- estacado, on 11/16/2007, -7/+143Arabs, check. Asians, check. Africans, check. Native Americans, check. Jews, che..... wait a minute. That discrimination.
- misterchanesaw, on 11/16/2007, -8/+62these are stereotypical, NOT racist. big difference
- zomgwaffles, on 11/16/2007, -11/+59so hold on, is Disney not supposed to ever make "characters", why would they all be well spoken and politically correct? I mean the old school black-face characters are one things but trying to say the crows from dumbo are racist is idiotic. They are crows that are dumb and "jive", how else would they have made them, what would they do to "correct" this without making these characters boring.
BTW bringing up racism time and time again just perpetuates the existence of racism. There is more a problem with social class segregation than anything in America. - charlieboyx, on 11/16/2007, -6/+50Discrimination is sometimes very hilarious.
- luke123, on 11/16/2007, -5/+48I adored Song of the South as a kid, especially Uncle Remus. While it occurred to me later that it was a racist movie, it never struck me as to how racist it was. But to hear that the man who played Remus couldn't view the movie in the theater where it premiered is absolutely disgusting. It just goes to show you how hard and evil our hearts can be.
- suxmonkey, on 11/16/2007, -11/+52OK, so ... the submission is brilliant too ... but frankly, you had me at the headline. I knew this was going to be good.
- estacado, on 11/16/2007, -2/+41It only counts if Disney owns your school.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+39Scrooge McDuck. The rich old white guy who never gave ***** to anyone, but had no problem cheating them out of their livelihoods and storing them in his massive vault (where he literally swam through the money). But hey, don't blame him for profitting off of the ***** up system in Disneyland, his parents were immigrants from scotland (or ireland). It's not his fault.
Also, Hewey, Dewy, and Louey. 3 bad kids that no one could ever control (and had a tendency to purposefully break ***** in pulblic) whose single mom was very sweet but never disciplined them.
Or maybe Goofy the retarded yokel redneck (hyuk)..complete with gapped buckteeth, and ill-fitting clothes.
And lets not forget that twisted ***** pervert Japetto. Yeah, you made his nose like that because it would be cute. Sure.
Oddly enough, Mickey seemed to be the only one out of all the characters that didn't exhibit any stereotypical characteristics. Maybe he was mixed?
Hey, I should write for cracked or doubleviking. Amirite? - Natural20, on 11/16/2007, -4/+40Dugg for Uncle Remus
- Kajico, on 11/16/2007, -1/+35A little note here on the Jungle Book bit which the author fails to mention. The inspiration for King Louie and the apes came from swing music, and the voice for the King is Louis Prima, an Italian-American, who inspired much of the Ape's mannerisms in the movie. I think the author stretched this one a bit much.
- doctechnical, on 11/16/2007, -1/+35Donald Duck is white. Oddly, he has a sailor coat, but no pants. Draw what conclusions you will.
I would also point out that Daffy duck is black, and wears no clothes at all. The plot thickens! - ravage86, on 11/16/2007, -5/+30It's racist because Uncle Remus was cheerful? He just won the ***** civil war, can you blame him for being happy he's free? I, as a black man, honestly see nothing offensive with Song of the South.
- RichieDagger, on 11/16/2007, -0/+22That's despicable.
- Urusai, on 11/16/2007, -2/+23It's only racist if it's unpopular.
- dunnylovehun, on 11/16/2007, -4/+24Did you know that a stereotype held by most black people is that white people don't dress warm enough for the weather? My white friends always seem to get a kick out of that.
In that sense I guess Peter Pan and Wendy flying around London in tiny tights and a bathrobe respectively could be considered racist. - drmangrum, on 11/16/2007, -8/+28Wow, the author of this needs to learn what racism is. Stereotyping != racism. The truly insulting thing is, if Disney hadn't put in characters like that, they would be attacked for not being multi-cultural. Damned if you do....
