- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54I have news for you. The 'agenda' of this movie is exactly the same as the 'agenda' of every other movie out there. To make money.
- Nitsugua, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53And even worse, the whole audience laughed during some moments that were meant to be thrilling... :-)
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -12/+59All these people whining incessantly about "agendas" (gay, religious, whatever) certainly seem to have pretty big ones of their own. Plus, the tired yet ubiquitous buzzphrases like "anti-family", "why do you hate America?", "war on Christianity", and "_______ agenda" are so ironic that it's almost funny. Almost.
Humans disagree with each other on almost everything, and we all have things we like or don't like. That is something that should be celebrated. It's what makes us interesting and unique. If someone has a different point of view, our reaction should be wanting to examine that school of thought rather than trying to suppress it. - Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Well, they can hear you when you're premiering at the goddamned Cannes Film festival. They're sitting in the theater with all these people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -38/+73Heh. Church nuts are funny.
- Inthearmor, on 10/12/2007, -14/+44Borring movie? I'm not suprised, I thought the book itself was borring! And the twist at the end seemed really loose and improbable. I didn't buy it. The book just wasn't that well written! Flame me down, but Dan Brown is no Ted Dekker, that's for sure.

Too bad it'll still make $100+ million, while brilliant films like f.ex The Life Aquatic get totally ignored by the public. :( - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27That's funny, because I always pictured Langdon as Will Smith, and Sophie as Jessica Simpson, and instead of driving a Smart she has a pink, CGI Cadillac that talks and helps them solve the mysteries.
And the first anagram works out to be, "ADIDAS RULES."
But maybe I've just been in Hollywood for too long. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31What a shame - but the real audience of the da vinci code aren't cannes, so I don't think Sony has anything to worry about.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20I had an interesting discussion today with friend of mine. I said the big hush is becaus the movie is a stinker. The newspaper said "Will it be bigger than Titanic??" He said he will likely see it because he watches anything. I said, just you wait until the first reviews hit the street. It won't be bigger than Titanic, but it will sink just as fast.
Peeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww! - zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26lol even the book was awfull and full of errors, the guy really never been to Louvre Museum
- Davedough, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14A fictional story about an already fictional character is boring? So, 95% of the movies that are ever put out, you don't enjoy?
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20I completely agree.
I hate that we cannot get over our differences, and i hate the fact that we normally desire our own beliefs to rule over others. Curiousity is what drives us in science, math, and philosophy. It should also drive us in social behavior. - calhoun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Yeah but the whole book is presented as fiction in a non-fiction universe. Priory of Sion? Please....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priory_of_Sion - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@kimos - Tom Hanks never made a bad movie? Have you ever seen Joe vs. the Volcano? Tom Hanks had a horrible string of movies - lately, though, he has had a great streak of movies.
Variety also has a poor movie review. - sergiolopes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11dude, you're describing 99% of the movies. Boring because it's fiction?!?!
- JAppi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Religion might be made up *****. Unfortunately this movie does nothing to prove it.
- thedazman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@aplardi "it is just an Indiana Jones type story, nothing more, and not presented as fact, so who cares..."
Ummmm, does he not say at the very beginning of the book "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate"?
Oh yeah, it does... moving on.
This is one of the many reasons why the book is fiction though...
Dan Brown begins The Da Vinci Code with a page labeled "Fact," on which he describes the Priory of Sion as "a European society founded in 1099, a real organization" (1). The Priory is Brown's central focus of conspiracy, power, wealth, and historical significance; he based much of his "research" on the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, in which supposedly long-undiscovered documents (Les Dossiers Secrets) reveal the history of this society and contain an actual list of the Priory's Grand Masters-including such men as Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton, and Victor Hugo (113).
In truth, the Priory was a club created in 1956 by Pierre Plantard, who later testified under oath that he had fabricated the entire hoax. The actual society existed only in the novel and in the mind of the late Pierre Plantard. See also Dossiers Secrets, Les; Holy Blood, Holy Grail; Plantard, Pierre. - CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15I think he's referring to Jesus.
And unless you actually believe that the Bible is real and not just a pice of fiction used to control the mass, its easy to assume that Jesus is just a made up character.
I believe that Jesus was a real man with great ideas, But I don't believe the crap about him being the son of God. Thats how I though before I read the Da Vinci Code and thats how I still see things. - 3lite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12like The Lord of the Rings, eh?
- aristan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12There's a reason Reno seems like the perfect Fache... Dan Brown based Fache on Reno.
- Hammurabi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree. While I appreciate that the Da Vinci Code got a lot of people reading books that normally don't, I have to say that it is definitely in the top ten worst books I have ever read. I've discussed this book with about twenty people, none of whom have the same concern for how poorly it was written, however. Interesting storyline, but awful writing. I think that many Americans will still get caught up in the controversial nature of the movie, much like the Last Temptation of Christ and the Passion, that the movie will ride on that current (with the help of PR) to popularity.
- stanton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8never judge a book by it's movie ;)
- Bluejaye, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Who gives a crud about Cannes? I haven't liked a single movie that they gave a "best of" award to. However, "Angels & Demons" is Dan Brown's best book. Much better than "The DaVinci Code," IMO.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I have to agree with the majority of the posters here, this book was poorly written. I just read it this week (I had tried to read it twice before but never made it further than page 50), but decided I should read it before the film is released.
