- scarper86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Hype doesn't have anything to do with a film's indepedence. "Independent" means it was made by an independent studio. "The Terminator" was a low budget (about $6 million) film that was produced by Hemdale Film Corporation, Cinema 84, Euro Film Fund, Pacific Western none of which are major studios. It grossed almost $40 million in 1984 which was huge box office for a tiny film.
- willistg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Where the ***** is PI?
IMDB: http://imdb.com/title/tt0138704/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9UEl8ZnQ9MXxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8Y289MXxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc=1;ft=123;fm=1
Seriously!!!!
And Sideways somehow making any best of list is pretty much *****. - starbirix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Clerks was #4.
Where was Boondock Saints??!?! - Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Where is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind?
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yay for Donnie Darko.
But really... Terminator was "independent?" I remember that movie getting tons of hype. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16The Blair Witch Project should not be on a list of "greatest" anythings.
Credibility went right out the window when I saw that on there. - hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Seriously, Maria Full of Grace!? Awesome movie.
(Though she was Columbian, not Mexican :P) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yea for Run Lola Run!
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8newevilmind: Passion of The Christ was completely funded and by Mel Gibson's production company and some of Gibson's private fortune. No studio wanted to touch that film with a 600 foot pole.
- liquidhot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Creative Commons licensing is a fad that was made up for bloggers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Clerks was #4.
Where was Boondock Saints??!?!"
I think you're misunderstanding what an independent film is, it means not backed finacially during production by a major studio
Clerks had a production budget of $27,000, Boondock saints had a production budget of $6,000,000 - lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree. I would think Pi should be on the list.
Where's the "The Hudsucker Proxy"? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110074/) At one time it had the record for "most expensive independent film" ever made. That doesn't mean it's good, but I think it was a hilarious movie. - cmcarson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8yea for CUBE
- kmedlin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8An independent film is called that because it was made independently of a studio. It was later sold at a film festival to a studio.
So "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and other movies that have an "indie" feel to them are NOT independent films.
Budget has nothing to do with independent film as we saw with "Passion of the Christ." It has everything to do with studio backing, so before saying, "Hey! Where's {Fill In Movie Name Here}?" Make sure it was actually an independent film and not just a studio making a movie with an indie feel to it... - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Run Lola Run is a great movie. Swingers had a lot of good moments. Buffalo 66 is classic Ricci. Passion of the Christ I dont see much as an indie film, nor Being John Malkovich (still an awesome movie though). City of God is one of the best "gangster" films ever. Memento was a nice flick to see twice. I agree with the top 5 needing to be on the list, but not necessarily in that order. Clerks should be number 1 ;)
And if you haven't seen it, the trailer for the sequel after 10 years just came out yesterday:

- intent, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17What about a very popular film (at the time) called Napoleon Dynamite?
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If not Snatch, they could have listed "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells" (a MUST see for fans of Snatch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120735/ )
- newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13most of these were purchased by huge studios.
who thinks of terminator or Passion of christ as "independent"?? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't see how Passion of the Christ can be viewed as anything but Indie. It was made out of Gibson's pocket and put out by a rather small company. The movie got attention alone from grass roots effort, much in the same way as Fareinheit 9/11 did.
- heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why isn't Star Wars on there? The Star Wars films have always been independent films. Lucas pays for the movies himself and does everything in-house except for distribution which he lets Fox do.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The article says that The Terminator has 'all the hallmarks of an indie movie'.
It doesn't say it is one, however... - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Chances are most people have seen all of the top 5. I know I have...
- habitat2050, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5All it takes to get on the front page is something that everyone has an opinion on and is willing to bitch about it.
- wordburn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Slacker is a GREAT film. I've seen it half-a-dozen times and it never gets dull!! A movie with NO main character and 20+ stories.....friggin genius!!
- diggbrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can't believe Bad Taste is in there. I thought I was the only person in the world to have seen that.
- JayWright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agreed... Richard Linklater never disappoints. He's also responsible for shaping much of the indie film movement of the last 25 years.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hype really has nothing to do with this list. It all boils down to who funded the movie. If the film isn't backed by a hollywood studio or production company(in other words, it hasn't gone through the 'studio system'), and is usually funded by private backers from various parts of the country of the world... it generally is classified in hollywood as an independent film.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you're into indy films, let me suggest a new one called "Brick". It was filmed at my current High School as well as my town. Its Film-Noir and Rolling Stone raved about it as one of the best films at sundance:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/focus_features/brick/hd/
It is going to wide release this April (I've already seen it because the director gave the towns people a free showing as a kind of "thanks" for our support)
The funny thing to me is how I can locate EVERY scene in the movie (one is even a block from my house) and its also funny to see people dying / stabbed / drugs at my High School haha - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Memento definitely deserves to be on the list. Can't say the same about Roger and me.
- NV0U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wait a second... where the hell was Pi?
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*points to the "Woot! Clerks is listed" in his post*
Dee Dee Dee! - dugbay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bottle Rocket. True independent. It was a negative pickup.
- quigles3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some of these are awesome choices. I'm a huge movie buff (and even review DVDs for Joblo.com), so it's cool to see some of my favorite flicks getting some recognition (despite their already being a cult following on almost all of them).
Still, I can't help but wonder what some of them are doing on the list. Not because I don't like them, but because (in terms of budget alone) they are hardly "independent" movies. However, technically speaking, they weren't financed or distributed by a major studio, thus making the label of "independent" accurate. Still, having them on the list feels questionable.
Here are some of the films I'm specifically talking about:
+ The Passion of the Christ (budget = $30 million!!!!) -- NOTE: I hated this film with every inch of my body.
+ Sideways (budget = $16 million) -- NOTE: I love this movie, and everything else Alexander Payne has made.
+ Gross Pointe Blank (budget = $15 million!!!)
+ Being John Malkovich (budget = $13 million!!)
+ The Terminator (budget = $6.5 million!)
+ The Usual Suspects (budget = $6 million) -- NOTE: As everyone knows already, this movie kicks ass.
+ Memento (budget = $5 million) -- NOTE: This is one of my all-time favorite films.
+ Donnie Darko (budget = $4.5 million) -- NOTE: This is another one of my all-time favorite films.
+ Lost in Translation (budget = $4 million) -- NOTE: This film is completely overrated, and was a complete waste of my time.
+ Run Lola Run (budget = $3.5 million)
In addition, here are the movie I'm really happy to see make the list:
+ El Mariachi (the director of SIN CITY gives his amazing $7,000 debut)
+ Cube (a completely awesome mind-f*ck of a film)
+ City of God (completely breathtaking film - outstanding)
+ Bad Taste (Peter Jackson's first film - gory and hilariously weird)
And then of course we have the movies that totally freaking rock, and were going to make the list no matter what:
+ Clerks
+ Reservoir Dogs
+ Mad Max
+ Memento
+ Donnie Darko
+ Swingers
+ Evil Dead - soundboy64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I watch it subtitled, never watched it dubbed.... dubbed live action has horrible written all over it... cept maybe samurai movies... heh
- lefragileebouy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4twas also a complete rip off of the last broadcast which was infinitely better
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122143/ - mcsweeney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If lists do anything right, it's that they make people argue.

like Blood Feast - #47 - go here.

have fun - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3heh me too :D
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you liked the ideas expressed in THX 1138, throw the movie Equilibrium in your Netflix que, came out in 2002 had Christian Bale in it. I tend not to like action flicks, but this one had a good enough story to it.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Primer http://www.primermovie.com/ didnt make the list but is also good
(P.S. Im glad none of those ***** focus feature movies got on there) - eldiablito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think "Happiness" embodied the idea of "independent" more so than many films on this list. Your ill feelings and violation only affirm it's power. rarely do they dig deep under the skin and fester. this one surely does. for this i applaud. todd solondz is one to watch.
- detour27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just recently watched Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai starring Forrest Whitaker. Best independent film I've seen in a while. (and filmed in my hometown Jersey City, NJ)
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Independent films usually have more substance and more impact then big box office movies. Most main stream produced movies are more about creating celebrity hype or showing off new CGI effects, where as movies from independent film makers tend to put a good story across.
On a side note, I hope I'm not the only person who feels that illegally downloading movies has nothing to do with declining box office sales. If film companies even cared to put half a thought into their films, they might sell better. Who wants to see another lame horror movie with predictable story lines/predictable "twists" or another cheap Adam Sandler-like movie. People are just growing tired of the same actors playing the same roles in different movies. For example, take a look at the movie "Bench Warmers". We all know that movie is going to be terrible, it will only be good for sitting around for a few one liners while you are sitting around piss drunk with your buddies. It certainly doesn't stand a chance at being a huge success, and when it DOES fail at the box office, Internet Pirates will be to blame, not a bad story line and banal characters. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why the hell isn't Equilibrium on that list?!?
- transeunte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice to see City of God on the list. Not only it is a great movie, but it also boosted Brazilian cinema and spawned the production of several other good flicks.
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sex Lies and Videotape is #7? What a pile of crap that movie was.
And why have Mean streets but not Raging Bull in the top 10?
And where the heck is Whale Rider? - greatdevourer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw Lola Rennt a few weeks ago - very good movie. How good is the English translation?
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/
Just threw it in my Netflix que right now. Looks interesting at the least. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't see how Passion of the Christ can be viewed as anything but Indie. As for Blaire Witch, i think the movie was over hyped. I didn't particularly like it... but you got to admit, for how much money was used to make that movie.. compared to the turn out..that's a hell of an accomplishment. -
