- Xalechim, on 02/20/2009, -5/+50"This was 2001. A Beautiful Mind won Best Picture. That movie was a ripe hunk of *****"
Please tell me no one else agrees with this statement - Shogi, on 02/21/2009, -1/+24Yeah, that movie was quite good.
- ultrahombre, on 02/21/2009, -2/+22The Matrix definetly deserved something. That movie never gets old....Ever.
- IronGoldfish, on 02/21/2009, -0/+12I understand completely why Serenity wasn't nominated for anything, so I'm not bitter about it. I mean, it's pretty much a series finale. It's still my favorite movie, though.
- Sornos, on 02/21/2009, -6/+18The Green Mile (otherwise known as "the *****, three hours long version of The Shawshank Redemption")
I'm debating whether to bury on this point alone... - Dougman82, on 02/21/2009, -0/+10I had you until "even the last Spider Man was more entertaining." It wasn't a super awesome movie, and I definitely wouldn't give it the Best Picture award, but Dark Knight was still a very good show.
- GirlsCallMeMatt, on 02/21/2009, -0/+10I think the performances in the Dark Knight is what made it shine. Heath Ledger's Joker was honestly horrifying. On top of that were the performances of Aaron Eckhart and Gary Oldman as Harvey Dent and James Gordon respectively. The tension and mood those performances created is academy nomination worthy. Just my opinion though.
I did enjoy Iron Man about as much as the Dark Knight, but to compare them is like comparing apples and oranges. - MarkusDee, on 02/21/2009, -0/+10Ummm, The Dark Knight is based on a comic book. Who likes comic books? Oh yeah, that's right, nerds.
- johnandlandry, on 02/21/2009, -0/+9Seriously, the only similarities between those two movies are that they both take place in prisons, and one of the characters is wrongly accused in each. You don't have to like The Green Mile, but damn, it's nothing like Shawshank.
- Shogi, on 02/21/2009, -5/+14I don't care how much caviar and hundred dollar bills laced with cocaine you snort, failure to acknowledge a film of this magnitude is an insult to the entire film industry. Gargantuan in scope, revolutionary in making, and unprecedented in success, this is THE movie of the year, no matter what the snobby Hollywood pricks say.
- mahouyousei, on 02/21/2009, -0/+9Two Towers was always my favorite. Return of the King had far to many endings.
- Shogi, on 02/21/2009, -1/+10Talking about The Dark Knight of course.
- c010rb1indusa, on 02/21/2009, -0/+7What about Primer, I know it doesn't carry as much swagger and box office $ like the others on the list but Primer was an amazing movie about time travel if it were actually real. The result is a confusing, but amazing story that will make you think hard and long about the purpose of "it" all.
- kinseyincanada, on 02/21/2009, -1/+8who really gives a *****? would an oscar nomination or win make the Dark Knight a better movie? hell no. It was a great movie and was absolutely praised by critics and fans, it made a metric *****-ton of money at the box office. An oscar nomination is simply an ego boost to the filmmakers and something to put on the DVD box. Who cares it does nothing to the film. Just enjoy it.
- sourabhg, on 02/21/2009, -0/+7Totally Lame Article.
- aristoxenus, on 02/21/2009, -9/+15Can someone explain once and for all the merits of Dark Knight?? The dialog and moral "deepness" were on about the same level as the Miami Vice movie -- it was a summer superhero flick with some pseudo-psychological-thriller lines thrown in, and without the summer fun. Iron Man had much more clever sci-fi material and also had the humility to keep a sense of humor about it. Heck even the last Spider Man was more entertaining.
Is it because Ledger died?? - Schup08, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6The Fellowship of the Ring the best one? I'm sorry, but I thought it was pretty much unanimous that they got better as they went?? No??
- oger, on 02/21/2009, -1/+7no Revenge of the Nerds or Tron.
- blaydcor, on 02/21/2009, -1/+7 You know, it was a pretty damn good movie, but it really wasn't that gargantuan, revolutionary or unprecedented.
- 6shot, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5What movie are you talking about again?
- cuoops, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6how about Grandma's Boy?
- DocOrpheus, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6More bitching and moaning that Dark Knight didn't get an Oscar?
Get over it already, fanboys. Are your egos so small that you need those "elitist snobs" to affirm/approve of your taste? - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -2/+6I just dont get where such zeal for DK come from... I liked the movie but except for joker perfomance its was just another batman movie...
- Gurmo, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4I found The Fellowship of the Ring to be the best with the Two Towers really close, I though Return of the King was the weakest by a long shot the last hour of the movie was grueling.
- KirbyMorph, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4They knew LotR was a trilogy and didnt bother doing anything special for the first ones and settled on giving the third one all the awards as a sort of "these are actually for all the lotr films, not this one" type of deal. Similar to how they give random actors Best Actor / Actress awards for ***** movies to make up for snubbing them for 20 years.