While the book may be popular (I'll admit it was entertaining), its popularity does not establish it as a great work. Do you consider "American Idol" to be a great work of film/television just because it is popular? No, it is drivel for the masses.
Dan Brown's writing style is very sophomoric. He uses gimmicks (with poor execution to boot) to keep the reader in suspense. There are parts of this book where the foreshadowing hardly stops short of saying, "Just wait until the crazy twist of events 2 hours from now."
Finally, the "intricate" puzzles in the book can be solved by anyone who has done a few crossword puzzles and an occasional jumble during their lifetime. - santiago1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8 I bet you're a real blast at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, you partay animal, you....
- zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Angels and Demons has far more pseudo-scientific ***** in it. Along with stuff that just plain doesn't make sense. Mainly because Dan Brown was trying to be like Neal Stephenson, and was out of his element for any of the science bits.
In many ways, The DaVinci code was the same book with a slightly different setting that was more in his element. - AlanLivingston, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18Yeah... I agree with you. What kind of ADD afflicted author are you when your only device for changing action in the story-telling is to create a new chapter?
Hundreds of chapters in a book? Chapters a page long? I get distracted from the story when these chapters headings come along every couple of pages.
As far as not being a "...crappy book if it is so famous", I think you give the mainstream audience of these books too much credit. Brown's books aren't written for the real thinkers. I think "Digital Fortress" proved that. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Never judge a movie by its book. ;)
- mizzoucat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Looks like others (albeit a handful) agree that this movie stinks.....
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/da_vinci_code/ - EdwardsNH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Some people just analyze things to much and can't enjoy anything"
...things too much...
: ) - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the book isn't always better...The movie Hackers was way better than the book was.
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12I agree with Elxx. I really enjoyed Dan Brown and I just picked up Angels and Demons so I'm looking forward to reading that one too. His "page long chapter" writing style is actually quite nice, I really liked it.
- vigil, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I never quite understood why of all of Dan Brown's books, this one did the best (not that this means I endorse any of his writing just that out of three books of his I was subjected to this is by far the most poorly written).
That said, I hate to see Hanks go down in flames like this but he hasn't been in a remarkable movie in some time. Lets hope the rest of the hyped movies that are coming out this summer don't end up as crap as this one. - tdyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7yeah...cuz i only heard about star wars like 9 months before it came out... or LotR...idiot

Dude, deep breaths. It's just a stupid little website, and a bunch of people just clicked on an image of a red thumb down. That's all. People can't see the comment you made right off, too bad. Get over it. No need for whining about how society won't conform to your value set, no need to label the people who disagree with you as liberals, no need to get all butt-hurt over a stupid little negative number.
If you're so concerned about your values having a role in society, you should do something instead of crying about "agendas" in the comment section of a stupid article on a random website. - CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10One major problem you will have with reviews that come out for The Da Vinci Code, is that anyone who is very religious will go out of their way to give the movie the worst review they can. Instead of reading reviews that could easily be tainted by religionist belief. Just go see the movie for your self.
- tdyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7but people accept it as fact.
so it is actually worse. - evetsleep, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@kimos: Don't know that I agree with you there about Tom Hank's and bad movies. I honestly thought Joe vs. the Volcano was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but baring that..I agree with you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6didnt like the books myself either, thought they were childish and predictable at times. But i thought they would make good films, because you can't hollywood-ize the book as it is already.
- cybershoplifter, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"Da Vinci Code Part II" ....Plot - The Pope hires Cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci) and his red hot girlfriend Marisa Tomei to use street smarts to defend the Catholic Church.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I would have to disagree, I think Brown portrays much of the "historical context" of his book as fact. He uses the word fact over and over. Furthermore, the dialog of the book often tries to make one feel ignorant for not knowing these "facts". Yes, we all know it is a work of fiction, but Brown purposely tried to blur the lines -- a technique that has duped many uninformed readers.
- moron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think you forget that most people QUOTE the bible, few people actually READ it! (that is why most people mis-quote it)
- xpgeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I absolutely love Ian McKellen's comment on the controversy, seen in a Yahoo news story.
Ian McKellen, an openly gay actor who plays Leigh Teabing in The Da Vinci Code, sought to make light of the controversy.
"I'm very happy to believe that Jesus was married," he said. "I know the Catholic Church has problems with gay people and I thought this would be absolute proof that Jesus was not gay." - CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Just because cannes didn't like the movie doesn't mean its bad, There have been tons of blockbuster hits that the cannes didn't like. Cannes don't sit back and enjoy movies they nickpick and analyze them to death. Unless its about some guy with a disability who turns into a hero during some historic event its very hard to win them over.
I'm more then willing to bet that the Da Vinci Code will at least wind up on the top 25 Highest grossing movies.
60.5 million copies have been sold and almost everyone who has purchased the book will see it at least once. - evetsleep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Definately agree....J vs. V was most likely, in my memory, one of the worst movies ever made.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I liked the frequency of the chapters, it increased the suspense in some parts. The story will be telling something about Langdon, then there's a gunshot somewhere, and...
The story flips back to somebody else. You just have to keep reading to find out what happens, the book was hard to put down because of this. - hughns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agreed - the book was absolutely woeful. If you're interested in obscure, esoteric history without all the ridiculous, cheesy plot elements, I highly recommend checking out Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault's_Pendulum_(book) - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9The book was boring, I just can't see how people think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. The pacing was slow, and that "twist" towards the end could be seen coming a mile away. It's just not that great....
