- atavena, on 07/02/2008, -0/+109 movies are after 1990. 6 are after 1980. Close, though.
The real question is why aren't there any 2000 movies. Surely there must've been some greats... surely? - hauntedchippy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9Or that the AFI is just filled with old people who enjoy things they remember
- dunktim, on 07/03/2008, -1/+9AFI is a ***** band.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6This list is from 1998, that's why there aren't any 2000 movies. Also, the 1998 AFI list excludes movies made after 1996. I suppose they want to make sure the movies withstand the "test of time" before they get stuck on the list.
- theduckchaser, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Thank you for saving me countless hours of my life! My memory would have rendered most of them hollow shells of their former selves eventually anyway.
- jcroweall7, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4They updated it last year, for everyone complaining about this and that:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years..._ ...
Everyone's gonna have their own list. At least most of the films on either version of the list is pretty great. I'd like to see them do the same thing for the movies added to the 2007 list (The General: Keaton loves train, likes woman) - Gatesophile, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5I wish it included 1999, so American Beauty would be somewhere on there. Great film. "Guy finally enjoys life, dies."
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4When No Country for Old Men gets on the list they can use "Taking that money.. bad move."
- nynety, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4He obviously means 6 movies from the 80s i.e.1980-1989
- scoottie, on 07/03/2008, -0/+446) A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Future criminals talk like idiots.
exactly my thoughts. - swanny89, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5Wait what? How can there be nine movies from after 1990 but only 6 from after 1980? Logically the 9 from 1990 would be included in the count from 1980.
- erichw1504, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Bourne Ultimatum:
Will kick ass with book - Ezxen, on 07/03/2008, -1/+494) Goodfellas (1990)
94? Are you ***** me? - erichw1504, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Sweeny Todd:
Slits throats and sings alot - Ezxen, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Na there allot of good movies on there, i was not even born/ was very young when some of those great films came out. you obviously have no taste in movies .
Also *This is the original AFI list from 1998. - CenturionMonkey, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3LOTR: The Return of The King
"Pick an ending already. *****." - Thrilltone, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3#9001 - Interview With A Vampire
'Told ya Cruise was *****' - BrownManUPS, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4*sighs at Lucas*
- jls33fsls, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3There aren't any new movies on there because old people made that list, so logically they will pick old movies.
- warsongs7, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Shawshank is #72 in the 2007 list.
- stevealford, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I hate to rain on your pedantic parade, but "cannot" is one word as well. "Can't" is just the abbreviation eliminating two letters. Either way, in modern usage, it's never two words.
- baysidecomedy, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4they should redo this list, tons of good movies have come out since 98...the departed, american gangster, zodiac, no country for old men, hell even borat broke alot of ground (more so then a bunch of those stupid movies)
and why is goodfellas so damn low
thats proof enough that AFI is insane
oh and check out www.fwfr.com
funny stuff - inactive, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4good list~~~!! i want to watch it all~
- elizabethb221, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2a lot is two words.
You could have said, "Sweeny slits throats while singing" - josereyes0, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I definitely understand what you're saying, for example it's tough to judge today's films against films made in the 1930s, the acting and cinematography today is superior by a long shot but you'd expect a business to evolve and improve over the course of time.
But there is something to be said about the innovation that was in the past, today's films are generally a step up on what's been done which is not as exciting as something original and never before seen. I think the best way of doing it is to just pick the best films in a certain period and move on, so the best 3 films 1950-1955, best 3 1955-1960, so on. I do think there are numerous films done today that are more enjoyable than films made in the past, the Lord of The Rings series were excellent, fun filled adventures but they're not worthy of being on the same list as The Godfather. However other films made recently like There Will Be Blood are indeed worthy of being mentioned in that same regard, and there is even room to debate whether it is an even better film. - iamnobody8614, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2@palewook Except that the list wasn't chronological, hence all the jumping around of the dates.
- Superman7507, on 07/03/2008, -0/+26) The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Needs a little Pink Floyd.
+1 - holdit, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2I've always hated the AFI, their mentality seems to be "hey guys lets see how much old ***** we can add in order to look knowledgable and sophisticated".
- craznar, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Well, there is only 36 possible stories .. no fault of Hollywood.
Read about it here: http://www.timsheppard.co.uk/story/articles/36dram ...
Buy the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Thirty-Six-Dramatic-Situatio ... - elizabethb221, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Keaton moves log with log.
Best part of the movie. - jls33fsls, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I never said there weren't good movies in there. I love many of those movies, I was just merely commenting on the fact of less movies being recent.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1That's not true. There were plenty of ***** movies made in the past, they've just been forgotten. In fact I'd say there are probably more movies made post-1970 worthy of a "top 100 movies ever" list than pre-1970, but it's hard to have that sort of perspective on newer movies.
For an example look at the list of Best Picture winners/nominees. There are a hell of a lot of movies that have been totally forgotten. It's also interesting (side note) that usually are either a bunch of ***** movies for the year or several movies worthy of a top list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Bes ... - josereyes0, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2I know recently made movies are weaker than the past, but they shouldn't be dismissed so easily. There Will Be Blood was a fantastic film, it would have won the Oscar were it not for the stupid politics in the Academy Awards. There's numerous films in this list I consider inferior to it, including The Searchers and Fantasia.
- adbaker, on 07/02/2008, -3/+4Only 3 movies since 1980 are in the top 50. Really says a lot about the quality of movies now-a-days huh? And only 1 of them is after 1990.
- aladrin, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1No, there are only 36 possible SITUATIONS. The actual stories for those plots can differ quite a bit, and may include more than 1 situation.
- cvindustries, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Senatorpjt is right on that one. When that list came out in '98, I had only seen about 15 movies on the list. I'm up to over 50 of them now. Good list - although, for a few of them it is best to read about what their significance at the time of their release in order to gain a greater appreciation. New film techniques, storytelling devices, and other elements that we take for granted are often overlooked if you don't realize you're watching the first movie to [fill in the blank].
- ConnerCarlson, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1"34) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Sparknotes or this? Can’t decide."
...personally i used both in highschool - Infidelephant, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Hey Hey Hey!!!! You're BOTH pretty!
- enzobot24, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1AFI has crappy lists... but Goodfellas is still vastly overrated. Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are deservedly ranked higher.
- alapoet, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3Great list!
My personal favorite:
7) The Graduate (1967)
Mrs. Robinson? I’d hit it. - ConnerCarlson, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1old people, old movies. decent logic...
- ZJDriver, on 07/04/2008, -0/+115) Han shoots FIRST george! (get it straight)
- stonedgeek, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Says a lot about afi's bias towards old movies. There have been plenty of great movies in the last 20 years, many of which are in my top ten. 8 of the films in afi's top 10 wouldn't be in my top 100.
- warsongs7, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I agree. Although Goodfellas is a more entertaining romp it was Taxi Driver that had the most effect on me. Raging Bull is even more depressing than Taxi Driver.
- TheKingInYellow, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2here's my five word review of your list:
oh my god that's lame. - breakdancecrew, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Star Trek V:
Don't let William Shatner direct.
Office Space:
It worked in Superman III.
...and I'm out of ideas. - Megaman703, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0They should redo the site, since this makes a cool guessing game.
- RoboBolan, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Heat...?
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1You obviously have an aversion to thinking for yourself. But with your severe lack of gray matter - I totally understand why you might let other morons pick your favorite movies for you. Wake up knucklehead life is too short for your brain dead *****.