- Pobotrol, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4Tron not being nominated for Visual Effects because using computers was "cheating", is an outrage which will never be forgiven.
- kinseyincanada, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5the Dark Knight was a great movie but i personally thought Milk was far better.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4fellowship is the best one becouse its unlike the rest of trilogy.
no big battles, but darker, and more helpless and desperate are main characters.
but arguing which one of this trillogi is best is not a good thing. - MadHarvey, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4When a character like Batman is done well, it can rise up to the highest level of art.
Batman is a human being haunted by the death of his parents, consumed by his own fears and doubts. He is a man of questionable morality and an agent of questionable justice. He uses his own fears to become something great. Everyone can deeply relate to this story.
The Dark Knight (and Begins) take the story seriously and really understand the power of the characters. The Joker and Batman become perfect archetypes that have graced human stories since the first known story was written.
Joker, the symbol of chaos, and Batman the symbol of humanity with all its shortcomings and fears, fighting against the cold empty universe.
Dark Knight takes it a step further by introducing modern morality/justice issues like asking how much freedom are we willing to give up to fight the "terrorists"?
I don't think Dark Knight deserved a best picture nomination, but there is no denying that it is a powerful, relevant, extremely well done film.
The Spiderman story simply doesn't contain that type of power. Even the very best Spiderman movie, couldn't hope to evoke the power of a great Batman story. Ironman was a great movie, but it's the story of humanity using its guilt to fight the chaos, where Batman is humanity using its fear. I think fear is a more universal and powerful element.
tl;dr - MomoTheCow, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5Happy to see some love for Fellowship of the Rings over Two Towers for a change. Odd how many people prefer the latter.
- MomoTheCow, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4I think the Dark Knight's plot reads really well on paper, and Ledger is a miracle on the screen. The music is awesome and by and large, the picture wades further into complex moral questions than any picture of its kind and budget has done for quite a while.
Still doesn't make the whole thing work like everyone seems to think it does. I won't take away what people got from it, and I'm glad to see it did well... but the praise it's been getting makes me think we've all come to expect too little, or that I've gone insane. - Dougman82, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3?
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3That movie was 10,000 shades of awesome. If anyone reading this hasn't seen it, hit up Netflix for it ASAP. They have it available to watch instantly. Watch it when you can really pay attention, though. It's that kind of movie.
- jeuhrn, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4I think it's because he delivered such a ***** outstanding performance people almost lost their teeth.
At least those of us who've only seen him in Ten Things I Hate About You, and A Knights Tale. - swankboy, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3And a dupe no less.
- pyroguy56011, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2It's great, but nowhere near Oscar-worthy in any category.
- Jeebugorn, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2i agree that they got better as they went on. but that's just my opinion. see, i hadnt read LOTR before Fellowship came out. i didnt get what the hype was about. watched it and liked it. got ireally nterested between it and Two Towers. loved Two Towers. was addicted by the time RotK hit. saw all the movies on Trilogy Tuesday when RotK was released so that was an epic experience for me.
- MSUKate, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2I'm sorry I can't dig on "a beautiful mind" it was okay, but it romanticizes mental illness.
Also kind of sappy. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -9/+11The Dark Knight is not a ***** nerd movie. Raiders of the Lost Ark is not a ***** nerd movie. Blade Runner is not a nerd movie. Empire Strikes Back was not a nerd movie. (Even if it has become one decades later.)
- vysakh, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2The matrix should have got a nomination at least. I agree.
- ELCad, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2Children of Men was not even up for Best Picture was the biggest error they ever made. And I still say Babe should have gotten Best Picture instead of Shindler's List, but I'm probably on my own with that opinion.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Yeah...because the only people who saw and enjoyed TDK were people who read comic books!
From the very beginning it was made to be a giant blockbuster, appealing to as many people as possible. It was not a "comic book movie" at all. - 333tubbie, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3A Beautiful Mind was ok but was not that great. I can not remember what else came against it. I think it was based on a true story.
- Rudegar, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2like the book though
- SpeedyG, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2Blockbuster, exceedingly popular movies are for People's Choice awards.
Actual cinematic masterpieces, no matter how obscure, are for the Oscars. - HalsMyPal, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1no 2001: A Space Odyssey?
yeah it won technical awards but it deserved so much more!
oh and Annie Hall is quite amazing. - Absyrd2, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1huh? it almost killed his relationship and child....
- danc4498, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Am I the only one who felt Fellowship of the Rings was the most boring of the trilogy? Every once in a while I want to watch the trilogy over again, but can't get through Fellowship without getting sleepy...
- MSUKate, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1I'm surprised that Serenity didn't get nominated for effects. They had a way better space battle sequence than EP3
The final fall of Serenity still makes me a little nauseous to watch. - LordAddius, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2Three Words:
