- fieldhockey44, on 11/12/2009, -0/+20Where is King Kong? That movie made the Empire State Building iconic.
- backwardscompat, on 11/10/2009, -0/+10Oh Men In Black -- so classic!
- Lowenfels, on 11/10/2009, -5/+14It's interesting how the first 10 or so are absolute classics, no argument. And then they become hit or miss...and then the movies start to totally suck, with everything since 2005 being mediocre at best.
A sign of what's happened to Hollywood over the years or just a coincidence? - StigNordas, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7That's a pretty wide ranging list if you're going to put "Kids" and "The Devil Wears Prada" both in there! But I guess they both share a hot female lead and an evil Antichrist.
- scarlettletter, on 11/10/2009, -2/+8Have to mention Sleepless in Seattle... the end scene!
- sanzsolo, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Did you even see the list? Manhattan, 1979...
- BaddBrainz, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5My favorites are the films listed in the 70's section and ending with Raging Bull (1980).
They were great films and a reflection of the times. It captured a NYC that is long gone. - i23Photography, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5So... did the guy that made this list put a bunch of NY movies in a hat and pull out 40 random titles. There's so much more that were way better.
- trakie, on 11/11/2009, -3/+8i thought american gangster was better than mediocre.
- skppy1225, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5Buried as inaccurate for not having Home Alone 2.
- vizbu, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4Being John Malkovich, I love that move!
- shibagarden, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3West Side Story, The Apartment, Rosemary's Baby, The Producers, Midnight Cowboy, The French Connection, Mean Streets, Network…seems a little light in the 1960s-1970s classics and way too heavy in the 2000s…few of which will be remembered.
- enozten, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3how is king kong (remakes or original) not there? even if it only goes to 1940 they should make an exception and put it on the bottom. that is THE new york city movie.
- quinnquinn12, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3They forgot CHUD
- ban1d0, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I stopped reading after Sex and the city.
- blackhawk465, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Ghostbusters. :)
- mikoss, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Cool list... didn't notice how many movies I'd enjoyed set in NY...
Koyaanisqatsi also had some amazing shots of NYC in the 80s, I'd recommend checking out some of the sequences in that film.

(Although I love Philip Glass, I think it also goes brilliantly to The Strokes) - nikorf11, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2took the words right outta my mouth. give em back.
- MarkDTS, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2They're missing The Out of Towners. One of my all time favorite Jack Lemmon movies.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066193/ - inactive, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2fail
- shibagarden, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2When Harry Met Sally?
- roebeet, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Interesting list, but they probably should have just gone back to the early 1970's and then stopped. The list makes it sound like there were only two good films set in NYC before the 70's, which is untrue.
Some early classics missing: West Side Story, Miracle on 34th Street, The French Connection, The Seven Year Itch, The Pride of the Yankees, Laura, Guys and Dolls, North By Northwest, The Odd Couple, and The Producers. - muffinmonk, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2eh, it's kinda comparable to ghostbusters, as if it was the "ghostbusters" of the nineties.
- flagmaster, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2WTF is King Kong on this damn list...
- Atario, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1This list shows a suspiciously skewed density of movies per year. ("The Wackness"? Really?)
- Gndoab, on 11/12/2009, -2/+3yes....that's what makes New York City New York City. otherwise go to boston or philly. or Chicago. all great cities. they just aren't New York.
- Gndoab, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2yup. it does. sorry you're jealous.
- d4nie1, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Oops. I missed it somehow
- pilot3033, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2nothing like that, this list is just lame and is missing some classic NYC movies
- timothycrash01, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2There's good reason for this though. The 60's & 70's brought out some brilliant directors - most of whom actually grew up in New York. (Scorsese, Lumet, Coppola, Allen, etc.) The films based in New York from these directors are much more personal and authentic.
If this is talking about great New York films, it makes sense that the best are from the directors / writers who actually lived there - which is predominantly from the films earlier on. - mmittimm, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2You wanted to see Hercules in New York on it, didn't you?
- blackhawk465, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2The 1933 version of King Kong is what made it so iconic, not the 2005 version.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. It was the first movie I thought about. I'm just thinking that's why it wasn't on there. - Darthmaul4114, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1how did you think of Pixar from a glance? nothing in the title has anything to do with Pixar, unless you read "big apple" thought of apple, then thought of steve jobs, then thought of Pixar....which is still pretty stupid
- shibagarden, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Once Upon a Time in America?
- LomasLou, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1The Odd Couple
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
Trading Places
Midnight Cowboy
The Fisher King
The Prince of Tides
West Side Story
The French Connection
Do the Right Thing
Ghost
The Pope of Greenwich Village
Zoolander
Reign Over Me
Spider Man
and of course Planet of the Apes - Princeamor, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1IDK why but I Love NY.
- Maxwell1234, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Fine, but argue the pizza and it's WAR!
- Junel, on 11/12/2009, -1/+1No original Superman 1978, fail. I know it wasn't "technically" NYC, but it was still showcased pretty heavily.
- austinscastle, on 11/12/2009, -0/+0thomas crown affair?
- adamzenwine, on 11/12/2009, -0/+0Great, just what the city needs, more reasons to ***** up traffic.
- Testies, on 11/12/2009, -2/+2Yes, but half of that best/biggest/first is just a boloney which makes New York a great city but it's citizens just a bunch of egotistical douche-bags.
- FelixDrylock, on 11/12/2009, -3/+2There are just so many films coming out of NYC nowadays, most of it is bound to be crap, because generally speaking, most movies are crap.
- Testies, on 11/11/2009, -6/+3I was vacationing there this summer and tour boat operator described the military base in the Hudson river of the Manhattan (cant remember the name of the island) as the first in North America.
That was a first sign of BS and there was many to come.
I for one know that Quebec City just celebrated 400th anniversary and it started as a military fortress at the mouth of St. Lawrence river.
And dont get me started on the "best" bagels. Come down to Montreal and lets have taste-off. - d4nie1, on 11/11/2009, -7/+3I'm surprised Manhattan isn't on there.
- inactive, on 11/12/2009, -5/+1Who at first glance thought the story was about Pixar?
- Testies, on 11/11/2009, -8/+3NYC PR Machine back in action I see.
Dont get me wrong, NYC is great but does everything needs to be "best/biggest/first (insert food/structure/whatever) in the world/North America/