- DiscoJohn, on 11/16/2007, -2/+22You guys are surprised by this? It's not like it's part of some underground racist agenda. It's reflective of American culture. But hey, if you REALLY wanna be offended, watch any of the Fast and Furious movies.
- tman84, on 11/16/2007, -2/+21what's completely hilarious about that is they cite a study showing African atheletes are superior to Europeans because of a genetically different way of storing oxygen. however a nobel prize winning geneticist completes a study on intelligence and he comes up with the opposite conclusion and is considered a racist. i love this country
- doctechnical, on 11/16/2007, -0/+19His an ass what?
- estacado, on 11/16/2007, -0/+17Daffy has a priest's collar.
- BuzFortuna, on 11/16/2007, -2/+19This should actually be titled "Top #2 things that are offensive in Disney movies, and 7 other things that could be considered mildly offensive if you're easily persuaded into listening to the stupid correlations we draw."
- kyouteki, on 11/16/2007, -5/+20Here you go, Mickey Mouse saying "We will annihilate the Jews."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv3dvYhFk_Y - Spog, on 11/16/2007, -0/+14Was it the Mickey Mouse Monopoly? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDZGD0HgoUc I don't know why you're dugg down lol but yea.. interesting documentary
- Jeffmr1, on 11/16/2007, -6/+20Theres a whole documentary we watched in my Sociology class about Disney and their portrayal of minorities and women. Pretty interesting stuff, anybody know the name of the docu?
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 11/16/2007, -10/+23What I'm getting from this is all of Disney's characters should be drawn as medium-tan plain boxes and they should all use the identical computer generated voices. And the only lines can be "My name is _______"
How about Scrooge Duck? He was rich, grumpy as hell, and drawn as a "white" duck. Lesson learned: All white characters have tons of money that they don't want to share and don't like anyone they can't get money from..... oh wait, I'm going to be buried because that's what 80% of diggers enjoy believing.
How about the banking guys in Washington Mutual commercials, they have one commercial where there are 15 bankers who apparently love charging fees for checking accounts standing together getting horrified by what the non-white washington mutual spokesperson is saying about free checking. It's only racisim if it is generated from the white side. - saltywings, on 11/16/2007, -9/+22Where are the stereotypes of the white-man, huh?
- Nerfdude, on 11/16/2007, -0/+13"Come on, blackbirds acting in a manner stereotypically assigned to African-Americans isn't that offensive. At least they didn't just get some white guy to do his best "black voice." Oh, really? They did? And, they called the lead character "Jim Crow?" Um, hey, look over there! It's a convincing, logical end to this argument!"
honestly, you can just put every cracked.com article on the front page. they're all solid gold. - dracostimpy, on 11/16/2007, -0/+12Your wasting you're time, doc.
- btdub, on 11/16/2007, -4/+16Oh I hate to do this, it really makes me sick, but you're right.
My best friend of ten years is black, and we have this convo all the time. White people don't seem to care as much being called a honkey, or being made fun of. It's our self-consious, underwriten obligatory payback, or at least thats what he and I joke about all the time :) - Kenzan, on 11/16/2007, -1/+13You forget the Parrot in Aladin; voiced by Jewish comedian Gilbert Godfrey. Many Jewish people had a fit that an obviously "Jewish" Parrot would be the pet/servant of an Arab.
- TonyKay, on 11/16/2007, -11/+23Racist people in my old school used to call me Mowgli because of my brown skin and black hair. What does that count for?
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -3/+14Your black friends are ***** retards and probably coons with broken english. Drop em and find real black Americans.
- volz0r, on 11/16/2007, -2/+13Wouldnt Walt Disney himself be the most racist character? Anyone remember the comic book he supported called 'Mickey and Minnie versus the Fierce *****'? http://www.momentsintime.com/Disney%20Book%20Page. ...
- MikeFallopian, on 11/16/2007, -0/+11"There are NO characters in Disney films that sound African American and are also human."
What about Uncle Remus, the baddest ***** on the plantation? - ORiONXxX, on 11/16/2007, -4/+14your ethnicity is completely irrelevant to your ability to interpret something as offensive.
