- Arcae, on 07/23/2008, -0/+15The Dark Knight finally got us to the point of no longer wanting to just see our favorite heroes on the big screen, but needing it to be a good product as well. Comic book movies can now take one of two directions: 1. Fall short of the bar set by TDK and slowly fade until Hollywood wants nothing to do with them, or 2. Continue to raise the bar. The movie that I think we be a big part in this will be Watchmen. That seems tailor made for a movie, and the people behind it seem to know what they are doing when it comes to making movies. Another series that should be interesting to follow would be the Avengers saga that's going on. Either way, we are going to have to wait and see how this all turns out.
- goodbick, on 07/23/2008, -0/+14300 will hold up no better than any other mindless entertaining and somewhat stylish action movie.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/23/2008, -2/+12Tim Burtons Batman were great, dont compare them to the Dark Night they are completely different films. Both are great and deserve the utmost respect.

300 is gonna be the one that stands the test of time? Really? - AvronC, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9What the hell are you trying to tell us? You liked some movies but not others? Why do we care?
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -1/+8Great article, and it looks like Christian Bale agrees. Wasn't there something about him moving onto Terminator now?
- cadmiumpaint, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7Nolan's batman films prove that you can take these characters and move them off the newsprint pages and make them respectable action/crime movies if you do them right.
The trick is you have to evolve the characters and take the kitsch and self parody out of them for it to work. - TheMachine1, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7Yeah his version was over the top like the old TV show. Most people do not follow the comic book version and had no problem with that style of film.
- goodbick, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6The writer needs to do his research if he thinks comic books have been "wildly popular" since the 1930's. Has he never heard of the comic book crashes?
- smacksaw, on 07/22/2008, -12/+16They will come and go as tastes change. I didn't care for the old Superman movies. I didn't care for Tim Burton's Batman, either. These movies are successful now because they either catch the current mood, are simply excellent, or both. Tim Burton's ***** is ridiculous. But you could have made Spider-Man today, in 5 years or 30 years ago and that story would be a hit, period. While X-Men might not hold up over time, 300 probably will.
- aflaks, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5Well thats what happens when the only good movies are those of comic books.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3your ***** is ridiculous.
- Lister169, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4SPOON!!
- philberttheduck, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3No. How does it feel to know you're further stereotyping being old and cranky?
- Haoie, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Please no Aquaman movie. Please.
- phamtasm, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Awesome! I'm so glad Die Fledermaus/Batmanuel was in the TDK!
- thirty6chambers, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2so what you're saying is "i don't know" ....
- sotose, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2300 didn't stand a week before looking silly for me.
- MondoPest, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Excellent article.
- KingGorilla, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I'd like a movie made about The Creeper
- philberttheduck, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1The webcrawler is in our sights, and I want to SQUASH THAT *****!
- diggmeyers, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1things are certainly looking up in the comic book adaptation world
- innocentsinner, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1You didn't see the preview before Dark Knight? He's gonna be John Connor in Terminator 4.
- JakeyG14, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Choose your words carefully, Digger.
- Steinr, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1There is no spoon.
- Soup4Brains, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Ironically, Alan Moore, the creator of Watchmen, hates the idea of a movie and said that in the Watchmen graphic novel they specifically set out to do things that couldn't be done in movies. I'm not entirely sure what those are, but maybe that's because I haven't read the graphic novel yet (it sold out everywhere thanks to the trailer).
- smashfest, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I have a feeling we won't see any more Fantastic Four sequels. at least not in their current format.
- Kelmon, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Here's the thing, in the past few days there have been 40 Front Page articles on Digg about the new Batman film. 40! Why? I've never seen this much coverage of a movie on the site and it's not like it's the best film ever.
Aside from that, it feels pretty good. I like being old and cranky. I expect I'll soon start talking about films being better in my day and watching classics like Black Hawk Down. This, I believe, will be better than the endless parade of comic book movies that are just an excuse for tacky CGI. - Ayavaron, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I assumed that was intentional and ironic. The lyrics to the song are also pretty appropriate to Watchmen. It seems like a clever choice for the trailer to me.
- bigtizzle, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1The author of this article assumes that Burton's Batman in '89 is the original superhero film. Superhero movies have been blockbusters for 30 years, ever since the original Superman: The Movie was the highest grossing film in the history of cinema. As long as they're done well (as both the original Superman and The Dark Knight were) then films based on comics will be successful.
- MiNGLED, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Maybe they will stop making films based on comic books once they also stop making films based on books?
- MiNGLED, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Alan Moore hates all the movies based on his comics. That's his opinion. Other people think some of the films were OK(ish).
- sandersdamnit, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1You are an Idiot he is perfect for that role
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1It wasn't played before IMAX as far as I know. I've seen it twice in IMAX and the only trailer shown is for Watchmen.
- jocknerd, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I believe your facts are wrong. Jaws became the highest grossing film when it came out in 1975. Star Wars surpassed it in 1977. E.T. surpassed Star Wars in 1982. Jurassic Park surpassed E.T. in 1992. And Titanic surpassed E.T. in 1997. Don't know if anything has surpassed Titanic yet, can only hope.
- whyisntcakesin, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0All that's going to happen with super hero movies is that production houses are going to start churning out as many super hero movies as possible, assuming that people will simply go see them because they are super hero movies. In turn, a bunch of garbage will be produced and after a few rounds people will get tired and they'll move on to something else.
ie; Madden video games, "indie" music, boy bands, horror movies - GunstarCowboy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0I wouldn't let it worry you. Try to find something less insanely pretentious to put your energy into.
- jmbrysk, on 07/28/2008, -1/+1The Dark Knight is going to be a really difficult movie to top. Nolan's Batman films succeeded in creating a very realistic world, which is what made The Joker and Two-Face work so well in those movies. People are more likely to be afraid of something that is realistic. Unfortunately for the rest of Hollywood, Batman is one of the few superheroes that can be realized in a world focused on realism. Watchmen might wind up being a really good movie, but it will ultimately lack the ability to draw the same kinds of emotional responses from it's audiences.
- ToysRUs, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0I think he just roughed them up a little.
- enjoyincubus19, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0I cringe when I think about super hero movie failures like Daredevil and Catwoman.
- interwog, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0Of course. A highly-anticipated sequel to one of the most critically successful and commercially successful comic-book based movies ever made, starring an actor who gives his final and arguably his greatest performance before his suicide gets released, and it represents a new era for comic-book movies. It doesn't. TDK is too different from other comic-book movies to be comparable. No super-hero movie will be as successful until MAYBE the third batman movie. I'm getting a bit tired of hearing about how all of a sudden everything in relation to these movies has changed thanks to TDK.
- wild, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1Digging me down doesn't make it not true guys, lol.
- Xette, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0Perhaps one day people will eventually see comic to movie films as they do with teen horror flicks. Overly done and eventually the same old story....how a nobody becomes a somebody or a scientific accident results in inhuman strength. It's sad really because I absolutely love the in depth world of comics and more recently some of their films.
Directors have to cram a diverse and complex comic book series (X-Men, Spider Man, Iron Man, etc...) into 2 hours and if it does well, then spin offs will ensue. But even so, it will leave out details that one or many fans absolutely love about the comic. You can't please them all of course but I think it's important for the direction to know the roots. - enjoyincubus19, on 07/23/2008, -1/+0Good Riddance....
Except for Jessica.... - SinisterSaracen, on 07/23/2008, -3/+1I loved The Dark Knight dearly.
And I hope that Wolverine is an R-rated slashfest: Two hours of Wolverine vs Ninjas. That would rock. (And be faithful to at least part of the Wolverine series) - wild, on 07/23/2008, -4/+1They used a song from the worst Batman film for the Watchmen trailer. That doesn't bode well...
- Kelmon, on 07/23/2008, -4/+1Personally, I'm getting sick and tired of comic books being turned into special effects extravaganzas. Yes, I'm sure the new Batman film is good but do we really need more of these films? But, of course, since these movies make so much money we'll be stuck with them until their appeal drops. Just give me a movie with a good plot, characters, and not a CGI marathon.
I will also note, for the first and last time, that the endless tirade of Dark Knight articles on Digg is highly irritating. The film is out, every mother and their dog has seen it now, can we move onto something else now? - alkajazz, on 07/23/2008, -7/+1One reason why wolverine movie might suck
Dead pool is being played by ***** Ryan Reynolds ***** RYAN REYNOLDS!
