- codespyder, on 08/27/2008, -17/+348I once asked a girl if I could generate a Big Bang in *her* Erlenmeyer flask.
I never got a call back.
:( - dweeb79, on 08/27/2008, -9/+306Everyone should want to turn on the LHC because of this......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3iryBLZCOQ - IanLacy, on 08/27/2008, -2/+286I heart particle physics.
"To grossly simplify it, on a scale smaller than atoms, the quantum level, everything suddenly turns into a goddamn circus. ... We're talking particles popping in and out of existence, being in two places at the same time, and generally acting like *****."
Classic. - inactive, on 08/27/2008, -5/+231This is the third article this week about scientists blowing up the world.
Am I gonna die? - Chairboy, on 08/27/2008, -3/+216Perhaps your glass stopper wasn't of the proper dimensions to maintain an airtight environment.
- CasinoJack, on 08/27/2008, -0/+103Good article, but I do worry how many people will take it seriously and go on a rant about how evil the LHC is. I can't remember where I read it, but I think the chances of the LHC destroying the world are roughly equal to the chances of you getting struck by lightning every day for your entire life. It could happen, but it's somewhat unlikely.
- hasslinthehoff, on 08/27/2008, -0/+101Eh, we had a good run.
- KayinAngel, on 08/27/2008, -0/+92I get my science lessons from Cracked.com
- Deadpixel1221, on 08/27/2008, -0/+82Great, I just got LHCrolled. :/
- bobalien, on 08/27/2008, -3/+80you mean with your Large Hard-on Collider?
- pitchaikovsky, on 08/27/2008, -13/+88Great article. One of the more funny ones in recent memory.
- shutaro, on 08/27/2008, -5/+77We're all gonna die... Eventually.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -7/+69You bet! LOL
- brstilson, on 08/27/2008, -7/+68If this mentions the Hadrion collider I am going to ***** a brick. The only people who think it can destroy the world are people who know nothing about quantum physics.
- souljaboytellem, on 08/27/2008, -4/+63Reminds me of my favorite quote "I don't know what weapons will be used in World War III, but i know what weapons will be used in World War IV...sticks and stones" - Albert Einstein
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/27/2008, -1/+59All the LHC is going to do in reality is swamp researchers & scientists around the world with more data than they'll ever be able to actually do anything with. I work at a tier 3 university and the amount of data we're expecting to receive from the LHC is huge. The amounts that tier 1 & 2 sites are going to get are staggering.
- brstilson, on 08/27/2008, -0/+47Yes, but everybody knows that scientists are stupid, and foolish, and high-school dropouts who live in abandoned vehicles are the only ones smart enough to stop those idiot scientists from inadvertently destroying the world. Haven't you SEEN movies?
- LemonChicken, on 08/27/2008, -3/+50Oh, dude, deep...
|: - inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+48I, for one, think this whole "fire" business is ill-conceived and dangerous. Its proponents could easily wipe out the whole cave with their meddling.
- alperea, on 08/27/2008, -0/+47get busy, we need flying cars and hoverboards by 2015.
- chronobyte, on 08/27/2008, -5/+50Yeah, because scientists have never been wrong before..
- mrdeathgod, on 08/27/2008, -6/+50"Imagine you're like the fabled King Midas, and you have the power to convert matter with a single touch. Except that instead of gold, everything you touch turns into *****. And everything it touches turns to *****. Before you know it, the whole world is *****, and it's all your fault."
I'm looking at you, Bush! - Chrisss88, on 08/27/2008, -5/+48To me it's a load of bull that the LHC will "destroy the Earth".
Some of the greatest minds from across the planet are building a machine in which they believe the reaction will be on a sub-atomic level.