- Humptydank, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10That's because you're missing a quarter. If you had all four quarters it would become clear.
- Icyfenix, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10Or, he's just a ***** duck. Yea, maybe the artists had something in mind when they made these characters, but to me, he's jut a goddamn duck.
- theaceoffire, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10O.o I know, I loved "Zip-a-dee-do-daa"...
I hate it when people mess with my childhood. - benedictkenny, on 11/16/2007, -4/+13These aren't racist.
They are just playing off of STEREOTYPES. In your line of thinking, any joke or reference to a stereotype makes one a racist, and, well, the world of comedians is just full of racists. I suppose any researcher who merely points to a group of people acting a certain way, that might be stereotypical, is also a racist? It's not like these movies hinted in any way that all people of this ethnicity are this way. It just personified stereotypes of the time through animals.
Am I black? Well, I prefer African-American. Am I offended by these clips? Definitely not. If I'm not, why would you be? - colto, on 11/16/2007, -0/+9Not to mention the one with the huge nose.
- ravage86, on 11/16/2007, -1/+10You had me up until "real black americans". Be friends with someone because you want to. Its not bad to replace your black friends with white friends if they're better people (and vise versa)
- Otto, on 11/16/2007, -2/+10If you think they're not portraying real people, then you probably need to follow your own advice.
Some stereotypes are indeed racist. However, some are simply reflections of reality. You need to learn to distinguish between the two. - danielgary, on 11/16/2007, -1/+8Sure. Bill Gates is the greatest philanthropist in the world, possibly of all time. Scrooge McDuck is a selfish, greedy bastard that wouldn't give a dime to help anyone.
Satisfied? - DjOverEZ, on 11/16/2007, -1/+9"Are we reading too much into it? Do you see anything wrong with how they've drawn "the duke of soul" at 1:57?"
Not that I don't disagree with the subtle racism of many Disney films but I'm pretty sure they made the Duke of Soul to look like Duke Ellington.
http://www.musicnotes.com/images/features/artists/ ... - UbIwerks, on 11/16/2007, -0/+8One of the best early cartoons that's been banned for being racist is 'Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs' by Warner Bros.
It's a brilliant breakout cartoon by director Bob Clampett, and featured some of the best jazz musicians from the 40's. It's a shame nobody can watch it.... until now!!!!
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1692829 - Urusai, on 11/16/2007, -3/+10Heck, the Indians in Blazing Saddles were Jewish, apparently.
- quetzatcoatl, on 11/16/2007, -7/+14If you think they are portraying real people you need to meet more people that aren't white.
- Humptydank, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7Well I can't speak to Cracked's logic (and that may be the first time anyone's written that sentence), and I don't know how old a black man you are, but the thing to keep in mind is that this came out in a time when the "yessa, massa bowss" kind of character was the only portrayal of black folks in mainstream cinema. This was before Sidney Poitier, and this came out in the same year that Paul Robesen founded (and had to found) the American Crusade Against Lynching.
I'm not saying every cartoon had to be a serious exploration on race relations in this country. Just that when black kids went to the movies this, and a constant parade of shoe-shine "boys," butlers, and delivery boys, all talking with the same "yassa, thanks you kindly, sah" was all they saw. When they'd go home, they'd see a wide range of people, from educated men to uneducated men, from hard honest workers to criminals, and some of them spoke like that and some didn't. But when they went to movies made by white men, that's all they heard. So you can defend the fact that this was supposed to be the deep South, and it might have been appropriate for the time, but it's an interesting example of the film bending to the stereotype, rather than fitting the stereotype into the film.
So it's not the worst example, it's a product of the white men of its age, and its it's understandable, but like a few things in anyone's personal past, just because we've come to grips with it doesn't mean it shouldn't still stay in a drawer. - Elranzer, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Mickey isn't a stereotype? One could say he's a stereotype for an anti-depressants abuser.
