. It looked and played better on paper.
- copypasterepeat, on 12/24/2007, -1/+3I personally liked 300, but it is fair to point out that it was style over substance.
- rarson, on 12/24/2007, -0/+5The emphasis on style was kind of the point.
- Gunsdead, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6300 was awesome
- chkdg8, on 12/24/2007, -5/+3The best list money can buy.
- Retuow, on 12/24/2007, -1/+5Awesome to see Once made the list, an independent Irish movie that turned out to be an international succes. Glen Hansard shows he really can act in this movie, and sing.
- sonnybobiche, on 12/24/2007, -4/+3Come on. Bourne Supremacy has the same score as No Country for Old Men? I mean, I like Bourne just as much as the next guy, but please. I can't believe they pay this guy to review movies.
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -4/+3Bourne had an ending that didn't suck, and didn't inspire people to yell out "WTF?!" en mass.
- sonnybobiche, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2If you were one of the people (like the lady next to me) that said WTF when it ended, you just didn't get the movie. I was the guy that started the slow clap. Then again, I also hated the fountain on my first viewing, and have since grown to love it. Maybe it takes repeated viewings for some people?
- rarson, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2I hate people who clap in movie theaters.
- sonnybobiche, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2If you were one of the people (like the lady next to me) that said WTF when it ended, you just didn't get the movie. I was the guy that started the slow clap. - MasterMO, on 12/24/2007, -9/+4where is I am legend?
- finalfantasyIII, on 12/24/2007, -5/+0What?
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -2/+3In crappy remake hell where it belongs, next to The Poseidon Adventure.
- SSUK, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1I am Legend was a terribly boring film.
- BumCheese, on 12/24/2007, -5/+2Agreed, I Am Legend is one, if not THE, best film of the year.
- ninedesign, on 12/24/2007, -3/+5Glad to see This Is England up there.
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Yeah, considering that's the most it's going to be "seen."
- copypasterepeat, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1This Is England is my favourite film this year. Absolutely brilliant. Shane Meadows is a talented guy. If you like good film check out Dead Man's Shoes.
- sparced, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2The Year of the Dog is underrated and I don't care what anyone says.
- luvboy, on 12/24/2007, -5/+0king kong.....
- rarson, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1No...
- mrblue182, on 12/24/2007, -3/+4hot fuzz should have been higher
- TheCash, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Amen
- enzobot24, on 12/24/2007, -2/+3Anyone reading this list, that hasn't seen "No Country for Old Men", must go out - right now - and see it. It isn't one of those critics-love-it-but-it-sucks movies... it's the best movie of the year.
- moviscop, on 12/24/2007, -3/+0WHERE IS BUG??????
- arcooke, on 12/24/2007, -4/+4uTorrent is going nuts right now
- kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Yup I bet this article being on Digg has got thousands and thousands of people to open up the old bittorent client. The crazy thing is thaat while the MPAA hae us for this, its the only way word will spread to the masses about some of these film. We watch and tell our friends and they tell theirs etc.
- leoedin, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2Good to see an absence of the dire excuse for a film that was The Golden Compass - just because it's big budget doesn't mean it's good! (yet all the adverts around here seem to sell it on its "excellent" reviews.... !)
Although I have to wonder at the omission of transformers when there's movies like enchanted there... Transfomers was an amazing movie (for all the wrong reasons >_>) - TroHax, on 12/24/2007, -6/+0No "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry"? :(
Nice list thought. :) - Dorepoll, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1This is the first list with Persepolis on it. Well deserved, an amazing adaptation to an amazing graphic novel. Everyone should see it.
- ghassan, on 12/24/2007, -3/+2I believe that the list should include some other great movies such as Deathproof, Caramel. But apparently the movies in this "top 25" includes only "commercial" movies, which is sad.
- Jektal, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Grindhouse is on there, in the "Honorable Mentions" bit
- CokeBear, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4Totally missed what will be the best movie of the year: Charlie Wilson's War. With screenplay by Aaron Sorkin, and starring Tom Hanks, how can it not be on that list?
- dudefaceguyman, on 12/24/2007, -6/+11Superbad is on the list..Really? I thought that movie was terrible. Was just random vulgar language and a plot that was stupid as hell.
The Mclovin/Cop parts were ok. Though those few scenes weren't enough to save the movie. Craptacular overall in my opinion. - Evildudetx, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2The little respect I had for /Film just went out the window. I will now bury any and every article from their site.
- Scroogl, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2Great to see Juno on there so high. That is already one of my favourite movies.
- jamesb0i, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1YES, always wanted to see that film, looks very decent