Now if scientists from across the world believe that it is safe and do not seem to be panicking, I feel pretty safe... - IphtashuFitz, on 08/27/2008, -0/+42The LHC will collect 300Gb/sec of raw data which is filtered for "interesting events". It's expected to generate 27TB of data every day that CERN (tier 0) will collect and redistribute via dedicated 10Gb links to 11 tier 1 sites around the world. The data is actually broken up so not all the Tier 1 sites get the full 27TB. 150+ tier 2 sites get data from those tier 1 sites. They pull data for the projects in which they focus on, and provide that data to researchers at other universities & labs that are doing similar research. The LHC is expected to produce 10-15 petabytes of data each year
- welestgw, on 08/27/2008, -0/+41Well we will with that attitude.
- Chairboy, on 08/27/2008, -0/+40Other great similar quotes include "God does stuff for people who do stuff for themselves" by Benjamin Franklin, "honestly, lady, I don't give a *****" from Gone with the Wind, and Neil Armstrong's famous "That's a little hop for me, but one huge ass jump for folks in general."
- RAGEdemon, on 08/27/2008, -1/+41If by somewhat you mean extremely infinitesimally small chance.
The chances of being annihilated by an asteroid or comet are about a billion times greater.
Although I appreciate the humor, I don't think the world is quite ready for this kind of thing. It is anti-science enough as it is. - Spuy767, on 08/27/2008, -0/+37I now understand quantum physics: "On a scale smaller than atoms, the quantum level, everything suddenly turns into a goddamn circus."
- LemonChicken, on 08/27/2008, -0/+32"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
- MxM111, on 08/27/2008, -1/+33And the Universe was saved...
- andypop481, on 08/27/2008, -1/+30i think anyone reading a cracked article probably knows that already anyway
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -6/+35Don't worry - violent religious people like Christians and Islamists will end the world on purpose before science does by accident.
- ligyron, on 08/27/2008, -0/+27I think he uses the phrase "most likely" very loosely
- Logicexe, on 08/27/2008, -0/+24What high school did you go to where you learned the physics relevant to the LHC?
- shutaro, on 08/27/2008, -6/+30You left out the rest of that quote... Something like: "...words will never hurt me".
- Chairboy, on 08/27/2008, -3/+27> The only people who think it can destroy the world are
> people who know nothing about quantum physics
And people who assert they know a lot about Quantum Physics are usually the ones who really, really don't. It's one of those subjects that becomes more mysterious the more you learn. - JSager, on 08/27/2008, -0/+23Definitely channeling ol' Douglas Adams there.
- cotaskmemalloc, on 08/27/2008, -1/+23@ everyone,
I wish people would understand that scientists have a VERY GOOD IDEA of what will happen when they "turn it on". If people actually bothered to get an understanding of the theories they are trying to test, you'd realize how stupid all of this sensationalist ***** is. - stillasleep00, on 08/27/2008, -0/+21That reminds me of going to elementary school in the 90's. Every boring subject could magically be solved if put to rap!
- tinkafoo, on 08/27/2008, -1/+22The world is going to end in 2012 already, why are we worried about science?
Oh wait, maybe they'll be cranking the LCH into overdrive in 2012.. uh oh.. - freezerburn666, on 08/27/2008, -1/+22but the nano bots would be faster, more efficient and stronger....
- Matt2k, on 08/27/2008, -0/+20How much data is huge versus staggering? Your relativistic terms are confusing me already.
- monkeysaurus, on 08/27/2008, -0/+20You know, if the end of the world's coming, I'd rather it was due to our rampant curiosity than our rampant stupidity.
- karmapolice63, on 08/27/2008, -9/+28Notice the recurring theme of the LHC and it's tendency to want to erase us from the planet.
- EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -0/+19I will take the down payment of your sexy girlfriend just to make sure you dont try and weasel your way out of our deal.
- balibones, on 08/27/2008, -0/+19I hope I wasn't the only one that ended up bobbing his head to that...
- redlantern64, on 08/27/2008, -0/+19FUD, but ***** funny FUD.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+20The east side protons collide with the west side protons mother *****, then watcha gonna do bitch! I see a P.Didi reality show here.
- Thoric, on 08/27/2008, -0/+18Holy *****, I wasn't expecting a rap to be so informative
- rojano17, on 08/27/2008, -3/+21Alright guys, spill it, how many of you work for Cracked?
