- Gizza, on 07/23/2008, -4/+30I don't see anything wrong with sequels as long a they are good sequels. If every sequel was as good as the last, then what's the problem with more of them?
That's not to say that original material isn't good, but we can have both. - cygnus2112, on 07/23/2008, -0/+19Cure to Sequels: Just kill absolutely everyone off. See: Titanic.
- FeloniusMonkey, on 07/23/2008, -0/+12I'm still waiting for History Of The World Pt 2!
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10"Villains are like giant missiles. You know how when you shoot two giant missiles in opposite directions, they can cancel each other out? So that it's almost like you didn't fire any missiles at all?"
What the hell is he talking about? - Haoie, on 07/23/2008, -3/+12The reasons sequals are made is because they appeal to audiences [moreso than standalone titles], especially if they're familar with the earlier films.
- HallenbeckJoe, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9i thought it was about Sequel-*****!
- shutaro, on 07/23/2008, -5/+14Am I the only one who thought this article was about rampant squirrels?
- RealmDown, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8"There's no stopping the deluge of continuations."
For example, this story will probably be resubmitted and hit the front page next week too. - FeloniusMonkey, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7I thought it was about rampant squirrel-*****!
- mdnghtblue, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7another reason sequels are popular and expected is because people like watching characters they're already familiar with. the same is true for book series.
- ordig, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8I think you answered your own question. The problem with sequels is that they are not original.
Sequals are a way for Hollywood to capitalize on previously successful material, and usually follow a fairly predictable formula. At that point, the film is not art so much as it is an assembly line manufactured facsimlie. There is a difference.
They other problem is that they suck away resources from films that are original. - FeloniusMonkey, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Killing people off doesn't necessarily prevent sequels-- they'll just pop right back up, accompanied by some lame-ass twist... See "24" for more details.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Keep in mind the previous record was Spiderman 3...
- traveler19, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4when we're out of sequels we'll make....prequels!!! mmmyesss!!
- UtahApocalyse, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4The Cure would be Creativity.... not much of that around these days.
- digiguy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3As long as the actors want to do them and getting paid, why not. No one is forcing people to watch them in the theaters.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3I didn't like how they showed Starwars when they said not to do threequels or trilogy's. Starwars is the best example of a trilogy gone good.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3That doesn't mean its the best movie ever, it means that it was priced higher because it was hyped.
- ordig, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3TV shows and serial dramas are a different medium altogether.
- homah, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3That didn't stop them from making Titanic 2.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vD4OnHCRd_4 - Ryanwb, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Disney churns out direct to video sequals with zero regard for content. My kids like them so I guess that's all that matters. I never really understood how Ariel returned to the sea in the Little Mermaid II and III. Why did she act like a total bitch in the first place if she just ended up coming back. Silly Disney
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3The original trilogy
- Pthalio, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3What about the Crow.. even the actor's death didn't stop some bad sequels...
- krakkinem, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I actually thought it said "rampant sequel *****."
- Pthalio, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3And yet the poor ewok is almost universally hated...
50 Reasons why return of the Jedi sucked:
http://www.phxff.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=765&FORUM_ ... - gellfex, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3The reason for sequels is the same as the reason for recycling comics and sitcoms into films, the shallow people who claw their way to the top in Hollywood wouldn't know good writing if it was glued to their eyeballs, so they play it safe with a "proven" product concept and then throw hundreds of millions at it.
There's a Hollywood urban legend that a frustrated screenwriter once sent 50 copies of "Casablanca" out under the title "Everybody goes to Rick's". With the exception of the few scriptreaders who recognized it, it got resoundingly rejected.
Just in SF, there's decades of amazing literature just begging to be made into film, but crap cookie cutter splatter concepts are what gets greenlighted, with the exception of an inexplicable run of PK Dick stories, mostly gutted. When was the last time a Hugo or Nebula award winning story got produced? Where's Neuromancer, Startide Rising, and Snowcrash? - MaynardJK, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Star Wars wasn't the best example of a good trilogy. Jedi wasn't that good imo. The ewoks were Lucas's first attempt at Jar Jar.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Except the previous record owner was Spider-Man 3 which was god-awful.
- thelif, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3There are advantages to having sequels
1)Do not need to introduce the characters and their backgrounds
2)Opportunity to make clever(?) references to previous movies
3)Usually bigger budget to do cooler things - MoralThreat, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Meghan Fox. She was in Transformers. Where I think that boob shot came from.
- scheibs14, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3If it ain't broke don't fix it
- Spoomeister, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2All the real profit for movies is made in foreign and DVD sales. So in many cases I refuse to believe that a sequel existed, and do my extremely small part to hit them in the pocketbook, by not buying the box sets, special editions, etc. on DVD.
For example, I only own the first Highlander movie, the original Matrix movie, the first 2 Alien movies. I only bought Star Trek 2, 4 and 6. And so on.
While I'm at it, I'm pretty pleased that so far there's never been a sequel to Galaxy Quest. That movie really worked, but it only had enough material in it for one movie. - lostwriter, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Hot database admins?
- cnot3, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Jedi was the weakest of the three, but I liked Empire better than the originial, and I think most people do. Sequels work if they are good, that about sums it up.
- Skywise, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Agreed. I never could figure that one out... As the previous responder points out, hype could've done that. But hype alone can't counter a BAD movie. At which point you can only assume that you're left with an audience that prefers McDonalds over a steak dinner, but the bottom line is that producers make movies to make money and that's the final judgement of what makes a god-awful movie. Most critics think Star Wars (the original) sucks too...
- lfigo85, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1who's the girl in the picture next to spidey?
- zip000, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I was wondering that as well.
I'm not exactly up on my ballistics or rocketry or whatever, but I'm pretty sure that that makes no sense.
I think that if you had two missiles going in opposite directions that it would make them each go faster because they would be pushing off of each other...
...maybe I should spend time working instead of thinking about missiles now. - appleseed1234, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I can never enjoy a sequel because I can't get out of my head while watching it that it's far more unlikely than the plot of the first one. It's like getting struck by lightning multiple times. That and most of them blow.
- lfigo85, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1who's the girl in the picture next to spidey?
- Skywise, on 07/23/2008, -2/+3And yet the highest grossing opening weekend movie EVAH - is... a sequel... (as was the previous record owner). Sure, I like original content too. But sequels aren't necessarily bad.
- Andrwmorph, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I dunno, Lion King 413 was pretty sweet. I loved the part where Robo-Simba defeats Zombie-Scar!
- Ahnteis, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1It was a crappy way of saying "too many villains make your movie suck"
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Same for The Blues Brothers. The sequel to that movie scarred me for life.
- cnot3, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Everything in Revenge of the Sith left something to be desired.
- gellfex, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Here's the Casablanca story:http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/Hoaxipedia/Casa ...
- SpencerMc, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I love the little fellas. Better than the freakin' Gungans, at least.
- ChoiceMad, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1There's more to her than meets the eye, no? Okay, probably not.
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1895143680/nm1083271 - inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Hype, is definitely NOT what speed Racer had.
- enjoyincubus19, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Bravo. I have never before read such genuine thruths.
Seriously some sequels are good, especially if the director/studio planned on creating 2 or 3 movies in the first place. But most sequels nowadays are movie studios just tryin to cash in on stale ideas that they know will sell. - mrb712, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Better yet, why don't we pay genuinely talented and creative people to write NEW IDEAS that haven't been seen before. Surely those people exist...somewhere...right?
